I grew up in Florida and the first season I watched football was 1972, their undefeated season. So exciting. I was 8. They won it all again the next year, when I was 9. I'm 57 now. Somehow I thought they would have had a third by now!
The other most exciting thing I remember from this time period was the Apollo missions-- the last one was a month before this game. I thought we'd be going back to the moon again too. I guess there's still hope for one or the other, or both. But hurry it up, guys. I'm not getting any younger.

RIP Don Shula. He coached in playoff games in four different decades, but SB VII was his crowning achievement. Only the crazy Sea of Hands play two years later in Oakland kept him from a possible three-peat. A decently-close second place on Shula’s list of great wins came 13 years later, when the Dolphins handed the ‘85 Bears their only defeat.

And to add - some of the games played in the unbeaten season was done with a back - up QB !

Bob Griese was a smart quarterback. Along with Coach Shula, he always had bag of tricks up his sleave. That along with brute power up front lead this simple ball control offense like a General. Especially against the Vikings a year later. His induction into the Hall of fame is well earned. The Dolphins had some real bruisers on the offense line. Kutchenberg and Little obliterated the fast but undersized Vikings defensive line in Super Bowl viii.

The Dolphins defense put on the best Super Bowl performance ever. The 14-7 score was deceptive. It was for all purposes a shut out, though Garo Yepremian's sudden career change to passer nearly ruined it all. What looked like an impressive win became a narrow escape for Miami. An imperfect win to seal a perfect season.

It is very instructive to watch the SBs as they evolved. Miami played pretty good in the previous SB against Dallas but got soundly beaten 24-3. This is a more solid team led by the super amazing Czonka, Kicck, Griese, Warfield and all the others on offense. Their defense is incredible!! Undefeated is the greatest!! RIP Coach Sam Wyche. Can be seen holding the clipboard as a backup to Kilmer in the first half. It was announced about 2 hours ago that he had passed away. I wasn't expecting it as I was watching to research how Miami had improved from the previous year. Shula was great, but he also had Arnsbarger, Schnellenberger, and Monty Clark. They found LT Wayne Moore on the 49ers taxi squad(hiding under the name Solomon & listed as a TE) and C Jim Langer (an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State who had been cut by the Browns) and solidified an O-Line into the best ever. They found DE Vern DenHerder at little Central Iowa College and elevated Bob Matheson to starting LB creating a "53" D. Those 4 little changes made a big difference and gave the NFL its only undefeated champion. It should be noted that one other change was Shula learning from how Dallas had used Dwayne Thomas's speed to hurt the Dolphins in SB6 and replacing Jim Kiick (my hero who has suffered tremendously from severe football-related head trauma) in the starting lineup with Mercury Morris.

But this was the AAFC (All-American Football Conference), not the NFL (which later absorbed the AAFC Browns). To this day the NFL does not recognize the 1948 Browns perfect season as a NFL accomplishment, believing AAFC play was not up to NFL standards. • @Wolfwolveswolf

Garo Yepremian was a top of the line Kicker!
And I'll tell you a secret not many people know about in the 1972 Super Bowl.
That famous Garo Yepremian pass in the 1972 SUPER BOWL, it was actually all intentional/planned.
You see- the Dolphins were actually feeling bad for Washington, and it was due to the fact that it was that far along in the game and the Washington Redskins couldn't score any points.
So having sympathy for the situation that the Redskins were in, the Dolphins knew it was up to the Dolphins, to help the Washington Redskins get a few points to bring their spirits in the game up, and raise their hopes in the game also.
So having sympathy about it also, Don Shula told Garo Yepremian right before he was to make that one kick for points late in the game. Yes Shula told Yerpremian to instead kick the Football off of one of the Redskins players, so the Football would then bounce back to him- Yepremian (as that is how good and skilled Dolphin Football Players are at Football), and that Yepremian then catching the Football, was to act as if he was trying to pass the Football, but really to just toss the Football real easy to one of the Washington Redskins that was closest to Yepremian (so the Redskin Player would surely catch the Football and not drop it)- and so the Redskin Player could then be able to easily run in for a Redskin Touch-Down! So the Redskins would finally show they had some points on the board that late in the game, and also feel happy and hopeful, and as if they were still in the game.
Not many people know about this like I said, as Dolphins being the best Team in NFL Football- they like to be humble about things like this.

The Redskins weren't just another Super Bowl loser in 1972. They were an exceptionally strong team. The Skins were 11-3 and wrapped up the division early. They lost the last two games of the regular season after Allen decided to sit some starters including league MVP Larry Brown. During the playoffs Allen's defense surrendered just 6 points including a 26-3 drubbing of the defending champion Dallas Cowboys. There was legitimate reason the early odds makers had the Redskins favorite in this game. This all makes the Dolphins victory more impressive.

He said they left the stadium a little early with Miami leading 14-0. Then they heard the commotion as Mike Bass returned the Yepremian goof pass of all time and they headed back to watch the end. We'd park on some guy's lawn and walk about a mile, eat sketchy hot dogs, cheer for the actual real live dolphin (as in the fish)🐬 jumping in the end zone pool. Those were simpler times. It's surreal watching the broadcasts as an adult! I was fortunate to meet Larry Cszonka, Jim Kiick, and Swift at a public appearance and, to me, it was like meeting the president! For a little girl from Miami, there will never be a greater highlight than the Dolphin's perfect season.

@Jack D the Redskins almost blocked the punt at the end. That was our best chance. Disappointed Sonny missed game, but little surprised Charley Taylor did not play well. Kilmer was terrible.
