This was actually my introduction to Nostalgia Critic back in 2010 and knew I had to scroll the screen down or turn down the volume because I knew I wasn't allowed to watch inappropriate videos. 🤭
Even though I kinda like this movie, this review was always one of my favorites, it's so hilarious. Especially the original ending of him chasing the Casper Jpeg. I'm so glad it's back.
Couple things. 1. I will admit the Casper movie has a special place in my heart, for nostalgic reasons. When the movie came out I was about 5-6 years old and it was one of the first family movies I remember seeing it so while I know the movie isn't great I can't help but have a certain love for it. 2. That ending sequence running to chase Casper not just in a Ghostbusters costume but also having fans chase after him with you was just a lovely thing to see.
@@DisorientedWandererI was thinking the same thing, imagine mowing your lawn or going to get the mail and you see a man in a ghostbuster uniform screaming "Casper" when no one is around.
Oh thank you sweet Jesus for giving us the original ending back to this video! Doug chasing a semi transparent jpeg of Casper through a crowded convention center will always be one of the greatest nostalgia critic moments!!!
Yeah I’m surprised those haven’t been covered. Funny enough I didn’t know this movie existed but knew about the other two since I saw both when I was a kid.

so glad i downloaded the ORIGINAL over a decade ago. This still isnt the complete original version of his review. In the video I have, when Doug steps out in the ghostbusters costume, it plays the ghostbusters theme song which i understand why today its still replaced with generic music but it adds that little extra in the original clip.
I kinda love you can just barely hear the Ghostbusters theme in the background of the end. I’m glad they got this back out, it was always a favorite older review.
I remember being _really_ young when I watched this. I am now a huge horror fan for independent reason, but knowing that the fucking Crypt Keeper is in this, meaning this is my first introduction to the creepy cadaver himself is the scariest thing
I actually had to skip parts of the movie after Casper's uncles returned home to find out somebody's inside and mess with Dr Harvey. I didn't know who The Crypt Keeper was either and I just assumed it was his "decayed face" in the mirror while the celebrity cameos were the trio when they were alive.
00:57 NC: Yeah, but to be fair, the only reason it's so scary is because it's so bad. 20:53 Casper: Well...wasn't it so bad it was scary? NC: Actually, it wasn't even that bad.
Wait, so if you die and use that potion to come back alive. Would that mean there’s two of you. One physical dead body and one alive body brought back to life from the ghost body?
Just imagine the aftermath. Cop: "Kathleen Harvey?" Kat: "Yeah...?" Cop: "I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but we found your father's body at the bottom of a cliff. They really need to tear down that bar..." Kat: "What? Dad, are you dead?" Dr Harvey: "Not that I know of." Cop: "... What."
But why are you uploading this? Like what is the behind the scenes reasons for this upload? I'm not hating, my late mother took me to see it like 8 times in the theater when I was a kid. Best times. This is random though.
In Poland this movie is repeated a lot on tv and it's important part of my childhood. It has flaws and your review is great and funny even after so many years, but I still like to watch Casper at least once a year
This is one of my favorite early Nostalgia Critic episodes and the Ghostbusters ending was a laugh riot! 😁Thanks for putting up this video and hopefully you get to upload the original edit of Garbage Pail Kids!
@@jadedheartsz The Garbage Pail Kids review had the ending that was a spoof of the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Doug sung as a turd to end the review but it was removed I guess for copyright. I'm not sure what the original cut was for Eight Crazy Nights because to me that looks like it had never been altered.
Christina Ricci later had negative distain towards the movie in later years as she didn't want to work on anymore kids movies. Claiming the plot didn't make sense that she's in love with a ghost who never ages and is a cartoon. Even recently, she felt her performance in the movie was terrible. One of the reasons why we didn't and never will get a sequel with her in it. Thanks, Ricci... Also, Russell Harvey, CEO to Casper's distributiors, Harvey Comics, hated the movie for too dark with un-child friendly humor. (According to the director, the line "There's a girl in my bed. Yes!" Offend the Harvey family, and felt it was out of character for him to say.) He also disliked the backstory as he felt it was dark and pointless to give to a character that was so innocent to many. (Even though in the 40s, Casper tried commiting suicide because he hated his life as a ghost and wanted to forget he's dead before realizing he's already dead.) This led Harvey Entertainment to buy the movie rights to Casper away to 20th Century Fox where they made two direct to video reboots for Power Ranger's Saban Entertainment. But in 1999, Universal and Amblin still had the rights to their Casper and could make a proper sequel with Balto and Prince of Egypt director, Simon Wells, to wrote and direct with or without Ricci and Bill Pullman. But because of the poor reviews and underwhelming video sales for the direct to video movies, Universal lost confidence on a sequel or another live action Casper movie ever since. (Although back in 2022, it was announced Peacock is developing a Casper TV series that's said to be inspired by Riverdale (🤢) with a darker, grittier approach, and a teen Casper falling in love with a girl in high school much like the original movie. (Why does every Casper adaptation has to give him a love interest? Why can't he just be a "friendly" ghost and not the "flirty" ghost?)
Also why would she hate the movie? She WAS a kid why would she be bothered about being associated with it? Though it WAS weird the popular kids’ prank seems like no one would even do in real life
@@oooh19 Exactly. It was a good balance. Regardless if you found the jokes funny or not, you can't deny they're at least used sparingly. The emotional themes are still strong and still has good weight on the deep and mature stuff. Mainly with Casper as a character halfway in the film. (It's very reminiscent of the 40s era Casper shorts.)
@@oooh19 I think it's because she got the part for Kat Harvey in 1993 after finishing Addams Family Values and figured "I could do this next one." But after finishing Casper, she moved on to more mature roles and more adult originated movies. Maybe being a teen through her 20s made her very bitter towards her youthful self.
Honestly although I’m not a big fan of this movie I do like the idea of Casper, The Ghostbusters and Tales from the Crypt all being in the same universe. I can just imagine The Ghostly Trio, Slimer and the Cryptkeeper meeting up occasionally for a game of poker and some beers. 😂
Yeah… That was what made one of the most hilarious moments of the review. Though given the state of the whole copyright thing and many RUclipsrs trying their hardest to avoid getting their videos claimed by someone abusing the system, it is somewhat understandable. Alternatively, a remix of the theme could have been used, but then again, what’s to say it’ll wind up falling for the copyright claiming abuse trap by someone abusing the system?
"And fortunately, she [my mom] was the exact same size as a twelve-year-old girl!" Well, people in the old days did marry and have children at younger ages than they do now.
I watched this with my kids last year, and they pointed out an interesting fact: If the dad died falling in a hole, and his ghost was later turned into a physical form, wouldn't that mean that his old body is out there in a ditch, just waiting to be discovered?
Ever since I discovered this channel I’ve been watching your videos every single day. I’ve seen every episode at least 50 times over. You helped me through some of the worst years of my life and continue to fill me with inspiration and laughter! Thank you Doug, rob, tamera, and malcom
Nice, the movie that released on the day I was born, for the series which I coincidentally (and only briefly) became a fan of as a little kid (from renting VHS tapes of old Casper cartoons from Blockbuster).
I've always wondered why they took out the ending at one point. Recently watched the original version on another channel as it's still out there, but glad they brought the original back officially. Still I wonder why it was changed.
When I was a little kid, I was very sick in the hospital. Thats where I saw this movie for the first time, and it made me feel better while I watched it. So I will always love it for that.
Ah the old days of "Knows what he is doing but still amateur film". That's what feels so wholesome. Also, what happened to this wall? I miss this wall.
Lots of flaws with this film but I still enjoy it. But something I always had issues with is the dad being freaked out when seeing Casper. You would think when being an afterlife therapist he would have dealt with seeing ghosts before unless what he was doing was a sort of scam. 🤷🏻♂️
In a 2022 interview, Christina Ricci said that she considers her performance in this movie to be *terrible* adding, *"I was thirteen. There was a lot going on in my life. Everything was very difficult. I was just always annoyed, and I just don't think I tried very hard, to tell you the truth."*
I really think for the next Nostalgiaween Doug should take a look at the other live action Casper movies (and possibly the tv series it was spun off from), A Spirited Beginning, a prequel that completely ignores the lore and backstory of Casper when he was alive, and Casper Meets Wendy starring Hillary Duff. It’d be cool to see his antagonistic version of Casper make a comeback.
I saw this in the cinema with my parents as a kid and at the time I enjoyed it. Actually it is one of my fonder memories from my youth. I can acknowledge it isn't a good movie but it is a good memory for me of times I will simply never get to experience again. My parents were great and I will always love them.
So it's been about thirty years now, right? There is who more bottles of that potion that just happen to not be full. You mean to tell me that they can't pour some of one into the other?

If you still had the original rushes or maybe some audio separation software to try and take the music out (RipX, for instance), it might help... but whatever. You made do with what you have.
One thing I can say about this movie ... a LOT of the music is gorgeous. James Horner did a wonderful job and I still listen to a lot of the soundtrack around Halloween because it's so beautifully haunting. In fact the track "One Last Wish" is so gorgeous it makes my hair stand up when I listen to it even today. So if anything I CAN recommend more people listen to the soundtrack. I like Casper. I watched it a lot as a kid. The house was designed to look like an Antoni Gaudi house. I remember there were 2 sequels. I saw the second one and the third one on VHS from blockbuster. Never saw them again.
