Hello from South Africa. Great video. Thank you Matt for flying all the way to US to share this information. Good info for other countries, and good clarification for us
Hey Matt! Welcome to the U. S. ! Eric I hope y’all are having a good time. I’ve been subscribed to Matt’s channel for about a year now and I so enjoy the content. Funny story... I was in a gun range in Ft. Wort Tx. about two years ago where I recommend Matt’s channel to two immigrants from S.A. Of course they had achieved their citizenship and raise their son here in the states.... funny thing was that he had no accent whereas both the parents did. Anyway it’s good to see Matt here. Y’all have a good one.
Thanks for the great video, and for having Matt explain some of the hunting and gun culture practices in S Africa. I have some fond memories of time spent in the bushveld, hunting and fishing, serving in the military as a conscript during the 1970's - 80's was also an unforgettable experience.

Kekistan Supreme that sucks, hopefully you'll find somewhere to hunt if things don't die down. FYI don't go to Zimbabwe you won't be able to bring the taxidermy home plus a lot of other corrupt government bs.

Hi Eben, you can own a fully automatic firearm under a collectors license, Section 17, Category A. But I know it is quite difficult going through the license process. As with Section 16, you also need to be part of an association which will assist with the motivation.
Matt you taught me everything I know about airguns, just like Eric, Chad and Barry taught me a whole lot about firearms. Great to see you on this channel. Greetings from gun unfriendly Germany^^
This is a fairly good video around the gun culture here in South Africa as well as hunting and air gun stuff, but does little to talk to the laws and regulations around everyday gun owners that don't hunt. So to start, before you can think about getting a license for a firearm, you need to go through training of all the firearm groups you interested in and get certified. This will be getting books, studying, writing tests and physical shooting with that category you interested in or all. So I for example did 5 total exams. The law, handgun, shotgun, manual rifle, semi auto rifle. The training involves understanding the law, safely handling the weapon, cleaning it, shooting, carrying, etc. Then once the training is complete you are issued certificates. With these certificates, you can now apply for a competency certificate from the police department. Which entails fingerprints, background checks, interviews with friends, neighbours, spouse and check the validity of your training certificates. Applying takes about 30 Min to submit all. Then to process it, they take about 90 *working* days... And once you have it. It expires after 5 years and you must apply again and wait another 90 working days. Once that's done, you can now buy and apply for licence for any firearm in the categories you are competent in. This again is a process that takes ages to get through as Matt pointed out. But we have no restrictions an manufactures, etc. We can buy anything from 50cal BMG, to Russian imported AK rifles and American style guns. The gun must just be legal. Not used in a crime, not be full auto, etc. Only semi auto allowed. And you must write a motivational letter as to why you want the firearm. For self defence registered weapons, you only allowed to register 1 firearm and it can only be any pistol or a pump action shotgun. You can have more of those of you want, just not for self defence. And when I say this, I mean in your motivational letter. I cannot say I want this pistol for self defence, if you already have another for self defence. You would then need to transfer it. Handgun and self defence licence is valid for 5 years. Rifles for sport shooting and hunting is 10 years. If you have good reason and jump through extra hoops, you can get restricted guns as well as for self defence. By restricted I mean guns that are not usually allowed for self defence as well as fully auto weapons. But that will be very hard to get and those licences last only 2 years before expiry. And just to clear things up. If I'm at home and fall victim to a home invasion and they are armed, I can use my non self defence AK rifle to stop the threat without getting into trouble, it's mainly about the motivation to why you want the weapon. But in our constitution, we are allowed to break the law, to preserve life. And that being said we may not use a gun to protect property. Only when your life is at risk. So if someone is in your house, stealing your TV and they run away with it, you cannot Chase after them and shoot them. Ok, that's my rant over. I hope I covered everything
Big Bore Airguns are imported into South Africa and sold in a number of Airgun Stores without a licence . Hunting with Big Bore Airguns is still new but a lot of American come out here to hunt Big Game like Cape Buffalo with a Airgun
Well it is now 3 years later and a few things have changed. First the private property. The "government" is currently trying to put all property in the hands of the state. This is not exclusive to land. They will be able to take whatever they feel like, when ever they feel like. Second thing they are busy with, which ties in with the property, is gun ownership. They want to remove the right to own a firearm for self defense, hunting and sport shooting from the public. This in a country with an average of 58 murders a day with a population around 60M. The police have lost over 26000 firearms in the last 12 years and over 10 000000 rounds of ammunition. And to top it all, American tax payers, amongst a few other countries, are funding these people. It is not just white farmers getting killed, but every single race is at risk. The majority of legal firearm owners in this country is black, but the media will never report on this. Those that think this is a race thing, are either willfully ignorant or about as dumb as a tree stump!
This oke does not know the firearm rules. Fully automatic weapons are restricted to civilians. Civilians may own semi auto weapons ranging from pistols, rifles and shotguns on condition you are proficient with the required firearm and you have to substantiate your use of the firearm. Secondly suppressors are bought over the counter therefore no paper work required. On ARs there is no barrel restrictions but the same approval process applies. Please contact a reputable hunting lodge to confirm the import rules relating firearms and trophies.
Please, if you ask a clear and direct question, let the guest answer. Stop leading with a question then tangentially working through your own minutiae.
In 2003 or so, while going through college, I went through the process of trying to purchase and license a pistol. It was a beautiful Remington Rand 1911 from the early 40's. I had to go through multiple training classes, write a letter of justification, sit through a face to face interview with a police lieutenant, and waited two years after the initial application just for the police to say no. I was afforded the opportunity to appeal the decision, added supplementary training, re-did my letter of justification (self defense was not considered reasonable justification)and waited another two years for them to say no yet again. While collecting resources and additional paperwork to start the process over again, the store that was storing the pistol was robbed, the sales person executed in the indoor range and all the firearms in the store were stolen. Not long after that I moved to the U.S.
Matt, I'm going to say you're 25 years old. And THANK YOU for making this video. I've been following Matt for about a year. He has a great channel that makes me want to visit SA!
As a south african I feel this guy gave little to no information about gun laws I mean it's good to know people get fed from hunts but every question was answered with "I don't know ask someone else" . I haven't been doing this since 16 but still feel like I lost knowledge watching him.....otherwise never a bad episode from you lovely gentlemen!
Matt the FCA is not a grey area on air rifles. There is an OR there. It must be under .22 or under 8 joules. It doesn't need to tick both boxes. So if an airgun is over .22 just make sure it shoots less than 8 joules
Thanks Eric. I would love for you to do a video on the 375 H&H Magnum. Dangerous game in South Africa as well as large game here in North America will entertain using the 375 H&H Magnum.
Matt, love your pcp videos and hunting pests I’m not used to seeing. Your 6.5 and fx impact , video editing, etc all top notch. I’d love to hang out and hunt rock pigeons with you in SA. Be safe down there.
Just to clarify wrt type of licences as this was vaguely discussed First off you need to apply for a competency certificate to operate a firearm wrt the type of firearm you want to apply for, shotgun, handgun, manually operated rifle or semi automatic rifle. You need to complete a written test of the firearms control act and course with a registered organisation, further firearms training will also help especially wrt self defence applications down the line. After receiving your competency from the police you may apply for a licence to posses a firearm, usually takes 3 months, however one can wait up to or even exceeding a year. There are 3 main types for civilians: Self Defence: Valid for 5 years, only 200 rounds of ammunition may be held at a timer Occasional Hunting: Valid for 10 years, only 200 rounds of ammunition may be held Sports shooting/Dedicated Hunter: Valid for 10 years, may hold any amount of ammunition, must have dedicated status with a registered hunting or sports shooting organisiation.

The validity of the licence will be the same as that of the main licence that is issued. The licence will be cancelled if the main licence is cancelled or terminated in terms of the Act.
We are not on the edge of civil war here in the South Africa.... but we do have a serious crime problem and we will see how our new president addresses it we have a lot of faith in him. We have to renew our firearm licenses every 3, 5 or 10 years, depending on the type of firearm and license. You receive a physical license card for each firearm. Private sale firearms are also controlled by the licensing processes through the police. We don’t have public land like you have in the US, but we can buy our suppressors over the counter. I thoroughly enjoy Matt’s channel, he puts in a lot of effort.
Hi. 2 comments. On the video, the issue with licences usually comes down to why you want the gun. Sport shooting and hunting licences usually take the prescribed 6 to 12 weeks. A personal protection (concealed carry) licence that allows you to be armed in public would take a lot longer. Second comment is about the others comments on the video. Just my perspective. As a white, male, gun loving, land owner in South Africa, I have no fears or concerns about my safety. The farm attack rate is decreasing, not increasing, and the government isn't a concern because the judicial branch does a good job of keeping the others in check. I love it here and I'm not going anywhere.

You've got to "make tea time" in SA if you want things to move faster in the beauracracy
Not long after that I moved to the U.S.
been watching airArms for over a year now. great channel
Matt placed very well in a airgun shoot in Arizona last fall and did well this past weekend in Utah! Congrats Matt!
I've been a subscriber for years of him! Didn't expect to see him here
Matt, I'm going to say you're 25 years old. And THANK YOU for making this video. I've been following Matt for about a year. He has a great channel that makes me want to visit SA!
Bad ass! I watch the both of y’all all the time
Hi from South Africa
I was not expecting this collabaration!
Been subbing to both of y'all for while. Cool to see great minds coming together.
Stop farm murders and expropriation without compensation by the South African government! Love your videos! From SA
I love how he says "wildebeest".
So if an airgun is over .22 just make sure it shoots less than 8 joules
two of my favorite channels collaborating, amazing.
I did not expect a hunting video. A figured this would be about farm defense tactics.
Interesting idea! I like these videos. A cool insight.
I read the gun laws and it says full auto guns are not legal, but on a Cape Town gun website they are selling Ar15's and AK's
Thanks Eric. I would love for you to do a video on the 375 H&H Magnum. Dangerous game in South Africa as well as large game here in North America will entertain using the 375 H&H Magnum.
Don’t forget that I love this man’s channel because it also shows the beautiful South Africa 🇿🇦.
Waaaaa!? That's awesome! You go Matt! Much love
Matt, love your pcp videos and hunting pests I’m not used to seeing. Your 6.5 and fx impact , video editing, etc all top notch. I’d love to hang out and hunt rock pigeons with you in SA. Be safe down there.

I just discovered this guy a few days ago, and he's already here in the states with Iraqveteran8888. Pretty cool.
There’s 11 official ways to say “hello” in South Africa 😅. Loved your video 🤝🏾
So funny I literally watched this guy from SA the other day
Her: "Tell me something sexy."
Me: "Let me tell you the story of Rhodesia, a land both fair and great..."
I remember seeing an article in Time, with South African women carrying Uzi’s over their shoulder while walking down the street. Circa early 1980’s.
I love Matt's channel
He's 23... Started channel at 16, and Eric slipped and said 7 years ago now. He's doing well for being that age. Congrats.

He seems like a down to earth dude too. Pretty cool to hear how different the life style is over there.
Just to clarify wrt type of licences as this was vaguely discussed
First off you need to apply for a competency certificate to operate a firearm wrt the type of firearm you want to apply for, shotgun, handgun, manually operated rifle or semi automatic rifle. You need to complete a written test of the firearms control act and course with a registered organisation, further firearms training will also help especially wrt self defence applications down the line.
After receiving your competency from the police you may apply for a licence to posses a firearm, usually takes 3 months, however one can wait up to or even exceeding a year.
There are 3 main types for civilians:
Self Defence: Valid for 5 years, only 200 rounds of ammunition may be held at a timer
Occasional Hunting: Valid for 10 years, only 200 rounds of ammunition may be held
Sports shooting/Dedicated Hunter: Valid for 10 years, may hold any amount of ammunition, must have dedicated status with a registered hunting or sports shooting organisiation.
Licence to possess a firearm for self-defence (section 13)
A person may only possess one firearm for the purpose of this section, a shotgun that is not fully or semi-automatic, or a handgun that is not fully automatic. The licence, which is issued in terms of this section, is valid for five years from the date of issue, unless it is cancelled or terminated in terms of the Firearms Control Act, 2000.
Licence to possess a restricted firearm for self-defence (section 14)
A person may only possess one restricted firearm for the purpose of this section, which is a semi-automatic rifle or shotgun, which cannot readily be converted into a fully automatic firearm. The licence, which is issued in terms of this section, is valid for two years, unless it is cancelled or terminated in terms of the Firearms Control Act, 2000.
Licence to possess a firearm for occasional hunting or sports shooting (section 15)
A person may possess four firearms for the purpose of this section, which is a handgun not fully automatic; a rifle or shotgun, which is not fully/semi-automatic; or the barrel, frame or receiver of such a handgun, rifle or shotgun, which is regarded a firearm and must also be licensed.
If a person is in possession of a firearm licence for self-defence in terms of section 13, he/she may only apply for three firearm licences for the purpose of this section. Applications in terms of sections 13 and 15 collectively may not exceed four firearms.
The licence, which is issued in terms of this section, is valid for 10 years, unless it is cancelled or terminated in terms of the Firearms Control Act, 2000.

Licence to possess a firearm for dedicated hunting or dedicated sports shooting (section 16) and professional hunting (section 16A)

Isn't South Africa turning into Mogadishu, Somalia?
That's Sweden and Minnesota.
South Africa's homicide rate is 6 times higher than Mogadishu's. Somalia is a haven of peace and love compared the the shithole that is South Africa.
David H.
On point, I live in Minnesota.
Better than North Cuba aka Florida though.
Never though I would see the day! Matt & Eric, awesome video guys great to see you two together thanks.
"Before the war and especially before the Boer war, it was summer all the year round" George Orwell
I thoroughly enjoy Matt’s channel, he puts in a lot of effort.
save the Boer
boer (defined as white man)
Matt! Love your channel, keep up the great work
Great guest, this was very refreshing
Awesome guy and an awesome channel! I love these videos because it really shows you what's going on around the world in terms of gun culture.
Broooo I’m so excited I am already subbed to air hunting
Holy shit never thought I’d see you two together
Hi.
I love it here and I'm not going anywhere.
speaking of South Africa... Lauren Southern just released her documentary "Farmlands!"
