I actually prefer this video that was done 2 years ago. You talk slower, which I like. I am a newbie at RV camping and a slow learner, so thanks for not having deleted that video!
New to RV'ing since April 2022. Found your channel a couple of months ago. Appreciate your teaching style, no nonsense, just what we need to be better and safer with RV'ing. Love your tip on low point valves also, makes it so easy to drain low point. Thanks
Fantastic video. I've been rv-ing for years but was looking for a good instructional to send to a friend. You're very thorough and organized. Keep it up.
Great set up process video Ross. I enjoy your RV videos, very helpful. We are new, only 5 trips in, with one more to go this year. Great tip on checking the power before doing anything. I will plug in my surge protector to check the power from now on before doing anything else. I also use the X-chocks and attach them after I level front to back as well. Thanks!
Great video! Because of my sewer connect location, and depending on campground sewage connect, I find it easier to hook that and water up before opening up the slide so I’m not crawling on the ground under the slide wrestling a sewer hose.
makes perfect sense Justin, sometimes I dont even think about those things because they are not below my slide. Great tip for those with slides over connection points, thanks for sharing!
I subscribed and appreciate greatly you taking the time to do this. I bought a travel trailer at auction and I knew none of the steps you just covered! I am going to have to watch it again but great job! One thing you may want to consider adding if it's not on another video already are recommended tools. (For instance, I noticed how you used a power tool to lower the Front jacks. That seems very helpful. I will have to figure out what size connection and buy a power screw driver to do this. There are probably other tools that are a must.
We just picked up our new Shadow Cruiser travel trailer, with the maiden voyage scheduled for May 7-14. I did a tremendous amount of research prior to purchasing, and there was an awful lot of...well, frankly, quite awful content on YT, but I found a couple (and I mean just a couple) of channels made by people that were personable, were presenting quality information that I used to make some decisions, and whose videos were a professional quality. Your channel is at the top of the list! We binged all of your videos and really enjoy them, finding them very entertaining and informative. I've watched them over and over! I really appreciate your checklists...really helps with my OCD!!! hahahaha Thanks for helping making our decision, keep doing what you are doing!!
Great video, very helpful for the new RV user. I moved up to the level mate pro plus last year. I Still keep a level in the rig, just don't use it. You can literally stop the trailer on a perfectly level spot without stepping out of the truck.
One thing I have found out with our rig that has just one slide, is that once I put the slide out, the trailer leans a little to that side and the stabilizer jacks on the opposite side are a little loose and I need to tighten them up some more. So I would recommend that once you think you are set up completely, to recheck your stabilizer jacks. Also, I recheck them as well as the wheel chocks throughout our stay as the trailer may have settled/shifted some, especially if the site is gravel. This is where I think the x-chicks would be advantageous, since trying to get regular chocks firmly wedges under the wheels on gravel Is difficult.
You have the best videos! We are picking up our new travel trailer tomorrow and I really appreciate your style of videos. They're easy to understand and make RVing seem less intimidating and completely doable! Our first trip is at the end of the month. So grateful for your help 🙏
For leveling side to side and front to back,I use peel and stick bubble levels. They have flat bottoms and I stick one on the bottom of the frame window on the drivers side. The next one I install on the front of the rock shield where it meets the cap. Most of the time the bubble is spot on,other times it’s off just a hair and I never had a problem with anything working inside.
Fred, I’ve been wanting to do that for years and never got around to it. Maybe I’ll knock it off the list this weekend. How long are your bubble levels?
I have a bulls-eye level stuck to the tongue right in front of the jack. I don’t know how accurate it is but everything works and I don’t roll out of bed.
Awesome videos!! A little late to the party. (I’m currently binge watching all your content) One tip I learned the hard way…. Check the ground at the bottom of your steps to ensure the ground is level. Before you put your mat out. I twisted an ankle stepping from the step onto a small hole on the ground… I bring along a small garden shovel to fill in small holes that one might accidentally step in…
Be advised that with travel trailers or 5th wheels, there could be as much as 3-4 degree difference in outside as compared to the inside floor. Always check the floor inside.
Before I level the trailer, or do anything, I check to see if all the utilities work. If they don’t I contact campground personnel to either get it fixed or if I have to move to another site I don’t have to break camp because I didn’t set up yet. To help me level the trailer, I use a level attached to the front of the trailer that I can see from the driver seat and a wedge type leveler like Anderson. Hear are my 10 steps to set up camp. My wife and I can set up in about 15 minutes. 1. Pull up to the site and look it over before pulling in. Look for overhead branches and debris on the ground, anything that would keep from pulling in. I don't have a slide, but this is where you would check to see if it clears. 2, Pull/back into site, check that the utilities work and will reach. Check that the water flows and the pedestal is wired correctly. Spray water faucet with Lysol. Look at sewer hook up for anything unusual. Go no Go. If all above checks out proceed, If not contact campground office to correct problem or get new site. 3. Level trailer side to side and see that steps clear. 4. Chock wheels. 5. Unhook trailer from Tow Vehicle. 6. Level front to back. 7. Stabilizer jacks down. The rest in any order. 8. Connect water, electric, sewer, cable TV, if applicable. 9. Chairs, awning, table. 10. Cold beverage.
I'm old school and use a four foot level also. My helpfull tip is to lift the level up until it shows level. This will show you which side and exactly how much you need to place under the tires to be level.
It’s called voltage drop when you extend your power cables too far. This lowers voltage and increases amperage, causing more heat than the conductors are rated for. Causing an electrical fire or damaging equipment.
Correct, but the cause is resistance increase through a longer circuit. Talking about impedance in a travel trailer set up video is probably going to confuse people more than help them, that’s why I kept it simple lol. Thanks for watching and commenting Trevor.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS thanks for the video. As an electrician our code book uses the term voltage drop (in canada). That is why larger conductor size is used for long runs as it will prevent the drop. But manufacturers don't provide options to help so it was good of you to include this.
Thanks for the great videos Ross, we've just bought our first trailer and we've been watching all your videos! One question - I see you connect the drain hose at set up time. Aren't we supposed to keep the shutoffs closed until we leave, then open and clear out both the grey and black water? That being said, can we just connect it on departure day to do this task? To clarify, we don't camp more than 4 days at a time with our current popup or previously, tent - so I don't expect any great accumulation with only the 2 of us. Thank you!
Great question Jerry, you are correct that the valve should be closed so you absolutely do not have to connect your sewer hose until you are ready to dump. The Mrs. takes very long showers so we are usually dumping our gray tanks every day. Thanks for watching bud.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Thanks very much Ross! I now see why people install the pipe when they set up - to run the grey water directly to the sewer instead of holding it back as I mentioned for the black water tank. I recall you once mentioned using the grey water to clean the pipe after emptying the black water. A great tip too.
My wife and I seem to remember everything except the level. We have "eyeballed" our trailer level more than a few times, and we get surprisingly close most of the time 👍
Just check out your video. I thank you for the information. I’m a NEWBIE!!! I just purchase my very first travel trailer on 02/12/22. My very first outing is scheduled for mid April. So I’m trying to learn as much as I can. So thanks 🙏🏾 for your most helpful information. I’ve watched many RUclips videos over the past few years in preparation for this moment but still scary as hell because I’ve never done any of it hands-on as of yet. So I will take your advice on set up when I do my first trip.
You should definitely try out some Anderson levelers. I feel like using x-chocks before leveling front to rear is completely asinine, but I've seen campers do all kinds of ridiculous things.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS I actually bought the Beech Lane version because they had better reviews. Only one time out of approx 20 trips did I encounter a site that I couldn't get level with them and had to use my Lynx levelers.
Can you do a video on permanent RV's in camp grounds? I am a new owner of a permanent RV in a campground resort. Many of your tips can be used on this type of RV I know, but would like to know what is different in maintenance of my type of RV & the travel RV's you talk about. Thanks!
Nothing is really different Chris. You don’t have to maintain wheel bearings and brakes if it’s permanent. One thing I would do is pay attention to the roof. They can accumulate branches and leaves when they’re parked.
I am getting ready to go on my first camping trip without my husband and I need to know if I unhook the power cord from the truck before or after when I plug into the power pole?
Like all your RUclipss. We have a 2021 Grand Design Imagine 2600RB 29' so your RUclipss are great to watch and learn from. I noticed you use wooden blocks for your stabilizers and front jack. Any reason? We use the Camco leveling blocks which comes in a stack of ten and easy to carry and load. We do use the Andersen leveling system and I really like it. Plus the ROBLOC solid rubber wheel chocks. Thanks
Ross, I noticed you will run your water heater either gas or electric. I heard from some RV 'god' you can use both for a fast recovery. What is your thoughts?
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS I saw your new updated video and you did a great job. One other thought, regarding setting your water pressure regulator. Do you set the pressure while the pump is running water or not?
You should do one about breaking camp. Yeah, I know you'd think it was just the reverse but, sometimes stuff happens. I've been RVing since the 70's and I'm about to tell you something that will let you know anyone, even someone with years of experience, can screw up. As I was pulling out of my campsite, my neighbor was waving his arms frantically at me. I slammed on my brakes, got out of the truck, and he pointed up the side of my fifth wheel trailer. I forgot to bring in the awning. Yup, bone headed move of the day. Our previous RV had a manual style awning so you couldn't help but see the awning was out due to the arms being low to the ground. These new electric awnings don't have those arms. So, out of sight, out of mind. And, of course, my wife just looked at me and shook her head. That could have been an expensive lesson. I suggest you keep a checklist like I used to do and have started to do again.
This is an excellent idea, let me see what I can do Tom. Humble of you to admit that, but honestly bud we have all been there. The only difference is some people admit it, some don’t.
Hi Ross, wondering if you have a video of your trailer? in this video I could see backpacks on command hooks? which may be a great idea for my set up. you also had a broom fastened to a hold in you storage compartment? which may be a great idea for my set up. Such a demo video of the hacks you have picked up might be helpful
haha, experimenting with some lighting to enhance the video a little. a lot of channels in other niches use mood lighting... not sure if I like it yet, will have to play around with it some more. Thanks for watching and commenting old friend!
anderson levelers or the ones by beach lane, get rid of blocks you can go from 1/2 " to 4 inches for you side to side works with tandem axles also, saves ton of time, i used both now, prefer beechlane ,...otherwise this video is great for beginners
Paul, I agree. I went with the carmtek levelers because they don’t break like the Andersen levelers. I will be creating an updated essential videos next year with new products, especially since we’ve moved to ramps from blocks, as well as products viewers like you have suggested. Here is the carmtek video: ruclips.net/video/hD9QU5DCZqY/видео.html
Ross, starting to dewinterize our Imagine and we just got another dump of snow so will wait until this weekend. We bought a pair of sissor chocks and will be staying at Rio Bend Golf Resort, southern CA, January and February 2024. Will it be ok to have the sissor chocks on for that long of time or should I take them off a couple of times so the tires can rebound back? Thank you.
should be fine... dont overcrank them... just enough pressure to keep them from moving. there's more weight on the bottom of the tire sitting on the ground than you are applying to the tire with the chock. tires are meant to have pressure on the treads so these will be fine. Happy camping Keith!
Why do you set up the rear stabilizers first? When I set up, I set up in an X pattern with the stabilizers!. Is this wrong? I am a newbie, camping less than a year now. I have a small T T 26’ overall
Just a habit, I believe my manual says that but I dont think it makes a difference. What I think is more important is about after an hour of the tires cooling off and moving around inside the rig is to go back out and check them again, sometimes they just need a little adjustment after everything settles.
Thank you, here is an updated one I just released, and better in my opinion. There is an updated checklist with this video as well. ruclips.net/video/ermDoIB-y7s/видео.html
I am thinking of purchasing a Furrion backup camera. You listed the 7" what do you think are the advantages of the 7" verses the 5" other than a bigger screen?
I have a 1999 Glendale Royal Classic l just put a new battery in it for the generator, when we put it to start it wants to start but doesn’t.Any ideas what to do?Thanks
1) Check for connection lengths and slide clearance. Adjust position if necessary. 2) Level sideways. 3) Chock wheels w/ standard chocks. 4) Connect to power. *Optional: Turn on fridge and thermostat if you have access. 5) Disconnect & move truck. 6) Level front to back. 7) Install Xchocks. 8) Lower stabilizer jacks. 9) Open slides. 10) Set up ground mounted steps. 11) Connect & set up everything else. 12) Check stabilizer jacks one more time.
Maybe should have called this "How to Park and Level a Trailor". Wanted to know about fresh water and sewer hookups. Gonna be using one in my yard while repairs are done on my home, wanted to see more on what's required to hook it up.

Hey, I like your video's, very helpful. I've reached out to a couple of RUclips channels to no avail, but here's another go @ it. I'm a small self employed guy out of Arkansas and recently have had an idea about a RV raffle giveaway. If this is something that interests you, I would like to communicate more about it somehow. Not sure how to get in contact with you but where there's a will there's a way... again, thanks for the video's which are very helpful!
This was very good. However, the main reason I watch it was to see the sewer line connected. That may be old hat for experienced users but those aren’t the people watching this.
they sewer hose just connects by twisting the end of the hose onto the fitting at the sewer, and onto the pipe at the camper. I show one of these connections in this video: ruclips.net/video/ermDoIB-y7s/видео.html
Ahhhh learned something, actually light bulb came on. “Empty hot water heater”. Good call. Let’s see. 8lbs a gallon of water x 12 gallon water is almost 100lbs weight. It’s not much but for driving 400+ miles a day will save wear and tear on tires and fuel.
Have you ever tried to change the closet door handle and/or the window shade so the closet door can open up all the way? This is a lack of attention to detail!

It will fill up naturally as you introduce water to the city water connection, or if you turn on the pump after filling the tank.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome!
Thanks!! great video!!
You're welcome!
I level side to side with a carpenters level placed on the rear bumper
I am getting ready to go on my first camping trip without my husband and I need to know if I unhook the power cord from the truck before or after when I plug into the power pole?
to make things easy, unplug your truck then plug into the pedestal immediately after. consider it 2 parts to 1 step.
Thanks
Thanks for the nice comment Keith!
Ross, I noticed you will run your water heater either gas or electric. I heard from some RV 'god' you can use both for a fast recovery. What is your thoughts?
Yes you can, I just never needed to. after 8 years of long showers we never ran out of hot water, but you can definitely run both at the same time.
Also, here is an updated set up video, much better: ruclips.net/video/ermDoIB-y7s/видео.html
Great video thanks! Curious what everyone uses to ensure you don't end up on a road with clearances that are too low?
Great video, your thoughts on checking the power pole immediately after pulling in?
Absolutely a good idea so you don’t unpack everything to realize you might have to move to another site.
Here’s one for now but will be updating this eventually with a new video:

Do you have a link to that ratchet tool at 10:04?
that comes with xchocks, but its just a 3/4 ratchet
Great video. What is that blue ratchet you have to tighten Xchocks and stabilizers? I would love to get Hubby one.
it actually comes with the set, but it is just a 3/4 ratchet. you can get one here: amzn.to/3OxZ4kL
Yours is blue. Do you have a cover for it?@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
No, the blue one comes with the x chocks.
Now this is just my opinion but for me NUMBER 1 set up priority is. (SLOW DOWN DO NOT RUSH) haste makes waste and you’re gonna forget something.
cant agree more.
Great info
Thanks Ed!
Thanks, Ross! What's the blue glow coming out of your bathroom?
haha, experimenting with some lighting to enhance the video a little. a lot of channels in other niches use mood lighting... not sure if I like it yet, will have to play around with it some more. Thanks for watching and commenting old friend!
I appreciate the vids and will always watch!! Go GD family!
anderson levelers or the ones by beach lane, get rid of blocks you can go from 1/2 " to 4 inches for you side to side works with tandem axles also, saves ton of time, i used both now, prefer beechlane ,...otherwise this video is great for beginners
Awesome clip. Where can you find that outdoor mat bag?
here you go: amzn.to/3D2dzqP
Why do you set up the rear stabilizers first? When I set up, I set up in an X pattern with the stabilizers!. Is this wrong?
I am a newbie, camping less than a year now. I have a small T T 26’ overall
Just a habit, I believe my manual says that but I dont think it makes a difference. What I think is more important is about after an hour of the tires cooling off and moving around inside the rig is to go back out and check them again, sometimes they just need a little adjustment after everything settles.
Where’s the checklist? Great video btw, one of the better ones for sure!
Same thing, smaller screen. Can’t go wrong either way: amzn.to/3w4IalQ
Still don't see a checklist? Or link to a checklist? Link should be at top for quick access. TY
watch this video instead... its better and more detailed, and the checklist is much better: ruclips.net/video/ermDoIB-y7s/видео.html
I have a 1999 Glendale Royal Classic l just put a new battery in it for the generator, when we put it to start it wants to start but doesn’t.Any ideas what to do?Thanks
not sure sorry
Never used a camper but is it possible to level with the stabilizer jacks?
No, they are used to stabilize only, not lift the trailer.
Does this process change with an electric stabilization system?
I believe automatic stabilizers get put down during the same time in the process, but i would check your owners manual to be sure.
Great video!!! What brand water hose are you using and is it 1/2” or 5/8”? Thanks.
Robert, not sure of the brand since I bought a while ago. It’s got standard hose end fittings and I think it’s 1/2”.
I just got my first RV- how do I feta check list for setting up
1) Check for connection lengths and slide clearance.
JC, this video talks more about the equipment: ruclips.net/video/yuvS3zZL81c/видео.html
Thanks for the info! What Rachet wrench are you using?
Here you go: amzn.to/41ZTLRb
Thanks! I probably used the wrong term but I was referring to the tool you use in the video on the wheel chocks
That came with the x chocks. You can just use 3/4 ratchet wrench: amzn.to/3Fh0Oes
What about that Ratchet tool? What is that looks cool!
That’s the ratchet tool that comes with the xchocks. It’s the same size as the stabilizer jacks.
Do you have a link for that ratchet wrench?
sorry for the late response, it is just a 3/4" ratchet: amzn.to/3yF1Ccz
I just watched a video, and how come everything in the description is blacked out?
not sure but everything looks fine on my end.
Do you have a video on your hitch?
I dont, but anything I can help with?
We are purchasing an Rv in April. On order now. Looking at hitch especially weight distribution hitches. Do you by a sway control at the same time. Ram 2500 29,6 travel trailer
@@fishspike3428 there's a bunch of options out there, but Ill say this. Go with the Blue Ox Sway Pro. its weight distribution and sway control. ive never talked to anyone who didnt like this hitch.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS thanks. Appreciate the advice. Lots of info out there and gets overwhelming. Great videos by the way. Active subscriber
I appreciate that very much, glad to have you on board. Safe travels my friend.
Curious, how long does it take you to set up?
About an hour for everything, lights table grill, etc
I use the measure app on my phone to level 😂 dumb but works!
thats not dumb at all, whatever works for you! My job here is just to provide options. You might be interested in this video though: ruclips.net/video/ht4CCPVoWSw/видео.html thanks for watching and commenting my friend!
What are the locks on your surge protector?
they connect a cable together to protect my EMS from being stolen.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS I thought so but how ? and yes great idea
Would you like to test rv propane quick connect ?
i might do one of these in the future
Hey, I like your video's, very helpful. I've reached out to a couple of RUclips channels to no avail, but here's another go @ it. I'm a small self employed guy out of Arkansas and recently have had an idea about a RV raffle giveaway. If this is something that interests you, I would like to communicate more about it somehow. Not sure how to get in contact with you but where there's a will there's a way... again, thanks for the video's which are very helpful!
sorry Joshua, not interested in the raffle at this time.
I’m unable to copy the check list in my iPhone.
Send me your email address. I’ll send you the list
Also make sure you never plug the camper into the pedestal when the 7 prong plug is still plugged into the tow vehicle.
Hey Brian, something I dont think I talked about in this early video, but I do mention in my later videos: ruclips.net/video/ermDoIB-y7s/видео.html
Where is the checklist?
Nvmd I found it
❤️
Have you ever tried to change the closet door handle and/or the window shade so the closet door can open up all the way? This is a lack of attention to detail!
I have not, but definitely agree.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Any ideas?
Not that I can think of right now, you?
