- I've enhanced the broadcast recording of the 1979 Week 9 Seahawks at Falcons Monday Night Football game. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the DVD files used for this project. I ran it through Topaz to upscale, denoise, sharpen and double the framerate. I then used Da Vinci Resolve to more balance the contrast, de-saturate the color somewhat, and back the greens off a bit. Even after all that the field is still VERY green, which must be a trick of the lighting and maybe because it was raining that night? Picture also has a very soft focus. What is so great and so amazing about many of these games is that back in the 70's we weren't able to watch most of these games. Back then we had ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and a couple of locally run stations. Obviously back then ESPN, the NFL Network, and all of the other sports channels/networks didn't exist. I can remember begging my Grandparents or my parents to PLEEEEEEAAAAASEEEE let me stay up late on Monday nights just so I could watch the CLASSIC Half-Time Highlights on Monday🌙🌃Night🏙🌙 🏈🏉Football🏉🏈 !! It was one of the few times that we could watch these teams in action. In 1976 it was really cool because the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had just come into the league and being a huge fan of the helmet logos and mascots I really wanted to check them both out. Plus some of these games were televised when I was a little kid and I was incapable of sitting still for a full NFL game. Either way I am a huge fan of the sport of football and I really enjoy watching it! Whoever the teams are, where ever they play, it's a blast to just sit back and watch!
This MNF intro music ranks right up there for me with the themes from M*A*S*H and The Rockford Files in their time-machine ability to take me right back to that time.
Me too
When MNF was truly Must See TV.
I grew up in Atlanta, and back then I cared. It's a virtual certainty I was glued to the TV to watch this game at age 13.
BTW, great work. With age, memories gain importance. Some of the good times were with family gathered around to watch the games. Loved ones long gone, and sorely missed. Even the ads are meaningful. Thanks.
Lynn Cain and William Andrews was an above average backfield.
That's a fair assessment
Not really, football was just better back then. They were Mid at best
@@RexJacobus-bb1vwSay what you want about Cain, but there was NOTHING “mid” about William Andrews. He was easily one of the league’s top backs from the time he came into the league through 1983, just before his injury.
Andrews was awesome. The Falcons ran him into the ground. They did the same thing later with Gerald Riggs.
Toy Story 2 was ok
Okay this was an absolutely crazy game. Jim Zorn was always one of my favorite QB's back in the 70's and 80's. But the coaching by Seattle was so insane, and he GOT AWAY with so many great plays. Jim Zorn scrambles for a TD. Then they tried an On-Side kick, AND IT WORKED!! Then on 4th down they try a 55 or 56 yard Field Goal, but NOPE, they once again TRICKED the Falcons defense and the faked the Field Goal! AND AGAIN IT WORKED!!!!! This was a great game. A legendary Monday Night Football game!! Legendary, and overall one of the best games I've seen in a long time! Epic! Just EPIC!
Legendary and epic are 2 separate entities. This game was either. It was an entertaining game to watch played by 2 exciting, yet mediocre, teams. That’s about it. Epic? Not even close. Legendary? That’s funny
Better than the original Dave! Ahh the memories of whst I consider the Golden Age of the NFL!
Frank Gifford had a fantastic voice. His cadence, his insight were the unique voice of MNF. Now the voice doesn’t matter, but it should.
And he was a former player. Usually the play by play guys were people who came up loving sports, majored in communications, but didnt play much at any level. Gifford was an outstanding pro with a natural play by play voice who could also give ex pro analyst insight when needed...kind of like Ralph Kiner in baseball
Those were the days........Very fond memories.......
@@timburr4453 I think more players became play by play men back then. Like Joe Garagiola in baseball.
Seattle’s first time ever on MNF. Also, outstanding color correction. I doubt our TVs in 1979 all had the ability to display colors this well.
Jerry Glanville was the Defensive Coordinator of the flacons in this game
Ah remember this game so well, watched it with my future father in law down in Georgia when it aired. Great memories
And a classic, beautiful uniform matchup (which finally can be recreated today via throwbacks...though both teams should go back to these permanently). I really miss this era of football...miss this era of America.
Fulton County, early season at home could be an absolute frying pan. This was a mid season MNF game and had an electric atmosphere at kickoff. Love how Monday Night Football used to feel like a true event...a true happening.
Very memorable game with two newer to contention teams. It lives up to the Prime Time matchup and audience. Another definitive version of a game from this true classic era! Thank you Dave!
Dave, You are legend. I can't thank you enough for all that you do.
Bro... the ads! For an electronic typewriter, a car brand that doesn't exist any more... "the big Sony, the biggest TV screen in America" at 26 inches... crazy stuff
What a fun game this was! Definitely a classic.
What an incredible game!
A successful onside kick and a fake FG on the same drive. Gotta love the aggressive play calling by the Seahawks to steal the momentum
Those Falcon unis were awesome
This is a definite upgrade compared to versions I've seen elsewhere on here. This was the Seahawks' first-ever appearance on MNF, and they made quite the impression, especially with their trickery.
Great enhancement of an entertaining game 👍 Hoped the Seahawks could win a couple more early and make playoffs along with the Bucs
This video shows what a giant Howard Cosell was. Yes, he was egotistical, but he was asking tough, probing questions of both Dick Howser and Bowie Kuhn. "Do you not tarnish Willie Mays with your decision?" "Will you bar Billy Martin from baseball, yes or no?"
Remember when sports journalists were more than just stenographers for whoever they were interviewing? Rest in peace, Howard.
Yep they are just politically correct NFL fan boys. They would never say anything to make the league look bad. Boring
That famed Jim Zorn to Efren Herrera connection
An all time fake FG
Willie Mays and the Atlantic City casino operated by Bally's, a bit of trivia about the prosperous nature of the gaming industry in that city . . .
In the early years of casino operations, Atlantic City did quite well. A friend of mine had a sister living in that city, where she informed her brother that people were standing in-line to enter the casino, as the gaming floor was packed to capacity.
Only when a person left the building would the next person in-line be allowed into the premises.
Thanks for posting this. I was 15 year old in Montreal and I will always remember watching this game on ABC affiliate WEZF channel 22 out of Vermont. I was just getting into NFL around this time and became big fan of the Seahawks with this game. It's a real trip to be now 59 and watching this game 44 years later. Will never forget that Zorn pass to Herrera on field goal attempt and Cosell proclaiming "This is the kind of play, pro football needs"
I was a Falcon fan back in the day when they wore the Red and Grey with Black trim. Then they went to the Silver and Black. I hope they go back one day.
1:05:54 Greatest FG in Seattle Seahawks history.
I love the Falcons Monday night games at old Fulton County Stadium. It's rare they played an AFC team, Usually they were playing the Rams.
or getting rolled by the 49ers
Yep that stadium was a deadly frying pan early in the season at home...but night games there had a great feel and atmosphere. That bright lights "big fight" feel...sort of like Shea.
Thanks for uploading this! Cool to see it in such high quality! I remember watching this game as a kid. The fake FG was historic!
The Falcons had that one, great season in 1980. They appeared destined for the Super Bowl. But then their defense choked against the Cowboys in the playoffs. They never recovered.
Everybody thought they'd kill it in '79, too. Major letdown after '78. This game is pretty much how '79 went...
The Monday night theme used here should be brought back as the main theme for MNF as it was THE classic theme.
those Seahawk unis are dope.
What a tough finish for Bartkowski. Some excellent throws to bring his team to the brink of victory. Then, a very poorly thrown ball to end the comeback. He couldn’t get off the field fast enough.
Thanks for posting these great old games......
Thanks, Dave! I was at this game, so this is my first chance to see the MNF broadcast. Only 4 decades too late.
Manu Tuiasosopo and Sherman Smith were my Highschool Football coaches!
great game, great time to be a 18 year old
Wow! What a great game between to up-and-coming teams! All the way down to the wire! The Seahawks had some chutzpah! They were always “the expansion team that doesn’t play like an expansion team.” You could see both teams were on the verge of breakthroughs and Atlanta got theirs the next season. Part of me wants to say Bartkowski was greedy at the end, but on the other hand, he WAS playing to win. He just waited a split-second too long to release that last pass.
37:20 was the 70s advertising at its best
Back in those days Zorn had a '74 VW Bug he'd drive to the Kingdome for home games. On the way he'd swing by his buddy Largent's pad and give him a lift to the game too. Different times back then. Total old school stuff.
And they drank milk. Together before a game
I remember liking the Falcons uniform when they added more black in their colors, but they should switch back.
I miss hip pads. Noticed Doornik was still rocking them!
That TV spot for 'The Battle of the Network Stars" reminds me of one year the TV participants, excitedly celebrating their victory, poured champagne over Howard Cosell's head, wrecking his toupee; whereupon Howard expressed his outrage from that antic. lol
Thanks so much for your videos. It is so fun to hear the old MNF crew. I hated those Falcons uniforms back in the day, but they sure look cool now.
The Falcons should go back to these uniforms and never switch back.
💯%🍺😊🏈😁🤙👍
Wouldn't matter cause the Helmets and jerseys and other equipment just wouldn't match. I hate the small shoulder pads and sleeveless jerseys.
You've got to love the colors of the matchup of these classic unis. The NFL shouldn't have allowed these teams to change their uniforms. Imagine how much more colorful and memorable NFL history would have been if they didn't.
1:06:16 Throwing to a field goal kicker qualifies as inventive. Zorn to Herrera for a first down.🏈
Amazing the Falcons were in FG safe and still let the kicker run free through the middle
Zorn! I always thought that would’ve been a great name for Decepticon jet: Starscream, Skywarp, Thundercracker, and ZORN!!!
Happy Retirement DR Dan Doornink
Seeing Zorn under center rather than the shotgun, especially on 3rd down, is kinda throwing me off. Seems like these days the only time a QB is under center is on first down. If I remember right, back in those days no team ran the shotgun except for Dallas and they were the only team that did it for years until it caught on throughout the league. And they only ran it on 3rd down. It's just weird seeing Zorn under center on 3rd down. I gotta remind myself that I'm watching a game from 40+ years ago.
RIP Wilson Faumuina
14:58 "Thunder foot " Weaver back to punt
Back when football hasn’t been woked to death
Alfred Jenkins!
1:43:55 "Manny Tee-ahs-a-soup-o", just a rookie then. Wouldn't take long before they all knew how to pronounce Manu Tuiasosopo's name.
I still have the Seahawks McDonald's 29 cent glasses.
It would have been fun to hear Howard Cosell say "I predict in the distant future that both of these teams will lose to the New England Patriots in the final moments of two Super Bowls."
Yet another case where teams' old uniforms were better. Falcons should go back to the gray pants.
Remember this game well. When the Falcons went up 14-0, I thought they were going to get on a roll. Then the Seahawks outplayed , outsmarted, and out tricked them, 1:06:15. I thought how can a new team like Seattle be better than Atlanta, who went to the playoffs the year before? After the game I came to the realization that the Falcons just were not going to be any good in '79.
Bruce Jenner!! Oh I mean Caitlin lol
A game Seattle should have won by 2 TD easy. Turnovers, miss TD passes.
Ok, why is the Falcons helmet at the 50 facing the wrong way ? I don't think I've ever seen that. Not saying it's never happened, but it just seems strange 😁
I said that to myself every time I saw that field on TV. Left facing helmet. I also believe every other helmet on a field pointed right. Too funny.
Suggestion. Next time get a Timebase corrector. Especially if you're digitizing from tape. Then, don't mess with the frame rate!! Making everything "60 fps" doesn't make it better. That can actually ADD artifacts. Sports broadcasts were 60 fps already. Just let the framerate be what it is.
I'm not working with videotapes. All of the enhancements I do are from game DVDs that were digitized from tape recordings by collectors over the past 25 years. And as for artifacts, half of the enhancement process I do is running those recordings through Topaz, which eliminates compression artifacts, denoises, and sharpens up the picture. It also doubles the framerate from 29.97 to 59.94 with interpolation, which definitely makes the game motion much more fluid. I then take that enhancement and bring it into Resolve and get to work on contrast and color. Take a look at the before/after shots that I post on these games - any artifacts that may be introduced (minimal if any) are insignificant compared to the usually massive upgrade in quality otherwise.
I might have to dub in the best MNF theme of all time Johnny Pearson-Heavy Action. This theme was boring..
Whoa. Confederate battle flag at 30:53. That really was 44 years ago.
It's a crime that the Falcons don't still wear these red helmets & jerseys. Jerry Glanville and Deion "Never Met an Egotistical Nickname He Wouldn't Give Himself" Sanders did *nothing* for the franchise, so get over the whole black-is-sooooo-bad-looking nonsense and go back to this classic Falcons look. These unis may not be associate with resounding success, but at least they're not a reminder of blowing a 25-pt lead in The Big One.
Who is the third commentator?............Cosell, Gifford and who?
Fran Tarkenton
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 --wow. okay, I never thought of Fran.......I think his time was short on MNF, right? My favorite three was Cosell, Giff and dandy Don........
That an original thought
Carl Eller as a Seahawk. Ugh.
