Reynolds and Voights relationship is the best part of the movie. They're obviously good friends, but Reynolds is always proving that he is tougher, and more daring. Ed, knows who he is, but enjoys that Lewis pushes his boundaries. The irony is that after Lewis breaks his leg, Ed rises to the challenge, and "delivers" them back to safety.
He becomes weak and whatever it is we get from socialization saves him. I was at the James Dickey reading where he got interrupted by a phone call. I think he said 'I have just sold the rights to my book for a million dollars,' when he got back.
This is the greatest movie ever made.....it keeps mentally ill city slickers in the city so they don't bother country folk. And no they don't run around doing this. But this is a psyop to keep them away from good old fashioned food growers.
One of many components that made this an unforgettable film was the actors doing their own stunts. Apparently, Voight demanded to scale the 200 foot cliff himself. He thought it would be a cheat to use a stunt man. Although Lewis was initially the survivalist, Ed became the true champion of the quartet. Brilliant nightmare of a movie!
There is an interview somewhere in which Jon Voight says that when he first met Burt Reynolds. Burt initially eyed Jon with suspicion thinking that Jon would try to steal the movie away from him. This scene is pure irony because the 4 main actors worked so well together. Their work stands on its own. I am sure that none of them over playing Ned Beatty’s part.
The story is the scene was first filmed with a dummy in the canoe. It looked fake, so they reshot it with Burt going down the white water. After the scene, with Burt injured, the director said it still looked like a dummy in the canoe.
This story takes place in a *fictional* Cahulawassee River valley. On the other hand, "Of course you didn't see people like that! They've been killed! 40 years ago!" :p
Most of it was filmed on the North Carolina section...and the reason you didn't run into any mountain folk is because you were never deep in the mountains on there turf i promise you there are people like that up there don't believe me go deep up in there and find out.
According to Turner Classic Movies, John Boorman wanted Lee Marvin and Marlon Brando to play Ed and Lewis, respectively. After reading the script, Marvin said he and Brando were too old, and suggested that Boorman use younger actors instead. Boorman agreed, and cast Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds.
He was originally supposed to be a bigger part of the film---but then they decided to feature Voight in a larger part and they thoroughly apologized to Burt because they had planned to shoot a lot more scenes and dialogue with him
I loved the hospital scene when Burt wakes up and Jon whispers to him that they had to change their story. Burt awakes up and quickly says what happened to the rabbit 🐇? I remember nothing after that. Nothing! The scene was brilliant. Fine acting. It shows that the Lewis character is smart and a quick thinker too. The friendship ran deep. Survival is not just physical. It is mental, spiritual and emotional too. The film worked.
Everything happened the way it was supposed to. Drew had to die otherwise he would of cracked under pressure and told the law what really happened. One of the best films ever made.
This movie would have been over when they got lost in 2015 lol. "Siri whats the quickest way out of here...." or during the rape encounter : 911 whats your emergency? Some guys here are about to rape us help! **throw phone so it buys time to trace** lol
This movie was a big hit and catapulted burt Reynolds into superstardom. A cult hit doesn't make a working actor a superstar . I miss the days when our top celebs looked like burt a real mans man !
I heard that REYNOLDS was a choice to play michael corleone in the Godfather which came out the same year 1972...but marlon brando said if REYNOLDS is in that film he will quit lmao
Well, look at Lewis before Drew falls out of the canoe. He keeps glancing towards the cliff line and tells, “Don’t stop, Ed!” and, “No, go on!” He saw something on the cliffs above. The whole reason they buried Drew’s body is because they weren’t sure if he had a bullet in him or not.
It's actually never shown the bullet wound. He is seen "Shaking his head" and "jumping in" not "falling". He was also in quite a frantic panic in the scenes prior. The director has then confirmed on the Voice commentary that he couldnt "do it anymore" and gave up on life...
even if they didn't, it's a MONSTER COINCIDENCE that they really were being stalked by the other hillbilly who just happened to go and get another gun and then try to kill them.
in the book, Ed sees a sudden and unnatural puff of wind part Drew's hair - in other words, he sees Drew's head being grazed by a bullet - causing Drew to go limp and fall out of the canoe. the next day when they find Drew's body, they have Lewis look at the crease on his head, and Lewis tells them it was caused by a bullet.
When Burt tells you that "now you get to play the game", that's the moment you become the main character.
💯 exactly

BINGO ..an interesting reversal!!
This is the greatest movie ever made.....it keeps mentally ill city slickers in the city so they don't bother country folk. And no they don't run around doing this. But this is a psyop to keep them away from good old fashioned food growers.
"now you get to play the game"...one of the greatest lines in movie history...
Damn it shadap
R.I.P Mr Reynolds....
Burt Reynold's acting was up there with the likes of Pacino & Brando in this film; he had it all!
Not even close.
Early on, the studio wanted Brando for the role of Lewis
@Klemheist yeah but it made the film.
@@jennifersman7990 How could Brando in a canoe be expected to read from cards on a raging river?
@Susie Q yeah you're right. He's above and beyond them
This movie gets better with time. It’s like a fine wine.

I don’t know that fact. He actually climbed that cliff himself? That’s both terrifying and brave.

The director said Reynolds overacting actually fit the character so he didn't try to rein him in.
Burt Reynolds legitimately injured his tailbone during the filming of the rapids scenes for this film.
The story is the scene was first filmed with a dummy in the canoe. It looked fake, so they reshot it with Burt going down the white water. After the scene, with Burt injured, the director said it still looked like a dummy in the canoe.
This was filmed on the Chattooga River in north Georgia!! I have camped there MANY times - and didn't run into ANY people like this!!!!!
This story takes place in a *fictional* Cahulawassee River valley. On the other hand, "Of course you didn't see people like that! They've been killed! 40 years ago!" :p
I live in Chattanooga and have been there. No people like this live there lmao
Because they're your kin
Most of it was filmed on the North Carolina section...and the reason you didn't run into any mountain folk is because you were never deep in the mountains on there turf i promise you there are people like that up there don't believe me go deep up in there and find out.
Those "people" was Hollywood stereotyping likely.

He was correct...
Very true, Boorman cast Reynolds after seeing him guest host the Tonight Show
This was a hard scene to film and it was done amazingly well. Second best scene in the movie
Which one was the best ? 😂😂😂

Thank you for serving, I wish you peace. 🙏
I thought Reynolds was the main charector and I thought it was weird that he was pretty much out of the movie in the last part.
He was originally supposed to be a bigger part of the film---but then they decided to feature Voight in a larger part and they thoroughly apologized to Burt because they had planned to shoot a lot more scenes and dialogue with him

@@phalynwilliams4119 No, he asked what happened in that last set of RAPIDS.
Jon Voight got top billing and Burt Reynolds got 2nd billing.
Easily my favourite survival movie ever. I love it❤
Ed was warming the bench long enough.
I miss you Burt Reynolds.
I remember proposing to my wife. I grabbed her shoulder and said "now you get to change your name!"
Ha ha that's funny. Thumbs up. Heard about the three rings of marriage ? [1] The engagement ring [2] The wedding ring [3] The suffer - ring.

Always wondered how this story might have gone if Burt Reynolds hadn’t been injured.
well it would have been a forgotten movie....lol
Crazy how a cell phone would have fixed all of this.
a water proof one hopefully.
Define 'fix'.
*NO SIGNAL*
Not in that canyon, even today.
You'd need a Ziploc with some rice
Everything happened the way it was supposed to. Drew had to die otherwise he would of cracked under pressure and told the law what really happened. One of the best films ever made.
You gotta play the game
They never make classic films like this anymore.
this is where ed takes command of the situation,he has to
The Chatanooga river where Diliverance was filmed, became a major tourist attraction after the films debute.
This movie would have been over when they got lost in 2015 lol.

That's assuming you got any reception out there.
Vam not anymore.
Nowadays the authorities would arrests the one who reported the crime
Assuming if anybody comes
You think Bobby would call that in?
GREAT CULT CLASSIC! !!
cult classic? its considered one of the best films ever made... a cult classic is erasurehead or some shit like that.
Anna

This movie was a total metaphor for the entire Vietnam War..
Never even thought of that but it sure is.
Definitely a lot of parallels
I’m afraid I don’t follow your metaphor. Please elaborate.
I heard that REYNOLDS was a choice to play michael corleone in the Godfather which came out the same year 1972...but marlon brando said if REYNOLDS is in that film he will quit lmao
The game of survival...
Didn't look like Drew was shot to me. Looked like he worked himself into a frenzy and hyperventilated and passed out.
The cadence is not what I expected
They don't *know* that Drew was shot do they?
They find his body later.
Ah, thanks.

The book makes it clear that Ed, who was in the canoe with Drew, saw the shot hit Drews head. They didn't make it as clear in the movie
I still say drew got dizzy and fainted then drowned. When they say he got shot how come they didn't find any gun shot wounds on him ?
in the book, Ed sees a sudden and unnatural puff of wind part Drew's hair - in other words, he sees Drew's head being grazed by a bullet - causing Drew to go limp and fall out of the canoe. the next day when they find Drew's body, they have Lewis look at the crease on his head, and Lewis tells them it was caused by a bullet.
