    About my new RUclips channel:
The official BRIAN MAY CHANNEL is designed to carry anything on film or video that relates to me [Brian May] outside Queen - to replace all the bits and pieces of music video that are currently around out there with new highest quality versions, and fill in the gaps; and to cover under one umbrella the other areas that I operate in … Stereoscopy, Astronomy, and my animal welfare work through my charity the Save Me Trust. Each of these areas will have their own playlist on the Brian May channel. But the intended pivot of it all is the entirely new part that we’re calling Brian Talks. This section will carry current ‘to the camera’ comments, updates and communications, and I’m hoping it will be a proper ‘voice’ for me, an outlet, as well as a way of glueing together the rest of the channel.

One of the first stereoscopes I saw was a modern one - a view of the Himalayas taken from the space shuttle. It was really amazing to see all of the peaks in seemingly perfect 3D

Hooray for Brian!! Thanks for all that you've done to promote and celebrate stereoscopy!! You all should make sure to get his books, they're fantastic. The Diableries book is particularly fascinating.

I didn't grow up on Queen music, but I learned to love it thru a friend who is a Queen fanatic, and to come to know that the guitarist likes physics, and particularly stereoscopy! I have my own Monarch stereoscope and various stereo-cards from around the turn of the century and of course a Viewmaster. I also have twenty-six year old theories in invisibility ( adaptive camouflage) and holodeck ( virtual immersion) technologies based on autostereoscopy that makes use of my modified version of light field integral imaging.

I had the pleasure of attending the talk at Oxford University on the 4th of February entitled Egypt in the Stereoscope: From Francis Frith to Harry Burton. We saw some absolutely incredible images, some were vintage and some newly made and it kickstarted in me a fascination for stereoscopy. I’m currently looking for a stereoscopic viewer with an anaglyphic coating to allow the full range of stereo and 3D images to be viewed. Does anyone know where a viewer such as this could be purchased? I’m currently waiting for an owl mini to come through the post and looking forward to the fun I can have with the stereo images😊👓📷👍🏽

Glad to hear that people are still interested in stereo photography. The simplest and cheapest way to view stereo images is with anaglyph glasses which can be obtained for just a few dollars for the cheap cardboard version or you can get a slightly more expensive version which look like cheap sunglasses. I'm sure they make higher end glasses with actual glass lenses but I haven't seen them available as a product.
Another reasonable way to view stereo is to find an old stereoscope at an antique shop as they can be found relatively easily but cost a more than anaglyph. When I used to digitally print my stereo images I would use an over under viewer which gave a better presentation than either of the above options. One essential piece of software that is free to use is called "stereo photo maker" which was last updated March of 2023. The program will allow you to import stereo pairs with several options of how to view the final image including anaglyph. The bonus to viewing it through the program on a monitor is that you can zoom into the image and maintain the proper stereo separation which would never be possible in print form.
The Egypt in the Stereoscope presentation must have been quite the spectacle. Interestingly some of the older stereocards of Egypt were commissioned by the Keystone company back in the 1920's. I worked for a guy who rescued the original negatives from Keystone some time in the 90's. They were stored in the stairwell of an old building and somehow he acquired them and transported them cross country from New York to California in a 40 foot truck as there were more than a hundred thousand prints and two hundred fifty thousand glass negatives stored in wooden crates. They were donated to the University of California Riverside as the Keystone-Mast Collection. They have some of them digitized in their archives for public viewing but only a small percentage due to the enormous amount in their collection. Being able to digitize the rest of them would be my fantasy job as well as a public service because people need to know what history looked like with both eyes open, (3D) which is how we perceive the world, the alternative being "pirate vision" a.k.a. 2D.
Worth noting is that you can take stereo(3D) photos with just one camera. As long as nothing moves in the scene you can take the first image as either left or right and then shift the camera on the horizontal axis by about 3 inches and then take the 2nd view. Using the stereo photo maker program will allow you to edit and view them. When I was actively taking stereo images I rigged up two digital cameras on a horizontal bracket and then linked them by taking two wired remote controls and splicing two plugs into one control so that both cameras would trigger at the same time. Somehow this rudimentary hack worked as I tested the setup and was able to have both cameras capture in sync with the on camera flash to prove that the timing was accurate. I got some great action shots that way.

Hi Brian, that is very interesting. The 3-D images that I am familiar with is that of the "Magic Eye" books. If you are not familiar, it is where you look at an image and your brain draws out the images from a pattern of seemingly ambiguous colors or patterns. Is stereoscopy much like this in terms of cognitive resolution? Thanks.

hi, Brian, what cameras do you use yourself? are there any digital 3D cameras available, Ild like to be able to print out pics on my printer and use some special lenses and see the magic; btw I have Queen in 3D, first all pics were blurred, I was very unhappy with that, I thought it was much ado about nothing, then my girlfriend took the book and said she saw in 3D and then I was able to see... and it was amazing

Hopefully this comment reaches you and if not maybe it will inspire somebody else to give it a try. A great program for editing and viewing your own stereo images is called "stereo photo maker" which is a free open source program. As far as dedicated stereo(3D) cameras go I am not sure if they make one but the simplest way to take stereo photos is with a single digital camera and take two consecutive images by moving the camera/ perspective by about 3 inches on the horizontal baseline as long as there is no movement in the frame it will be perfect. You can also experiment with the baseline separation by changing the spacing between the shots for either hyper-stereo for stuff that is far away or macro-stereo for stuff that is close up.

I wish I could see these, but sadly my eyes do not work together, I only see out of one eye at a time, so such 3D effect techniques have no effect on me :(

What is crazy is that the first 3D printed stereo images were hand drawn line drawings before photography was invented. A lot of the earliest photographs were taken in stereo with a dual lens camera and captured on glass negatives. I consider standard 2D photography to be "pirate vision".
