Yeah one of the hallmarks of Young Turks and What the Flick?! has always been the free use of profanity, which is really refreshing. I trust this was a glitch in good judgement and we'll be on like Donkey Kong going forward.
Has WTF always bleeped swear words? If it’s new, do you think you could just cut the word or with silence rather than a beep? It’s really distracting. But if you can, please just leave the actual words in. It’s a review on an R-rated movie.
Your volume seems a little low 🤔 I really wanted to see this movie - would’ve on Friday night but due to dump of snow, I went straight home instead. Finally got out on Sunday and I’m glad I did. Not perfect, didn’t LOVE it but happy I saw it on the big screen! Will be nice to rewatch at home on Netflix again.
I couldn't tell if it was set in Florida or Georgia. The Spanish Moss, alligators and architecture looked like Florida, but the reference to "finding the Coast and turning South suggested the East Coast, but it felt more like the Panhandle to me.
That was the point. It was supposed to seem like it was set anywhere on Earth. I was under the impression that it was the Louisiana area, but I don't know the south well.
It was in fact shot in the UK, in Windsor and Norfolk. It's actually quite clever in the way they made it 'look' like a US southern state, whilst having a bit of 'other worldliness' to it.
I looked up this review BECAUSE I saw it twice already, so I'm glad my film instincts are strong. I agree with the review. It's a great film, and I'm sorry I didn't see it earlier.
And the idea of an alien "communicating" by projecting memories takes a bit from Solaris. The opening shots of Solaris (straight down over a very clear pond) seems to be replicated somewhere in the middle too!
I had the same bio problem as Alonso and thought the same thing. I can't leave and risk missing something important. I went when they were in the canoe talking about back stories.
Annihilation is the best movie of the year so far in my book. I can't stop thinking about it. The lighthouse scene is like nothing you've ever seen before and the web it weaves is brilliant. Loved it.
"The lighthouse scene is like nothing you've ever seen before" You mean like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing? Maybe it's just you that hasn't seen it before but cloning is certainly nothing new in Sci-Fi!
Fred Bloggs I’m meaning the scene itself is unique and special. I’ve seen both movies you mentioned and cloning is of course nothing new. But the way in which the scene unfolded was a creative and unique experience that I personally appreciated differently than in other movies. The Thing reveals are shocking yes but there’s something hypnotic, unsettling and beautiful in the lighthouse scene that’s brand new. It’s a slow burn into WTF land. You’re trying to figure out what’s going on right along with Portman’s character. And if you want to be literal about, there actually isn’t a scene like the lighthouse scene. Maybe i should’ve said, you’ve never seen a cloning scene like this before? Ha.
Clones have been on-screen interacting with each other before, see The 6th Day where a partially constructed clone takes over from the still living but dying villain. I really don't see a uniqueness with Annihilation, sure it's nice CGI but it's nothing new for me, more of a meh, seen it before.
The movie is about an alien force that's mutating an ever increasing territory of land primarily in some swamp country with ground zero being a light house. The Shimmer is this territory that looks like a bubble prism, it's radius from the light house grows constantly. People's bodies and mind change while in the Shimmer, there's evidence that prior military expeditions may have turned into plants or plants have grown in the form of people from DNA splicing. The physicist in movie straight up wanders off into the mutated environment and may have turned into part of it; disappears into the ether. Pretty much the environment is a threat and team members trying to reach the light house losing their composure as their bodies change is another. Madness and self destruction ensues.
Christy's description at 1:15 makes it sound a lot like The Tommyknockers by Stephen King. To wit: "While walking in the woods near the small town of Haven, Maine, Roberta (Bobbi) Anderson, a writer of Wild West-themed fiction, stumbles upon a metal object that turns out to be a protrusion of a long-buried alien spacecraft. Once exposed, the spacecraft begins to release an invisible gas into the atmosphere that gradually transforms people into beings similar to the aliens who populated the ship. The transformation, or "becoming," provides them with a limited form of genius which makes them very inventive but does not provide any philosophical or ethical insight into their inventions. The spacecraft also prevents those affected by it from leaving town, provokes psychotic violence in some people, and causes the disappearance of a young boy, David Brown." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tommyknockers
SOME lovecraft???? For Pete's sake the short story 'color out of space' was about a meteor that strikes and colors and mists come out and mutates animals
Why did they play the same song throughout the entire movie tho, that acoustic song, sometimes with lyrics sometimes with not, what the fuck did it mean !
tefaclark Not anymore since it's become a bigger hit in the US, director Alex Garland decided to give it a wider release for example it comes out here in the UK on 12th March.
Poedmé Spoiler: still trying to put together the pieces of the ouroboros infinity tattoo that appears and disappears on various characters arm throughout the film and the idea of the symbol representing the infinite cycle of creation and destruction. also, Screambear's name is Homerton.
This movie wasn’t confusing for me at all until about 3/4ths of the way through then it suddenly stopped making any sense to me. And it’s not on me, it’s because the film stops providing explanations for what is happening. Not sure how I feel about that.
I agree with Matt. When I left this movie, I had mixed feelings. Now I would rate this at 8 - 8.5/10. I had read the book first (liked it). The book while thematically similar to the movie, is NOT portrayed 100% onscreen. However I still like Annihilation in both formats.
The book was a hugely better story for my money but I did enjoy the movie as it's own separate thing that just has similar circumstances & some of the same characters. Saw this with my 10 year old son (had given him a light outline of the book's story earlier) & he LOVED it!
It was very good, but I'm not sure why reviews keep calling it 'mind-boggling.' It was a lot like Stalker, except everything was pretty much explained.
Is this good? I tried to watch the first episode but his mumbling was getting on my nerves. Should I give it another go? Tell me what to do with my loifffeeee
What a movie! Just seen it! Just realised good original movies will only be released in streaming platforms from now on. Cinemas are only for disney movies and will disappear in the near future :(
SPOILER She shouldn't even have mentioned aliens, I didnt know prior to the movie that aliens are involved. I know at the beginning they ask "is it extra terrestrial?" but still you want a sense of surprise when the "alien" shows up.
They literally show something from space crash into the lighthouse at the beginning... if that's a spoiler, it's a spoiler the movie ruins right after the main title.
For crying out loud guys will you turn up the sound in your videos. Getting tired of always having to turn up the volume and remember to turn it down again before moving to the next one. You would think with all the videos you produce daily this wouldnt be such a consistent problem.
How could it be about the randomness of the universe? Is that even a thing? And is the universe really that random? Stuff that's adaptive sticks around that stuff that's not goes by the wayside. Natural selection and all that.
I'm refusing to look at comments and skipped through half the review cause I want to know as little as possible, but can anyone tell me if this is worth seeing in theaters? Cause if so I'll go see it asap or can it wait till it comes out on demand? The trailers for it look great imo and has me hyped to go out & see it but I don't wanna end up being bored and confused throughout the whole movie *EDIT* Just saw their very high scores so I guess that means I should watch it in theaters
Matt is wrong, if it were males playing the same roles, they would have not been Predator/macho guys - they would've been scientists. The only role that may have had a tough-like characterization would've been the paramedic, just as she was the toughest one out of this group of females.
Indeed like the male scientists in Prometheus they would have been male bumbling idiots instead of female bumbling idiots, not some tough macho guys. They had to be bumbling idiots to make illogical plot decisions and get killed off. It's lazy writing and direction.
Oh and thank you for bleeping out inappropriate language. I despise how so many of my favorite shows, featuring intellectual conversation I cannot share with my mother without blushing,
This movie was like a PsyFy channel flick. Cool idea without enough focus on creating characters or events that you can care about to make it at all edifying. No reason for there to be any CGI whatsoever in this movie. No reason to flash back to the affair stuff. This movie was a bummer.
No wish to see this again. I'm quite happy for that to be my fault, but it left me cold. Maybe because it only came out on Netflix over here? But this high concept sci fi stuff usually leaves me cold.
Original? Come on! Guys! It’s right there in front of you: this is a remake of Tarkovsky’s 1979 film Stalker. Same premise with some shiny new effects.
Movie s*u*cks (personal opinion); reviewers try to make some sense of it by finding beauty in trivial things like graphics (f*u*cked up flora and fauna) and they end up in scoring with numbers like 8.7 and 9.0 (should this give a professional appearance to the fact that they don’t know what are they talking about? the same people scored the 'War for the planet of the apes' with 9.5 and 7.5, wtf?!?). Is there a 100 question scale behind it (0.1 per positive answer) or it's just a personal feeling that goes below 5.0 if it's a really crappy movie? Couple of points that felt out of the concept for this particular film: 1. Biology professor cannot watch the "tutorial/educational/informative" video left by the predecessors because of the emotional relationship?!? (scene where the guy's intestines are replaced with a snake/overgrown tapeworm like thingy) 2. Physicist that that doesn't want to discover why is she turning into a plant? 3. They are on a fucking boat (big one) and they are not heading to the lighthouse first? 4. Finally, with everything being so weird, nobody stopped to check if they are even on the planet Earth? Simple pendulum test would estimate the gravitational acceleration of the "place" where they are at (9.81m/s2 average for the planet Earth; there are ways to define 1kg needed for the experiment given that they have a length reference; they did have fucking physicist and a geomorph...whatever "ist" on the team at the beginning) So, either this movie is talking about the decadent scientific community of our time or it is just not a proper science fiction movie; decide for yourself. Cheers!
Great film, Josie and glasses were pretty bad actors but overall great storytelling and performance from portman. Those last 15 minutes are some of the best sci-fi I’ve seen in awhile, 8-10
Love sci-fi. But this movie bored me to sleep. By the way, what's wrong with the word "shit"? Nothing wrong with shit. As a matter of fact I just had one about an hour ago and it didn't bleep.
For those that have seen it, what's the significance of them all being women? It must be to convey some kind of meaning, it's clearly deliberate, are men not able to enter the shimmer or something? I mean, they're all scientists and they're armed, if you're looking for armed scientists they're probably going to be men, let's be honest. If they want a different dynamic that's fine but there has to be an in universe explanation, even if it's just one line.
I don't think there is a big meaning, but in answer to your question previously they've sent in men (military) and they haven't come back (apart from Isaac). This time they're sending in scientists (and a paramedic), and they just happen to be women. Yes they're armed (and one of them is an ex-soldier) but that's just down to self-protection. I kind of like the fact they didn't really make a deal about it either way tbh.
Why are you censoring Christy? Honestly this is the first time I've ever heard the BLeEP. Not to be nit-picky but ... I was kinda thrown off! Is this a new format? I sure hope not guys. :-7
Who cares about swear words!! It’s so immature to dwell on that with this many comments when the movie is so good. Get over yourselves and start practicing the maturity that you are all preaching and whining about on this channel.
Just a comment to all the commentators below who are crying CENSORSHIP. Nobody is censoring these three people on the video: they can say whatever they want. However, if they want to use youtube as their channel to transmit that, AND get money from those videos, they need to follow youtube's rules. If they want to stick to their guns completely, open a website and broadcast from there. That way they won't have any advertisers? So it's a MONEY problem, not a CENSORSHIP problem (I must admit A Dose of Buckley has explained this much better. Go watch his videos on this topic. This one is one of his last ruclips.net/video/Pc822jxCem0/видео.html on this topic)
I found this neither original nor interesting and very badly written and directed, even poor cgi. I don't get the whole "can't miss a second" thing Alonso is on about. I mean If you cut the whole movie out from the crodcodile to the last hugging scene, what have you actually missed ? Crocodile with shark teeth about 20min in = Theory : "An alien organism is mutating, multiplying and combining all other living cells around it".... One hour of walking through the jungle later = Theory confirmed. wow.
is there a reason for the bleeps? I always felt your audience was of the appropriate age to hear the word “shit”.
If they didn't bleep out cursing, the video would get demonetized by youtube.
Well that's fucking terrible.
Jon Lee Oh crap, that explains it.
Really? Is there an official story on this censorship?
That was weird.
Why is swearing now being bleeped?
They're trying not to get demonetized.
That's some bullshit
Agreed. Muthafucking Bullshit.
RUclips said so!
Yeah one of the hallmarks of Young Turks and What the Flick?! has always been the free use of profanity, which is really refreshing. I trust this was a glitch in good judgement and we'll be on like Donkey Kong going forward.
What's with the censored bleeps?
RUclips now won't monetize videos that isn't family friendly.
Bleeps? Really? Please, no.
It's youtube, why are we censoring language?
pvtpain66k So RUclips don't demonize the video.
pvtpain66k they’ll lose money for cursing
@@RealShaktimaan Was waiting for someone to butcher the word _demonetize_ (-‸ლ)

its definitely new. the upload minutes before this is unbleeped (as all their prev reviews have been). a weird, unwanted change.
most likely for the video not to get demonetized

Did you bleep Christy? What the Flick?!
Logansolo Howlett-Jones do you mean What The F**k
I wish Jennifer Jason Leigh had been the lead not Natalie. She was most interesting character because she was crazy.
Why is this audio so low? Why are swears bleep? How annoying.
Turn the volume up then...geez!ヽ(`Д´)ノ
There is some STALKER as well. The Shimmer: The Zone.
And the idea of an alien "communicating" by projecting memories takes a bit from Solaris. The opening shots of Solaris (straight down over a very clear pond) seems to be replicated somewhere in the middle too!
That's what kept coming to my mind as well, "I wish I was watching Stalker right now, because it's this movie but exponentially better."
to be fair, stalker is one of the best movies ever made. annihilation was still pretty good sci-fi.
A lot of movies that have been coming out lately have been really good. Im starting to really enjoy watch new movies again.
I had the same bio problem as Alonso and thought the same thing. I can't leave and risk missing something important. I went when they were in the canoe talking about back stories.
I want to see it again with a buzz on.
I was drinking coffee the whole time I had to pee

Fred Bloggs Subjective.
Yes all comments on a film are subjective, I don't see your point?
This is a pretty cool film. Deserved far better than just a netflix release. I can't wait to see what Alex Garland does next
The hell are you on about? It had a theatrical release!┌(;`~,)┐
I don't like Christy to be in the middle...This upsets me, never again!! Oh and Evolution was NOT terrible, it was exactly what it was supposed to be.
That was a little much, no?
tonedog77 wtf dude
tonedog77 You grossed out Alonso.
Annihilation is to Ex Machina as Upstream Colour is to Primer
uglydog44 hey I've seen this somewhere else...
PrettyMuchIt said the same thing on Twitter. Real original..
and that's pretty much it
uglydog44 nah Carruths and Garland are both different

Not being released here in Australia so I have to wait for the netflix release 😢😢
When they were like "See this on the biggest screen you can"... I was like "I only have a 40" TV at home, because WE'RE NOT GETTING A CINEMA RELEASE!"

One more Day my friend one more day..
I'm not on RUclips to see censored movie reviews.
Here we go again with the insecurity that manifests in making Christy sit in a different seat.
As always, great review. I had a different approach to the ending-
Lovecraft, John Carpenter, and Kronenberg: Weird. *Very* Weird, and sometimes graphically violent.
You missed the part were its only coming out in the US and China, so I can only see it on Netflix
tefaclark Not anymore since it's become a bigger hit in the US, director Alex Garland decided to give it a wider release for example it comes out here in the UK on 12th March.

Please do the review of Netflix original series Altered carbon

Damn turn the volume up

Why is tbe volume so low?
Why did they censor the language? They've used heavy language on this show many times before.
I believe it's so RUclips doesn't demonetize the video.

No more bleeps!. This ain't Jerry Springer.

awesome review! can't wait to see
Do you really have to censor adult language on a video about a rated R film?... I'd understand if this were a peter rabbit review, but it's not.
Please don't use the bleep tone... I know you have to do it but just use silence instead of a weird tone.
Fix your audio I shouldn't have to turn my PC speakers to 100 to hear your video.
Great film, Josie and glasses were pretty bad actors but overall great storytelling and performance from portman. Those last 15 minutes are some of the best sci-fi I’ve seen in awhile, 8-10
I hate that the swearing is bleeped, if swearing is now bleeped stop swearing.
Finally! I've been waiting for this review! I love it too!
Yep, everyone in the comments noticed the bleep when christy said shit.....
But not when Alonso said it unbleeped at the beginning. I found the unpleasantness of the tone itself far more offensive than any words they've used.

Fucking RUclips making everyone fucking bleep their fucking videos.
Why are you censoring Christy? Honestly this is the first time I've ever heard the BLeEP. Not to be nit-picky but ... I was kinda thrown off! Is this a new format? I sure hope not guys. :-7
Omar Magana Due to new RUclips rules they've had to bleep to keep advertising friendly.
Who cares about swear words!! It’s so immature to dwell on that with this many comments when the movie is so good. Get over yourselves and start practicing the maturity that you are all preaching and whining about on this channel.
This is a really bad version of Tarkovsky’s Stalker
You are all reaching, professors
I found this neither original nor interesting and very badly written and directed, even poor cgi. I don't get the whole "can't miss a second" thing Alonso is on about. I mean If you cut the whole movie out from the crodcodile to the last hugging scene, what have you actually missed ? Crocodile with shark teeth about 20min in = Theory : "An alien organism is mutating, multiplying and combining all other living cells around it".... One hour of walking through the jungle later = Theory confirmed. wow.
LOVE this movie. That bear alone....
LV RB Scariest thing I've seen in a while
What's with the fucking beeps?
I wish they went into the water..
The last third of the movie got weird as fuck lmao
