- METAL GEAR ONLINE 2 has been offline for many years now. Recently, I've decided to revisit the game and figure out if it's still worth playing nowadays in 2024.

For a PS3 revived game the population is insane. We are blessed so many still love this game.
As you said it is quite often more popular than MGO3 servers.
For sure. More than happy with the population as there’s always games to join. Just didn’t want to give the impression that there are thousands of people playing currently as much as I would like that.
@@PerfectStealth I wish there was lol 😂
it's cause ps3 online is free
@@MGrey-qb5xz I think you misread my statement. Reworded:
Other ps3 revived games are not as popular .
can't believe i was winning tournaments on a big ass flat screen tv, no headset, and blasting music as a child lmao this game will forever have a special place in my heart
I respect MGO players a lot because this game is hard as shit
Thanks 😊👍 have a blessed day
This was the first online multiplayer game I ever played way back on PS2. I still miss playing this since I don’t have a Pc. Great memories it was fucjing fun. Hard but fun.
Edit: I’m talking about the first MGO of course. which came with MGS3 subsistence.
Thanks man, i appreciate this 🤗🤗
😂
This is the best and most accurate lip service for MGO I've seen. Similar videos are overly focused on SNE or MGO's quirkiness as it relates to the Metal Gear fandom. You're the first person who articulated the depth of the game and the feeling of skill acquisition over time. As you explained the thrill of getting good enough to get a killstreak, I thought, "Yep... that's why MGO hits different. This guy gets it." This is the first video that does a good job of articulating how serious of a competitive shooter MGO can be. I feel other videos are almost false advertising, making MGO2 sound like an online MGS simulator. In reality, even though people can play their own way, there's an undeniable competitive, skill-based core to MGO that leans toward a competitive player base rather than one excited to roleplay as Vamp in an SNE room. I think there's an overrepresentation of MGO as a "Metal Gear" game, while at the same time, not enough respect for MGO as a competitive shooter. Your video strikes the right balance by helping the audience understand the depth and complexity, while also letting them know there's room to enjoy the more approachable elements as well. Others seem afraid to scare away new players, so they're okay with lying to them about what MGO is. Whereas you chose to present the game with transparency and respect for their time. I've seen new players come to MGO from other videos and complain it's not what they were told it was. I think explaining the difficulty of the game does not alienate new players; it merely attracts the right ones.
Also, good job mentioning the origin of "git gud." The phrase spread to the Souls community because I got a bunch of MGO players to buy Demon's Souls. I had the Asia edition that came out months before the English release. The MGO GameFAQs community began excelling at PvP (we started a MGO 1v1 community on Demon's souls), and when the official US release server launched, we had a massive advantage due to our early experience. The Demon's Souls leaderboard was filled with MGO glitchers. Complaints about invasions and PvP were rampant on Demon's Souls GameFAQs, where they were met with MGO2 GameFAQs' tight community invading their board and spamming things like "hahah git gud n3s." This is how our slang contaminated the Souls community in the early months. We all finished with Demon's Souls and went back to MGO, but once you're hit with "git gud" as an insult, your mission is to improve enough to say it to someone else in return. The Demon's Souls player base continued to use our slang on each other. MGO2's GameFAQs was notorious for invading other game boards (CoD in particular) and insulting the player base about their game's skill cap. Despite internal conflicts, and MGOers always beefing with one another on the forums, we always united to brigade another board. It's surprising that "git gud" was the only MGO slang that caught on outside the MGO community.
This era ended when Windalgo and Staircase created MGO2dotCom, and we left GameFAQs because the staff frequently banned MGOers and removed our threads. We became an insular community from around 2010, and "git gud," which stuck with the Souls community, continued to grow in popularity as Souls solidified into a genre and garnered widespread recognition. Then MGO was shut down, as were our community-run websites, which almost wholly deleted our paper trail and claim to "git gud." Now, "git gud" will forever be falsely attributed to Souls.
Hi, IriaChan! I was a big fan of yours back in the day. Your endorsement definitely means a lot!
I went into creating this video wanting to be upfront and honest about the 2024 MGO2 experience. Especially the experience new players will undoubtedly go through on SAVEMGO specifically. I will forever love MGO2 but being anything less than transparent about what awaits anyone playing the game nowadays would just end up being a disservice to the game in the long run. As you put it - I don't want new players to come across my video and get into MGO thinking it's an online METAL GEAR SOLID LARP-ing experience for like 99.9% of the playerbase.
Also, thanks for the rundown on how "git gud" even started. I had no idea you were at the forefront of that!
Man this was some of the most fun I've ever had playing a multiplayer game. I'd come home from high school almost every day and play this nonstop til way past the time I should've been sleeping. Sure a lot of stuff felt like bullshit (like pros spinning in circles and shooting you in the face while avoiding headshots), and the community was mad toxic sometimes, but it could also be really wholesome. And pulling off some real ass Tactical Espionage Action with your friends was sublime. It felt like I was missing out when I wasn't on. I've had fun with multiplayer games since, but nothing ever truly hit quite like this game. I just got MGS4 working great on RPCS3 last week, so I'll have to check it out!
I was older i was like 20 when I played the first MGO from MGS3 Subsistence, incredible the PS2 could handle it lol. and of course MGO2 for metal gear 4 I was like 24. Damn I’m old as fuck
@@chadgrov MGO 1 blew my mind too! Shit was so cool. I miss games just being simple multiplayer matches and not some longterm live service grindy thing. and I am also pretty old now so I feel you. 😭
@@birms3287 shits not easy anymore lol. I’ve been liking Insurgency sandstorm and Hell Let Loose these days. I suck lol. reflexes and all that lol
Man i hear you! i missed a lot of sleep too with this gem! i miss TSNE matches lol! so many good memories, gonna try to install it on pc ,i played this during the whole online service ,had all extensions ,i had to convince my dad so hard to get those LOL
This game was insanely competitive even back in the days. Imagine it nowadays!
It's only gotten even MORE competitive but I love it!
imagine wagons, ever think about that hmmm
My absolute dream to come true would be MGO2 to be released with MGS4 that would be included in the Master collection vol 2.
Same here!
jesus are they still doing this volume nonsense, just bundle all the mgs games and be done with it, heart less company this konami
I really should play this again. I remember winning a tournament and receiving a beret that you can wear so that everyone knew you're pretty good😂
Mgo2 was my favorite online gaming of the ps3 generation. Every mgo is special to me i always loved these game but my favorite will always be mgo2 and is my favorite online game of all time
The best online game, great video! Thanks for mention me
Been a fan of yours since the early MGO days. I remember when I first watched your SVD Montage with the amazing music. Glad to see you're still playing and still wrecking people!
I tried it on my ps3 but I'm so bad at it that I decided to quit, the fact that only the sweaty players remain make it pretty hard to get back into, especially considering I was a god when the server shut down. I knew how to box-crouch to manuever, roll to get out of autoaim, bait other people into rolling so I could headshot them, just headshotting in general with the M4, I knew CQC tricks like going prone to avoid a grab (not possible in MGO3 since you can now be grabbed from crouch while prone), and of course slamming and headshotting or stun-knifing. The only thing I was really bad at was using the mk2, could never really get the headshots without cqc.
So many years of not playing and getting older really hit me hard and it really sucks that the low population essentially locks you into sweatfests every single game. It also lacks a lot of the "just for fun" lobbies that you would normally see pre-shutdown like CQC only lobbies, stun-only lobbies with the tranq pistol. (and gasp, training lobbies with infinite health and an instructor) The controls are also super janky especially after playing newer games in the series (the crouch and the roll button are the same while square is relatively unused???)
When MGO3 came out I was definitely riding the bandwagon at the time and being a hater saying they turned MGO into call of duty, but after going back after so many years I really began to appreciate the design decisions of the newer games and how accessible it made metal gear to people who didn't want to deal with bad controls and confusing mechanics (like getting shot in the head at spawn because they shoot your corpse's head...) that would get abused and called "skill". I even became skilled at the FOB mode and reached 3000 in the world after learning some neat tricks.
I don't know how many times I've thrown a grenade instead of shooting in MGO. Those controls weren't made for a game in which you're dead if you make the slightest mistake.
The controls are the best, making the skill ceiling higher, making you appreciate getting better at the game and other skilled players. Also, I'd say we sweaty players are the backbone of the community since players like me have been there since savemgo launched.
You couldnt stop me from talking about this game, it may have issues but it out shines in some many areas you wish other games took half as seriously as mgo did.
Sorry youtube is acting up I don't know if my msg went through

Your video on MGO2 was great, dude!
@@PerfectStealth likewise man, keep up the good videos!
This game was the only thing I played for so long. Loved the Survival sessions with random teams. I remember you could actually use camouflage to your advantage. I had a woodland camo I used to use and it was immense hiding prone in the long grass on Forest Firefight to juke players and seeing them run right past you none the wiser. Good times.
MGO 2 was so good
Still my favorite shooter to this day :)
Konami would go house by house burning every copy of the game if they could, thanks to people with legit passion this can be possible, amazing imo, respect the people behing the project and players, stay safe bro
God I’d love to play this! This was the absolute first online multiplayer I ever played way back on MGS3 subsistence on the mighty PS2
Get involved!
You forgot to mention the best mechanic this mode has: Flinching.
Such a good mechanic it is.
Haha the flinch is a legendary mechanic for sure!
@@PerfectStealthIs this legal to download? Wouldn't it be a copyright violation to download this?
Mon premier jeu en ligne, ce jeu est tellement une pépite
Fantastic video covering the strengths of this amazing game.
Thank you so much!
Freedy please come back 😢
Holy nostalgia....sooo many good times on this game! Too bad I was a kid with unstable wifi, and couldn't afford the dlc. Still had incredible fun!
MGO 2 is one of my favorite multiplayer shooters of all time. So unique, and I loved the high skill ceiling.
This game and ghost recon AW2 are the reason I got into online gaming, it was essentially my Halo😅 really hoping Konami adds MGO into Delta and are able to recapture that feeling of playing MGO back in the day
Same!
Imagine how many would've turned out for survival if you could play on official firmware still on PS3, at one point there were 1,000 people online when that initially dropped
Also watch out for that Brandizzle guy, heard he likes to LS
Yeah, it's super rough that you have to mod your PS3 at this point. That new PS3 update Sony pushed a while back kinda ruined everything. It's just another barrier to entry that most people won't want to deal with.
Yeah that guy glitches for sure.
Wooooahhh at 2:56 is that RiskyPlisken and Kool-Aid like old days? Man I gotta come back
Would you happen to have led a clan named “Rainbow Road” back in the day?
@@PerfectStealth I’m afraid to say yes, but nearly 15 years have passed so I’m hoping I’m safe.
Haha, I was in your clan for a bit. I remember playing Survival with you guys. Good times. I hope you’ve been well all these years!
@@PerfectStealth holy crap I think I remember! I’m betting you played survival with us a few times and was like YEP WELL IM OUT! 😂 I’m glad you remember me! And yes thank you all is well in the world for me, alive and still playing video games like a champ.
I had always wanted to try MGO but at that time getting good internet for gaming was hard as hell considering we still were doing the jump to Wifi and and getting wired was not always possible. Also it was still ADSL.
shoutout to the Low Level Lobby helping new players get into the game
3:36 It was stigmatized as being super toxic because IT WAS super toxic. On top of the Mind Games clowns being d-bags and trash talking teams/players that had a tough time ranking up in Survival, you had lag-switchers that completely ruined the experience for other players. I was hardcore into MGO2 back when the servers were up on the PS3, but knowing how trash the community was after being on there for so long has me 2nd guessing whether or not I should bother getting it working today. It looks like the same sweatlords that played it over a decade ago have come back to haunt the revived servers.
I think you and I played together many times, if my memory serves me right. I was "Twilight Heaven" on MGO2 since I had made that MGO2 profile prior to creating my current PSN handle a year or so later.
you are spot on with the obnoxious laggy sweats, was literally fighting guys outside of a house and watching them roll straight through a wall and end up in another room, nonstop headshots and shitty tricks, most fun i had was just fucking around with my teammates because they also didnt even know how to play. this is in the low level server btw
Come back home we sweats miss you 😊
I'm about to play this I geek I just got mgs4 n I miss mgo so much 29 haven't play since 15 😢 like cod fortnite all top shooters will never beat mgo this game was straight up skills only all these games today are baby's to the big boss
MGO2 had such a strong lingering effect because you did not just have the game modes that came with it. But the player created types like SWAT and PRISON. It had great game sense even if the game engine had some abusable quirks, single player mechanics did not always work out for the online. Also obligatory funny 'FauxHounds' and super sweats using add on equipment.
Well said! I agree! The community for better or worse was the heart of the game.
Wow i remember this on ps3 played non stop months after i beat story i did not know there was a multiplayer tried it abd my god the training begins this multiplayer game this specific one i remember you had to train your cqc, master your assault rifle, just every skill had to be practice and fun part bout it there was actually groups just for that before you go in the battle field this game was the only game far as i can remember other than god of war ascension online you had to play position i remember i was a sniper and and a sniper stay in one spot that metal gear had sum good maps, heads shot was mandatory, getting cqc completely laid out and running circles around you head pick u up drop you again was classic this multiplayer was the only game where disguising as a box literally played it part man i missed this game
you don't need a mgs4 disc with the mgo2 data to get back into mgo2 on the ps3
have fun trying to get into it traditionally if you arent already really good at the game, just tried it and the low level server had one time of new players and the other team was nothing but smurfs with awful ping and nonstop headshots, about what i expected
I had an even more revolting time. The other team outnumbered us, had skilled players, all but one player on our team had zero kills, and the other team was constantly trying to votekick that one player. This game isn't worth saving.
Best Online Game ever created
💯
I was waiting for this one!
amazing game. the most unique pvp game in my opinion. we just need more players. Its very hard to get into as the skill cieling is quite intimidating and some old heads being toxic. but still worth it.
The only pvp multiplayers I find playable that still have official servers are The Last of Us and Uncharted 4. pvp multiplayer is in a dire state
I had a good time with both of those as well!
best online game of all time.. when i tell you i used to race home to get on for survival and tournaments.. lol I would ditch my girlfriend just to play.. This needs to get more popular or be remade!
I remember as a kid trying to shoot when my cousin used to play this a lot, it is hard as shit lol
I love your video, good job.
Bro THANK YOU! I’ve been telling people git gud came from metal gear online and they always look at me weird 🤣
Real ones know 🙏🏼
Great content now I have a question what is the best PC to play this on? Please reply with full set up and details. I will be buying my first PC gaming set up in the coming weeks. Money isn't an issue so go ahead and comment what you think I should buy thanks.
We need more 3rd-Person tactical shooters.
I think you forgot to mention it can only be played with a ps3 controller 😢
You can use a PS3, PS4 or Dualsense controller as far as I know
But aren't private servers usually not safe to play without some kind of vpn?
This sounds cool, sad i missed it😅
I am desperate to get some people together to play MGSV’s MGO because I never got to play it and it’s still running but nobody plays 😢
dont
@@bigbuns7283 why not?
Amazing game save mgo team handling the game better than Konami
Omg i spent 2 many hours on this true mgo sweat heads would see warning message displaying from long play hours
is this only available on pc ?
God I want to play this so bad I just don’t want to mod my ps3
Is it ignorant bliss wanting the switch port to have mgo2?
Peace Walker lobbies are goated :D
Finally
How is this legal? I don't want them to; but why wouldn't Konami cut this out immediately?
I wish I had it
Used to kick ass on this game !
I couldn’t cope with that resolution tho 😂 makes my eyes hurt
you can play it on 4k on pc now
Yes. The answer is yes.
I respect Fortnite players a lot because this game is hard as shit
How tf are people playing it
PC or PS3. Look up how to set up MGS online on RUclips and follow the instructions. Probably not even 5 minutes to set up. I've set it up on my PC.
its worth playing if your a MGS fan and you wanna spin around in circles equipping and unequipping the box, shoot a couple bullets and repeat... love the game! im a life long fan of MGS just cant stand the meta
Yes
Time to get my ps3 back out 😂
If I recall, I thought they implemented MGO on PC as well, so if you wanted to, you can just play on PC.
Would be but for the jokers running the show.
yea it's still worth it check me out sometime
MGO2 BEST EVER
unlike mgo3, mgo2 is actually a kojima product and it shows, all the game modes are worth playing and not is some COD team death match nonsense. Also unlike mgo3 devs they didn't make the movement stiffer cause they couldn't balance the game
lol what are you on about? each server is cod tdm nonsense and its stiffer than mgo3, rose tinted shades
@@mosthole mgo2 gameplay is mgs 4 unlike mgo3. Did you like bot actually play tpp and jump straight to mgo3, you literally feel the movement been slow and stiffer
Abarakadabara
MGO2 ruined MGO. Run N Gun and crosshairs… bunch of scrubs
🫡 🖖
I suck:(
no. this is one of the worst games ive ever played.
Play mgo3
I literally got tears in my eyes when you showed the part where the server shut down. One of the saddest days in my life, believe it or not. This game was so special to me in a way I cannot describe. I did play it a bit when the servers was first revived, but because my PS3 broke i haven't played it since. I just downloaded it again yesterday and I'm looking forward to start playing again. Thanks for keeping the game alive with videos like this, and thanks for inspiring my username back when I used to see your PW videos for help 😅
Crazy how MGO3 lasted longer than MGO2 I remember when the server was getting shut down but I had school that day so I wasn't even able to hop on one last time
