Thanks for the nuanced take! As someone that’s recently cut eating out costs and added to my grocery costs, I really relate to feeling like even if I can’t live like a king, I can try eat like one. Since then I’ve really enjoyed getting into cooking, mostly for the satisfaction of quality while I’m eating
Tbh, food is luxury PERIOD Being able to have meat and two sides. Especially dessert. Nothing wrong with going to a food pantry and being able to receive food stamps if you absolutely need them. Which we speak about over here. Plus, whether celebrities eat at Sugar Factory or not, it's awful. Dom's aunt turned 60 and the day of it was packed because of its status but the food was burnt, waitress was rude, and my aunt didn't even receive a free slice of cake to say "happy birthday and sorry for the long wait" it was a mess. The drinks that sparkle and such didn't have much drink in them and they were too sweet.
I don’t know why I’m just now noticing the pop of blue in your braids and that just reminded me of the video of Selena Gomez when she was 17 and she got a blue streak in her hair. I love that video so when I seen that I was like I wonder if that was the reference😂😂
27:49 this reminds me of the promotional popcorn buckets a lot of theaters now do for releases (Beetlejuice 2, Wicked). A24 also JUST launched their chocolate line
I also think that the rising trend of ‘Instagrammable”, for a lack of better terms, restaurants and cafés help further push this narrative of food being an aesthetic. People will clamor and rush to go to the new cafe that serves a typical matcha latte, bcuz the place is decorated and styled with being a photo op in mind. Very purposefully design forward, rather than food centric places.
I've been subscribed for a while and I don't think I've ever commented on your videos before but I find them super nuanced and you bring up so many good points every time What got me to comment was when you mentioned the involvement of slavery, and the topic of food at large, it reminded me of Kara Walker's Sugar Sphinx It's basically a giagantic sphinx sculpture that was made from sugar in 2014 (I think??) and there's _a lot_ of things about it that are super interesting, even down to WHERE that sculpture was presented (I'm only at 16:38 though so maybe you end up mentioning it idk 😭)
I looked it up and the sculpture was titled "A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby, an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant", it's super super interesting

People who vlog starbucks use the sbwl effect to make people jealous of expensive food
6:25 has to be the funniest thing I have seen all year and I have no clue why it has me in tears 😂
Always has been
Trueeee Ukrainians spend 41% of their paycheck on just food every month, prices rise continuously FOOD IS A LUXURY
That makes sense they are living through a war
Reminds me of the high heels and purses that looked like cake from the mid-2000s
Gotta enjoy cooking before groceries truly become unaffordable
