- Widely hailed as the greatest Monday Night Football game of all time this classic battle deep in the heart of Texas features one of the greatest single game performances in football history. A 4 touchdown 199 yard rushing effort by The Oilers' dynamic rookie running back Earl Campbell who seemingly nearly set the Astrodome's artificial turf ablaze with his cleats in the process. But the Dolphins wouldn't merely concede the game, countering with a epic 23-for-33, 349 yard outing by their legendary QB Bob Griese.
One of the most epic games in MNF history
Still the greatest MNF game of all.
First Dolphins game I ever saw on TV, was 11 yeas old; haven't missed many since. Great game!
Of all. I had dolphins season tickets that year. This game broke my spirit.
One of my favorite childhood memories is watching this as a 10-year-old Houstonian. Thank you so much for letting me relive it.
I'm I the only one who loves these old commercials too?
Even the commercials were better then. That one Jimmy Stewart was in was just a classic.
No you are not alone
Not at all. The commercials reflect the era. Love 'em.
Who doesn't love the old ads? Part of the enjoyment of watching MNF. (and the babes of the seventies--natural w/no tats)
@@bernieudo4399 oh yeah, don't need no tats.
I love how Cosell was so knowledgeable about every player whether they were a start or nonstop. He made every player seem like a star
very astute observation. It mattered to him, the old blowhard. Miss Howie very much.
Cosell was the first "Hype" man. But, what makes him the best was his knowledge and relatability with the players. The players had a lot of respect for Cosell and realized his hype helps the game and helped make stars out of guys we didn't really know. If Monday Night Football came to your town, it was BIG and it was BIG because Cosell made it BIG! Howard was for the "novice" fan that needed a reason to watch. If Cosell wasn't in the booth in1970, Monday Night Football probably wouldn't have made it.
Most cogent observation. Howard really did take his job seriously. As an attorney it would be expected that you knew the facts & law to effectively assist a client. To not come prepared to Court would be pure negligence. Howard came to each broadcast fully prepared. He had to. He knew he "didn't play the game," so he had to earn both the players, owners, & public's respect. Some hated him because they felt this blow hard didn't belong, but most accepted him & respected him because he took the game seriously. That's why I enjoy watching these MNF games. This was football at its best. Hard hitting. No excuses. No stoppage of game action.
It just seems to me the game was played with heart back then, todays player seems to just go through the motion, i guess the money out weigh,s the heart today
And Cosell was a play-by-play man. His display of knowledge was the precursor to John Madden. There is a difference with announcers today. They are not as knowledgeable about the game, don't bother to explain things as much (or can't), and the sideline reporter is some Barbie Doll just repeating what the coach told her, instead of having some insight into what's happening on the field.
The more of these old games that show up here, the closer they drive me to tears--happy ones that is. I can never get enough of these games. I was never against Tennessee getting a franchise but they should have left the Oilers in Houston. Sure they did have some disastrous 1-13 seasons but they were loved to no end. The NFL Nazis are beyond human trying to withhold these from the public. GRRRRR!!!
Much respect to all the old Houston Oilers fans out there!
Thank you sir
That theme song needs to be brought back next year. It screams Monday Night Football in any era
I'm a lifelong Cowboys fan, but Earl Campbell was one of my all time favorite players. Loved watching him run
Growing up a typical kid in Houston, I was able to go see the Oilers play on 2 or 3 occasions. This game happened to be one of those games. My dad and I and two other friends had the time of our life watching this game but my dad ALWAYS said he wished he could have heard Howard Cossel call this game. For almost 40 years now, he has asked me about how to find this game on the "internet". Well, today... Thanks to you Bran Stark.... I've found it. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful memory and what was the birth of Luv Ya Blue....
AWESOME! hope you and your pop have watched this great game many times in the past year, and had a ball reliving it.
.
The most raucous, electrifying MNF EVER!!!!
I'm glad when these videos include the original commercials, those are almost as fun as the game.
Giff, Dandy Don, and Howard were THE MNF team no other has come up to compare even to this day (2019) a class in their own right. Thanks so much for the post.
Thank you for the upload. Love all football games from the 70's, especially MNF. Sorry to hear about your trouble with the No Fun League. They don't even broadcast any of these games ever and even now when they had a big announcement about that they are posting 96 "Classic" NFL games starting in August, a vast majority of them are more recent games that aren't really classic. These games bring back great memories of staying up late when I was a kid to get my football fix. I was born in 65, so all these games from the 70's take me back. Thank you again!!!
That's because the NFL doesn't want fans making comparisons between real football from this era and today's glitzy, overhyped, over-scripted, and drag-ass product.
You gotta love Howard-the cadence of his voice, really picks everything up. I loved it when the crowd was going crazy, and he chimes in with, "listen? they're playing the song" (oiler fight song)-classic line. In '78 I purchased two authentic NFL football jerseys-they both were active in this game. Nat Moore-I had the home Dolphin jersey, and I had the Pastorini home Oiler jersey. Hell of a coincidence to be watching this on RUclips in 2018, and see both players (and teams) of the only two authentic NFL football jerseys I ever had in my life. By the way, this was Thanksgiving week, it culminated for me with my getting married five days later on Saturday, Nov. 25th. On T-Giving, at 23, we gathered to play our annual Turkey Bowl game (tackle). Two years later, playing in the Turkey Bowl, I tear my right ACL-what was I thinking right?
I loved when Howard called him Dante Pastorini An irony is the guy who wrote the excellent Oilers fight song wrote it for the Dolphins first. He tried to cash in on it so he did one for the Oilers at a slower tempo but essentially the same song.
Sadly none of the original broadcasters are with us anymore 😭
I wish the Oilers still existed
I came for the football and stayed for the commercials. It's almost heartbreaking to watch some of these ads for GM.
Commercials make u feel young again this shit is d greatest sorry I got excited
Crazy stat- the 1978 Dolphins were the AFC's highest scoring team (#2 overall, 12 pts behind Dallas). Yes, they scored more points than the high-scoring Patriots or the mighty Steelers.
Interesting stat. I know Bradshaw led all QB's with 28 TD passes in 1978.
This is incredible it helps me relive my youth and you get to watch players play at real speed. I would love to see a Oj Simpson game or Jim Brown
Man those old commercials bring back some good memories wow!!!
What great uniforms the Dolphins and Oilers had in 1978. Today, Yuk! Tennessee Titans, have you ever seen anything more hideous. Maybe the Bengals since 1981.
Lots of great memories of these old games. Wish we could watch them all
RIP Ed Brandon, ABC Channel 13 weatherman from 1972 to 2.007.
I was at the football game that nite, and was 7 at the time.
Following the evening news, "Price Is Right", followed by a 1-hour programme.
@Paul Nguyen(open): Also... RIP Marvin Zindler.
Howard sang Bob's praises for ten years, by far Howard's favorite player.
47:23 Tell me that is not one of the greatest commercials of ALL TIME. What better times were the 1970's.
Houston needs to become the Oilers again. Retire the Texans name and uniforms. Purchase the rights from Tennessee.
Nothing against Tennessee having a team but they should have left the Oilers in Houston. As you say, restore the name---& find a better QB than Brock Osweiler
It would be cool to at least see the Texans play one game in the Astrodome in old style Oilers uniforms. It probably would never happen due to the expense of renovating the dome for just one game as well as installing turf but the dome is just sitting there picking up dust; you might as well use it.
Mark Muffs Bud Adams wanted a new stadium
Lets.....Negotiate
Yes i agree
I actually like the Texans name and uniforms though, Texans have started to gather up too much history now to go back to the Oilers it's too late now.
Has anybody caught a fight that broke on the stands during this game? Only asking because my grandfather went to this game and knocked some guy out for blowing too much smoke from his cigar because it was bothering my grandmother. It eventually escalated to a big brawl between my grandfather and his friends and the cigar guys friends. I’ve heard because of this incident it was the only NFL game that had to stop due to fighting in the stands. Please let me know if you heard of this or seen it in this game. I’m trying to see it for myself.
Poor ole blind Bob. Didn't have laser eye surgery back then. ;-)
LOVE YA BLUE! Most exciting era in NFL history was those late 70s Oilers teams under Coach Bum!
This was a hell of a game.
I was at this game, what a night it was, the crowd was wild, they gave us all a pom pom when we entered the dome. Earl Campbell was incredible.
Howard, Frank & Dandy Don. When Monday Night Football mattered & the nfl WAS cool...
Unfortunately, this game was minus one Dandy Don Merideth.
These teams played in a rematch in the first AFC wild card playoff game, on Christmas Eve in the Orange Bowl. It was a dud compared to this Monday Night classic. The Oilers dominated and won 17-9, in the only playoff meeting ever between the teams. Houston would go to two straight AFC championship games, losing both at Pittsburgh. Miami didn't return to the AFC championship until winning it in 1982 and 1984 -- their last two Super Bowl appearances, both losses.
I lived in Houston at this time, was a freshman at Aldine High School, have NEVER seen a city raly around a team like Houston did, Great Memory!
Obviously this night belonged to Campbell but people forget Delvin Williams was also a great back for the 49ers/Dolphins.
Thank you for including the commercials :-)
I used to love that old Monday Night Football intro. It used to fire me up for the game.
Probably the most famous MNF game ever played. Houston was coming on strong. Miami veteran, smart, well coached. Their window was slowly closing with a aging QB, suspect defense, and adjusting slow to the major offensive rule changes. The Dolphins still won games, and had a dogfight with the Patriots just to make the playoffs.
Houston had been close to reaching the upper level of the AFC, but got short circuited in '77, but that allowed the draft position for Earl Campbell. Once Campbell put on the Colombia Blue, it was ON n POPPIN'! After this "classic" they met a few weeks later in the Wild Card Game. Miami had a real chance to go to Super Bowl XIII in the Orange Bowl. The Oilers, with their "traveling" stout defense held the Dolphins down and won. Then went to New England and knocked out the Pats. We all know what happened in Pittsburgh, but the '78 Oilers were one of the most exciting teams in the era. If the Steelers would have slipped up, the Oilers could have got 'em, and maybe a Lombardi Trophy.
As for this game. The NFL at its very best! Both teams playing at a high level, the crowd was "fantastic". Even with the volume turned down, it was still LOUD! Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell (no Dandy Don that night) were at their professional best.
I was 10 and I was so hyped before and after this game. I stayed up all night talking to my younger brother. We fell in love with Earl Campbell that night. We didn't know much about the Houston Oilers. They weren't featured in Baltimore much, but after that game we started to see them all the time. It may have been the schedule, but we used to get Steelers, Redskins, and Eagles. But, someone I guess said that team in Houston needs some East Coast love. Hahaha
Thank You for posting the "Signature" game of the Monday Night Football series.
The Oilers without Dan Pastorini and Earl Campbell shocked the San Diego Chockers in the 1979 playoffs 17 14
Nat Moore should be in the Hall of Fame if he isn,t already.
how bout that opening;you dont get that today.classic
Could have been the best game ever on Monday Night Football
I love the IBM commercial about what is clearly a new office innovation, a computer.
THIS WAS THE BEST MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL EVER UNTIL THAT NINER RAM GAME 1989.JOE MONTANA THREW TWO 90 +YARDERS TO JOHN TAYLOR AFTER TRAILING 14 TO NOTHING TO WIN 30/27.
Actually the 1983 Redskins-Packers match-up was arguably the best MNF game, with the Chargers-Bengals game the previous year being a close second.
I think this 1978 game between MIA and HOU still ranks as the best MNF game of all time.
Yesssss sir. I watched this a couple weeks ago on YT (after not seeing it since it was played) & now back again. Can't get enough of these!!
Mark Muffs REAL FOOTBALL,UNLIKE TODAY,HUH! I WAS IN EIGHTH GRADE WHEN I SAW THIS ONE,THE REASON I REMEMBER THE NINER RAM GAME IN DEC, 89. IS BECAUSE THE BROADCASTERS WERE TAKING A POLL ON THE BEST MONDAY NIGHT GAME OF ALL TIME.THE OILER, DOLPHIN GAME FROM 78 WAS ON TOP OF THE POLL. UNTIL THE NINER RAM GAME WAS OVER. AT THE END OF THE GAME, FRANK GIFFORD SAID, THIS GAME HAS TO TOP THE OILER, DOLPHIN GAME. IRONIC, ON A NIGHT WE TAKE A POLL FOR THE BEST MONDAY NIGHT GAME EVER.
Awesome upload
At 46:22 Great GMC commercial with quality control technicians. Followed by one of the classic Lite Beer from Miller commercials-note the difference from the Miller Lite commercials.
great upload.. tks alot ....and keep em coming....love howard frank and Dandy Don!
Thanks for the appreciation Stephen. And will do. That being said you better enjoy these vids while you can because the NFL is giving my channel hell at the moment trying to get most of them taken down. I stall them as long as I can so that I'll get to share these games with as many of you as possible but greed and politics always seem to win out in the end so...I honestly don't know how much longer they'll all be up here.
This is probably the greatest MNF game of all time. Two quality teams, rabid fans, and HOF performance by the Tyler Rose.
Where was Don Meredith on this broadcast????
MNF in the old days...Dad...Bro...was our guys time night
MNF was the match
The crowd was the fuse
Campbell was the atomic bomb
This is some retro ass shit!! GO DOLPHINS!!
Campbell was a very hard runner.
At 52:55 a Buick commercial focusing on their lineup of Turbos. I cannot believe that the Buick Century had a Turbo option, okay it was the Coupe version, but that’s still pretty much an old man/woman’s car. Great concept thought-love the Turbos. Wonder if this is where the amazing Grand National started?
Howard Cosell said one reason he enjoyed this game was the two man booth of just he and Frank Gifford. I like MIA. But this classic, The Sea of Hands and The Epic and Miami as well as the Super Bowls they lost are still though to watch. A funny thing is they followed up this classic with a 9-6 Oiler win the next season on MNF. Bonus @1:32:40 rubbing it in on the kicker lol
It boggles my mind that sportswriters won't stop conflating team success and individual greatness. We have a way to compare players: statistice,. Aaron Rodgers is head and shoulders above Tom Brady, both by traditional stats and advanced metrics. Si's .......
70’s commercials are so believable!
For classic sports movies and TV shows, plus Crossover TV and other compelling original programming, go to SI.TV........
For Sale: Zenith System 3 television. It's 44 years old. Just come get it out of my garage. Thanks!
At 1:14:45 Opel commercial, haven’t seen one of those maybe since when this commercial originally aired? Forgot that they were a German car sold through Buick.
Tv ad. Jimmy Stewart for Firestone tires. Today it'd be Tekashi69. What progress America has made.
What would be the point of bringing back the Monday night theme, when MNF is just another game these days.
I was at the game with my family!
Players were so much better back then, but maybe the rules now stop the good game.
Player,s back then played for the love of the game, todays player,s play for the money in the game, no heart , just go thew the motions, its a sad game today
One of the best ever, but Dolphins could of won
I was 9...remember it well.
I was 14...like going back in time...we were lucky
Good old times
19:05 - That's Robert Pine (CHP Sgt. Joe Getraer), co-star of the NBC police procedural drama series "CHiPs". He's also the father of Chris Pine ("Star Trek" series)
The 'Sarge' from "CHiPs" who always picks on Ponch.
@@ScorpioBornIn69 Speaking of "Ponch"... I was with my parents and kid brother in Houston this same evening, as we took the early part of Thanksgiving week(schools in the South were out all week, as opposed to just Thursday and Friday here in the Northeast) to visit with my uncle and his family in Houston.
We went to a mall somewhere in the northwestern suburbs, and ate at a Picadilly that night; as we were walking through the mall a bit, I saw Erik Estrada on a CBS musical special on one of the TV sets from one of the TV stores.
Even in SW Louisiana, we often heard of the Oilers' exploits; I think my Dad, when we got back to the hotel room, was watching this game on Channel 13.
Who title this don't they know home team in any sport always referred to last.
the best Zenith ever

January 12, 1967??? It wasn't even a Sunday. Oh, Howard.
Right date.....WRONG YEAR!!
Howard must have been hitting the sauce again.
Its a shame the dolphins havnt had a team incontion since dan the man marino was seting reacords, the 70s were great, the 80s were ok went back to back super bowls in 84,85 washington with riggins was to much to handle, ofcourse the next year the 49rs were just unstopable with montana
23:19 that looks like an awesome toy!
When this game was played I was in my early teens and, as such, I never paid much attention to the "voices" who broadcasted the games. But, watching & listening to this MNF game some 40 years after its air date, I can't believe what a horrible play-by-play guy Gifford was in his day. His misidentifying of players is nearly constant throughout the game.
