Today, we're talking about the ill-received Lifetime Aaliyah biopic- Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, produced by Wendy Williams and Debra Martin Chase- known for the Cheetah Girls series, the Princess Diaries (and others). Aside from the plot of the movie itself, we'll talk about some of the issues with casting (and why Zendaya dropped out) and why 10 years later, this biopic is remembered as one of the worst.

All I’m gonna say is that Zendaya really dodged a bullet not taking part in that foolishness 🤭.
Yep that movie could’ve potentially destroyed her career if she took that role
I don't think she was right for the role anyway...in ANY Aaliyah movie
I remember when actors had to have some talent. But now everyone pretends attractive people have real talent. Zendaya has as much acting skill as Elvis, Marilyn, Beyonce and Mariah none. And she can't sing, wtf. Damn the people who actually work at their craft.
@@blkjem21u sound like a hater
It wouldn’t have ended her career but it definitely would’ve been embarrassing.
Let’s call a spade a spade. We will probably never get a true depiction of Aaliyah’s life story because there is too much shadiness and questions surrounding her short life. The r Kelly situation, her mother, her uncle, etc…
@@theivoryleague3847 Yeah honestly I would doubt there would even be another one made
I agree. Her Behind the Music is likely the closest we got
Hmmm I'm gonna still hold on to some hope😅 maybe a full lengthy documentary of her life and career will be made🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤞🏾! When it comes to Rkelly, ik people won't let it go but justice has been served ya'll, HE'S IN JAIL! All I care to know is her questionable DEMISE!!!!!!
FACTS 👌🏾
Exactly. Her uncle holding her music hostage, the family being complicit in R. Kelly “mishandling” Aaliyah, the conspiracies around her death. It’s so much that needs to be touched on that her family will never let come to light.
When it comes to biopics I always say if you can't get the rights to the music don't even bother making the biopic.
this right here...because the struggle singing...and MISSY..that is all I will say. The damn movie haunts me in my nightmares.
First red flag
@asiath3mua19 exactly
Her uncle didn’t care about legacy, he held her music back from streaming because he didn’t see how HE could earn a profit off licensing the background artists out. Also he was bankrupt-not just morally, but financially-and Jomo is also just as bad. Her mother was the one who was more focused on legacy, but she also for some reason didn’t want the public to have access to it. Her brother Rashad is the only person who should be in control of his sisters estate and music tbh.
This was such a good reminder of what a chaotic mess this movie was. I hope Alexandra Shipp is somewhere at peace cause the way they dogged her for this and Storm was overkill. Great video as always
Well to be fair when it came to her casting on storm she had all type backlash coming when she purposely auditioned for a role that was suppose to be for a dark skinned black actress and how she responded by being tone deaf, racist and colorist
@@Kevin-rg3yc Exactly! Alexandra get's no grace from me either.

Can we just agree that lifetime shouldn't be doing biopic's for anyone? How do you do a biopic about someone and don't have clearance to use their music 🙄
They've had some good ones (like The Clark Sisters) I think its more so the outside people working on this movie that made it a mess more so than the platform itself
The thing for me was we didn’t really know what Aaliyah felt, and also, when making a movie, the truth has to be in it, which I felt like a lot was missing from this movie because it was so fast-paced.
So, I’ve always wondered how this movie would’ve been received if Zendaya didn’t back out… and how she’d be perceived today. Like, would she‘ve been able to bounce back from this… and still be the mega star that we know her as right now?
I think she would’ve been fine. It was clear the movie was going to be trash regardless not because of her
@@brandoniswhoiam right I wonder if people would have just moved on/ forgotten bc a lot of actors have some flops under their belt- but then I also wonder if she woulda been looked at even worse for talking about how much she loved Aaliyah allllll the time, just to do a movie that was so obviously rushed together/ her own family clearly didn’t want
It's a bit of a paradox for me because I think Zendaya is where she is now (not accounting for luck) because she has great judgement when it comes to picking projects. Her reasons given for not doing the movie seem to be rooted in a high degree of emotional intelligence too. It's hard to imagine what would be if she did the movie because it was so obvious it was going to be bad, if she had done it, I would assume she would have carried that same bad judgement into other bad projects.
@@taiuqsabTrue! There are good actors who are in terrible movies
well she would have been received well if she decided to partake. because in that case she would have had the family’s consent and she woulda read and been okay with the script.
This movie was ASS idc idc, the girl they casted to play her wasn’t good, now everytime I see her in something I’m just reminded of this movie (her face just annoys me sorry idk), they couldn’t use any of Aaliyah’s music so they only used covers, the r kelly stuff was weird bc they don’t explore it, they just put rkelly in it without illustrating how predatory he was, they frame it as some unrequited love story which is weird, and it’s not written well in a way where you can view it from a 15 yr old girls perspective for it to make sense and the way Aaliyahs portrayed is very one note, very boring, I’ll never forget when Wendy Williams talked about this movie and was like “my favorite song is let me know, whats your favorite Aaliyah song 😀” and everyone was on her ASS 😭
Aaliyah deserved better. Same with Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, and any female musicians(excluding Fantasia, the only good Lifetime biopic) who had a Lifetime biopic. Hopefully, a new Aaliyah biopic will be made with(emphasis on with) Aaliyah’s family involved.
Did you see the Clark sisters biopic

@@kamsismith Lisa Lisa is too. The Clark sisters is good too
Absolutely awful. One of the reasons why Zendayas career is as big as it is is bc she turned down this role and didn’t piss off the black community. Black ppl that take part in bad biopics don’t have great careers afterwards I.e: Trevante Rhodes in the Mike Tyson movie, Alexandra ship in this movie, Demetrius shipp Jr. in All eyes on me.
@@patriece2215 I didn’t even know there was a a Mike Tyson biopic-
@ it was produced by Hulu. There was a huge controversy bc Mike Tyson didn’t want it to come out since he wasn’t involved in it and Trevante Rhodes who played Tyson criticized him and the black community as a whole for not supporting it. It’s very clear why we haven’t heard from him since…
@@naomi.cannibal same here
Don't forget Zoe Saldaña as Nina Simone! She's lucky she already had that marvel role & Disney money cuz yikes 😬😬😬
I think that’s why Alexandra has went in a different direction than being in roles that are tied to the black community. She got so much hate for Aaliyah biopic, Drumline and playing Storm in Xmen. She rubbed a lot of black people the wrong way, I think if she kept going for “black” roles, she wouldn’t have been getting casted as much as she is now. She should’ve known with the Aaliyah backlash that her trying to play Storm, a dark skinned African woman, was not going to be a good look on her. Especially with that terrible accent she did.
Zendaya really saved herself I’m proud 😭😭😭👍
The Jackson’s an American dream was made for tv and it’s a classic… “I don’t want you you, I don’t want you, I don’t want you”

Even her working with Timberland was creepy since he admitted in recent years he married his wife because she looked like Aaliyah. That poor girl was being preyed upon by so many people. I do hope a real biopic comes out about her but it's going to be dark. Especially since there are rumors (and pictures) of her and Jay z when she was about 18/19.
This was a Tubi movie before Tubi.
Literally lol
Zendaya definitely learned a lot from this situation bc the big contract difference between that cringe video of her and her dad to her now saying she purposely don’t audition or turn down roles that are meant for black women (particularly those that are dark skinned). I can’t blame her bc she was a kid and it was the adults around who had to keep her inform, can’t say the same for Alexandra shipp after she did storm and the comments she made in response to the backlash for it
@@Kevin-rg3yc I peeped that too! It’s been cool to see her grow- and it really was true in all those clips she def had a parent off to the side, I can imagine that helped

I remember my grandma watching Wendy announce the movie and she changed the channel PISSED 😆
Me & your grandma were on the same wavelength that day bc saaame 🤣 I boycotted the Wendy show for months lmao
@ she was like “got to hell, Wendy!” *click* 😆😆😆
I don’t blame Aaliyah’s family for wanting to protect her image, although I think while she was alive , they could have done more. Definitely a lot of secrets within that family… This made me think of Selena Quintanillas death and how a properly budgeted movie could actually change the lives of those who once surrounded her like her family who have always profited greatly off of her , in life and continuously in death.
They have a Selena series on Netflix that goes more in-depth about her life. Her family had a hug3 hand in making it . I think it's on par with the movie.
I hate when people try to defend Alexandria Shipp for her taking the role.
It's obvious she didn't care about honoring Aaliyah's legacy and only cared about furthering what little of a career she had at that point.
If you think I'm wrong than I dare you to say it's not the same exact story as the All eyes on me movie
I never saw the Aaliyah movie, only the Selena movie with Jlo but i watched the trailer and doesn't seem good. I wish she was still with us. She was so talented and beautiful, i have her álbuns and i listen to her songs all the time. Rip Aaliyah🕊

Cassie? They need to be slapped 😂 how y’all gonna get this girl to play Aaliyah? Aaliyah was a black woman, not a Filipino
Why would a biracial light skinned woman play a monoracial black woman, this is why I hate Hollywood/film world. That doesn’t even make sense especially in a biopic
Aaliyah wasn’t mono-racial
@@tsade6119 Aaliyah was a light brown African American/black woman. She never gave racially ambiguous.

Yes girl it was! and I was like 13 when this came out and was an Aaliyah fan so obviously excited. It was terrible the minute a 14 year old Aaliyah and almost 30 year old Robert’s “relationship” was romanticized. Absolutely not
I’m sorry that I’m not sorry Aaliyah deserves to be played by a full black woman I’m tired of everything being watered down
Aaliyah’s mother is super light, she looks half white herself. I don’t understand the issue with someone mixed playing her ?
@@merona1546Aaliyah is a black woman therefore a black woman should play her. She wasn’t mixed or biracial so why on earth would you get a biracial-one who doesn’t even look black-to play a black woman? Make it make sense? And the movie isn’t about Aaliyah’s mother, it’s about Aaliyah. Everytime there’s a movie about a black woman or there’s a role that’s meant for a black woman they cast someone that’s multiracial and lightskinned. We’re tired of the erasure. If Aaliyah was here I’m quite sure she would want a black woman who actually looks like her to play her.
@@kaylao.3326 but Aaliyah looks like she could be mixed herself. I know plenty of mixed people who look similar to Aaliyah. I just don’t see the issue…if they look similar what is the problem? The review of this movie highlighted the problems I find in a good number of movies now: the pacing, the script, and the lifelessness of the characters. And with biopics, people have a lot of material to go off of.
Aaliyah is my favorite artist of all time, and my disappointment in this movie was immensely high. I remember that works for a biopic for her life started around 2003, and with Google being so fresh as well as it being two years after her passing, it was exciting to potentially see her life and music on the big screen. I still want an Aaliyah movie, but I want it done correctly, it’s not too much to ask lol
Aaliyah’s family was “protective” of her legacy but not of Aaliyah because they sold her to r Kelly…..
if Amerie were to have a biopic Alexandra could definitely play her !!!

the way neither one of them looked even remotely similar to aaliyah. its upsetting that people's genuine concerns with the obviously whitewashed casting was brushed off as "hating".
I’ve never seen anyone with as much potential as Aaliyah had. She had so much charisma. She really was about to take over the world, but it’s kinda cheap ito have her say it in a biopic right before she passes away.
Anyway, Aaliyah had an air of mystery and kindness about her. Sorry, this is the first comment I’ve written about her, so it’s all coming out 😭. It was bittersweet watching the video for Rock the Boat cause it was amazing. I was too young to appreciate Selena before she died. But I saw the rise of Aaliyah, and I can tell why she’s still remembered so fondly.
About biopics? Maybe there are two or three good ones, tops.
Yes... yes, it was. The acting, the actors, and the whole project being greenlit was not the way
Actually Keisha Chente was first cast in the Aaliyah biopic but turned the role down because there was no input from the family and they disproved of the tv movie.
She didn’t want to be disrespectful to Aaliyah legacy and her family wishes so she walked away from the production.
I remember hearing it being ripped to shreds and by the time I wanted to go watch, Lifetime had buried it in the archives to never be seen again lol
Aunt Wendy was out of pocket for this movie. The fact she thought this was okay was ridiculous and I’m still pissed off at lifetime for allowing this mess

This might be off-topic, but I wonder if Alexandra Shipp remembers her role in the Aaliyah biopic and her part in the "Drumline" TV movie. She really put in a lot of work with those low-budget tv films 🥲 but I guess it paid off, as she’s now in some major movies like "X-Men" and "Barbie," plus that film with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell-though I can't recall the name of it at the moment. I’m curious if she thinks about her time doing those smaller TV movies and if the experience of the Aaliyah film still haunt her😭
Yes and that's based on the casting alone. Aaliyah was not biracial - I'm getting tired of Hollywood
I don’t wanna be controversial but it pissed me off when Zendaya’s dad said, she’ll spend lots of time in the sun to tan. Ummm, no sir, she’s not DARK ENOUGH to play Aaliyah, that’s it!
You're not being controversial at all. It's very disingenuous that they would rather cast a light skinned biracial woman and have her alter her physical appearance than just cast someone with the appropriate skin tone in the first place.
It's the same energy with Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone while wearing darker makeup and a prosthetic nose instead of you know just casting a dark skinned actress with Afro centric features - features that were a key part of nina's life and legacy!
@@funmilayotijani3119what’s even worst that supposed they were considering Cassie. At least Zendaya has atleast one black parent. That chick is a whole other race

I never could wrap my head around Missy and Tim were casted and styled based on them AFTER Aaliyah passed. They were better off casting Gabourey Sidibe in finger waves in a trash bag!.
The biggest inaccuracy of that tragic movie was, Aaliyah never performed “Got to Give It Up”. The only reason they got rights to that song was because it was a cover. 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
Biopics about singers usually aren't that good, the Amy Winehouse biopic was awful

But rocketman
@@ZacBobisKing Yes! Rocketman was amazing! So much better than Bohmeian Rhapsody in my opinion, even though that film ended up getting all the awards glory
Yes... it was THAT bad. None of Aaliyah's music, horrible casting decisions, low production values, Wendy's involvement and subsequent running of her mouth... this movie was doomed to fail and rightfully so. There's a reason Teyana Taylor dropped out of the movie too. She was in talks but pulled out because she's a true fan and understood the bigger picture that Zendaya (initially) and Alexandra seemed to be ignorant to.
Biopics are not good nowadays and haven't been for some time (with a few exceptions). Outside of the cheap and tackiness of the Aaliyah movie, even the bigger budget ones suffer from clichéd formulas and uninteresting perspectives.
Where at one time we felt like we could learn new things from biopics, now it's more like a highlight reel of the celeb's most known moments. You really could just go to Wikipedia or RUclips for that.
"Was the Aaliyah movie really THAT bad?"
Yes, yes it was
Lifetime, Wendy Williams, no rights to Aaliyah's music...
💯💯💯💯
I have a controversial opinion but I won’t share here. What I’ll say is; Aaliyah’s legacy has been mishandled so badly by a lot of people, even her family at times, and I wish nothing more than for her to rest.
If the close family and friends aren't consulting and you can't get the music rights, baby what is you doing?? Definitely not paying homage and honoring anyone's legacy. That's just a money grab.
I wonder if Zendaya has nightmares about what could’ve been lmaoooo I know I would. I don’t think she would’ve bounced back from this film too quick truthfully lol. Wendy Williams producing was the hugest red flag 🤣🤣🤣. This movie had been in the works for years longer than Wendy was actually apart of it. B Simone was in talks to play Aaliyah years ago. The casting was so atrocious none of the actors looked like who they depicted. Especially R.Kelly and Missy Elliot 😂😂😂. Lifetime is great a dramatic movies but biopics they need to chill.
It’s not that deep. Learned & moved on
No matter how many years have passed by, I will never like the Aaliyah biopic. It was an inaccurate depiction of her life and really disrespectful to her memory and artistry. Especially when they tried romanticise her and R Kelly’s ‘relationship’ when it should be clear to anyone that he groomed her! And there was no point in doing the biopic if they couldn’t even get her music rights. I hope one day the family will create another biopic but with better production, casting, and more accurate information about Aaliyah! They didn’t even touch the surface of the amazing achievements and doors she opened within R&B and the sound. Smh
In conclusion? Yes
Why? Watch the video
It checked all the boxes after all : romanticizing her relationship with this predator, melodramatic dialogues, mediocre acting for an overall blandness, inaccuracies in the stories and for the general cast, Wendy Williams directing it all…yeah, what could’ve possibly gone wrong ?
Loved how zendaya mentioned her love and respect for aaliyah didn't allow her to do something LESS THAN for her!!! Well said!! Rip to the GREAT AALIYAH! WE MISS YOU❤
The biopic was just….silence…
The biggest thing to a successful biopic is having the person or family involvement. They didn’t have that, the budget, and it was on lifetime…it should’ve never been made.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Selena and La Bamba were the best ever music biopics... ever!! And they were theatrically released! These producers should take notes. I feel bad for Alexandra. It took time for her to dig outta that hole. Wendy should be ashamed.
I’m tripping about Lifetime at the very least knowing they could license “My Prerogative” and making no attempts to put it in the Britney biopic. Or maybe the people who made that movie didn’t know she did a cover of it…
Wow Z really bloomed beautifully. Even her confidence has increased in her interviews the older she has gotten. She used to speak like she had to prove herself. Now she speaks like she KNOWS she's that girl 🔥 still humble but headstrong.

I have a very vivid memory from elementary school. The week after Aaliyah died, we did a kind of memorial for here on one of the walls near the administrative office. There were pictures of her and like notes that some of us wrote about how much we loved her music. I think that’s when I was first learned about the concept death. Such a much needed conversation actually 🙌🏾
It kinda romanticize the relationship between her and her r@p!st. It genuinely wasn’t anything great that’s looked back on positivity of her life.
I agree. They focused more on her relationships than her music imo
I know the family wanted a big production for her legacy but also! Something tells me since after all that came about from R Kelly, they probably don't even want to touch on the topic of their relationship. Being in their minds like should we? Or how would the audience treat it? Mad because they did or happy because they didn't include it. If they did it could be VERY minimal and just show the workings of her career and not the relationship. Because he obviously started her career. IDK So we may never get a movie TBH but, who knows maybe another 10 years from now. She needs to be celebrated more! The mere fact that they moved on with the biopic without the family's approval is weird and disrespectful in and of itself. How are you going to tell a story about someone and have everyone close enough to her to tell it right and factually out of it and not on board? At that point, it is really just being told based off of what the public already knows and when it comes to that there's a lot of inaccuracy and just downright wrong facts because the media often spreads misinformation. Them not even having her music playing in it was the cherry on top. There's also a disconnect between the way they chose to portray Aaliyah and how she came across in interviews, I feel like although the actress....tried she could have studied her more and the way she chose to answer questions. Aaliyah had a quiet confidence and an air of mystery about her and when you try to portray someone like that without the people who knew her closely to guide you it's set up to fail lmaoo. I'm not a huge fan of biopics anyway because they are very rarely done right.

The way you naturally pronounce biopic which you mention at the end of the video is how we pronounce it in the UK. Or at least I do and everyone I know does. It always sounds weird to me when I hear Americans say it the way you did for the majority of the video. Also I remember seeing this film when it came out and thinking I must have missed half of the film because as you noted, NOTHING HAPPENS! Plus the R Kelly stuff if effed up and I hate the way they portrayed it like some Romeo and Juliet crap in this movie. Disgusting!
