Whoever compiles the score for true detective should be given every award under the sun, to find such a gem like lera Lynn who isn't extremely well known and to recognise a unique quality that her music and the mood of the show share, is quite genius. And ' I pity the fool' at the end of season 2 ep 2 is yet another brilliant choice not to mention Leonard Cohen.
***** T-Bone Burnett is a badass legend! He's worked with everyone from Michael Cimino in his debut film Heaven's Gate to the Coen brothers and all the way to his Oscar win for Crazy Heart.
BadBurrito It's actually a team: Lera AND T-Bone. Nic P and T-Bone are like BFF's in CA.. Nic P gives T-Bone themes for the songs and then he takes them to Lera to write with. This song was an idea Nic P had about "...a dead lover who comes back as a crow". I'm not trying to be "That 1-up Guy", I just thought knowing this will shed some light on the music going forward. T-Bone's been quoted as saying "...that bar is the heart of the show... the "psychosphere". It'll become clear later on". Hmmm.
Maybe it's just self pity. Maybe we want to get some rest from joy or neutral boredom. Or, give some aesthetic to that feeling. (I also do it with Led Zep's Baby I'm Gonna Leave You and Since I've Been Loving You.)
I think there is more beauty and pleasure in sadness. when you're sad your mind is open to all kinds of feelings and emotions, when you're happy you can only focus on sheer joy and nothing else.
+chalo rurua Very true, it's like when you're sad, your heart is empty, so you feel more different emotions and more relaxing, and when you're happy your heart is full, so all you feel is just love and joy! Both are great!
Also, rewatching the series. It’s like The Wire, it’ll stand up for a long time. Simply awesome cinematography in season two with all the overhead, outside shots.
@@Xrayflames season 2's ending was slightly disappointing but season 3's was far worse. Hopefully TD will eventually be back for a new and improved season 4. On a side note, Nic Pizzolatto has a new show in the works for FX called 'Redeemer'. It stars Matthew Mcconoughey and it's based on the novel 'The Churchgoer' so if season 1 of TD was anything to go by this should be great as well!
As a musician and a guitar player, I find this tune absolutely wonderful. The use of tremolo on the intro guitar is spectacular for an effect that's been some what undervalued. Also, the way those sad lyrics float up and down on that beautifully constructed melody is very cool. And what an unusual arraignment. I love this tune.
Wow. Lara Lynn gotta be the best songwritter I've seen in a lot of time... The lyrics are just from outter space. Weird, cryptic, but full of meaning at the same time.
Love her style, never really heard anything like this before, except maybe Chelsea Wolfe, but this seems more bluesy. Thanks True Detective for introducing me to a great artist. I love the fact that the first season introduced Townes Van Zandt to a wider audience with the song "Lungs," though "Nothin'" is his darkest masterpiece.
Omg Chelsea Wolfe is amazing! Never heard her before, exactly the type of music i'm looking for! Do you have more dark, "there is no hope in the world" kinda music? Love the lera lynn style
Julius Thomasson Thanks for asking, do I ever. I'm more into bluegrass/folk, rather than blues or indie, but here are some suggestions: -"Nothin'" by Townes Van Zandt. This song, is the truth about our existence, and most people either can't understand it or can't handle it. -"Chained to the Couch" by The Devil Makes Three. This band is finally getting some recognition, and they have a ton of great songs some more conventional others more personal. This is one of the latter, along with "Graveyard" which I love even more. -"Seven Devils" by The Goddamn Gallows. Fairly self-explanatory lol. Finally, although this doesn't fit the genre at all, if you are looking for "there is no hope in the world" kinda music, you MUST listen to "THE ETERNAL" by JOY DIVISION. Nothin' still has some hope, but THE ETERNAL is the most hopeless, it doesn't even want hope, it doesn't even want to be recorded! lol. Seriously though, Curtis actually committed suicide a couple months later. May your moments be meaningful, my friend.
Julius Thomasson Sorry for replying a second time but I'd also recommend The Be Good Tanyas' cover of "Waiting Around To Die," it is extremely haunting. TVZ is covered by many modern folk artists, to the point where his influence is almost a problem, because it's universally acknowledged (even, by some reports, by the elderly Dylan himself) that he is the greatest songwriter. Plus TVZ's "St. John the Gambler." That's 3 minutes you won't regret.
The Wilfred That was my thought exactly when I first heard it. It went so beautifully with the scene it was featured in, though, so I couldn't be too upset. It is by far one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard.
After watching the finale I've listened to this song maybe 10 times with a heavy heart. Great series. I didn't want it to end. I can't wait to see what's next.
Back again to listen this gem ...yea you're right I'm sad again..This song just hits different. People say that they didn't like season 2, but I loved it and this song is a huge reason for that.

When I first heard this song, I asked myself, "why didn't I write this?" It feels like it was pulled right from my guts. T-Bone Burnett has the best taste in music. I love you, dude. Thank you.
I absolutely love Season 2... Damn man nearly 10 years, 4 main characters, it was amazing and music was spectacular, camera shots were so fun. And Ray Velcoroooooooo
Season Two of True Detective was far superior to both True Detective season three and Night Country. Please check out seasons 1&2 of Tokyo Vice if you haven't seen it already. It's incredible-another underrated gem from HBO/Max

lomilias Same. I am hoping it gets a later release, especially since so many people seem to be looking for it. That second in the song where Woodrugh shuts off the lights on his bike, I knew I loved the song. This version is great too, but it doesn't have the same power as the one in the actual episode.
Noel Aranda It's to due with tone, according to something I saw Nic said. If they used this or 'Only thing worth fighting for', the tone would've been way, way too depressing. They have scenes in mind though that use these songs, like the bit with Lera, Colin, and Vince in the bar in Ep 1.
