I made the same decision. I owned both lenses and decided to sell 85mm F1.8 because I hardly used it. 90mm F2.8 can do the same as the 85mm plus a lot more, especially macro. Besides, the lens produces crazy sharp photos. It's my favorite lens.
This video was very informative but not covered about the focus speed when it comes to portrait photography. 90mm is very slow and hard to detect the motion speed when it is moving but in 85mm it is fast as lightning to capture. That is one thing to note if you look to replace it with your 85mm
I have just discovered your videos. You're really good. Have a realistic approach about everyday lens options and drawbacks!!! Thanks! you have a new subscriber!!
Very well done video and practical evaluation, Bernard. Thank you! As an amateur photographer who enjoys many aspects of the hobby, from landscape, to city walks, interesting faces, low-light and architecture I own both the 90mm (for macro) and the 85 f/1.8…because the salesman sold it to a newbie. Can you think of any reason for owning both these lenses? I could return the 85, pay about $100 restocking fee and just move on, or keep both and chalk it up to experience. What do you think? Thanks for all your videos; I am glad I discovered them. Bravo! Best, Will
Thank you for your kind words. :) For me, if I were to ever get an 85mm, I would go for the 85 F1.4. Make the difference more distinct. Or you can do what I did, I got the 35 f1,8 and the 50 f1.4 instead. Also great lens for taking portraits, but different styles. Why get a 90 and an 85 for the "same look"
thanks for this video, i have the 90mm, i got it for what is meant for years ago and now i wanna do portraits and wasn't sure how different would the bokeh be from 85mm f1.8. Have you ever thought the 90mm is too slow or is it good enough for you for people ? thanks
I think it is good enough for people and I don't think it is too slow. Obviously, the 85 f1.4 would be better but if are just starting and don't want to "throw" too much money in, I think the 90mm is a good starter lens, since you already have it. My biggest complaint about this lens is the focus breathing. But it doesn't affect photos
Haha. It’s okay! The 85mm is also a good lens that I’m sure you will enjoy using! You can also consider the sigma 70mm macro or the Sony 50mm macro as they are inexpensive options that you could pair with the 85!
Thanks for the short but informative review! I'm still thinking whether to get the Sigma 50mm F1.4 as my portrait lens but the 90mm macro is really solid too! Have you tried food photography with the 90mm macro yet?
50 isn’t exactly a portrait lens because I myself have the 55 f1.8. For portraits I rather use the 90 than the 50 even though I love the 50mm focal length more for my video work. I have used the 90mm for food shots before but unless it’s for macro shots of food, it isn’t exactly suitable IMO. I think the 50 is more suited for food.
I have the 85mm 1.8 at the moment and I'm trying to decide if I want to buy the 90mm macro and sell the 85mm or keep it. I'd say sell after this video though, the bokeh is just slightly softer at 1.8
@@jeroenvdw Hey man. Thanks for watching the video. Actually, if you don't need the funds urgently, just hold on to the lens as they are afterall for different purposes. However, if you need the money to buy the new lens, then yeah, I would do that too. :)

@@Lofote oh those cinema lenses. That doesn’t exactly count 😂 but oh I didn’t know that all gm are linear focus by wire. I’ve seen reviews saying the same thing. Like the speed of the turning affects the focus throw 🤔
@@BernardLau1991 haha, for me they do, they do have the SEL name and are listed on the same page as the others on Sony webpage ;)... But yeah, they are different of course. Yes, the speed of the turning affects the focus throw on non-GM-lenses, all GM lenses so far seem to have this fixed. I am not sure if this really applies to *every* GM lens, nor do I know if there is some non-GM-lens (except the ones we talked about) that also have this feature, but at least 24-70, 70-200, 85 GM etc. lenses have the linear focus-by-wire.
Nice video brother, very detailed and informative. Am getting the 90mm, much love from SouthAfrica.

my only complaint is that AF for video not the best haha
I do agree, the sony 90mm 2.8 is great lenses I done the research over years I will buy this Lense 90mm 2.8 . Thank you for make this Video

yeah AF on this lens ain't great haha. Depending on the kind of portraits you are taking I guess
Thank you ! Make me decide for 90 mm is also in special price for $725
You're welcome!
This is a great review!

Thank you :)
I have both 90mm and sigma 85 1.4 and the 1.4 is too good to pass on for night photography.
I want to get the 85 mm soon too hahaha
I’m late but I’m glad I found someone with both. I am thinking about buying both the Sigma 85mm and Sony 90mm.
Awesome
One!
