    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    The men hide the body of the Mountain Man (Bill McKinney) by buring him in the woods.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Like such other early '70s Hollywood films as Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971), Deliverance ponders violent instincts and definitions of manhood, ideas made all the more pressing by the period's escalating violence and assault on traditional gender roles. Regardless of these headier concerns, the critically praised realism of the action scenes on the river, with the actors performing a lot of the stunts, helped make the film a hit. Shooting on location on the Chattoga River in Georgia, cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond captured the appeal and the peril of the river's pristine isolation, enhancing both the adventure's visceral thrills and Dickey's philosophical inquiry into man's true nature. Deliverance was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, although Dickey's screenplay of his novel was passed over, as was Reynolds' star-making turn. With its chilling sense of infinite menace, Deliverance spoke to contemporary anxieties over what anyone could do, given the right (or wrong) circumstances.

    While filming the white water canoeing scene, Ned Beatty was thrown overboard and was sucked under by a whirlpool. A production assistant dove in to save him, but he didn't surface for thirty seconds. John Boorman asked Beatty, "How did you feel?", and Beatty responded, "I thought I was going to drown, and the first thought was, how will John finish the film without me? And my second thought was, I bet the bastard will find a way!"

      Actually, it's representative of its time. The '70s Renaissance was during the New Hollywood era, when filmmakers cranked out graphic content and subject matter that revolutionized the industry. A Clockwork Orange, Last Tango in Paris, Chinatown, The Exorcist, Caligula, etc., they all pushed the envelope. Hell, Deliverance was tame compared to a lot of films from that era.

      There's nothing minimalist about this. In 1972 this was considered a full frontal assault on the senses. The difference is it's more pure filmmaking -- today everything is digitally enhanced with overdone sound effects, too much rapid fire editing, and CGI effects.

      I would've held on to it long enough for a little "extra protection" at least until getting close back to the destination then tossed it in the river like Ed did with the toothless man's rifle. It would've been too much of an indicator for the Sheriff or other prying eyes.

      Maybe it would have been a nice Keepsake, but I think you're wrong. The further away from that shotgun and that Dreadful body they could get, the better off they were. One thing does trouble me. They left their fingerprints on everything. The body, the gun, even the arrow they pulled out of the guy's body. Everything they touched had their fingerprints. So how are they supposed to live with something like that?

      I say it's a subtle reminder that Lewis perhaps isn't the Leatherstocking he thinks he is. You know, more concerned with bows and arrows and canoes and flattering sleeveless wetsuit vests than with basic camping gear that any Cub Scout would carry on a trip.

    • @johnbonaccorsi5378
      @johnbonaccorsi5378 Год назад

      @@moogyboy6 If you get a chance, you might want to look at what Quentin Tarantino says about Lewis in "Cinema Speculation," his (Tarantino's) recent (2022) book. He points out that Lewis is playing a role, a role in which he's comfortable and that he can play well---i.e., he's not intimidated by the interlopers, as are the three other men---but a role nonetheless. Back in Atlanta, if he had to go to a bank to get a business loan, he'd know how to play that role, too, i.e., he'd put on a suit and tie and comport himself in the middle-class way. A real leatherstocking, as you say, i.e., a person of the kind Lewis is playing, wouldn't be able to do that. PS I'm not plugging Tarantino's book, to which I have no connection. Just thought you might appreciate that observation, in connection with your own observation. Having let a relative borrow the book, I don't have it in front of me, so I can't present you Tarantino's actual words.

    Very few movies portray murder as well as deliverance in my eyes. A lot of movies can create larger than life villains and make it easy to not care when they pass but deliverance shows that really isnt the case. Despite how evil someone can be sometimes murder is still murder and just shows how horrific it is to take life of another.

    These guys really need to know how to hurry a body. That's to close to moving water... And not nearly deep enough. Use that knife to dig deeper...... And dig big enough tgat arms go down by the sides. Cover with dirt and PACK.. then more cover and some dead fall on top in a scatter pattern. Then get rid of all foot prints in the area. Then get the HELL out if there
