You never pull it tight to start, leave about a foot slack and then tighten, it's the friction that holds it tight, movement of vehicle could loosen holding 👍
Depends on what you are hauling. Big bales of hay pull it tight first, it will tighten a lot more. If you leave slack there will be too much in the ratchet.

Need 3 wraps on mandrel to maintain adequate friction. Less and it may vibrate loose.
