Haha I watched this in bed.. I was like crap I have to put shorts on and go outside to try it… I didn’t want to wait till tomorrow morning ha! It works perfect, so glad I saw this video! Mahalo for sharing!
Yeah, all these methods where you take the whole thing apart and wind it up in some goofy fashion look cool but are just not a good way to go through life with ratchet straps.
Been doing that for years. I'd add one step - you do want the free end to be shorter than the hook end, but not by more than a few inches. You'll save yourself several wraps (bit of time) by making them almost the same length. (Edit: because he made it look *really* easy, and it usually is, but when you fumble the thing, you'll wish you had fewer turns to get it right!) But the best part of this is the beginning 'undo the locked strap'. Learned a long time ago the best way to use a ratchet strap is to start with the strap loose, pull the free end to take up the slack, *then* use the ratchet.
I have the ‘web’ end just about as shorter than the ‘hook’ end by the lenght of the hook itself. With a knot tied in he ‘web’ end, my ‘lock’ hook end clips just over that ‘web’ end and all are tucked neatly away! 😂 Had ratchet straps since I bought my truck. Bought the truck then drove to the store for the straps. Never looked back!😂. Since my loads have always been secured. 😅😅
I just learned this method from this video, and another method from another vid, both this morning and both done about 10 times each to learn their nuances and tightening and adjustability... Found the other way slightly more adaptive, while this way has fewer wraps and the awesome 90-degree moving hook trick, yet this way isn’t forgiving for a quarter inch adjustment at end to get precision tightness and so needs to be unrolled completely to make any adjustment. This way looks better at the end but the other way is also ok looking, but also when taking them out to use on a trailer or something, I’d rather throw only the strap roll, not the whole body of the ratchet mechanism on the ground. This way requires a dropping or throwing of the ratchet mechanism, which isn’t that big of a deal but makes the strap-roll method better. I love how there are multiple methods and they each have benefits over the other, so anyone can pick their pref. ❤
I use the same method but I place a magic marker line on the tail of the strap so I can get the perfect twirl length every time. I align the mark at the twisting barrel and then ratchet until the barrel is full. Then I wrap the excess just as you do and the hook always winds up just right after wrapping. Easy-peasy
That’s funny, I was going to include that in this video because I do that myself, but decided to cut that out. If you look close you can probably see my marker lines.
I have watched these attempts to help with rachet straps over the years.....BUT hands down, this is simple elegant and very clever. Thanks for sharing. I am off to try this on mine. Hopefully I do not have to dig a bunch of holes.....
Doing some research before I posted my method I found there was a popular method that clearly wasn’t functional but looked cool. Glad you liked it and didn’t throw out your back retiring ratchet straps!
I have (had) 100's of ratchet straps all jumbled together for years, and have looked for better ways to store them quite a few times, and this is the easiest and fastest way to store straps that i have found..... Thanks man! 👍
I have something coming up where I may need to purchase hundreds of ratchet straps and when I'm done with them I couldn't imagine storing them any other way. Glad you like my method!
I usually don't "like" videos when the presenter tells me to "like" the video because no one is the boss of me (I'll be the one to decide if the video sucks or not, thank you very much), but I'll make an exception in this case because this is good knowledge.
When I came up with this idea and started doing it everyone that saw me do it had their minds blown at how clever it was. Seems we have quite a few people out there who were just as clever. Go us!
Everybody else showing how to store your ratchet strap might as well delete their videos cause it doesn't get any simpler & easy than this!....Thanks for the video, works perfectly...
I'm the only person I know who likes to separate the winch from the strap completely when storing. I find that it makes it more convenient for putting straps on a load as well
Your not the only one. I store mine separately as well as I also find it faster in my use cases. I use 14' by 1" straps most of the time and I take the strap end and just wind it around my elbow and hand like wrapping an extension cord. I then fold the wrap in half and stick it in one of the bins in a Dewalt screw organizer that I've designated as my strap case. Then I place the ratchet on top of the strap. It's been a great way to store rachet straps for me over the years. Each strap has its own bin so it doesn't get tangled and the organizer holds 6 straps plus 2 extra bins for bungee cords. Whenever I need to strap something I've got a nice compact kit. And if ya ever need more straps you can stack organizers and lock them together as well.
Yeah, definitely a few guys in the comments who share your sentiment. That’d be a nightmare for me because I have enough trouble keeping track of my straps as it is. Plus if I know I just need two and only want to bring two along I can just grab and go. Sounds like a great method as a base station of straps though!
Jeez, another way of folding rachet straps! Who would have thought there were so many, when until recently, I did not know any of them. This is the best one I have yet seen
I tie a simple overhand knot at the end of the strap to keep it from pulling all the way through the ratchet. Saves me from fumbling around trying to feed the end of the strap back through the ratchet, usually in the dark.
Good video. I too have been doing this for years. But I add a step of individually placing each strap into a zip lock bag, not completely sealed so the strap can breathe. Then put it in a box to prevent accidentally pulling the 'rip cord'
Good idea. I've always wrapped them and then take an elastic cod (the ones with the plastic ball on them) to tie it all off. Then when I use the ratchet I've got something to tie the tag (leftover) end so it doesn't flap in the breeze.
I've got a few of those but always wanted them to be available to use elsewhere. I used a double sided velcro strap to accomplish the same dual purpose for a long time.
Hate diggin out a mess of straps and DO NOT let anyone help put away mine . I do as said here but, Pull the strap to the half way point and then roll it. Keep them lubed with a wd40 or other as the operate SOOOOOO much better and bind up less. And try to avoid dropping them on hard surfaces as it knocks them out of whack and you have to repair or toss them. And when putting strps on a load , when you think you have enuff, throw another one on
As clever as I want to believe I am, I've always just had a bag of straps that were fairly well organized.... on occasion I would have a spaghetti situation... This is fantastic. I've ALWAYS wanted a method like this... Thank you for this life tip.
Bravo! Excellent video, sir! You’ve made my hour of flipping through bullshit shorts worth it for once. Practical knowledge delivered posthaste with a dash of humor midway through (and to button it up at the end). My faith in humanity is (almost) restored!
This seems like a great idea. I will try it. I've been pulling the straps halfway and wrapping them but I don't have a good method to secure them. It works better than wadding them up but not perfect. Here is my tip. Tie a knot in the strap so it won't accidentally pull out and you won't need to figure out how to restring it.
I got an old motorcycle tube and cut it into strips about an inch wide and use it as a big rubber band around the rolled up strap. When I’m using the strap I just put the strap through it so I don’t lose it.
crazy that I figure this method out by myself like 4 weeks ago and your video surfaced on my feed! But yes it is the best way to store them without the spaghetti mess! Still picked up some tips from your video and from others comments, thanks!
I've been calling it the "Bensing Method" for years when I invented it, then I researched making this video and was like "oh." Funny how the human mind works!
I put velcro on all of my straps in order to store them neatly like this. Your way so much better. Now I will look cooler than everybody else with their silly stupid ratchets.
I love these simple genius solutions to things. Of course, I just stick each ratchet strap in a separate Ziploc bag. Sometimes I even write on the bag how long the strap is.
Certainly works, but I like the elegance of it all being self-contained. I make little stickers to put on the side of the ratchets for the lengths, too. Having some method of knowing how long the straps are is so useful.
Murphy's Law. Yesterday I had to wind up my ratchet strap and today I found this video. I use a similar method, but not the hook. This will be a great help. The only problem is that it won't help with the 2" cargo straps.
The only thing I've been doing differently is wrapping with the ratchet open. It works best for me because the longer straps wrap quicker, this should work for the odd ball ones that you buried
Just a little better than the way I do it except that I always make the hook end barely longer than the loose end so there is the fewest number of winds.
This is amazing! Thanks for showing us this. I had a thought about minimizing the slack of the free hook. Once you figure out how much to pull the webbing end through to get the ‘perfect bundle’ you could mark the webbing at the ratchet with a sharpie, and a silver sharpie for black straps.
If the hook hangs off the end,try leaving the ratchet in the release position and see if that works before burying it in your backyard. I find doing it that way usually works better anyhow as it doesn’t take as many wraps to stow it.
Nice I will try this! I've been using winding amusing stretch wrap as per a Jimmy Diresta. These have always been a love /hate thing! Mostly hate since they are always a knotted mess!
It's an honor to even have Jimmy Diresta mentioned on my channel - haha. Looked up his method. definitely nice, but seems awfully wasteful. Though with those bigger straps that hook differently that he uses in his video, my method isn't applicable.
Very cool! I have been wrapping up my straps similar to that, but I cut a thin rubber band out of a section of an old motorcycle inner tube and secure the wapped tie down that way. I like your idea a lot more!
RUclips is actually getting into brains these days... I was sorting my ratchet straps in the garage today because I have /way/ too many and *thought* "I should look up a video on the best way to wrap them"... and here we are with the suggestion... Some of my SmartStraps have a hook and loop extension on the end of them which makes it really nice, but that's only 4 straps out of ~20.
Yeah, those self contained ones are great and if you don’t own any ratchet straps I’d say just buy those only, but alas so many of us do not and have to figure this tricks of the trade out.
I've been doing this for years. Except I use this magic stuff called Velcro that keeps everything "hooked" together. As for that "Bad" strap, just fold the hook back on itself. Then keep wrapping. By the way, you can purchase a roll of double sided Velcro for pretty cheap.
I used to use the same method with the velcro, but I kept losing them and came up with this method. Velcro is definitely great, but this is completely self-sufficient.
@@gerikbensing I sometimes use the Velcro that intended for cable management for electronics. The Velcro is attached to the strap. "Kind of hard to loose it that way." was my thinking, not condemnation to your comment. Also, I'm definitely not saying your way is bad. I did watch the whole video. The other thing that I do with the Velcro is use it to tie up the loose end of the strap so they don't flap in the wind while I'm driving. I wish I could share a picture. You have a new subscriber by the way. God bless.
The problem is when you go to use the strap. Usually youll want the slack free so you can toss it over your load, then walk to the other side with the ratchet end and put the loose end in the ratchet to tighten. With this method you have to undo the whole thing, then bundle up the loose end, then toss it. Also the hook hanging out the end is perfect, hanging straps by the hook for storage is much nicer than shoving them in a box. Same goes for chain binders, chains, etc.
I've noticed a few people seem to like to throw the hook over to the other side. I never considered that being all that desirable to throw the whole thing over as I'd rather not smack up the vehicle or what I'm hauling if I can help it. Pulling it to the right length has always been how I like to do it. To each their own though!
@@gerikbensing Don't throw the hook, I mean if you keep the ratchet separate and wrap up the slack separately you can just toss the slack over, nothing hard attached. Won't damage anything and makes it way easier with 1 person to secure a load. e.g. 11:50 on this vid: ruclips.net/video/VeqMIgrkroE/видео.html Of course your way works well when you aren't using the straps exclusively for big loads on a trailer though!
@@JD-ub5ic As someone who still can't fathom separating the ratchet strap parts, this makes a lot of sense when doing it how you mentioned. I'll add that to my "head to head" challenge on all these different methods of storing and using strap I'm learning about.
I take the strap portion and fold it in half twice, then tie it in a loose knot. Not only is this very fast, but a strap/rope that is in a knot, cannot knot on it's own. It also unties and is ready to go in half a second. Your method is nice, but I like mine. :)
Simple, quick, the best! Thank you! (Inventor or not.) Utoobuser206"s suggestion, below, to fold the ratcheting strap in half makes it even quicker. Also, I accordion-folded my longish hook strap and the tail end of the ratcheting strap, to keep the package tidy. Good to see you rescue your buried strap, haha!
Glad you like it! I invented it independently from the other people who seemingly invented the same thing as me when I went to do a little research before releasing this video. 😅 Great suggestions as well!
If you're ultra neurotic you can put a pen mark on the strap after you find that perfect length to tuck the other hook so you can find it fast every time.
I use mine so much that I do not bother to wrap them up I just dump them in a pile in my truck tool box. I will at least put the ratchets on one side and the straps on the other but thats about all the organization needed for ratchet straps! This looks like someone with some kind of OCD or control issues lol but it is for sure a neat and tidy way to store them if you have all that time to spend each time you use them.
yeah I'm a bit like that too. I specifically use 2 daily and these live on the passenger floor of the truck unwrapped. The rest are in a bucket in the back. I reckon it takes less time to sort them than to wrap them up like this but I'm gonna give one a try.
Having one or two it’s definitely not worth the effort. But separating them seems maddening to me having to rethread them every time. I’m starting to wonder if a head to head test of a few different methods can settle this. 🤔
@@gerikbensing I tell you it would be hilarious. The guy trying to sort the messed up ones would be f-ing and blinding and the wrapped guy would just drop the strop.
I have bag of straps in my car, and if the OP thinks there is anything remotely easy about untangling the Barrel Of Monkeys caused by unwrapped straps, then he must live in some other universe.
Harbor freight has a $5 fabric tool bag that they zip top and handles. I can get the best ratchet strap storage you can get for the money. Super easy to throw in the backseat of your truck and pull out to strap your load down.
The algorithm just blessed be me with this video. All hail the algorithm so this man can prosper.

I am also laying in bed watching this. However, I'll likely wait until next time I use my straps to forget this awesome technique 😅
That's a man whose been inspired. Heck yeah!
Kudos to this best method!
This method permits the long end to remain threaded through the windless correctly.
Yeah, all these methods where you take the whole thing apart and wind it up in some goofy fashion look cool but are just not a good way to go through life with ratchet straps.
Locked out of the house I thought I’d tidy the van. Procrastinating on RUclips but now I have organised ratchets! Cheers
Glad I could help you pass the time and get something done!
Long ago, I started out as a "crastinator" but with many years of hard crastinating, I'm proud to say that I'm now a "Pro" crastinator.
I’ve always done the same thing but I never thought about the hook securing the strap at the end. Game changer!
I went many years not realizing the solution hiding right in front of me, welcome to the new game!
Same for me. Great idea
You’ve done the same but not with the hooking? So you’ve rolled up the ratchet strap before, amazing.
Thanks for the sweet hook tip! Can't wait to try it out!
Thanks for not overdoing it with the humour, it was just perfect.
Perfection!
Been doing that for years. I'd add one step - you do want the free end to be shorter than the hook end, but not by more than a few inches. Definitely true - finding that sweet spot not quite half way to get the perfect wrap. PERFECTION.
Very nice!
Just did a set of straps like this. I make the sides similar in length, but otherwise it's a great way to store them
I have the ‘web’ end just about as shorter than the ‘hook’ end by the lenght of the hook itself. With a knot tied in he ‘web’ end, my ‘lock’ hook end clips just over that ‘web’ end and all are tucked neatly away! 😂

Easy-peasy

Marking the strap is a great idea
Just ran and tried this. It worked perfectly! Sharing this with everyone!
So glad this was helpful for you! It’s saved me so much headache the next time I go to use my ratchet straps.
This solves a problem of the ages.
I've done the same but never thought of using the hook that I buried under the strap to help secure it. BRILLIANT!!!! Thanks for sharing!

Ty-Wrap One-Wrap hook and loop material works great to secure your straps after wrapping them as shown in this video.
I used to use something similar to keep them secured. I like that stuff as a easy way to manage the excess strap when in use too
This is amazing! Thanks for showing us this.
I had a thought about minimizing the slack of the free hook. Once you figure out how much to pull the webbing end through to get the ‘perfect bundle’ you could mark the webbing at the ratchet with a sharpie, and a silver sharpie for black straps.
I actually mark some of mine like you say but cut that tip out of the video to simplify things. Great "advanced" technique to perfect the method!
If the hook hangs off the end,try leaving the ratchet in the release position and see if that works before burying it in your backyard. I find doing it that way usually works better anyhow as it doesn’t take as many wraps to stow it.
That's a clever thought! I'll have to give that a try for my straps on the naughty list.
One of the most useful videos I've seen yet! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Though with those bigger straps that hook differently that he uses in his video, my method isn't applicable.
good tip . i have always done similar but yours method a little better
Glad I could help you improve your storage method!
Just bought some doors and frames. I have 4 loose straps in my back seat to go and try this on now👍
Well that worked a treat, and no need to bury any straps 😁
Nicely done!!
Very cool! I have been wrapping up my straps similar to that, but I cut a thin rubber band out of a section of an old motorcycle inner tube and secure the wapped tie down that way. I like your idea a lot more!
Seems like quite a few people used the inner tube method before they stumbled upon this video!
Better than my current method; ill be switching. 👌🏻
Welcome to the club
Pretty slick. Very similar to wrapping aircraft cargo straps. (C-130s). Those are 5000lb with flat hooks.
Definitely a situation where keeping your straps organized is essential. Cool to learn that!
Neat trick, and neat strap. Tomorrow I’m off to the garage to sort out my straps!
Good luck, hope your don't have too many "dead" straps
God bless.
Thank you I always make a mess when wrapping them up.
Won't damage anything and makes it way easier with 1 person to secure a load.
e.g. 11:50 on this vid: ruclips.net/video/VeqMIgrkroE/видео.html
Of course your way works well when you aren't using the straps exclusively for big loads on a trailer though!
Knot bad, knot bad!
Finally some quality recommendations!
Thanks for the video!
Genius
Use to use a rubber band for about same wrap method
Bravo!
I used Velcro wrap straps for the longest time until I realized the secret to go without
Simple, quick, the best!
If you look close you’ll see mine on a few of them. Cut out that tip for the benefit of the average person.
Ah. Never thought about turning the hook into a training hook! They always come undone and that’s it!
Well, I know what I’m gonna be trying to do later on today. Good video.
Great idea!
Glad you think so!
Harbor freight has a $5 fabric tool bag that they zip top and handles. I can get the best ratchet strap storage you can get for the money. Super easy to throw in the backseat of your truck and pull out to strap your load down.
Combine that bag with this method and you're just the Ratchet Strap Man!
Thank you for this. I will pass this down and around
Please do!
Good tip. I've been doing it this way for years.
Great minds think alike!
Just came across this video, that was genius!
We all have moments of it. 😉
Very good. Excellent even.
Thank you
Excellent video structure, excellent tip. Thank you!
Only works for toy ones with hooks. Big ones with compound shaped hooks can't be secured this way. I roll them up and keep the handle separate.
For sure, I have no clever solution for the big ones yet.
Perfection.......and then resurrection!
That just got an audible chuckle out of me. 🤣
Best strap storage I have ever found. Thank you.👍👍👍🇺🇸🙏🏽😎✌🏻
Holy crap! This is brilliant! Thank you! I'm rewrapping mine tomorrow!!!
I've stopped what I was going to do, I'm heading for the boot of my car to sort out that mess, thanks.
Really awesome video, content and delivery. I love your idea. 🙂
Thanks so much!
I’ll give this a try, thank you.
Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that! Thanks so much!
