CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) lays down the ground rules for Fight Club. First and foremost, you don't talk about Fight Club.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this darkly comic drama, Edward Norton stars as a depressed young man (named in the credits only as "Narrator") who has become a small cog in the world of big business. He doesn't like his work and gets no sense of reward from it, attempting instead to drown his sorrows by putting together the "perfect" apartment. He can't sleep and feels alienated from the world at large; he's become so desperate to relate to others that he's taken to visiting support groups for patients with terminal diseases so that he'll have people to talk to. One day on a business flight, he discovers Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a charming iconoclast who sells soap. Tyler doesn't put much stock in the materialistic world, and he believes that one can learn a great deal through pain, misfortune, and chaos. Tyler cheerfully challenges his new friend to a fight. Our Narrator finds that bare-knuckle brawling makes him feel more alive than he has in years, and soon the two become friends and roommates, meeting informally to fight once a week. As more men join in, the "fight club" becomes an underground sensation, even though it's a closely guarded secret among the participants. (First rule: Don't talk about fight club. Second rule: Don't talk about fight club.) But as our Narrator and Tyler bond through violence, a strange situation becomes more complicated when Tyler becomes involved with Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), whom our Narrator became infatuated with when they were both crashing the support-group circuit. Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club was directed by David Fincher, who previously directed Pitt in the thriller Seven.

Mm, not really, he said only, not at least.
@@spectrefzier4626 you didnt get it
The club didn't existed back then, he never fought alone (with his alter ego) inside the club
My favorite rule is the last one: "If this is your first night at Fight Club, you HAVE to fight!"

It's the scariest rule of all too. Like going to Swimming Lessons for the first time, and being PUSHED into the DEEP END.
No better way to learn than forcing you to adapt quickly.
Yes
Genius film. Original, shock value, plot twist, never got ruined with pointless sequels and remaking
The book has a sequel from 2015 in comicbook format "Fight Club 2". Didn't read but from what I heard is not that good. The book is really good
Not yet
“Never got ruined with pointless sequels” There’s two of those pointless sequels…
Not yet anyway give it time hollywood will ruin anything and everything for the sake of money.
@@Lunk42 “Gone with the Wind: Harlem”
Fight club is essentially about breaking the rules. The first 2 rules of fight club were meant to be broken, but to be done so with discretion so as to invite new members that could be trusted. It's a rather clever reverse psychology tactic.
I think it's partly true. Tyler wanted the club to grow a little but not so big that he would lose control of it. It makes me wonder if that's why Project Mayhem came around. The guys are all pumped up and want more fights and more members. They refuse to calm down or listen so Tyler decided on a massive bombing campaign to placate them. I would NOT be surprised if stuff like this happens in real life where the terrorist leader lets others go on a very quick but quiet killing spree involving only 2 or 3 victims. This calms them down until he can cook up a new plan. If you're in a room full of angry sociopaths, you probably have to let them vent their frustration or you are seen as a lazy leader or worse, they topple you and pick someone more aggressive.
Largol33t1
wow.
How do you know all this?
Thank you!! Someone gets it!
So sad and pathetic that 20 years later in 2019, liberals and main stream media have total contempt for alpha male tough guys and praise & idolize beta male / soy boys.
@@largol33t1 I think the whole premise of the movie was men searching for an identity and meaning in a society that strips men of their identity and uses consumerism to replace any other purpose in life. I think he started fight club to give men an identity and purpose other than through consumerism. I think all of this was in-movie, not just meta or outside the movie's world. I'll believe that the first 2 rules were an ingenious trick for the fight club. However, I also see it as a way of deepening the meaning of the fight club via exclusivity. I guess on a lower level Project Mayhem was Tyler's invented purpose to placate his club. However, I think it was a natural extension of his philosophy to attack the consumerism that destroys men's identity and purpose.
But I think to say that Project Mayhem was nothing more than a way to placate his group kind of misses the point the writer was trying to make. Although, seeing that the logistical/psychological layers were cohesive with the grand ideas layer in the writing really shows the quality of writing. I just wish the writer alluded to destruction of any database backups as well as the main databases to show that blowing up banking data centers wasn't just a half baked idea.
Also, I wished there was a sequel that explores the consequences of destroying everyone's debt. I think Mr. Robot really countered the idea of wiping everyone's debt to rebuild society better. Mr. Robot was about, "Ok, so you wiped everyone's debt, then what? Do you really think you have answers to all of the world's problems?"
So, I want to see what the writer was thinking makes a better society than a consumerist society. Of course, many people have proposed utopias over hundreds of years. So, I wouldn't expect the writer to answer how to build a completely better society from scratch. I would expect consumerism to be a part of a realistic society. However, I would want to see what the balance would be between consumerism and... fightism? How would they interact? How can men keep their identity and purpose in a partially consumerist world? Then maybe the movie would be a real blue print for men in today's society instead of a rallying cry.

So how did fight club become so popular if no one was talking about it?
later in the movie, tyler says too many people have been talking if its becoming so popular lmao
Because the point of the first two rules is to teach the members to start breaking rules.
Fight Club quickly becomes Project Mayhem. Tyler doesn't want people that follow the rules.
That's true. There was a scene where Tyler says "I see a lot of new faces... Which means you broke the rules!" Then he starts cussing and shouting at them and again hammers in the golden rule: "You do NOT talk about Fight Club!!" Hilarious!
max springfeild People disobeyed the first and second rule; which he intended for people to do.
At the end, when Tyler and the Narrator are about to get on the bus, the Narrator calmly flicks his cigarette away while Tyler chucks it as hard as he can. Moments like these show how great the movie really is. The narrator is the personality that follows society and as such is calm in disposing of his cigarette. Tyler however is a personality that doesn't care about society and as such is more aggressive in his throwing of the cigarette. Amazing.
Thomas Bekkerman i like how brad pitt consistently flung his cigarette in this manner throughout the movie. the details!
Remember when Tyler tosses his beer after the drunk bar fight....the narrator calmly puts it on the grass by the house on paper street
Furthermore, since they are the same person, and since that person was currently smoking a cigarette, after Narrator throws it out Tyler had to follow. He just followed in his own way.
For example Project Mayhem happened because Narrator hated "Society" - it was his deepest and darkest wish, that Tyler manifested into a reality.
His last words were "Friends?", they both hated and loved each other, I suppose.
If you read the book, I think that ending suggests that Narrator still feels Tyler's presence inside his head. And in the Mental Hospital, there is no Marla, so Tyler kinda did accomplish his goal of separating his "host" and his "friend" from the World.
Also their picks on who to fight. Hemingway seems like a deep and intelectual choice even though is a fight not a chat so in the end those aspects are meaningless
@@MollymaukT I bet Hemingway could hold his own in a fight. I'd rather fight Shatner than him.
I like how respectful most of those rules were.
When a fight's over, you respect it and leave them be. You ditch the shoes and shirts so you don't accidentally deal more damage with a kick than you meant to and don't damage or stain anything noticeable. One on one fights and one at a time means respecting the men around you and the men fighting, keeping things from devolving into a brawl.
Of course, the point being to break the rules to start Project Mayhem eventually, but it's a good premise.
The first rule of 2021 is : *You do not talk about 2020*
what's 2020?

I think this movie speaks to the current youth even more so then it did to the youth of the 1990s. More particularly the men of this generation. I don't at all feel hate, superiority, or power over women when I say this but women will never understand this movie...not properly. Even with all the Ronda rousyes and such making it big, men KNOW from an animalistic calling what it means to be angry and want to fight it out. Each one of us big or small black or white trained or untrained, all of us fellas feel the beckoning of the fight.
+Cassius Clay our tiny women brains could never comprehend
thats right you cant
+Cassius Clay If you think that the meaning of this movie relies on the fights and testosterone relief then you did also not get the movie. I'm a man btw
+Naju34 actually its more insightful to observe the movie from this angle then the "take down corporate America" view. It actually does have to do with how manly tendencies are becoming archaic and outdated. What's your take on the movie Mr. Movie review?
Cassius Clay It's also not about taking down corporate America
You see, Fight Club (both the book and the movie) tells a story about a man who has it all, and his decision of changing his life for the worst due to sleeping problems send him down a spiral of madness, until he almost stops being his own self and loses his humanity
That's a resumed version of the meaning, but I remember I saw a more extense one on a Metacritic/Rottentomatoes review. It makes sense if you think about the plot as a whole
