I have a really special, amazing memory associated with this song, it’s the one song in my life that fills me with true melancholy. I don’t know if anyone will ever actually read this, but I think it’s quite a fun story for the love lovers out there. When I was 14, my mum and I went on holiday to Iceland. As soon as I saw the landscape from the plane I already felt like it was going to be a magical experience (I was also a 14 year old who romanticises EVERYTHING and 10 years later at 24 I am still the same lmfao). Anyway, we have a couple of excursions booked through our Hotel, one of them being driving out into the middle of nowhere to see the northern lights. So we are on the bus, I notice a cute blonde boy go past when I had already sat down, and then he sat one row from behind me, so we are pretty close in proximity on the bus. We stop a few times in different locations. On the first stop, he held up a bit of fencing for me and my mum to get through and there was a bit of elongated eye contact.. So 14 year old me is in love obviously, then we get back on the bus and we start playing footsie or whatever (this sounds so cringe but it was magical under all the stars and it being dark on the bus). At the second stop, my mum stays on the bus and I go out by myself. I’m staring at the stars (no northern lights but the stars alone were INSANE, no light pollution at all). All of a sudden I hear a hello, and then ALL of a sudden I have headphones being put on my head, and then this magical mantra starts playing… I stood there looking up at the stars and this song was on, I memorised the lyrics instantly and it was in my head the whole night afterwards.. We then spoke on the third stop and had a little holiday romance and now we just have eachother on Facebook hahahaha. I don’t know, but the moment was just so magical, and for this to be the song playing it just makes me think about how beautiful life can be and how special these moments really are.. And now I have what feels like a spiritual connection to this song !!
I think this is the chain of association. Your mind remembers things better if you attach multiple senses to it. You hear a song and remember something that happened long ago when you heard that song, or you eat / smell something and remember something else. For example I remember when I was little and we were waiting for my dad with my mum and dad worked late and a storm came and we were sitting in the car and the rain was falling. I remember the song that was playing on the radio even though this could have been like 25 years ago. Lucky for you to see the northern lights. I want to see them as well, on my bucket list. I can imagine this is a special song for you being attached to a special memory.
@@IaminToMiXing I have this with starry night (don mclean) , but not because the setting was so very pittoresque, just by the power of the song - it was very much banality itself where i heard it, but the stark contrast with those lyrics, the way he sings it (no sarcasm, irony, hyperselfawareness) it gets me everytime, and Im not one for sappy 70s songs
Heard this song on a local radio station in Denmark 4 years ago when I was there on vacation. This song is like a friendly ghost. It touched me and it`s been following me since.
I heard this song for the first time earlier today while watching an old episode of Revenge. Hearing it evoked some very powerful emotions in me, emotions I hadn't felt in years.I bought the song from itunes and went for a walk, listening to it on repeat. I don't know what it is about the song that hits me in such a powerful way. It's not even a genre I typically listen to. But now I can't get enough of it. I bought the rest of the album, and although I didn't know who she was yesterday, I now count myself as a huge Agnes Obel fan.

Songs and art in general make this effect to those who have enough sensitivity. You defnitely are not alone and music is a way to remind and celebrate it.
You´re english is great, nothing to apologise for. I can relate to your description of how songs can make us feel and help us through tough times. Thank you for sharing that! And this is indeed a beautiful song, mesmerizing and deep, it conquers my defences and opens me up, peeling of those layers of hardened emotional walls that the smith of time has hammered into place around me. And then i plundge into the river by the riverside, never in more need of the enlightened guide. But in the land of blind i stumble on, pass by dear traveler or stay and mourn.

Summer holidays during my schooling i used to spend 2 months in my granny's place. There was beautiful home in the countryside midst of tall rubber trees and river flowing downhill. I used to run along the plantation and to the riverside and throw pebbles into the water, swim in the river and spent so much time alone by myself. There are two emotions of the memory. one happy one of the time i used to spend there another sad, very sad one. after my grandparents died the place has lost the charm. Now when i go i sit by the riverside and think if i can time travel back to that time.
Well maybe not everyone likes this song but we lovers of this song knows one thing: Whoever you are, whatever you decided, however your life is going doesn't matter. This song touches to your soul and we all share a common fealing. Alone or not. This song will always have a meaning in our hearts until the day we die
It's been soooo many years... I used to listen to this song and adored it... I was in my early twenties. Oh God... I was a different person... I honestly had no worries... I had many friends and I was excited about life... Nowadays parts of this song come in my mind and just the feelings that evoked make me happy... Today I decided to listen to it again from the begging to the end... I am now on my late twenties and I am battling to be happy... Scared of the world, no more friends around, an emptiness although back then I had the need to listen to it just like I do now...
This song resonates with me so much. From my childhood to all the hardships I’ve been through. When I feel like I can’t go on, I listen to this song and feel understood; chillingly beautiful❤
It's 2022 now. This song is floating my heart and my mind with love. I'm not alone. There is you and millions of people going there way down by the riverside all over the world ❤️
For years, I play this on repeat. Whenever my heart hurts I find solace in this song as it eloquently describes my soul. I am alone always and take comfort in my own strength of my life’s experiences and continue to do so. I see too much. Things no one else does. Not even my closest see what I see. I know no one like myself. INFJ traits.
I feel you, I'm always alone at all times 😔 always comforting myself when my heart hurts for such any particular problems. So sad, though, I'm not used to share my internal problems to someone coz I'm hating on it. Sounds weird but that's me. That's why I feel you a lot 😔
I was just introduced to this song yesterday in my American Sign Language course at the college... it was performed brilliantly by my classmate, and the song, they both gave me goosebumps. I could not wait to get home to download the album from iTunes, which I did just now. I am listening to it now, completely soaking in every beautiful note of it...
A few days ago, this song was requested on the Belgian radio station named 'Studio Brussel'. There was a beautiful story behind it; a family that liked to go to some sort of 'vacation park', for children who are very ill. Special care was available all the time. Their little daughter chose that place to die. Despite the undescribable loss and grief, the parents were happy she chose to die at such a beautiful, happy place, where they had such nice memories together. Now everytime I play this song, I think of that girl and her family. Just wanted to share this :-). Good night everyone.
My dad used to play this for me in the car when I was kid. I loved it, but I forgot the name. Years passed and I’ve been searching for it everywhere, now I’ve finally found it. This is a stunning and beautiful song.
Офигенная манера исполнения... такая расскачивающая, плавная и в тоже время загадочная, чарующая....много песен просто супер у исполнительницы, что редкость)
Walk to the boarders on my own, fall in the water just like a stone, chill to the narrow in them bones, why do I go here all alone. This part always gets to me for some reason
I just discovered Agnes Obel and am facscinated by this artist. Her voice is delicate, subtle. The instruments also contribute to this subtlety to form a perfect "whole". I just love it.

I love this! Agnes puts her soul into this! One of my favorite songs ever!!!
Dark and Agnes Obel are perfect for each other Never believe anything else❣️
My amazing taste in music brought me here! And of course her spectacular songs.
Scared of the world, no more friends around, an emptiness although back then I had the need to listen to it just like I do now...
i feel you bro
This song resonates with me so much. From my childhood to all the hardships I’ve been through. When I feel like I can’t go on, I listen to this song and feel understood; chillingly beautiful❤
J'approuve..
It's 2021 and i'm still here, still all alone. Happy new year to me.
Me too, Sending you love and hugs through the ether.
try something more original next year please
@@RRD6 What like, tap dancing?
Happy New year to me too.

"The Rain" brought me here ❤
tinytina the rain AND the mist brought me. I freaked out😂😂😂
Same I so need season 2
Yea mist brought me here too

Yup where 2 people are having sex on a chair in the rain 😂😅
Always. This, and more
It's 2022 now. This song is floating my heart and my mind with love. I'm not alone. There is you and millions of people going there way down by the riverside all over the world ❤️
A very hypnotic song and beautifully done.
I've been looking for this song for years.......damn it....u know how I felt when I found it!!!!!!!!!! ughhhhhhh so great!!! Such a beautiful song!
rotation sur scene
+fany nina huh??
I cannot get enough of Agnes' music... Seriously
If I had the opportunity to listen to a single last song in my life, this would be the one. Thank you Agnes for your art!
Still listening in 2023 will always be one of my faves 🥺😭❤️
"Pain doesnt go away we just learn to live with it..."
💯
Such a perfection of a melody and voice, rythm and tone
I was just introduced to this song yesterday in my American Sign Language course at the college... it was performed brilliantly by my classmate, and the song, they both gave me goosebumps. I could not wait to get home to download the album from iTunes, which I did just now. I am listening to it now, completely soaking in every beautiful note of it...
This song is hauntingly beautiful. I absolutely love it!
❤ Still the most beautiful thing I've ever heard ❤️
Her music reminds me of my childhood favourite movies like The Secret Garden, Black Beauty, A Little Princess, etc..

Missing “Revenge” my youth, I’m still obsessed by the song
@Chloe Hunter SAME
Ghostly, warm and enchanting at the same time. A masterpiece.
Good night everyone.

the most time passes, the more listeners understand how underrated Agnes Obel is
My dad used to play this for me in the car when I was kid.
Beautiful theme, harmony and beauty for a charming voice
lyrics :
Down by the river by the boat
Where everybody goes to be alone
Where you won't see any rising sun
Down to the river we will run
When by the water we drink to the dregs
Look at the stones on the river bed
I can tell from your eyes
You've never been by the riverside
Down by the water the riverbed
Somebody calls you somebody says
Swim with the current and float away
Down by the river everyday
Oh my God I see how everything is torn in the river deep
And I don't know why I go the way
Down by the riverside
When that old river runs pass your eyes
To wash off the dirt on the riverside
Go to the water so very near
The river will be your eyes and ears
I walk to the borders on my own
To fall in the water just like a stone
Chilled to the marrow in them bones
Why do I go here all alone
Oh my God I see how everything is torn in the river deep
And I don't know why I go the way
Down by the riverside
every once in a while you discover a musical pearl :-)
Thanks to Dark Netflix for bringing me to Agnes

We sung this in our school choir 5 years ago. I didn't really understand English back then. Just found it, remembered the sound, now I love it again.
9 Years later I’m still crying in the same spot we used to meet
We never forget the ones we care so much about.
Kinana Alassmi it’s all about the other people in this world .

Thank you 'Revenge' for making me aware of this magnificent song! ❤❤❤
Traurig und traumhaft schön zugleich - Love 2 Agnes 💓
I love this music... this voice... everything... its just so emotional and strangely connects to me so much 🤧
This is the type of sootheing pain i yearn for. I absolutely love Agnes Obel and her music, its fantastic!
I used to be so obsessed with this song, I knew all the lyrics as a little kid when I was 11 I’m now 19😱
Vocals are brilliant as are the lyrics. It has such deep meaning once you understand what's being told.
What is being told?
@@orangegirl247 its metaphorical, see the river as the flow of live. It's about feelings and psychological stuff. If you can't see it, there is no way of explaining.
@@JoJoTheYuMan clearly you don't see it because you can't explain it lol
@@armandpretorius3378 I like to see you try explaining feelings 😀

This song is something that feels like more than a song, if that makes sense. Like a journey or a life story

I don't know how to explain it but this song feels like real music.

Finally! Been searching for this song for weeks!!
For some reason this song made me cry...
You are FAR from the only one.
It's a hauntingly beautiful song.

You got the idea to come here from somebody else aswell. Even If it where the videos recommended for you . :D
+Merle Twinny nahhh I force myself to listen to different music that I think I usually wouldn't like. That's how I got to this song

I died in a dream, and this song started to play, curiously I felt so calm and peaceful even though I was dead.
Mariela Salinas that’s a bit strange, as something similar happened to me, but it was someone else who died.
