As someone who lives in Los Angeles, I won't stand for these outrageous lies that these sketches are perpetuating: Griffith Park and the 5 are nowhere near the beach. You have to take the 10 all the way to west LA, past the 405 to get to the beaches. If you follow their directions, you're going to end up in Glendale, and they're all going to be wondering "whuuuuuuuyoudoin'ere?"

My family and I recently learned about the Californians. We are from California. We have since started talking to each other like this for fun. From my 7 year old all the way to the 45 year old. We even have a huge mirror that we like to finish the skit with. We have so much fun with it.
This documentary really helped me learn the language and culture before I moved to California. This is a must for anyone visiting or moving to California.

@@wombatcube That's part of it, but talking about streets and highways like they do in the sketches is a very Los Angeles thing. It's not even a southern California thing, it's specifically just the LA metro area.
@@wombatcube- In LA (west of Downtown) from almost Long Beach up into The (San Fernando) Valley, whenever people arrive to a location, especially if they are late, they proceed to tell the person they meet the route they took and frequently that other person then responds with an alternate route that would have been faster (in their mind). Also, if someone says "I've gotta go, because I have to drive to _______.", they will be asked which route that they are planning to take and then, if that is not the best route in someone else's mind, they will then suggest an alternate route. It also occurs between people who have seniority in LA vs people who are new. In 2007 I had a friend call me via Skype from LA... I was living on another continent, but had lived in LA a number of years, and he was asking me for suggestions on which route to take to get to the meeting he was going to. It is soooooo LA/SoCal.
It’s a real thing in L.A. It’s like talking about the weather anywhere else. It’s just something to talk about. When you live and commute in L.A. and spend 2-5 hours of every day in traffic, it ends up being a big part of your life lol
@@Mandapanda. The 405 is only a regional interstate. It branches off from I-5 in centralish LA County, only to merge back like 100-150 miles later in southern Orange County. It sort of parallels I-5 and the Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1), running between them.
As a native born and raised Californian (Los Angeles), these skits just kill me. I wonder how folks who are not aware of CA view these skits. For us, they are pure GOLD and so accurate.
I’m in Maryland so I can’t talk about the accuracy of direction giving, but definitely love these skits. Reading other Californian comments sounds like the directions is very accurate.

My family is from California. And it truly is! My uncle called my dad at one point and started giving directions on the phone to my dad and he just started laughing because it reminded him of this.
I didn't realize how Californian I was until I had a two minute conversation with a guy I did not know and we covered traffic and alternate routes on how to get from the San bernardino mountains to L.A. , wine and weather. After the conversation I proceeded to look for somewhere to see my reflection lol.
I tell young people all the time that studying Geography in school is important. So you want have any problems knowing where you're at and how you got there.
She's my favorite part of these, but it's close. Her playing "Brad, the male gard-ner..." cracks me up every single time, without fail. Also the way the says "Marina del Rey". I've lived in southern CA almost my entire life & have met dozens, if not hundreds of people who are basically the real life version of her character. It's obviously way over the top, but also somehow hilariously accurate.

The accuracy of this sketch is so fantastic. I live in Los Angeles, and no joke, all of us talk about our drives and the streets we take all the time. I find myself just doing it in random conversations at restaurants with friends or at a party, then remembering this sketch, and just laughing to myself. It’s so spot on.
I just had a conversation with a friend about whether to take the 101 to his place or the 170 to the 5 to the 118 and had a debate on whether the traffic on the 101 was bad enough during that time of the day to justify the 7 miles extra of the latter route. Yeah... traffic and routes are a common discussion here.

That's where I learned that Michigan & Wisconsin people explain where they are from by showing you their hand. And they had a funny accent and used different vocabulary.

@hi! I meant the directions they give are right cause I follow them. It's the accent that we don't use, that "valley girl" twang. But yeah, we interperse the occasional "dude" and of course "the" before naming a freeway. There's so much that's funny about "the Californians:" everybody has the same shade of honey-blond hair, the mirror to express vanity, check out Jeremy Renner's bounce walk to the "Californian rattan chairs."
As a Southern California born and raised, the freeway grid is like a tattoo on your brain from the time you start getting your directional bearing and driving. It's the imprint, so explaining it this way makes sense.
Fred Armisen is one of the most outlandishly brilliant sketch comedy actors and writers ever. He was the highlight of this cast, and then went on to greater things with Portlandia.
Okay, the sketch is funny. But Fred Armisen is terrible. Unbearably awkward. This is one of the few sketches I can watch with him in it and not feel incredibly uncomfortable. Portlandia is just cringe comedy. I have to leave the room when it’s on because it makes me so uncomfortable.

As a Californian it confirms that most of the country thinks that California stops once you get outside of LA. There are funny parts but it always seemed like a low effort skit that wasted some of the most talented cast members of all time by having them make funny faces and mug at the camera while saying predictable drivel for 3 minutes. Definitely one of the more hit or miss recurring sketches of this Era.
That's the Keanu Reeves surfer parody voice! After the Bill and Ted sequel the surfers couldn't take the embarrassment anymore and dropped it. As someone who's spent endless hours trying to get through LA during peak rush hours this was hilarious, almost made me cry. Didn't because..because LA traffic. Supposedly, Fred had practiced his first line to Bill the "what are you doing here?" in his regular voice. But when they were going live, he did it like he did it for the first time ever, and Bill & Kristen looked at each other like wtf? and laughing. And it's so funny knowing that and seeing this now because you can totally tell Kristen and Bill are trying not to break.

I just had a conversation with a friend about whether to take the 101 to his place or the 170 to the 5 to the 118 and had a debate on whether the traffic on the 101 was bad enough during that time of the day to justify the 7 miles extra of the latter route. Yeah... traffic and routes are a common discussion here.

As a Southern California born and raised, the freeway grid is like a tattoo on your brain from the time you start getting your directional bearing and driving. It's the imprint, so explaining it this way makes sense.
Fred Armisen is one of the most outlandishly brilliant sketch comedy actors and writers ever. He was the highlight of this cast, and then went on to greater things with Portlandia.
Okay, the sketch is funny. But Fred Armisen is terrible. Unbearably awkward. This is one of the few sketches I can watch with him in it and not feel incredibly uncomfortable.
Portlandia is just cringe comedy. I have to leave the room when it’s on because it makes me so uncomfortable.

There are funny parts but it always seemed like a low effort skit that wasted some of the most talented cast members of all time by having them make funny faces and mug at the camera while saying predictable drivel for 3 minutes. Im from Aus and I caught up with a friend - somewhere in in West Hollywood - and this happened! I was heading back to Venice and Lincoln Boulevarde and the freeway entered the conversation - serious stuff too lol. I laughed, it was great.

THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS is in an interview Bill Hader talked about Fred making him break the most. He cited this sketch as one of those moments. Supposedly, Fred had practiced his first line to Bill the "what are you doing here?" in his regular voice. But when they were going live, he did it like he did it for the first time ever, and Bill & Kristen looked at each other like wtf? and laughing. And it's so funny knowing that and seeing this now because you can totally tell Kristen and Bill are trying not to break.
I remember that interview. When you hear it for the first time, it catches you off guard and it is so funny
