Helpful and objective review. Great having the pictures side by side. Differences are stark. The k50 is even better

I was on my way to buy the d5200' while having in my pocket a canon s100 in my pocket. As i am a painter, the color and sharpness are top consideration, then the d5200 did not offer better results. Then the seller offered to try the k-30. Needed just to try. From then on it is a love story.

For a while now Pentax lenses have been kicking everyone's ass

He said that Nikon had better noise control - Maybe the software is removing more noise but here is how it really works. More pixels require more electricity (at any ISO) electricity produces the noise. So the Pentax with less pixels but larger pixels will produce less noise at any ISO. Can you see more light through a straw hole or a paper towel drum hole... In order to get more light through a small hole you have to turn up the electricity (in order to make the sensor more sensitive) or expose it for a longer period of time.

I'm late to the party. Had a K1000 in the past and it served me well. Figured the K30 would be a smart buy and have not regretted it since. From the video, sounds like I did good. Thanks...

I have a Nikon D5100, and just ordered a Pentax K30. It seems to outclass the Nikon in many respects, but, there are 2 things that the Nikon might have over the Pentax: predictive autofocus and the D5100 14-bit RAW files vs. the K30's 12-bit. I doubt this translate to too much in all but the most demanding situations, I hear, however, the K30 gets astounding performance out of its sensor. I also think that the AA filter on the K30 might be thinner rendering the possibility of sharper images.

The real reason that the Pentax has better images (or potentially better) is because it has bigger pixels... First of all, 24 megapixels vs 16 megapixels, only dictates the print size... The pixel size of the Nikon 5200 is 15.3 um(squared), while the Pentax K-30 has a pixel size of 22.9 um(squared)... Which is actually close to the size of a full frame pixel. The Nikon D810 has a pixel size of around 23.7 um(squared)... This means that the Pentax pixel size is 1.5 times greater or 33% larger or the Nikon is only 66% the size of the Pentax. Point and shoot pixel size are around 1.5-2.5 um(squared)... The larger the pixel the more data it can acquire, store, process... in terms of detail, color depth, dynamic range etc., etc... Once the sensor has the data it is up to the software to process it, the better the software the better the final picture. Sometimes gains can be made by shooting RAW and having a full fledged computer with excellent software process the data instead of the camera's software... The largest pixel size is 53.5 um(squared)... so as you can see even a full framed sensor as with the Nikon D810 is about average size for a Full frame... This would indicate that the Pentax APS-C, being a smaller sensor would be above average size for this sensor and actually be in the same league as an average full frame sensor... The number of pixels only refers to the size of the picture and not the quality or detail while the size of the pixel determines the quality of the picture (subject to software processing)... Crop factor and quality of the lens also play into the final quality of the picture... The Pentax K-30 and K-50 are just about identical with the K-50 having a slight advantage of 51,600 iso vs K-30's 12,800 iso... Most everyone would probably opt to stop around 6400 iso and turn a flash on or increase the exposure time... That being said, the K-30, if being blown out the door at bargain prices is essentially the same as the K-50 (software mod - changed a number in the software from 12,800 to 51,600)... A hack could have done that... hahahaha...

Jim Richard Good description of pixel count vs image quality.
Pentax took the high road here.
Don't fall into the pixel trap...

I had the D5100 for about 10 days, I was not happy with the results with the price I paid for it, I got the K-30 right after, and I am in love with it.

I'm in the market for buying my first DSLR camera, I'm 17 and in highschool, and I want a camera that will allow me to take the best depth of feild photos possible, superior video would be a secondary benefit for me; not as desired. I've narrowed my choices down to either the Pentax K-30 or the Nikon D5100 (and now the more expensive D5200), I want to believe what you guys are saying about Pentax, but the image/video quality of the Nikon's I'm seeing on youtube visibly seems much more superior.

Cit: "...there's more colour speckling at ISO3200..." - it could be related to the K-30 image being interpolated to 24MP.

I question the author's objectivity. Based on the images he displays, I cannot find an example where the Nikon approaches the Pentax in dynamic range, clarity, or detail. The "noise suppression" of the Nikon is simply lost detail in the digital negative.

  • @MohanJan1954

Pentax K-30 is an under-rated camera which gives good images. Its raw files are in open source DNG format and so can be readily opened directly with Adobe software. It is weather resistant but be careful to use WR lenses (WR - weather resistant). The kit lenses are not WR. The Nikon D5200 sensor has a higher DxO mark score on all counts which objectively is a better sensor. D5200 has an articulated screen while K30 does not. The image quality depends on the lens used and the settings.

You're right ...Pentaprism + awesome image quality at low light setting alrdy said everything...unfortunately ppl still tried so hard to say nikon 5200 or canon 650/700d are better than pentax k30...let them be...

  • @BarnET0

The Pentax K30 has less noise in the higher ISO range. This difference however is very small and i prefer the sensor of the D5200 becouse of the extra detail.
However i do prefer K30/K50 body. 100% viewfinder more controls and weathersealing making it a more bang for buck camera.

true but he tests the D5200.
The D5200 is a far more capable camera than the D5100
The AF system is now borrowed of the D7000.
Still prefer the rugged body of my K30

K30 should be compared to 7000d, it's so much better than d5200 or the over hype 650d or 700d in term of image quality

  • @JasonJaggersphtoography

go to dpreview.com and compare the image quality side by side at different iso's sure looks like the Pentax is allot sharper and Pentax noise reduction wins hands down. the 16 vs 24 mp is a armature augment I have a old canon 5d and make 30+ inch prints when processed correctly.

  • @songboy40

so, you strapped a sigma lens to both these dslr's. . I found this video because I need an all weather camera, and the Pentax was suggested by a friend. I'll be doing testing of my own when I get the k30.... Guess what. You're doing something wrong. The D5200 is an OK little cam for the money. But there is no way the colors drift off and soften like that. Why hasn't someone else pointed this out? why are there thousands of great photos taken by both cameras? This is a poorly done hit job.

Well, this reviewer loves to hear himself talk. The problem is that he says very little that is intelligible. The review could have been done in less than 10 mins. It's shocking how poor the images shot with the Nikon are. Plus, you can get the Pentax K-30 with the 18-55mm lens for $549 from Amazon. I can't see how anyone would choose the Nikon D5200. The Pentax K-30 body can be had for $499. Get a superior lens and you're in business. The K-30 seems to be the best entry-level DSLR around.

  • @willdb6114

Bla bla bla... the Pentax is so obviously better, it's staring us in the face from the images! Sharper, cleaner, less luminance noise - there's more colour speckling at ISO3200 but that's easy to get rid of in a nondestructive way.

Jesus christ, nearly 19:00 of clutching at straws and rationalization to try to make a clearly inferior nikon sound better than a much cheaper pentax. Pentax doesn't have the market share it once did with film cameras, and they are forced to make up for it by offering a superior product at a cheaper price. Get over it.

  • @Stormwatch153

Man, this video show only your lack of knowledge about Nikon cameras. Nikon has the worst (unusable for any serious work) JPEG compression amongst all of the DSLR makers, you should test only RAW vs RAW...then you'll see how exactly is the Nikon far far ahead of Pentax and Canon.
