I have a 2023 Pro-4X I purchased June 2023 with now just over 1k miles currently and I'm loving it. I honestly stopped at the Toyota dealer first to buy the moon rock Taco but the dealer had a "market adjustment" fee of $5k dollars and when I told them I wasn't paying it the salesman told me I was lucky I wasn't there a month earlier (May 2023) because the markup was $10k over sticker. I didn't feel lucky so I left, went down the road, and drove home with this Pro-4X! Thank God! I love it!

The Frontier takes a page from the sales-leading Tacoma and betters it with a rugged FULLY-BOXED FRAME, rear DISC BRAKES, an ALL-STEEL BED and more HORSEPOWER/TORQUE -- instead of the Tacoma's FLEXY OPEN C-CHANNEL frame, rear DRUM BRAKES and cheaper, weaker and crack-prone PLASTIC/FIBERGLASS composite bed (the latter which requires replacement as a whole when damaged).
Don't forget the screaming 7,000 RPM redline!!! Other midsize V6 pick-ups don't even come close when compared to this latest iteration of the solid and proven VQ series engine.

It will be interesting to see how well they hold value vs Toyota that seem to do really well historically speaking. I like Nissan and I'm glad they are finally getting around to making more competitive looking trucks. I would like both Toyota an Nissan to have larger side mirrors. I've driven all three generations of Tacomas back-to-back with the (2005-2022) 4.0 & new 3.8 Frontier. Every generation Tacoma V6 has been a bit underpowered. The 2nd & 3rd gen Taco also display inherently sloppy handling on the road, possibly due to their open C-Channel frame (except under the engine). There's a world of difference: The Frontier feels like a sports car compared to the Tacoma -- especially in terms of handling and braking. The current 4Runner also displays the same at-the-limit handling sloppiness as the sales-leading Tacoma -- but at least the 4Runner has a much more comfortable and composed ride (perhaps a benefit of its' fully-boxed frame???). However, both feel unstable and a bit dangerous at the limits during emergency maneuvers. It's easy for them to get disheveled and flustered. Both Toyotas may be great off-roaders, but the Taco feels bouncy, loose and unsettling during normal driving. Not so with the Frontier. It's no wonder our local news & social media posts periodically cover stories of Tacomas (all generations) flipping over, sometimes resulting in fatalities. In the past two years alone, I've seen at least 7-8 accidents involving current and previous generations Tacoma flipping over on both slow-speed surface streets and freeways. This is nothing new to me, as the older '90s 4Runners were prone to flipping over, which resulted in many deaths in our state, back in the '90s-2000s.

Sounds like you kind of expect trucks and SUVs with a high center of gravity, to be planted like a sports car. Logically, any vehicle with a high center of gravity will be prone to flipping over from mild to extreme sudden movements of the steering wheel. (Especially in emergency situations which is hard to maintain control in such situations anyways) as for the "sloppiness" in handling you mentioned, yes that is also a common characteristic of body on frame vehicles. The frame has nothing to do with it, actually. It's the geometry of the suspension, vehicle weight and distribution, general dimensions, steering rack/gear and its ratio utilized for feed back, and many more aspects. Hope this helps.

@@donaldirvin8008 I loved my 4R overall. We bought the Pro model for the resale and more supple suspension. We don’t off-road more than forest roads, so we knew it was overkill. What we didn’t like about the Pro was the nosedive and lean in corners. It was a chore to drive on windy, long road trips - constant steering corrections and giant downshifts to maintain 80mph. The cruise control wasn’t useful, as it would aggressively downshift to maintain speed. The JBL audio was decent enough, but more on the meh side. Navigation sucked. And the brakes…it needs a much bigger brake package. Other than those minor gripes, it was awesome. The Frontier has a more comfortable seat and better tech. Excellent headlights, brakes, tight steering and suspension. It feels like a perfect combination of our current 2018 Subaru Crosstrek and our old 20 TRD Pro.

Looks and performance are great, but the back seat bench is super uncomfortable for passengers on long trips. For me, long trips are defined as any trip over an hour. I currently own a 2012 Frontier Pro-4X and was hoping that Nissan would improve the rear bench seat, but no such luck. Also, besides the colored trim, the interior door panels are basically the same and finally, they moved the seat pouch to the passenger side instead of having one on each seat. Therefore, I am looking at a Tacoma or a Titan. Regardless, the upgrades were due.

Ok this is a huge oversight and may have to get fixed on the aftermarket. There are no wheel well liners in the rear. That's a huge pain in the ass for anyone who lives with snow and large vulnerability to rust when salt/snow gets splashed up under the wheel well

Apparently, at least according to my wife, I have an unhealthy obsession with my '23 Frontier PRO-4X. I would have taken the time to argue but the lure of mud and track was too damned appealing. I drove a Chevy 2002 Silverado for 315K miles and swore I would NEVER get a Japanese truck. Now, by Thor's Hammer (Mjolnir) I swear to NEVER buy "American" again. The fact that the big three build mostly in Canada, Mexico and in Buicks case...CHINA FFS! My Frontier, built in Mississippi, so she's a southern-bell! Sorry off topic. This is hands down my favorite truck. I still have the 4x4 Beater of a Chevy for a back-up truck...but my god Nissan finally hit it out of the park! Also these are a lot cheaper than a Taco as well as having better drivetrains and a fully enclosed frame!! Maybe I am obsessed.

I just bought the 2023 pro X fully loaded and was able to beat the advertised price with the mark up before the new year. I saved $3000.00 I was looking for the Toyota TRD and went inside the cabin, my head was almost touching the top. My legs were high, since the floor is so high up, my legs were uncomfortable. At 6'2 225 pounds, cramp is the word. Test drive and it felt like a boat. I would say Tacoma is the best for off road but forget about everyday use. When I tested the Nissan Frontier, what an amazing feel, very quiet cabin, more than 8 inches of head room left, legs where at a natural sitting position, not high up. The ride was amazing like being in a car, you can't tell you're in a truck. So, if you want your truck mainly for off roading and don't care about being cramped and bouncing around, then yes, the Tacoma. If you're using for everyday use and like me not ever going off-roading, get the Frontier, you won't regret it.

Fully boxed frame sounds great, but what did they do about the frames rusting and breaking in half due to a section of frame that held water? My friend had a beautiful king cab with no body rust, but the frame broke, and no help from Nissan.

I liked the design but I started having issues with it when it was about eight years old but ONLY sixty thousand or so miles. I traded it and went with Subaru, and now I have a Tacoma Sport which I LOVE. I will say the Frontier is definitely a good looking vehicle and they seem to have tried to put some dents in Toyota's mid sized truck market.

Hi Ben, you said that we cannot say anything bad about the truck. Well, I can point easily two things I do not like about the Frontier - a lack of rear AC vents (a must feature if you have young kids and live in places like AR, TX, FL) and you cannot completely turn off the "nannies" (if you really want to off-road, you should be able to disable them completely).
Again, I agree with you that this is a nice looking truck, it has a better sits and powertrain than the Tacoma, and it is an overall a better truck. But Tacoma is a very old truck and it is a sales leader in this segment regardless of its shortcomings. I believe that says a lot about Toyota Tacoma.

The Frontier is an awesome truck, Ive driven my Pro4-x for 2 years now. I wouldn't say its way better than the Tacoma TRD PRO. Its more in line with the TRD Off road, esp out of the box. The TRD Pro is one step above the PRO4 X, but I think Nissan will probably come out with something to match like the PRO4X Nismo to answer. I think the comparison is very similar to the Mustang and Camaro rivalry.. and the Frontier is the Camaro.

Yes that’s the real comparison but keeps in mind the drivability of the Nissan are above the the Tacoma even the trd pro because the Tacoma still have 275 hp , the transmission it’s out of tune and the seats are worst , but off road speaking the suspension that trd comes are better for off road. I did my research trd pro comes with the ridiculous mrsp price like the zr2 so i choosed 4x and didn’t regret. The gear and transmission has partnerships with Mercedes and Aston Martin.

at :35 are you saying Nissan has a naturally aspirated engine? Good review overall. Look forward to seeing your review of the new Colorado and Canyon. So far, compared to the Nissan: some of what I see coming on the new Canyon AT4 ( I feel this model is similar in design to the Pro 4X ) Canyon likes: having a power passenger seat, storage in tailgate , more modern interior with larger info display, more torque for engine. Dislikes likes on Canyon AT4: miss having a rail system, led lights and outlet in bed; no headlight controls on stalk ; back seat appears only to allow bottom seat to flip up vs Nissan back also folds down. Turbo 4 cylinder lasting as long as the V6 in the Nissan is a question. Canyon may have better interior led lighting but really no info out on that yet. Overall the Nissan is a good basic pickup design. I hope someone reviews the driver's seating position of both trucks, simply because this is one of the major complaints of the Tacoma, that and poor power.
