2019 Rockwood Pop Up Manual Winch Install | Electric Winch Be Gone!

  • If you remember, last summer while we were yard camping for a week, the electric winch started lifting our popup roof all on its own. It bent the winch mount, it ripped canvas from the roof... so to SAVE the week, I installed a local trailer winch which required a little cutting and a little welding, but it got the job done. Now that it's Spring and the camper is out of storage, I ordered a manual winch from Goshen Stamping Company. This is the install.

    Thank you for making this video! We just got the same camper and my winch system is giving me trouble already after 1 trip. Went to bed pretty stressed out last night, but seeing your video this morning just short-cut me to the solution. Manual winch here we come! :)

    Hi from Halifax, Nova Scotia! Thank you so much for posting this video. We have a 2012 Flagstaff Classic 425D that has an electric winch with no manual option as I broke off the very tiny manual screw bolt. After 9 years of camping, we haven't had any issues YET. I much prefer a manual option so I think that I'll go ahead with this modification. Happy camping!

    Thank YOU for all the video’s, already subscribed
    The wife and I have been thinking of buying our first pop up and we already knew all the models that Rockwood makes. We are so thankful to have seen your video, oddly enough the first one I found was the water damage by the unsealed mess that Rockwood built, we were so Mortified by all the rust and damage your tear down was revealing. We were as well upset about all the rust you found under the axle on your new Rockwood and learned why it was so rusted. It’s was just so rude of the Sales person to not inform you of the plethora of rust under your Brand New Camper by Rockwood. Anyone interested in buying a used and or New pop up should watch your video on the water damage first and thank you for listening all the products used for your outstanding repair!
    I like to think in the back of my head that I’m just as hand as you with the ability to do repairs but I’m not. Your video’s tho will definitely be referenced should I need to do any of the repair or preferred upgrades you’ve done. “Well done good Sir, well done.”
    ps: Shame on you Rockwood builders and Quality Control Inspectors!

    Oh wow that worked out fantastic, I’ve always been worried about my winch going rogue on me when I first brought our pop up home. That silly electric switch that raises and lowers the top was always my concern especially with a nephew who likes to play with buttons. I put a keyed switch in place of the toggle and a heavy duty battery disconnect next to it. Redundancy with peace of mind.

    Thanks for the video. I have a 232ESP and the drive gear on the motor sheared off while raising it and the roof came crashing back down. Luckily I was at home getting ready to clean it after a trip and not away from home in the middle of the woods or something. During further inspection I noticed the pawl on the clutch was completely worn out. I bought this camper new just over a year ago. I ordered replacement parts for the winch but you have me thinking this is the way I need to go.

    • @sstressfl

      This is what made me go manual. The winch lifted the top by itself and caused a lot of damage. Scary stuff... just like yours breaking and the roof falling! Thx for the video, I'm replacing my electric with a manual as well. I noticed you're cranking clockwise to raise, was the original electric winch counter clockwise to raise with the cable spooling underneath the pulley? I have a 1970 ESP and mine spools from the bottom but you have to go counter clockwise to raise it. 👍

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  3 года назад +2

      I followed the instructions from the manual that came with the winch. The cable entry is usually opposite of the mountin gplate, so in this case with it mounted upside down, the cable feeds into the bottom and the direction of rotation is what the direction is :) Works wonderfully!

      I left it for the remainder of the year! It was still rock solid when I replaced it finally with a new cable. The only issue I had was when the clamps/fasteners passed thru the frame I had to pull the cable over slightly to clear. Not ideal but it worked to get us to our next camping trip. Even after I ordered and received the new cable I kept putting it off until this spring :) here’s the video of me installing the new cable ruclips.net/video/LQIQncry1T0/видео.html It was really easy and if you have the time to wait for the new cable to arrive I’d highly recommend it. The ferrule crimping tool alone was $50. And I have to admit the fix made me nervous every time I lifted the roof. I sleep better knowing there is a solid new cable installed 👍

      The only thing I can think of ....is the mounting point of the trailer bracket has to be completely level (mine bent when my electric winch went crazy and I had to use a car jack and heavy hammer to bend it back into shape) or the chassis of the winch will flex and the gears wont align correctly.

    What did you do about the relay and all the electrical connections that were part of the original winch?

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  Год назад +1

      The winch requires a positive and a negative power source. Two wires. The winch is self contained… all the electronics are onboard. Once you remove the winch you simply tape the two wires up and tuck them away with a zip tie. Super simple. If In the future you ever want to put the power winch back on, it’s plug and play simple.

    How about when you let it down? Do you have to hold pressure on the handle to lower slowly? I have to install next week due to broken tension spring on link stop. New cost on winches I found are like $125 +.

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  Год назад

      It’s has a built in clutch. It’s effortless to lower :) and you can let go of the handle and it just stops. It’s wonderful compared to the $500 electric winch! It’s quiet. Easy to control. And won’t randomly fail and destroy your camper due to some mysterious electrical problem 👍

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  2 года назад

      Awesome news :) And yes! When I replaced the malfunctioning electric winch, I had to fix it the same day so I found a local winch for a utility trailer. It did not have a bolt clamp on it and the instructions said to weld the cable to itself so thats what I did. But once I welded it, it was ruined. Had to get a new cable when I got the new winch. You should be 100% fine with the existing cable.

    I have recently purchased the same camper. I have had some issues, but nothing compared to the problems you have experienced. Have you considered contacting your dealer, or better yet Rockwood.? It seems like most of these issues should be covered by the warranty. Rockwood customer service has been good to me so far.

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  3 года назад +1

      Two things... the components are poor quality. On the second day of ownership when my sink faucet sprayed water into the air, I realized it was an unserviceable plastic faucet. Total junk. So I decided not to warranty it because they would just replace garbage with garbage. When my camper was towing sideways, it took weeks for them to look at it, then weeks for them to finally send it to a trailer frame straightening and alignment shop. In total with warranty work, we did not get to use our camper for 2 months after we bought it. So when the electric winch failed... the dealer said "too bad you are 1 month out of warranty and should have installed a shut off switch to kill power when not using the winch because these things do that".... as if it was common knowledge. They should have said that when I bought it. I have now heard from many others that they have suffered similar failures. Then the dealer kindly offered to send someone out to help me get my roof back down safely but it would cost me. I figured it out, no thank you Mr Dealer.

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  3 года назад

      As long as everything is greased correctly its very easy to crank. Which is actually a true plus versus the electric winch. The electric winch will over power a poorly greased system and can start to damage parts. But you can feel the resistance with a manual winch. You'll know when it's time to grease things. And it cranks pretty quickly. Like any old popup I've used. Maybe 30 seconds?

    Still doing research on what trailer to buy. If you had to get another one. Would it be this one or another one? Thanks

      Wow thats a great question. Knowing everything I know now, I would buy this unit again. I would get rid of the winch and put in a manual winch. I'd seal the roof screw heads and corner pieces, roof fan and side moldings. I'd ask the dealer to verify the alignment (our trailer was towing sideways and they fixed it under warranty). And I'd look for RUST underneath before taking it home! And once home... I'd remember to stake down the awning when it was out AND make sure it was leaning down when it rained. I know this trailer so well now... and we have made amazing memories in this thing.... yeah, I'd buy this one.... but only if I could get a really good price. If I was single? I'd buy a corvette and stay in hotels and airbnbs LOL But seriously, I wouldnt trade this time for anything. I love the family the Lord has given me and thankful for this trailer and the experiences we've shared together.

      So what would you pay for one now? How would you go about getting the price you want to make it a win win? For both parties you and them. Thanks

      @@downhill615 We paid 11k for new in 2019. Obviously things have changed since then so you have to balance the need vs the price. And if the 2280 is the only one you want, the price will get harder to negotiate. Also inventory is a bit scarce. There are some things my wife and I want to do but we're waiting for things to level out a bit more. Perhaps, Lord willing, next year will look different.

      @@sstressfl out here on the west coast. They want 15,000 or more.

      @@downhill615 I’ve heard some out west say as high as 30k. 15k is at least close to msrp 👍 Again, balance against the need or desire 😀 When you have kids that are growing up fast, it can motivate you to pay a little extra. I hope you find a good one that is well built. Perhaps you could ask them to install a manual winch included in the purchase 🤗
