THANKS SO MUCCHHH you explained it perfectly and now I can FINALLY start to make chiptune, btw would it be cool to share the sound file at 2:20? that would be brilliant
Thank you for the comment, EthanBlox! I'm currently writing music/creating sounds for a couple game projects. It's pretty time consuming. I'll put out more videos in the future, though. :D
Most DAWs have simple waveform instruments. If you want an NES-style sound, try turning off all the effects on them, and only use Square, Triangle, and Noise waveforms. Not quite FamiTracker, but pretty close in a pinch.
Pretty similar to modern synths! The vibrato effect (effect 4) is essentially an LFO with two parameters: frequency and depth. The frequency modulates the rate of the waveform (speed of vibrato) and the depth modulates how much the note is changed by. Both values are in hex 0-F.
Thanks for the tutorial, now I'll really impress my music teacher and friends. But I'm wondering what that song was in the beginning, I heard fluttering and I need more of it.
Thanks, this was quite informative. 👍 ...although I am never ever going to forgive you for the Famitracker cover of "Shake it Off". I can't get that out of my head now and I absolutely despise it.
Funny thing is I don't even recall why I arranged it in FamiTracker. XD Anyway, we damned tracker musicians ask not for forgiveness, but want only for a moment's respite from the flames of hexadecimal.
That's a useful tool for any hex number greater than 15. If you want to track quickly and efficiently, I still recommend memorizing the hex values A through F. Single digit values are used extensively throughout the program, and it's only six new symbols to learn. Good luck! 😆
sir, thank you very much. Im still lost in some basics though, for example, what is the basic hardware setup to start creating music? pc, interface and midi controller right? what do you recommend?
You can create music with a PC (Windows works) and computer keyboard. You don't necessarily need a MIDI controller, but you can use one if you like. Personally, I think it's slower composing with a MIDI keyboard compared to computer keyboard! Hope that helps.

Thanks for the comment, Beat Therapy! I dig your music. Happy to see so many tracker musicians leave comments here. :) In terms of functionality, FamiTracker emulates the NES/Famicom's audio hardware directly; therefore, FamiTracker's limits are equivalent to the NES/Famicom's audio production capabilities. The program's functions, or features, are then designed to manipulate mostly simple waveforms (square, triangle, saw, etc.) and basic sampling (DPCM). MPT/FastTracker are sampled/plugin based music trackers. Their functionality is based around the programmer's conception of the program itself. They're capable of A LOT more than FamiTracker and are much more complex. As an XM/mod maker, I'm sure you know. XD As far as the retro connection, FamiTracker creates authentic 5 channel 2A03 based NES/Famicom music, so a lot of composers like it for that reason! Hope that answers your questions!

The \ equal sign triggers the release portion of your instrument's envelope. It sounds like you need to add one to your instrument. Add a release phase by opening your instrument up and typing a forward slash ( the "/" symbol) in the envelope field followed by the release you'd like. Example to copy and paste in your instruments volume envelope field: 15 / 15 4 3 2 1 0 The instrument will now trigger the release portion of your instrument's envelope (everything after the / above) at the "=" sign. Play around with the numbers and find something you like. Hope that helps!
It's difficult for me to diagnose what's wrong without seeing what's going on for you. I would suggest finding a module and studying it to understand how effects are implemented!
Appreciate the comment. I'm sure there are programs aimed at creating 16-bit music; however, 16-bit music is fundamentally different in that it is primarily created through sampling rather than through hardware making bleeps and bloops.

Example to copy and paste in your instruments volume envelope field: 15 / 15 4 3 2 1 0
The instrument will now trigger the release portion of your instrument's envelope (everything after the / above) at the "=" sign. Play around with the numbers and find something you like.
Hope that helps!
@@MatthewIvic I found out now, I just had to press the number 1.
| and \ dont seem to work for me, when click on a different effect then go back the symbols are gone, and i dont hear them do anything either
It's difficult for me to diagnose what's wrong without seeing what's going on for you. I would suggest finding a module and studying it to understand how effects are implemented!
How am I supposed to get this app? I've been wanting it for ages
I have a link in the video description to the famitracker website. You can download it there for free. Good luck!

My pleasure.
I got one question, since Famitracker is program to make 8-bit music, is there a program to make 16-bit music?
Appreciate the comment. I'm sure there are programs aimed at creating 16-bit music; however, 16-bit music is fundamentally different in that it is primarily created through sampling rather than through hardware making bleeps and bloops.
@@MatthewIvic Thank you for answering my question.
I got one question, can this music play on the actually NES?
Yep! It can be exported and loaded through emulators and actual cartridges. You can even import music from games and check out the code.
@@MatthewIvic Thank you for answering my question.
i know how to use it but i don't use it very much
i always use Deflek mask
I use DefleMask too! xD
You had me at the Taylor Swift cover.
Works too well with FT. :)
therie s a way to expor file as mp3 or another audio format
Yep.wav
Thanks so much this was about as long of a video i could watch with my attention span, very informative!! Is there some place for famitracker community like discord?
Glad it kept you interested! As for the community, no discord that I know of. Happy to answer your questions here, though.
@@MatthewIvic thank you, thats sad, i hoped there would be some sort of community. I tried playing with it today for the first time for an hour or two, i figured out controls finally (i gave up quickly before 😥) and i thought i had envelope stuff figured out too, but i cant make my noise channel sound like hihat/drum, even though i tried putting 0 in its pitch envelope at the end; moreover i dont know how to make separate channels (triangle, noise etc) have separate envelopes so they dont all sound in the same way? Do i need to create more instruments? Lastly, how do i make the program switch automatically between sessions (the upper left corner window thingies)? Is there a way to include information to switch between them as it reads the music? Sorry if this is hard to understand, im a bit lost 😅
@@YuukiuuYik For the Hi-hat try a short volume envelope like 12 6 2 0 with a high hex value like A-F. For separate envelopes, make new instruments! Not entirely sure what you mean about sessions, but you can switch between pieces using the Song menu! Hope that helps. Might throw together a Discord with common questions/answers etc. if others are interested. :)
Is this free and can you use the music you make to add too your page
The program is completely free! You own the rights to the music you create.
Glad to see famitracker seems to be coming back :D - also incase anyone didn't know theres a discord for famitracker which helped me alot after repicking up famitracker a year later (maybe it can help newbies idk :) ) it can be find here forums.famitracker.com/viewtopic.php?t=2666 ~ great vid matt keep up the great work :D
Is there anything like this for Mac?
Hey, Tornait. I'm not too familiar with running FT on Mac, but if I remember correctly there's also NESICIDE, a cross platform IDE which can run FT on Mac. I haven't used it personally, but if you want to research it a bit more, here's their site: knob.phreneticappsllc.com/nesicide/?s=about
Good luck!
Hello, would someone answer me, how do I convert to mp3?
Under File create a WAV. Use a program, like VLC Media Player (it's free), to convert WAV to mp3. Hope that helps.
@@MatthewIvic Thank you :)
How can I download for android?
I don't think you can run FamiTracker on Android (unless someone has developed an emulator).
You may want to check out DefleMask, though. They have a phone app for making chiptunes!
@@MatthewIvic Luckily i found an app called 8tones in the amazon play store, it's like fami tracker but for android :)
Nice!
IDK why but I can't access the link with the assets, anybody knows why does this happen to me?
I can confirm the tutorial example files are still online. Do you have AdBlock enabled by chance?
@@MatthewIvic I don't have any ad blocker, but I guess is just my computer being dumb or something, I still got some useful information from this, so thanks a lot!
wow
Thanks for the comment!

I like who theres no dislikes on this video.
I like how there are no dislikes on this comment!
I came here to make a Gremlins theme remix
May success come to you.
It only reads its own format.
Congratulations to the creator for his brain, which he obviously dont have much of....
Not sure what you mean here...
If you have a problem with the program or video, I would suggest better etiquette.
I know this is the internet and all, but insulting others will not usually get you help.
However, I shall give you one shot at redemption. Please rephrase your question, and I shall do my best to answer.
Good luck.
