CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Lewis (Burt Reynolds) shares his philosophical point of view with Ed (Jon Voight) about the "game" of survival and the dangers of trusting a civilized system.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Like such other early '70s Hollywood films as Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971), Deliverance ponders violent instincts and definitions of manhood, ideas made all the more pressing by the period's escalating violence and assault on traditional gender roles. Regardless of these headier concerns, the critically praised realism of the action scenes on the river, with the actors performing a lot of the stunts, helped make the film a hit. Shooting on location on the Chattoga River in Georgia, cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond captured the appeal and the peril of the river's pristine isolation, enhancing both the adventure's visceral thrills and Dickey's philosophical inquiry into man's true nature. Deliverance was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, although Dickey's screenplay of his novel was passed over, as was Reynolds' star-making turn. With its chilling sense of infinite menace, Deliverance spoke to contemporary anxieties over what anyone could do, given the right (or wrong) circumstances.

As his good buddy Jon Voight said at his passing, "Burt, you were a true artist". He was indeed!
Burt Reynolds best roll he ever played. He played the game well. RIP.
Nah bandit
@@jasonburke4890 Burt said himself that Deliverance was the best role he’s ever played.
By far Smokey and the bandit
@@GooseBurt My God , I wish he had another chance to play Lewis's intensity again. I would have liked to have seen what he could have brought to a movie like Winter's Bone.
*role
Living through the 70’s I never thought I’d look back and long for them, but oh how I do...
I mean that’s really not the vibe this specific movie gives off lol
"
1:10 "Machines are gonna fail, and the system's gonna fail..." What a great line. Epic movie.

Democracy and truth will fail, thanks to the Trumpers.

RIP Burt....You did beat the river!
but at the cost of his leg
I don't think Burt was ever really given his due. He was a great actor and to this day he makes me weak at the knees.
Vkng vron
Reynolds only good in one movie. Deliverance.
@@Annihilate3275 shut up
To me what he meant was and it was what the movie was all about! He respected nature and the river. He was a natural athlete man, in real life and had a Divine relationship with the land! He knew the river could end life and give birth to life! He was one with the River!
I would've loved to have seen the outtakes to this one. Man, Burt really delivered lines well in this movie---"everywhere, anywhere..no where" and this exchange is just about perfect. Voigt and Reynolds so good--real stage presence. They don't make them like they used to. RIP Burt.
Interesting character, and the Reynold's charisma is on full display here.
I had a sinking feeling something was going to go horribly wrong.
Jon Voight covered up the beer can completely as to not to pay a royalty
Mr. Reynolds... Dear Burt... by far your best role ever, you should have got an Oscar for this acting. You will be missed sir, you were one of my childhood heroes...R.I.P and God speed.
You called?
??
1 problem was brando
Burt Reynolds was the biggest outdoorsman of the four men who went on this trip.
Burt Reynolds makes me want to be an outdoor survivalist.
With the way Burt looks in this movie, I could’ve sworn he could’ve been one one of Ahnuld’s commandos in Predator
The real reason a lot of people question why Burt never became a career super star is, because he was always casted in horrible movies. Once you put him in the right movie you could see his true acting skills. Like Deliverance, he needed movies that allowed him to show his skills. Smokey and the Bandit didn't do him justice.
He was a super star
Burt Reynolds not a superstar?? What? 😂🙄
Burt was a huge superstar.
Screw off, Smokey And The Bandit did him justice. That movie rules
White Lightning is a great one too
One of the best movies ever. The acting, the cinematography, the story.

This movie brought simplicity, beauty...and horror, together. Brilliantly!
We all undergo tests in this life. Look at what happened to these four Men. One of them didn't even survive. Another one had his leg broken. The other two?
Scarred for life!
This movie is chilling in it's realism- man's inhumanity to man happening then and still...
20/20 hindsight: "You don't beat this river....., you survive it."
In 2020 this means so much more
He didn't say it like that.
fun fact: we had nuclear bombs and were months off from having a man on the moon before we had compound bows
Mongols were using compound bows when they rode with Attila hundreds of years ago.
@@yvc9 compound bows use a complex system of pulleys to increase arrow speed and decrease bow size, they definitely did not have the technology to develop things like that. the patent for the compound bow was granted in 1969
guess what: the great pyramids were the tallest man made structure til 1889 then was surpassed bye the eiffel tower.. just 134 yrs ago
Dag nabbit ,this takes me back to my friends as a kid. RIP Mr. Reynolds should got an Oscar this one.
The director of "Deliverance" summed up Burt as opposed to most other actors very succinctly. John Voight wanted a 15 minute warning on the set of Deliverance before the camera rolled so he could run around and make himself out of breath and sweaty if an intense scene was about to be shot. Burt Reynolds said, "give me a 30 second warning." He then spritzed himself with water to simulate sweat, and started breathing hard, pretending to be out of breath to shoot the same scene that Voight needed the 15 minutes of preparation for.
RIP Burt Reynolds. There will never be another like you.
I guess it's 'method acting' versus actual acting chops.
That's probably why Jon Voight---no "h" in the first name, by the way---is the one who holds the movie together.
Burt was in great shape. So sad health issues whittled him down. This was a great role for him. He did his best work as Louis. RIP
Beautiful country where this was filmed. Northeastern Georgia on the North Carolina border. Still pretty remote.
Rod you know hat this movie is about??
You think thats beautiful? Check Alaska out.
You think that's beautiful? Check Uranus out.
_(because that's what they do later)_
Shatooga river...allot of it was filmed in NC
Not really anymore. I recently went to the gorge where they filmed the climax. It's a state park, they won't let you go down, rangers patrol it to catch anyone sneaking around barricades and there are people everywhere. Dreamed of going here for decades. Georgia state parks ruined the experience. Still beautiful though.
Burt looks like Brando here.
Burt's character 'Louis' was the first time a prepper's mentality was shown in a major film.
What's a Prepper ? Being a foreigner, I'd like to know :)
He must had knew something we didnt till know
@@Lulustucru2393 you learn to survive off the land only depending on yourself for food and shelter. Build shelter hunt food and survive on your own
@@Lulustucru2393 it’s similar to the idiom “living off the grid.”
RIP Ned Beatty, perfect assisting to Burt's line.
This was Burt Reynold's finest hour. He WAS Lewis from the book.
This conversation comes up between two good buddies always. Part of getting older
You can’t beat the classics
Burt Reynolds = The best of the best. And always will be. RIP, legend.
"Machines are going to fail and the system's going to fail. And survival . . . who has the ability to survive . . . that's the game . . . survival."
And now 50 years after Lewis (Burt Reynolds) said those words it's all coming true.
Yeah Potato Prepper,
RUclips are going to fail.
It's been a couple years - how's the game going? Surviving all right? Smartphone still holding a charge?
Do you get signal in your bunker?
R.I.P. Burt. I had fun watching your movies.
Now in 2021...
Lewis (Burt)..is not wrong.
The "system" has bin failling, and it's not going to get better any time soon. Those that know how to survive, and be prepared will prevail.
Not one actor can compete with him he is one of a kind one great movie here
Rest in peace, Buddy. You were every bit as good as Marlon Brando. This film is proof.
Thank you and bless you. I will miss him forever
I agree. I just wish he had got more opportunity to play such roles. he was certainly capable of playing them.
@@MrKmoconne Agreed! It's a shame that we don't have more dramatic roles to look back on him in. I would've loved to have seen those pictures. He is missed.
as good as brando this 1 time but only once
Burt had a wicked sense of humour. Saw him in an interview with Ruby Wax once. He had her crying.
Burt was so gorgeous!
Rest in peace, Mr. Reynolds
Good ol' clangy aluminum Grumman canoes.
This was filmed on the Chatooga river in North Carolina and northeastern Georgia I've been rafting there beautiful country.
R.I.P., Burt.
One of the best films ever made.
I have John voights pencil from the glove compartment before it was sold..I had a dentist check it out! Rest In Peace Burt Reynolds! One of the best actors and movies around!
😂😂😂 well done Costanza!
Just drivin round in Jon Voight's car...
This is how those people go missing from the woods every year...the toothless ones! 😲😲😲😲
RIP, Burt Reynolds!
Perhaps, definitely a scene that has stuck in my memory, since one of the first times, I scene this movie!
Lewis is so badass
Burt Reynolds Rules. In this Great Movie!!
Yes why Lewis why do y'all go on these trips with me LOL LOL
Reynolds wasn’t a great actor.
But he was good, real good.
Would’ve ended up with an Oscar if not for centerfolds and the best action/comedy ever, which also happens to be one of the best comedies of all time.
Watch ‘Deliverance’ and ‘The Longest Yard’ and tell me I’m wrong.
Rest in peace Burt.
I swear to god I started to smoke cigars because of this
RIP Burt
I would just like to point out that the Bear snap on quiver is mounted to the bow wrong.
Oh fer CRISESAKES! 😲
I bought jon voight's car.
Most people didn't get that hahaha
+bomberbadj OK, fill us in...
+955472 its from an episode of Seinfeld.
OK.
I heard it turned out to have been owned by some guy named John Voight.
Ri.p burt u were one badass man. Hot as hell back in gunsmoke days he was Marlon Brando s clone . Quint the half native American. Quentin Tarantino's mom had a huge crush on him that's how he got his name. She had great taste . Godspeed Mr Reynolds
The best clip from this Movie - Duelling Bamjo's is missing from Movieclips
Oh well.......
What a great movie
That's it! Tomorrow I'm gonna buy a bow!
You can tell Lewis made that bow fishing kit
Insurance? Who needs insurance. There’s no risk.
No stuntman used in this film.
RIP Burt :( he along with Clint...legends of the 70s...makes all others since look like lil be'atchs
The movie the two of them did together, "CITY HEAT", way back in 1985, was quite amusing and entertaining. Especially the scene where Burt Reynolds at one point got dressed up as the Big Bad Wolf whilst wearing some sort of women's garment. And yes, seeing is believing...Here's to you, Mister Reynolds!
For a second my heart skipped a beat when I read RIP Burt along with Clint.... I know Clint has had a really long time too but I'm glad he's still with us. RIP Mr. Reynolds
I'd throw Charles Bronson in there too.
Here’s to ya, Lewis. RIP
That movie creeps me out. Never go camping where there is no other people😳😳
Archer brought me back to this gem
Pinky rings seem to have been en vogue in the 70s
Bert character was great
Epic movie. Period.
GREAT CULT CLASSIC! !!!
I wonder who has that gold ring Burt is wearing in these clips. I think it would be neat to have a piece like that. To own a ring Burt had on during this movie......just Burt cool!!! Oh.....where is it???
RIP fish at the end.
When Lewis shoots the fish, the arrow hits towards the head. When he reels it in, the arrow is mid-body.
Refraction of light hitting the water ?
Even plastic as a problem is mentioned in the book.
This river is called bull sluice it’s fun to go there I went there sometimes
lewis always bearing down on bobby
Burt at his best
Poor tubby..lewis wouldnt let him have nothing

I swear, Marvel must have based Namor's early 2000's comic design off of Burt in "Deliverance".
Lewis is right machine and the system going to fail some day then survival who has the ability to survive
The irony is that Lewis barely manages to survive the trip himself.
MrShobar Well he did get the gay hill person rapist using only the bow & arrow, while the gay hill person rapist had a 12 ga shotgun! That's survival, not irony. Barely surviving is still surviving. Plus he did not get raped, as an added bonus.
cause you don't beat this river
Burt Reynolds looked more badass without the moustache lol
That moustache made Burt a star but I don't think he knew how much it got in his way to becoming a super star.
"The machines are going to fail. The system is going to fail."
It felt like that at the height of the covid19 pandemic. Not even Burt Reynold's store-bought archery equipment could do much against that.
He must had knew something then
1.54 - 1.58
Jon sounds like Christopher Walken
Bet those two hillbillies who started the trouble with Ed and Bobby were stalking them the entire time.
In retrospect (after seeing the movie the first time) I’m sure they were.
i like Ed..he just wants to get drunk...same as me...i like my life
People missed the point about Lewis, I think. For all of his talk about survival & his passive-aggressive denigration of his friend’s’ masculinity, in the end they didn’t need him. This movie was about using what you have, when you need it.
They definitely needed him considering the fact the he single handedly saved both of the other 2 survivors
@@hunterbradshaw1995 That is true. He was in the position to use his bow & didn’t freeze. I guess that implies, then, that once he got injured, the others had to step up. The story becomes about learning what you’re capable of, when you no longer have the luxury of laying back. It’s about the savage, ruthless nature of all humans that gets covered over in a civilized, comfortable society.
Enjoy it now, Bobby..! Your time is a-comin'....
angling
Reynolds should have gotten the Supporting Oscar that year.
He carries the films entire first half and drives the story forward.
Even though he is arrogant his charisma, leadership and courage stand out.
Burt has regrets like all of us as we get older...none of us are perfect. If you want to see a more human side to him, check out the Piers Morgan interview from a year or so back. It's on youtube. And, yes, he was hot in this movie.
He squandered his money. That's why he's in such a difficult position today.
Never regrets with this incredible acting from.Bert!!
