You can find 4" thick XPS from both Owens and DOW, but you might have to call contractor supply places and order it. Menards usually has it in stock. It's the only store I know of that stocks it. But Menards aren't built where people surf.
Thanks for showing how to glue XPS together and for the idea with making pressure with screws. There is no Home Depot in my country, it would be nice to know the size of the XPS boards
Hey, great videos. I got a question, i would like to build my own board, but im a big guy, 6'3, around 260 pounds, and i need really big board, probobly around 10-11 feet. So my question, is there a proper tecnique to glue blanks, since all the foam panels come 8ft long? How do you do an 11 footer?
Just glue the foam above 8ft together with the stringer. For 260 you don't really need an 11ft board. I shaped a 7' 1" that holds up to 250lbs. It all about volume not length.
@@Surfmus I am a bigger guy and am planning on gluing another panel on the last foot in order to add more rocker/performance. Going for a 6ft2 w 3.5 "thickness groveller
Starting a XPS Fish board. If I have questions along the way, is there a Forum you can recommend? For one, I’ve watched these videos 2x and missed when to paint the foam....
I need advice installing a bow eye in a epoxy foam raven paddle board. I plan to pull it behind a electric recumbent bicycle , with a yeti cooler and some ice and drinks on top while towing, I plan to have two bicycle wheels at the back. I have 4 tie points up front but need a tie point at the very front and it has to be strong. My plan is to either drill a horizontal hole large enough to glue a piece of carbon fiber tube with like a 6" set back from the tip from side to side of the board or drill a long hole at the bow to glue in a stainless eye bolt. Can someone please give me some suggestions please. Thanks
Great videos Andrew! You've inspired me to try making my own board! I have a question... Is PIR foam insulation board suitable? I have read you can use poly resin on it without it melting, but no real answer online about its suitability for a surfboard core. Any ideas?!
could i cut the foam into "boards". Then use the heat wire thing to shape those boards to the same profile as the stringer. then laminate them all together vertically?
That is more or less how I do it. I generate a template in software, print it exact size, cut the foam into stringer shaped "boards" that are just a touch over-thickness. Glue those together and sand to a levelled rockered XPS blank. I've done it with and without a stringer, and it is easy to make highly rockered boards in this manner. Tbh, all those glue lines are pretty good stringers and the biggest issue with this approach is the board will be pretty stiff - not much flex. Glue lines may be hard to hot wire through. I prefer to glue layers in this orientation because most sanding is then at right angles to the glue joints which works better. Xps and polyurethane glue sand at different rates, which was a major problem for me on my first board where I laminated as in the video. not to say it can't be done, but I wasn't good at it.
The only xps foam I can find in Northern California is 1" and scored to snap. Does anyone have a source in N. CA? If I were to glue and glass a board made with the scored board, would it be much weaker than the 2" non-scored version?
Hey Andrew man...Cool video...you know a few tricks hey bro.....where you at? I am in Ottawa Canada. Yes and getting myself ready to do some River Surfing. Do not know how I will be but bro I am gonna try to shake the grounds......we should stay in contact
i gotta tell you bud that hot wire cutter is freaking epic lmao. i like your style man 🤘
This is gonna be fun to watch! Thanks for making these rad vids brosef!!
Oh, thanks for the lessons! I followed them step by step. It looks like I did it

Can't wait to see the rest of this!
Hello Andrew, your tutorials are amazing, thanks!! I have a question... Can I glue XPS with latex paint as you do in other videos with the EPS??
Glue it with epoxy resin.
very good, very smart idea. tks n good luck

I found the final sizes in the catalog of blanks you mention in the next video
How long before the Glue sets up what's the time to work with it ?
he, is it possible to glue two pieces of foam lengthwise together?
Yes. But the structure comes from the composite layup shell.
Nope because the rocker is always more than the 2".

After the hotcoat.
How'd it go?
Hot wire is cool but a table saw seems much easier. Probably better cut too
Sheet of hardened pre-preg carbon between the foam, form the foam in a rocker shape to dry, voila.

Is it the yellow color one? If so, yes.
Where can I pick up an XPS blank that size?
This may well be a stupid question, but why not just get a thicker foam board ?

I have shaped them in slabs if that's what you referring to. Blanks come out nicely.
Thanks for your video. I was looking for an alternate material to build my own fishtail skimboard at about 54 inch length.
I would have just done to first laminate on the flat floor with weight on top.
:D id your dial controls the voltage then how is the voltage to the transformer 110V? :D

You could create the rocker when you glue the two together
Yes. And that would be a better way.
hi! did you try with a blank foam.. if yes where did you get it ( i'm from montreal) I made 3 boards thanks for your video (sorry for my english )lol
What density works best in EPS and XPS?
My opinion, XPS for sure. It's what I'm making my SUP board out of
1.5 lbs
Great video mate. Love it. Watching your surfboard build series.
What size/Gauge Nichrome Wire do you recommend?
Thanks.
28 gauge works for me
Have you tried foam lok adhesive
How much does it relatively cost to make a surfboard, I live in California looking into make my own board since I live 5 mins from the beach
$275-$475

The theme around 14:50 sounds like Crayon Pop's 1234 song. If not, they stole it from them...no disrespect to Andrew w...it's not your fault.
what is the size of the XPS board
Couldn't you just lay the foam sheets on a flat level surface and place heavy objects ontop to keep them squeezed together?
how thick is each one of the XPS foam?
2 inches
How offen you may make the video of this process?
Merci
They stopped selling the 2inch purple foam.. :(
What is the hotcoat?
Filler coat.
Hi!! what is the glue that you use to stick the foam?
Polyurethane glue: Gorilla glue. A b*tch to shape corners, strong though.
Maneiro😀👍🤘🇧🇷
What kind of glue is it?
Poly. Gorilla glue. Horrible for shaping the corners. But strong and water proof.
I am fixing up and Old broken Sail Board you call it I guess? Lol bro
Check out the Stodoys plans if you want to make it better.
