Excellent work. I am stumped that anyone would actually attempt to be contradictory about his playing. He has clearly spent his life going for mastery. His hard work has clearly paid off. Thanks for the post.
Very nice! Just met him in Livermore a few days ago and he mentioned that he does lessons online. He and the other performers were simply amazing! Mike is definitely a one man band (with lots of pedals and great hair).
I'm so glad I know what you guys are talking about and the fact the interviewer clearly has knowledge of guitars in general, this makes the questions much more constructive and valid and helps Mr Mike to elaborate much more expressively on his techniques and approach to playing guitar, all in all, a wonderful free video displaying an excellent explanation of technique application, thank you!
Have to mention the names Michael Hedges (practically invented this style), Justin King (made a big splash opening for John Mayer playing this style), and Khaki King (plays with Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters notably on the track Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners).
Love this interview. Inspiring! Bringing it to a more beginner level I'd love to see a video tutorial of a basic song with some of these percussive notes added in. I had a lot of fun with your britney spears lesson; I always end up tapping a bass drum and high hatting the eighth notes on that tune. Now i'm going to try to do it purposefully and with some power chords, maybe even in drop D. Yahoo!
Is the intro to the video a song of his, because it sounded really cool!! Hopefully somebody knows whether he just made it up or if it was a song of his or a cover...
Not really my style sometimes but this guy's approach is pretty Dawesome. (sorry, couldn't resist. He probably gets that one all the time. His explanations are genuinely inspiring, though.)
Is that "lovely sort of teardrop-shaped thing" a stock pickguard, or did he add that himself? I doubt anyone knows, or even will reply, but I'm curious.
justin is already my favorite teacher and now mike is reaching the same spot on my list..thumbs for both of you..
Excellent work. I am stumped that anyone would actually attempt to be contradictory about his playing. He has clearly spent his life going for mastery. His hard work has clearly paid off. Thanks for the post.
What a wonderful teacher. Very articulate and direct.

For such an intimidatingly good guitarist, it's great to see he's a nice guy with it. and man can that guy play a guitar!.
So refreshing to see an artist that is not using electronics to get the sound. How creative.
You always know the "right" questions to ask to make these interesting. Amazing player too, great job as always
Great interview (great series of lessons too), what a gifted and generous interviewee to share so many secrets. Talented buggers the pair of you!
Thanks so much Justin. This guy is amazing and has given me a start to this type of playing. I've always wanted to try it.

Great Stuff. Some of these techniques John Mayer uses :)
Did you ask him how long the average composition would take him? Just curious.
yes and it's nice to innovate it yourself at first :)
Not really my style sometimes but this guy's approach is pretty Dawesome.
(sorry, couldn't resist. He probably gets that one all the time. His explanations are genuinely inspiring, though.)
thanks justin
I leave all kinds of comments, but I dont find him at all pretentious or self important. Seems like a good guy.
Is that "lovely sort of teardrop-shaped thing" a stock pickguard, or did he add that himself? I doubt anyone knows, or even will reply, but I'm curious.
Kevin Benoit its a piece of unfinished wood developed to be like some sort of scratch plate for more percussive stuff
Lol watching him play is like "hmm i see him playing guitar and i hear guitar, but where is all this other sound coming from??"
Nice lesson
Key-airman Susan!? What's his name? @15:55
the correct name to put there is Michael Hedges and Mike looks up to him
He says it in the video.....?
