Bob is my musical idol....solo, Husker, Sugar. More important to me than Bowie, Stones, Clash, Velvets. My wife, son and I all love him. Brings the whole family together.
I've seen Metallica, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden, but the loudest concert I ever saw was Bob Mould touring for this album at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. I was in the front row though. It was one of my favorite shows ever.
I should add, protect your ears; I'm over 50 and wish I'd worn ear protection to every show I ever went to. I also play guitar and bass and have not taken the greatest care there either. I have to have some kind of white noise when I go to sleep at night.
Listen to Husker Du as the others mentioned. I'd start with Candy Apple Grey since it's probably their most accessible or the song "Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely". The band was a huge influence on Green Day. They did the punk rock rock opera before American Idiot with Zen Arcade. Green Day covered the song I mentioned above too. Them, Pixies, The Replacements, and Dinosaur Jr. laid the groundwork for 90's alternative and beyond.
This song was the 1st Bob song I ever heard when it was released. I wore this cassette tape out. His music just gets better the older he gets. I wish I could play the guitar like Bob.
I was abused by my father and the people I grew up with. This song first time I heard it gave me hope. I remember the first time I heard it,thank you Bob. I may write you and tell you but thank you for giving me hope
Fantastic! I had opportunity to let Bob know that "Whatever" (Zen Arcade) was the song that saw me through so many dark days!!! Stay strong, its worth it!
I’m glad you said it. It’s criminal that the only alt band of the 80’s to make it really big was R.E.M., meanwhile Husker Du, the Replacements, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., etc…remained “underground” and supported primarily by hardcore fans. See a Little Light is a perfect Alt-pop song and should have been massive. If it had been released 4 or 5 years later during Alt Rock’s brief mainstream reign, it would have been all over radio and would be considered a classic by more than just people like us.
chefragoo Hopefully some of the young folks that are here thanks to a Netflix soundtrack will go look up the rest of the album. This was definitely the obvious single, but the album is great beginning-to-end. Well, except for maybe "Brasilia Crossed With Trenton" .... never really have got into that track.
@@michaelolson291 I don't mean to be disagreeable (minor quibble), but BCWT is my favorite track on the album! But the whole album is indeed a masterpiece!
I have been to hundreds of concerts of many genres of music but when i saw Bob Mould when he came to Detroit on his first solo tour here you could just not miss his passion and love of playing his music
I'll,never forget seeing him live at a small venue in LA long ago. He went into a zone repeating the refrain, thumping on his guitar with the heel of his hand, sweating ... absolutely loved it
I grew up in the Minneapolis metro area (suburbs) and never got to see Bob Mould play live in the area because I was always playing music in different bands. The problem is we were never good enough to even open a show for Bob! Love your music and hope it never goes away!!!
Workbook is such a great album! Love this song... been reading his book ( See a Little Light ) and going back and listening to everything from Husker Du, Sugar and now... Bob Mould is the best!

Bob, I saw you many years ago in Madison, Wisconsin. It was just you and a guitar. One of my favorite shows ever. My ex husband brought Workbook to my house for our first dinner date. And this song made me cry in a good way. So beautiful. Thank you for it.
He’s at summerfest tomm and it’s the last day so it’s free. I’m in Madison also so just letting you know just in case it helps. I lost my husband 2 months ago, but your comment reminded me of him. So passing along some love.
I think its funny and cute that the show introduced some teens to a few well known 80s songs like Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." But I can't blame anyone for not previously being aware of Bob Mould. He's one of the lead singers of a post-punk/hardcore band from the 80s called Husker Du, which some have heard of, and they're a legend in the alternative rock scene, but they're certainly not a super widely recognized band. So a solo track by one of the singers from said band is even more obscure. But I'm very glad that you found this song. Very good show too.
I'm almost 40 but for some reason I waited until about two months ago to start listening to Husker Du. That led me to sugar which led me to Bob's later solo work and then to this song. What a fantastic career by a guy whose music I hadn't even heard until two months ago. Makes me wonder what else is out there that I've never heard of.
I'm just going to say how much I love this song and how my favorite live performance was you with an acoustic guitar on a stool and it was the loudest thing. Also, it was very beautiful.
I love how a new show, "13 Reasons Why," takes a much older song (from 1989) and finds a whole new audience. Same with Selena's cover of "Only You" and countless other songs that started the New Wave sound of the 80s. (Cure, Alarm, Joy Division, etc. the music makes the show) Looking forward to Season 2.
I remember this song when it first came out. I am a big Husker Dü fan, when the band split up, I followed Bob’s solo stuff and into his band “Sugar”. He’s a talented genius. If you like this, you’ll love his other stuff, especially “Sugar”
I'm a old metalheads but when I pop my sugar CDs in the car stereo I instantly think I can sing and make a complete idiot of.myself at the traffic light. So if you see an old.man in a work truck singing Panama Hotel at the traffic light as loud as he can, that's me!
charles popp i was connected to Bob via MySpace years ago and i sent him a message that his music and the way he plays guitar inspired my musical life and my guitar playing. As someone who has only recently discovered Husker Du and the lyrical workings Bob Mould, I got a really special feeling when this played at the end of 13 Reasons.
I remember years ago watching the first season of thirteen reasons why. The end of the first season this score plays and I literally typed in a few words from the lyrics then bam I found it. Crazy how 6 1/2 years later and here I am again listening to this once again. Not to mention I only like the newer generation rap because I’m a youngin
I can't believe it's been almost 3 decades since I was introduced to this song at the Metro in chicago. Fuck I'm getting old. Still a great song though.
We are all to never succumb to despair, but thank God for heaven though, and the not so little light up there...where you and owl be ALive for a blissful eternity, with no regrets , nor ever looking back of course...Shema!!!

BTW, a lot of people correctly note the "Who" inspiration for the sound of this song. It's actually better than any of Townsend's solo material - but check out "Slit Skirts" for a similar feel. This is a better song than "Slit Skirts" but listen to them back to back anyway.
Just finished his book, which was illuminating, to say the least...I remember how disappointed I was with this record when it was first released, still under the spell of Husker, but the years have been kind to it. Keep evolving, Bob, you're in the pantheon.

ignoring his forays into 'electronica', everything bob's done has been neglected commercially, yet it's all been brilliant from the huskers to solo and sugar. the man to whom nirvana and pixies owe a huge debt for laying the groundwork for their successes.

I thought the Letterman appearance was almost too loud. Almost 😏
I'm going to see him in concert next October. Should I bring ear plugs?
This song has a maturity to it in that it's wistful, bittersweet; but also expresses the joy of being alive. An all-time classic.
