  • Hi everyone! I ordered an antique stereoscope & stereograph cards for myself, and I decided to make an unboxing video!
    ↓ ↓ More stuff below! ↓ ↓
    Oliver Wendell Holmes chose not to patent his stereoscope design. This particular stereoscope that I bought is a "Perfecscope," which is a Holmes-style stereoscope. Check out this Norman Rockwell painting of a boy with the same kind: commons.wikime... (It was the cover of the Saturday Evening Post on January 14, 1922.)
    See more stereographs here: www.loc.gov/co...
    I plan to do some research on how best to clean the stereoscope and photos--if you have any ideas, please leave a comment below!

    We've got a bunch of these in the museum where I work. We keep one out for visitors to try out and the kids love it! And by "kids" I mean both the actual kids and the adults who turn into big kids the minute they walk in. lol

    I have a lot of stereoview cards with people: Edward VII of the United Kingdom, George V ... , William McKinley, Ida McKinley, Woodrow Wilson, Pope Pius X, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Also at 6:52 it is a market scene in Cologne, Germany.

    I was looking into stereo cameras and wanted to see what a stereopticon looked like. This was fascinating to watch! Thank you for making this video!

    It’s amazing what people were able to do without the help of the internet. Things like using a sextant to find latitude at sea is some incredible ingenuity. Also related, the history of ‘the longitude problem’ is a great read on Wikipedia.

    • @TheCuriousWorld
      @TheCuriousWorld  3 года назад +1

      Right?? Every time I see a large building or structure or ANYTHING from the past, I can't believe it was done without computers. I'll check out the longitude problem--sounds interesting, thanks!

      check out Dava Sobel's book "Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time" -- it's a great read. I think there was a Nova on PBS based on it as well?

    I make stereo photos using two small identical cameras on a stick. I put the images side by side using software or manually, email them to a smartphone, and then use a stereoscope like this one for viewing.

      Bridget, you are very welcome! It is so nice you love history and stereo cards. Have you ever looked at a daguerreotype photograph? It is magical to look at a person in the 1840s who could have been born in the late 1700s. It makes you think! I will be looking forward to seeing more of your great postings about history!

    The last in the series seem to be a wedding. From bridal retinue, everyone at ‘ceremony’ (staged metihinks) scrunching in for the special photo. Ending with blushing bride in risqué pose on husband’s lap! Finally her modest veil is on the chair and they have moved to...to... the bed!? My hand to forehead in shock, stumbling towards the ‘fainting couch’’. Any note on the border writing as to who the family is. Might come up in a search of the Guilded Age. Could be a real rabbit hole, ahh!

    • @TheCuriousWorld
      @TheCuriousWorld  3 года назад +2

      Yes, I enjoy those (likely staged) wedding photos as well. I'll definitely try to find out more about all the photos sometime soon!

    I finally broke down and bought the one from the antique store in town, I've collect a few of the cards over the years, as I collect Cabinet cards, VDC, Tin Types, ect. I collect the odd ones of these, I have a Courting Couple, then on their Wedding day, Santa Clause and a few considered naughty ones( not naked, but in undergarments, naughty for the time period) got one today of a lady in her undergarments smoking a cigarette.

    I was going to get back into ViewMaster images for the first time since I was a kid, but I was just hooked up with an antique stereoscope. So, yeah, the ViewMaster will have to wait.

    This is very cool. Related to your last video, have you seen the restoration/upscales of older videos? In particular, the 'Flying Train' in 1903(?) Germany is very cool. It seems like something you would enjoy. Please, keep the videos coming! Love your channel.

      Yessss those are some of my favorite videos on RUclips! I'm not sure if I've seen Flying Train--I'll look it up, thanks! Have you seen this footage of NYC in 1911? Obsessed: ruclips.net/video/hZ1OgQL9_Cw/видео.html

      @@TheCuriousWorld Okay, that was pretty awesome and it looks like it was posted by the same person who did the Flying Train Video. 😁 So many people in the one you linked. With your fascination with faces, I certainly understand why you like it! I couldn't help but wonder what became of their lives. Do they have living relatives? And do they know about the video? Questions that will probably never be answered, but it's fascinating nonetheless. A fun side note about the train: My best friend is German, lives there, has been on that train, and was amazed by the video.

      It's funny--I actually have notifications turned on for that channel because I am OBSESSED, but somehow I missed the Flying Train. What a cool video, thanks for sharing. I had no idea that train still exists!! New thing added to my bucket list :)

    I wrote my Master's Thesis in History on Stereography. I had a ball doing all of the research and it has become my personal hobby. Literally, every subject that could be stereo photographed was. It's an excellent way to learn about the 19th and early 20th centuries.

    Thank you for the very interesting video. Although Ive read a fair bit about stereo cards and seen samples online, Ive never actually seen one in real life. I have heard about the curve that they generally have and I can clearly see in your video that they are curved dramatically. They also look very thick too. The next time I'm in an antique store, I'll see if I can find some stereo cards. I do have Brian May's "Owl" stereo viewer so I can view them in 3D.

    When I was really little, I visited my great grandparents’ farmhouse. My dad’s MomMom put one of these in front of me and I thought it was magic. It was clearly a picture, but it was scarily alive.

    So I was looking at cheap vr headsets online and realized they looked pretty similar to an old stereoscope. Out of curiousity, I put a vr video from youtube on my cell phone and stuck the phone in a stereoscope I have (it looks pretty much like yours). It worked. I just leaned the phone against the wooden divider. I know this is probably sacrilege to stereoscope lovers, but I thought it was an interesting combination of the old and the new.
