Edgar knows something Homelander doesn't: when you're the head of the company, it's your success if it goes well and your failure if it doesn't because that's all the public sees. When things go bad (and they will because this is Homelander, he will eventually be messing up or kill someone in a fit of rage), Homelander will likely try to punch his way out of a bad situation but it's not the same as knowing how to actually deal with a problem. He has the ability to not give a sh*t because there are always other people there to clean up his mess but when those people are gone he will have to do that himself and he does not have the skills, temper or know-how to do that effectively.

Homelander genuinely enjoys people who aren't afraid of him. They're so rare in his life (only Butcher and Edgar) that he seems to like speaking with them. They're the only people whom he shows actual respect for - he asks Butcher's permission to come into his home (as opposed to just entering Newman's home) and he lets Edgar openly insult him (compared to threatening to kill A Train for insulting him behind his back). Since Maeve also stood up to him, he seemed to speak to her more as an equal (even though he took her prisoner), and it'll be interesting to see how his dynamic with Starlight also changes.

His facial expressions, the smugness and quick eye darts over to Stan after he finishes any of his cheap attempts to hurt him are so telling. But unlike Homelander, Stan doesn’t need his respect and isn’t scared of him. You could see in Homelander’s face right before he said “don’t blame Vicky” his expression dropped a little, because he could tell what he was saying still wasn’t bothering Stan in the slightest, so he had to go for the closest thing he had for a daughter. And even there, Stan instead was impressed rather than hurt by Victoria’s actions. Absolutely love the details in this scene and the show in general.

I can't tell if the shudder at 1:06 is either:
Homelander cracking a joke at how dark and poetic Edgar was with his statement and choice of words.

      He's definitely posturing.
He wants to appear unfazed by Edgar's comment there but the fact that he even reacted at all to it is why Stan won. Every single needling comment Homelander makes in this scene falls on deaf ears. Stan absolutely does not give a shit about Homelander or what he could do. Whereas Homelander truly is weighing his entire ego on Stan's view of him. He wants a reaction, he tries to play on Stan's level by fighting with words, and he still gets utterly decimated, because at the end of the day, he still cares, while Stan doesn't.

The one instance about it way earlier in the season when Edgar said he was planning on leaving behind superheroes as a business in 5 years. What happened in this episode? Edgar was thrown out Vaught cutting his ties with the superhero business. This wasn't Edgar being played and betrayed, this is the first step in his plan to make a company that doesn't need superheroes at all. He is on top of things and no one can see it.

After the company is fucked by Homelander with Ashley taking the blame as CEO, he'll come back like a knight in shining armour to restore the company back to glory. By the end of Homelanders coup, most of the permanent supes will be dead or retired which will remove all of the flawed product from Voughts lineup. Leaving only the Temp V and the multi-billion dollar military contracts as their new income source.

The title - glorious five year plan - is a reference to the comic's superhero team of soviet union heroes, called 'the glorious five year plan' and named after the shift of industrialization under Joseph Stalin. The title probably refers to how the Boys go to russia.
That said, I could see your theory being correct as said superhero team don't exist in the boys show, as far as we can tell, because the only member to appear is one of the inmates in the supe facility we saw in season 2.
