I don't think this set was very good only two cards in the whole set are good and I bought a couple box boosters and didn't pull anything worth anything I kept pulling 50 cent cards $1 cards and $3 cards oh and one $10 card but thats it I don't know if it was wizards quality control or just luck was involved
Ixalan''s last run was my first foray back into magic since the mid 90's and it's nostalgia packed and full of some of my fave tribes decks and combinations...glad this set isn't a disappointment either!
I hate Miirym but I have to point out: If played after Miirym, Roaming Throne won't up the number of copies of all other dragons to two. The throne itself gets copied twice so you end up with three thrones, meaning you get four copies of every further dragon.
I've hated dragon tribal since I started playing MTG with friends' decks and the tribe getting to have every single mechanic that's ever existed in the game, along with 30 new commanders every set certainly doesn't help.@@PizzaShoes
For those looking for more redundancy in their "Lands-Enter-Untapped" suite, why not try Tiller Engine? It's very similar to Amulet of Vigor, with some pros and cons.
It's an absolute banger! I use it in my Obuun deck. It always feels good to have Exploration, Tiller Engine, Myriad Landscape and Crucible of Worlds on the board
One card I never see mentioned is Bloodletter of Aclazotz! Absolutely awesome staple for life drain focused black decks (So most of them lol) especially strong with Devotion lovers like Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Super awesome card I can't wait to get my hands on!
This is one of the first sets in a very long time I've actually bothered to look the story up for, turns out some of the new commander cards actually have pretty great lore, especially the gods. Love ya Ixalan, goated plane
Not just in voltron decks, nearly any decks that run some sacrifice strategy or just treasures, and since treasures have become very prominent in recent years, this thing triggers all the time
Notably with Thousand Moons Smithy, if you use itself to activate the second ability it will transform tapped since it doesn't say something like "exile, then return transformed". Almost learned that the hard way during prerelease weekend. Luckily I realized before I did it
A big sleeper hit in limited was Zoyowa's Justice. Not strictly as good as chaos warp, but better than wild magic surge and, in a pinch, can be used to recoup value off something you own that's doomed by removal
Another good way to play Thousand Moon Smithy is with Rhys the Redeemed, and token doubler effects. Mondrak, Doubling season, Parallel Lives will help generate much more Gnome constructs than before, and since they build off of one another, can become obscenely huge, QUICK.
Also for roaming throne in miiryn decks. Since roaming throne will enter the battlefield as a dragon, if your miirym is on the battlefield, it will see the roaming throne and make a copy of it, but because the roaming throne is on the battlefield, it will trigger another time and make two copies of it instead. Essentially quadrupling all of your miirym triggers after that. Its a very strong card
Ixalan was the first magic set I really truly got into the game. And it's come full circle with my orazov vampires in standard now with my Edgar markov in Commander. I love each and every card from this set Vampires, pirates, merfolk, DINOSAURS!!!! Ixalan is to me like ravnica is to you
I did a prerelease event and got Spelunking and Dauntless Dismantler. Dauntless was a great card to have in my White/green/black 40 card. I lost badly to Bonehoard. One of my close friends got a copy of Roaming Throne. Good times.
Tiller Engine and Stone-Seeder Hierophant also untap lands but I will certainly be picking up Spelunking for consistency in my lands deck and gates deck.
Lol I run Kyodai mazes end. I run shit like conduit of worlds and strip mine with exploration. I love blowing up a lot of lands in one turn. Anything that untaps lands I’ll have to look into. Also. I’m sure you know because you said you have a gate deck but check out gond gate! Let’s all your other gates come in untapped. I use navigation orb or another way to fetch a land and always grab gond gate first. Also for land decks. Kura the boundless sky from Neo kamigawa has a killer death effect that lets you grab 3 lands out your deck.
Between the main set and the Blood Rites precon, I'm getting so many new toys for my Alesha vampires deck, I can't even pick one that I'm most excited about
I appreciate you sharing your top 5 cards in the new Ixalan set. I like Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant in a Dinosaur deck, Clavileno, First of the Blessed in a Vampire / Demon deck, and Hakbal of the Serging Soul in a Merfolk deck. Thank you for the video Professor.
absolutely ecstatic to have pulled Bonehoard Dracosaur and Roaming Throne in the prerelease packs, knew I was going to put them in the Pantlaza deck I picked up too, just need to work out what to cut to get them in there... along with all the Jurassic Park cards... and other powerful dinosaurs... oh no, I've got my work cut out for me
Key thing about Roaming Throne is that you don't even need to be a kindred deck to really get use out of it. There are a number of commanders that don't have access to doubling effects, whether it be due to how their triggered ability works, or not being in the right colors. Ever wanted to draw 6 cards for 6 life off of Tymna in one combat step? How about doubling BOTH of Prosper's triggers? Braids, Conjurer Adept putting 2 permanents into play for even more chaotic fun? These are just 3 examples, but there's bound to be plenty more.
Brass's Tunnel Grinder I feel is a bit overlooked. I like the card advantage it can generate with putting cards you can get later in the graveyard, to drawing cards equal to the number you pitch +1. Then when it flips, getting to discover X in the late game really helps churn out additional value.
I actually got a box out of curiosity for what I would get and while I only got 3 of these, the dracosaur, spelunking and the dismantler, I got lucky enough to get a Mana Crypt, Chimil the inner sun and a Cavern of Souls, they legit sent me their best box
Great list! I was lucky enough to open two Roaming Thrones in my pre-release kit :) Also wanted to note, the Dauntless Dismantler has another huge upside: because it doesn't stipulate that x can't be 0 it can get rid of all artifact tokens on the board (treasure, map, food, blood) with a single white mana! This also means it can shut down those beefy gnome soldier artifact creature tokens created by the Thousand Moons Smithy!
Thousand Moons Smithy is going to be GREAT in my Azorius Soldiers deck with Harbin at the helm. Basically, it's already a token soldiers deck anyway so I'm sorry, I get HUGE token soldiers that give me value for already going with a super wide strategy and then Harbin secures the deal by giving all my creatures flying and +1/1 whenever I attack with 5 or more soldiers? Deal. Signed in BLOOD. Seriously I couldn't ask for a better card in White. Plus then Soldiers also got Charismatic Conqueror. Like ok sure, he's a Vampire so he's definitely going in a lot of Vampire decks. But for my deck which is soldier tokens and pillowfort focused it's also perfect...I theoretically either get a 1/1 vampire token with lifelink OR my opponent has to tap their scary creatures or artifacts as they ETB. Both options are ok with me for only 2 mana cost.
You got me sold on two of those! Spelunking will perform great my more budget mana bases and will go completely bonkers in Aesi, where I play a ton of tutors with lands entering tapped just for the triggers, including the big boys reshape the earth and boundless realms. And Thousand moon smithy should be a slam dunk in Urza Chief Artificer!
I wish Locus of Enlightment didn't have the "once per turn" clause. Yes, it probably goes infinite with any number of things (e.g. mana ability + untap ability) but with all the effort it takes to flip the darn thing you should be able to go infinite.
Normally when I watch these, none of the singles seem to catch my interest, but Roaming Throne, the Soldier token spam, and the Dracosaur are clearly things I wanna get my hands on.
Unless I'm mistaken, ward is also a triggered ability. While the Roaming throne doesn't double its own ward, in gives extra protection to Myriim (Or other tribal cards with ward) too.
Regarding Craft- they don't have to be permanent cards if they're in the graveyard! It just needs to meet the quality it asks for. So for Enigma Jewel, if there were instants/sorceries with activated abilities, you COULD exile, say, Repeating Barrage. And that's because Enigma Jewel asks for specifically AA
Look forward to Eaten By Piranhas as a new blue removal spell Motlen Collapse as an upgraded dreadbore Unstable Glyphbridge as a combination Boardwipe and Stax
Dauntless Dismantler is great because while the (XX)W cost seems high, you can knock every treasure off the board for 1 or all the OP 1 mana artifacts for 3. It gets rid of Esper Sentinel without triggering it and everyones sol ring at the same time. Theres also some potential here with Liquimetal Coating. The Enigma Jewel seems like an auto include in every Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy deck ever.
One of my favorite cards I pulled was the Hulking Raptor. A 2 generic, 2 green cost 5/3 creature with ward 2 and gives 2 green on your pre-combat main phase.
As someone who loves utility token strategies like the new hobbit deck, prosper, strefan, etc. and using those tokens to let marionette master pop off, Tarrian's Soulcleaver has me so excited. I need like 10 copies now.
the original ixalan set is what got me deep into mtg. my first commander deck was with zacama primal calamity that i got out of a booster from a planswalker deck. seeing it re turn with such glory really makes me a happy man!. besides the cool setting of ixalan and the reflection of one of my faviotite times in human earth. withe cool pritates and wooden sailboots and one of the last times that people used swords and guns didnt rule every form of combat, what again looks way cooler in movies and commicbooks than it would be in real life. what was my point again? oh ya! i just love ixalan and they done this favorite plane of mine is just great! YARRRR MATY, for the queen, Growl, and of course blub blub!
Yeah I made the mistake of buying a box because I thought there would be good play on the descend mechanic and thought cards would be just interesting levels of fire with the art and mechanics. Instead, I got almost two of each of the dual lands, three copies of "the grim throne," and my box topper was a worn powerstone. I will never buy another box again. If i didn't see a surprise list Meathook Massacre, I would have not made even 25% of the money I spent on the box. It would have been 200% better to just put the $100 some odd dollars into singles. I can't even engage in trades...
@TolarianCommunityCollege I really would love to see the professor make a video on Sorcery: Contested Realm. As someone who wished I could have been there for the beginning of magic, this game really gives me that feeling and I think is something special. It isn't without flaws, but I would love to see it get a boost and an unbiased review of sorts by the most trusted RUclipsr when it comes to TCGs. ❤
Roaming Throne has absolutely gone into my vampires deck, alongisde Vito's Inquisitor. My deck produces a lot of Blood tokens, but I just never seem to use them. Vito's Inquisitor lets me spend a Black mana to sac a land and give it not just a +1/+1 counter but ALSO menace until end of turn; saccing Blood tokens also triggers a few of my other cards, so it makes it cheaper to spend Blood, and Roaming Throne would then double those other triggers.
It feels like "make a token" is starting to become a game design crutch in a lot of cases. Just add instant value engine. In any case, a great suite of cards! I certainly look forward to spelunking in the near future.
I'll fill out my ixalan commander/historic pool in singles. Gotta drop the money on a minimum of bundle+SetBoosterBox+handful/full box of collector boosters from my LGS. Even though as a non-WPN "_not real store_" they get short supplied all the time. So by Monday hopefully if I clean out his stock, at least local people had a chance to load up all weekend. _Standard legal main sets only, masters and etc. sets kinda break my bank to buy at the same rates_
So, the "Craft" ability on Enigma Jewel is weird. It doesn't have to be permanents that are exiled. It says "nonlands", not "nonland permanents". You can exile Instants and Sorceries with from your graveyard. The backside ability won't benefit from doing so, but it might be something you do in a pinch if you want to get to the backside quicker.
What instants and sorceries have activated abilities on them? I think WOTC just ran out of room to put "permanent" in the reminder text of Enigma Jewel's craft cost. Probably means too much word bloat WOTC!
You don't even have to be in a strictly creature deck to like the Throune, though. Even if it just boosts your commander's triggered ability the deck relies on, it's pretty good. Like drawing twice with Kadena, or effectively doubling the token's creation with Zaxara.
I always buy 1 box from each standard set... I love cracking packs... my son opened a foil Cavern!!! On top of the non foil I opened at my prerelease!!
I might put Dauntless Dismantler in my Stenn commander deck, as being able to get a swath of my own artifacts into the graveyard would be great for effects like Mirrodin Besieged, as I usually end up with a late game board state where I don't have many artifacts in graveyard, but have a swath of 2 or 3 cost mana rocks that generate far more mana for me than I need that would be better off in grave.
Dauntless Dismantler also has the unmentioned benefit of destroying all treasures, artifact lands and powerstones if actiivated for just one white mana.
My set booster box had all of these! Plus, a Cavern of Souls borderless foil! 😉 always worth watching to get the scoop. Too bad I didn't before the box...but hey I pulled them all, so I'm actually satisfied both fronts!
I Sealed drafted and pulled the new ghalta. Ojer Taq in the showcase version Foil! The Blood letter of aclazotz. (20,50,20 for a total of 90$)(this is including the cards i pulled after for winning 3-1 with three color. i was the only one to win 3-1.) Amazing set. draft for fun.but if you want certain cards buy those.
it is decently profitable. thats the point im trying to make. dont draft looking for cards or looking for proft. but if you are do it for fun. and focus on profit secondary. A special thing our shop was doing was giving us a masters 30 card.(anniversary.) and i chose a path of ancestry so thats fun
With the explosion of artifact token generation, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Sunshot Militia as one of the overlooked commons of the set. It gives me Impact Tremor vibes.
Hell yes, I was hoping the Thousand Moons Smithy would be on here... I put it idly in my GW ArtiCat deck and... dear lord every time it has flipped it has slowly just advantaged me to victory... I love it So much =D
Doesn't Miirym make 2 copies of roaming throne as it enters as a dragon? 1 from Miirym and 1 from the additional trigger from roaming throne itself? Then you could make 4 extra copies per dragon
@@milcal970 ha ha, definitely. Learning how to use the advanced search functions on scryfall will be your friend. And most commander players won't mind proxy cards, so don't be afraid to print out a card instead of dropping $5+ on an idea you're not even sure will work.

I don’t know why, but this is the most excited I’ve been for a magic set in ages! It feels good to be back in Ixalan.
the set is fun and contains a lot of interesting and funny cards
i want ikoria to come back with more mutate mechanics
The limited environment has been a TON of fun. Cant believe there is a legit way to deal 1k damage to someone in a limited format 😂

True, but that does assume Miirym is out at the time. So profs statement is correct, he's just not assuming the best case scenario.
wouldn't it be more as the thrones would trigger each other too, being as it, itself has a triggered ability?
@@ryancarey3782 The throne's ability is a replacement ability, not a triggered ability

Tiller Engine is great in my Galadriel of Lothlorien deck. Of course I also slammed Spelunking in there after pulling at Prerelease
The main pro being it’s ten percent of the price, but it’s also a sneaky bonus with bounceland Kodama to tap down everyone else.
My favorite thing about this set is new cats!! The two G/W cats, Kutzil and Okinnec are perfect for stopping your opponents and gain ton of counters
SAME! These two are fitting right into my Ahrabo and Nazahn decks.
I usually play a Phabine deck, I didn't know Okinec existed until yesterday but I've already got him slotted into my deck now.
Ixalan seems so fun and fresh to return to. I'm liking it more than Eldraine even. But that could also be because DINOSAURS!
Dinosaur tribal is awesome

Roaming Throne has absolutely gone into my vampires deck, alongisde Vito's Inquisitor. My deck produces a lot of Blood tokens, but I just never seem to use them. Vito's Inquisitor lets me spend a Black mana to sac a land and give it not just a +1/+1 counter but ALSO menace until end of turn; saccing Blood tokens also triggers a few of my other cards, so it makes it cheaper to spend Blood, and Roaming Throne would then double those other triggers.
1:25 "Let's jump right in, butt first!"
It feels like "make a token" is starting to become a game design crutch in a lot of cases. Just add instant value engine. In any case, a great suite of cards! I certainly look forward to spelunking in the near future.
Was expecting to see Charismatic Conqueror. That card is an auto-include in my Winota and Raffine deck
_Standard legal main sets only, masters and etc. sets kinda break my bank to buy at the same rates_
the amount of text on a 1 drop blue card! WTF 🤣
Roaming Throne looks sweet with the new Indoraptor legend and a bunch of dinos with enrage.
That whatnot ad had flip in it. Good guy. Shout out to flip and James
Repeating barrage would be an sorcery with an activated ability
I bought taverns of ixalon. I won the lottery and got mana crypt and cavern of souls. Not to mention some neat edh cards
Its the Metas that got small!
Love the Sunset Boulevard reference Prof
I pulled Bonehoard Dracosaur, Smithy and Roaming throne. Pretty excited. Dracosaur going into Miirym deck, Throne and Smithy is in my Magnus deck.
Final two cards ( holds up three finger). You are so entertaining!
I'm exited for more Skeleton support, for my in-progress all-skeleton deck.
You don't even have to be in a strictly creature deck to like the Throune, though. Even if it just boosts your commander's triggered ability the deck relies on, it's pretty good. Like drawing twice with Kadena, or effectively doubling the token's creation with Zaxara.
No joke kinda love the suit on this one & would buy a similar one if I saw it. It has like a cool refined carnival barker vibe.
Dauntless Dismantler also has the unmentioned benefit of destroying all treasures, artifact lands and powerstones if actiivated for just one white mana.
hahaha great reference to sunset boulevard with merfolks Prof! 10/10
Dauntless dismantler seems like a very efficient way to eliminate all the Treasure, Food, Clue, Map, Incubator, Phyrexian (etc) tokens in one swoop.
My set booster box had all of these! Plus, a Cavern of Souls borderless foil! 😉 always worth watching to get the scoop. Too bad I didn't before the box...but hey I pulled them all, so I'm actually satisfied both fronts!
Today's suit is in my top 10 of Prof's
Dauntless Dismantler looks pretty intimidating against Map/Food/Clue/Treasure decks...
HEY, I WAS PLAYING MERFOLK, DON'T CALL ME OUT
I Sealed drafted and pulled the new ghalta.
I'm really exited for Greedy Freebooter, even though he is just a little common guy for my Balrog Treasure Hunt Deck :)
With the explosion of artifact token generation, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Sunshot Militia as one of the overlooked commons of the set. It gives me Impact Tremor vibes.
8:36 "ugh more text" - my feelings about this set in a nutshell
This set rocks so much this is why I love card games its such a good feeling amazing mechanics and great flavor
Man, prof is the best. Always such good content.
I would love to see a merfolk Commander deck update for caverns of ixalan
What a great set for my final magic set! (financially, I cant keep spending so much money!)
Professor. The thumbnail. The thumbnail, Professor. Ixlaan, Professor. Ixlaan.
Brian.
Ixlaan.
In the 99, I'm excited for Get Lost, Aclazotz and Squirming Emergence
Hell yes, I was hoping the Thousand Moons Smithy would be on here... I put it idly in my GW ArtiCat deck and... dear lord every time it has flipped it has slowly just advantaged me to victory... I love it So much =D
Am i the only one noticing the misspelled Ixalan (Ixlaan) in the thumbnail ?
Dude I was scrollllling to find this comment lmao
Doesn't Miirym make 2 copies of roaming throne as it enters as a dragon? 1 from Miirym and 1 from the additional trigger from roaming throne itself? Then you could make 4 extra copies per dragon
Spelunking might end up as the highest impact card from this set.
omg, I'm new to magic, and in the 23 booster set that I've open yet, I have all of the card presented here haha
Sounds like a good excuse to build a commander deck
@@Fopenplop it is so hard to start, there is so much card with each so many mechanic and synergies, i will build one, but it will take a long while
@@milcal970 ha ha, definitely. Learning how to use the advanced search functions on scryfall will be your friend. And most commander players won't mind proxy cards, so don't be afraid to print out a card instead of dropping $5+ on an idea you're not even sure will work.
after having not looked at a new magic card in like ten years, i can’t believe that any of these commons are commons.
Charismatic conqueror should be on this list. That card is gonna be crazy
I was 420 for likes. Love your videos professor and love the way you speak. It really informative and that is how I talked to my associates when I was a manager.
