Got recommended this after the JRB Treasure of the Ocean Cave 0.5xA. Interesting to see submitted ideas vs what was done to solve the issue. Very cool.
Ok, so basically we are left with almost no options. We know that there's no way to gain additional height, as we know that from trying to get out of the cage in SSL. The only way we could do this is A: discover a new glitch that allows us to clone using a shell or gain height randomly, or B: have Nintendo re-release super Mario 64 everywhere with all the Japanese glitches and make some of the damn stars spawn lower to the damn ground. Or just change the Goombas in JRB to scuttlebugs.

I honestly think the ABC challenge would be worse without this seemingly easy star being so out of reach. Taunting us. Torturing us. Some other stars just have so many obstacles, but this... we will break this. We'll find something
You should make one of these videos right after you discover a new way of getting a star. Then you can throw everyone for a loop by having one of the suggestions actually work.
I would never do that. If I try something that works, then I don't have to make a video showing all the failed suggestions. Instead, I'd just make a video showing the thing that did work and call it a day. Throughout ABC history, many difficulties have been solved by some technique, at which point there was no more point of focusing on all the other techniques that didn't work
In fact, I deliberately postpone making videos of this type, because if just one idea succeeds, then I don't have to make the video at all. So it's like I'm holding out hoping that something works. But eventually when I give up, I'll document all the ideas so that other people can take a look at my progress so far and future-me can easily return to the video to see if I missed anything if new info/techniques come about
This is the remaining A press that fascinates me the most. There's so many ways that can almost solve it that I feel like we're just one small mechanical discovery away from breaking one of them open. The fact the different near-solutions are all so different is also really interesting, because that small mechanical discovery could be almost anything and it might relate to one of them. I just know we will see this one solved one day and I can't wait to see what does it!

What if you generated backwards speed on a slippery slope but used AB kicks instead of C^ to preserve speed, and then used that speed and jumped off the pillar?
Well, maybe we _could_ shave off half an A press... Random Question: Could you do a documentation on the Mario behind the Mirror? What interactions does He have, what happens if he got damaged, etc, etc.
I've seen it before, including hacking to summon it outside the mirror. It doesn't have any collisions, just takes all its cues from Mario. Also pretty sure it doesn't move if outside the mirror room (there might be an object in there to indicate the center?), but it will walk into the non-mirror side if Mario noclips into the mirror
I had a dream where I met Pannen irl and we managed to get this star 0x. Basically, we discovered it’s possible, under certain circounstrances to walljump by pressing B, which allowed us to collect the star.
could you HSWS on the ship? you're said that most slopes you can frame walk on dont work with the c^trick, but you also said there are some exceptions...
I was /just/ about to ask why you couldn't use the trajectory of collecting the 100 coin star like in your TF run, but then I remembered not only can you not collect 2 stars at once, but you can't clone anything in JRB, including sufficient coins to be close enough to the star God, it's so fun learning all this stuff about the game from you
For the record, I'm avidly watching this channel every day for updates, because though I am nowhere near as well versed in this game as you, I am as eager to see those A presses disappear. Please keep at it! Videos like this are always fascinating, seeing you explore a theory.
It's really nice to see more content lately. (with the other video posted the other day) I really love your videos and I've been watching them a lot lately.
It’s crazy to think that this A press out of all the ones that have been cut with crazy creative strategies still stands despite being so simple on the surface. Just a couple more units of height is all it would take
For #6, you say there are no slippery surfaces in JRB. However, did you fully check the floating ship? Due to the oscillations, the main walls become slopes which are too steep to walk on, and so you might get an HSW out of them.
He made a video on traveling up the ship by frame-walking. On a separate video, he said that if a slope can be frame-walked on, then the slope is non-slippery and therefore you wouldn’t be able to execute HSWS.
This is probably something that was checked already but. Wouldn't it be possible to perform the hat in hand glitch to remotely throw the koopa shell mid-jump to the star or to give a boost using the koopa shell geometry ?
Okay, so I'm just gonna throw a few ideas out here, and I apologize if a few of them seem ridiculous. I don't know if any of them will work, but I feel like they're worth mentioning. I really like Suggestion 6 in this video, and these ideas are for that suggestion: 1) Is there anything you can do with the box that slides back and forth on the ship's surface? Is there a way you can get that box to clip you into an area where you can build up speed? 2) Can the ship ITSELF be used in any way to build up speed? I don't know if it qualifies as a slippery surface, but can its slopes allow you to get into areas where you can build speed? 3) Since the entire cave section is beneath a ceiling, is there any sort of way to enter a "pedro spot?" As in, is there a way that you can gain enough height so that you can get stuck in an area where Mario technically gets stuck in the ceiling? And from there, would you be able to build enough speed? Perhaps all of these ideas are not doable, but I just wanted to suggest them anyway. If I knew how to create .m64 files, I'd try 'em myself, but for the time being, I was just wondering if you'd be willing to test any of these. Thank you for your time, koek (keok), and I wish you luck with your A-button challenge!
(1) There is not any known way to exploit it. Even if it formed a pedro spot somehow, it moves, and so we couldn't stay in said pedro spot for more than a second. (2) The ship is not slippery. If the ship formed a pedro spot, it wouldn't help, since it moves. (3) A pedro spot requires a floor and ceiling in close proximity. This does not happen in the cave.
There wouldn't be an "easy" way to for Mario to reach vertical PUs, would there? And if there was some way, would it be possible to get the star that way?
I think the only known way to reach vertical PUs so far is to manipulate Fly Guy’s size and jump on it, but the only thing you can do after that is twirl down into an OoB zone and crash the game because there’s no floor.
Game Buster The idea would be to use vertical PU travel to get back to the star on the main map, but yeah, unless we take hyper speed flying far beyond its current capabilities, it’s not happening (let alone in JRB and without A presses). I forgot Fly Guy’s size manipulation could only cause it to shrink. I guess pannenkoek has tested this through, but maybe another timing could interrupt its animation while it’s larger than its original size?
(1) Simultaneously moving onto land and having its timer run out (2) Simultaneously moving onto land, throwing the shell, and having its timer run out (3) Grabbing the shell the moment it appears after throwing it (4) Throwing the shell right when dropping into water I've tried all of these things, and they've all failed
Using the HOLP, could you place an object in the out-of-bounds shown at 6:23 and interact with it when you clip through the wall? For example, could you place a (cloned?) Goomba there and collide with it so the knockback kills your H speed?
Hey pannen, someone mentioned last video if there was a way to keep the demo from ending at the designated time, and it got me thinking a little. What if there is text on screen from reading a sign or talking to a bomb buddy as the demo ends, or if you're in a cannon? In regular gameplay, it's impossible to exit the game or die with one of the above parameters in effect, so I'm curious how the game would respond.
Super late reply, but in Simpleflips’ Green Demon challenge he dies in all kinds of places, including in cannons and with text. All that happens is as soon as he lands or closes the text he dies and you can’t collect stars with 0 HP. I don’t know if the demo would cause something different but death won’t effect those to situations.
It's almost as if Nintendo knew that people would want to collect stars in unconventional ways and designed the level specifically to make it impossible.
I get the feeling that if a way to kill the mystery goomba from BitS is ever found, a similar technique could be used to reach the star as per suggestion #8. So that's two birds, we just need to find the stone.
What if you somehow clone a goomba with hat in hand glitch, then clone its spawner? We'd need to find a way to make 2 clones though and the second one has to be made while not leaving the spawners radius. Or just spend another 5 years finding ACE to lower the star slightly lol
So, in short, if we can figure out how to do any of the following things 0x, we can save an A press: -DR 24 units higher somehow -Clone objects using the shell -Build up 90+ speed in the cavern somehow -Get to the 500 h speed mark anywhere -Activate VCS under the star -Somehow get to a high enough vantage point where a slide kick can reach the star -Acheive time travel and go back to 1995 and put a gomba cluster under the star OTHER NOTES -Can HSWing be repeated once you're forced out of the water? Does your h speed reset? -Does getting the 100 coin star help at all? - SCUTTLEBUG TRANSPORTATION????? (sorry for the meme)
if only the star was a bit lower, or the goomba zone was closer, or if there was a slippery surface anywhere in the level, or if you could clone in jrb, or if you could use vsc, or if you could stand on the chests, or if the falling pillar knocked you back enough, or if you could slide kick fast enough, or if the ceiling hitbox was lower... it feels like this star was intricately designed to be as close as possible to being collected without the a button as possible without being possible
"Let's examine these suggestions" - oh no... when I read this in one of your videos I know nothing will work :( As for the hyper speed water sliding - what properties does the side of the ship have? You managed to walk up there, but what kind of wall is it? like the pillars (and thus useless)? This star is so annoying! It's hanging right in front of you but just a tiny bit too far away, grr!
The Slide Kick would work with 90 speed, so if you could manage to pull of 50 chained slide kicks, land on the rock with another chained slide kick, then you could chain another slide kick to the star? According to your 100 Lap Video 90 speed is the exact amount that Slide Kicks cap at. (Though while recovering, not while landing, so maybe that destroys it already.)
If this doesn't already have a solution, then would you be able to set the HOLP below the stage such that the peak of the out-of-bounds item's sphere radius is in the center of the star platform? In this way, you could activate the chests (by avoiding the middle), then reactivate it in order to gain height. The spherical shape may force you to use the rock in suggestion #4 to get to the platform without activating it, though.
I wonder if this is possible now. I've seen Simple clone a water shell in DDD by throwing it when he was re-entering water. If Pannen completed the chest puzzle and came back with a cloned shell, it could work. I'm surely missing something, though.
im pretty sure you can only clone with water shells in DDD because there is a loading zone in it, which reloads all the objects in the level, which includes the shell, allowing you to clone
I have an idea for killing the mystery goomba if you hacked in a way to do the shell glitch from you video SM64 - Mario she'll glitch and grab a chuckya, in the video he was still able to throw you, maybe he could throw you on the mystery goomba because it looked like he threw you past the death barrier (could just be me)
skytheguy you can't get the 100 coin star under the chest star, the only way to do that is to either clone the star or a coin and cloning doesn't work in JRB
I love your videos. I've noticed that with the blue cap stage you will slide down the slide to get the red coins, but if you crouch and crawl you can crawl all the way back up to the top. I think you can also do this for the roof of Big Boo's Haunt as well. Have you ever thought about doing a video to explain this as it doesn't seem to me something that was programmed on purpose.
The speed keeps reducing while moonwlking. 100 in water, but less than 90 on the rock. (Even 150 isn't enough, it would still be less than 90 on the rock).
I feel like these videos could easily be renamed to "I've already tried these things guys, please stop emailing me."

+Daniel Baker The only real b save was manipulating the baby penguin to the cannon and using it to grab him. I think plush did this.
i come back to this 5-year old video every so often when i want to relive the disappointment
Looks like Suggestion 6 was the solution. Just took some extra work figuring out the route
Damn, over 4 years later and we have nothing that could help do this 0x
any ideas on hypothetical ways of grabbing a shell fake?
(1) Simultaneously moving onto land and having its timer run out
(2) Simultaneously moving onto land, throwing the shell, and having its timer run out
(3) Grabbing the shell the moment it appears after throwing it
(4) Throwing the shell right when dropping into water
I've tried all of these things, and they've all failed
damn, well it seems like there's no conceivable way to grab a fake shell then. hopefully something will eventually be found to help remedy that
You can't stand on chests? Weird. I always thought you could.
On the DS version you can
You can in Ocarina of Time so it feels weird to see chests in SM64 that you can't stand on lol
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Kevin vs. Gamingz Giggity.
at 3:26, are there clonable entities that have edges and can be walked on, thus reactivating vsc?
11:30 couldn’t you use the ground pound to get height after s the star was collected? I mean that looks like just enough to collect the star.
you cant groundpound after a DR so no
ERROR_Anything ah, Thanks.
We did it
Simply hold the A Button and jumpkick onto the star. Boom, JRB done in half an A Press.
kick doesnt supply enough height.
Using the HOLP, could you place an object in the out-of-bounds shown at 6:23 and interact with it when you clip through the wall? For example, could you place a (cloned?) Goomba there and collide with it so the knockback kills your H speed?
I guess. But we can't get through that gap anyway
new pannenkeok vid? watch immediately
This is genuinely really really interesting, thank you
Hey pannen, someone mentioned last video if there was a way to keep the demo from ending at the designated time, and it got me thinking a little. What if there is text on screen from reading a sign or talking to a bomb buddy as the demo ends, or if you're in a cannon? In regular gameplay, it's impossible to exit the game or die with one of the above parameters in effect, so I'm curious how the game would respond.
The most likely possibility is for it to end anyway. Unless it's bound to some death system, but dying in the demo causes the music to reset.
I wonder how far the 100 horizontal speed combined with some goomba bounce would go?
I guess not very ?
It's almost as if Nintendo knew that people would want to collect stars in unconventional ways and designed the level specifically to make it impossible.
At the same time there are so many stars that can be unconventionally collected without A, there are only 19 a presses remaining
I get the feeling that if a way to kill the mystery goomba from BitS is ever found, a similar technique could be used to reach the star as per suggestion #8. So that's two birds, we just need to find the stone.
9:23: What if you spawned the star, went back and cloned the shell, and went back to the star? Would that work?
you can't clone in jrb
This video is like a mystery themed blue balling
I'm convinced this has to be possible somehow
What if you somehow clone a goomba with hat in hand glitch, then clone its spawner? We'd need to find a way to make 2 clones though and the second one has to be made while not leaving the spawners radius. Or just spend another 5 years finding ACE to lower the star slightly lol
So, in short, if we can figure out how to do any of the following things 0x, we can save an A press:
-DR 24 units higher somehow
-Clone objects using the shell
-Build up 90+ speed in the cavern somehow
-Get to the 500 h speed mark anywhere
-Activate VCS under the star
-Somehow get to a high enough vantage point where a slide kick can reach the star
-Acheive time travel and go back to 1995 and put a gomba cluster under the star
OTHER NOTES
-Can HSWing be repeated once you're forced out of the water? Does your h speed reset?
-Does getting the 100 coin star help at all?
- SCUTTLEBUG TRANSPORTATION????? (sorry for the meme)
ARC127 or just change jump to b
This is just a small joke
good luck conserving that speed to the star
How do you do scuttlebug transportation when there are no scuttlubugs?
if only the star was a bit lower, or the goomba zone was closer, or if there was a slippery surface anywhere in the level, or if you could clone in jrb, or if you could use vsc, or if you could stand on the chests, or if the falling pillar knocked you back enough, or if you could slide kick fast enough, or if the ceiling hitbox was lower... it feels like this star was intricately designed to be as close as possible to being collected without the a button as possible without being possible
So, cloning would be the most promising should a new discovery be made.
Speed now. We can get 150 speed now.
WE DONE IT!
Have you tried both vertical and horizontal speed to reach the star?
It's a hard knock life, for us
It's a hard know life, for us!
one day. we'll get it one day
2:40 Thats where hyperspeed slide kicking comes into play
"Let's examine these suggestions" - oh no... when I read this in one of your videos I know nothing will work :( As for the hyper speed water sliding - what properties does the side of the ship have? You managed to walk up there, but what kind of wall is it? like the pillars (and thus useless)? This star is so annoying! It's hanging right in front of you but just a tiny bit too far away, grr!
Yep, he's back
The Slide Kick would work with 90 speed, so if you could manage to pull of 50 chained slide kicks, land on the rock with another chained slide kick, then you could chain another slide kick to the star?
According to your 100 Lap Video 90 speed is the exact amount that Slide Kicks cap at. (Though while recovering, not while landing, so maybe that destroys it already.)
andy02q
Slide kick recovering requires A.
In Thwomp 6x, the side kick recover at the end is actually a grind dive recover.
Oh cool we have no edge to grind on very helpful
If this doesn't already have a solution, then would you be able to set the HOLP below the stage such that the peak of the out-of-bounds item's sphere radius is in the center of the star platform? In this way, you could activate the chests (by avoiding the middle), then reactivate it in order to gain height. The spherical shape may force you to use the rock in suggestion #4 to get to the platform without activating it, though.
The DS remake allows you to dive recover into the chest star.
Oh come on! Really?!
**displeasement**
1:31 "And even if Mario manages to become dead-center in a chest, all that happens is that he won't be pushed out."
𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟲𝟰 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀
5:30 my brain when its a very serious situatio
So would the next step be trying to figure out how to clone in JRB? Because that would seem to solve the issue.
I wonder if this is possible now. I've seen Simple clone a water shell in DDD by throwing it when he was re-entering water. If Pannen completed the chest puzzle and came back with a cloned shell, it could work. I'm surely missing something, though.
if it is ever found out to be possible, pannenkoek will no doubt make a video on it.
im pretty sure you can only clone with water shells in DDD because there is a loading zone in it, which reloads all the objects in the level, which includes the shell, allowing you to clone
@@DoorknobPlus Damn pencil, you write
About idea 06, would it be possible to put an object with hitbox in the corner so it keeps Mario in it?
Edit: will not work for the same reason as 09.
pannen: **has no stars**
also pannen: if we spawn three stars, our example is in LLL, by the way,
I have an idea for killing the mystery goomba if you hacked in a way to do the shell glitch from you video SM64 - Mario she'll glitch and grab a chuckya, in the video he was still able to throw you, maybe he could throw you on the mystery goomba because it looked like he threw you past the death barrier (could just be me)
what if you managed to get a 100 coin star just below the star? can you collect a star mid-star dance?
lol I dont think so but nice idea
skytheguy you can't get the 100 coin star under the chest star, the only way to do that is to either clone the star or a coin and cloning doesn't work in JRB
@@Mateo-vz4fl even if we could then stars aren't collectable during the star dance state
I don't think so at leadt
least*
5:37 could you use that speed to help with the ZB slide? You only needed 90
How would you get to the star with that speed exactly?
by swiming then quickly getting on the rock
@@SuperM789 Your speed would be depleted by the time you got there.
Cant win 24 extra units over a single platform?
Lets Make TTC 0xA then
I love your videos. I've noticed that with the blue cap stage you will slide down the slide to get the red coins, but if you crouch and crawl you can crawl all the way back up to the top. I think you can also do this for the roof of Big Boo's Haunt as well. Have you ever thought about doing a video to explain this as it doesn't seem to me something that was programmed on purpose.
couldn't you get ~100 speed from the pillar, then use that speed to get 90 speed at the rock, then slide kick into the star?
no
You would end up depleting your speed as you travel to the rock.
Kevin vs. Gamingz
But is there enough speed to make it before it depletes?
Kevin vs. Gamingz
Also there's new tech for about 150 speed.
The speed keeps reducing while moonwlking. 100 in water, but less than 90 on the rock. (Even 150 isn't enough, it would still be less than 90 on the rock).
Mario 64 2 has been hiding in the chest all along! He is the secret treasure to -unlock luigi-
