I'll share with you some tips and tricks on how to do that, and what to look for when you're checking your gear. If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel for more camping adventures. See you next time, and stay safe!

Great wisdom. People laughed so much at guysdoing things in their back yard or in a nearby park that most have forgotten that you have to run through things first. It's where the term shakedown run came in to our vocabulary. Even before a long trip I like to take my vehicle for a run that is usually 160 miles round trip. Lets you know if everything is working right. You go through the vehicle the same as the rest of your gear to make sure it's ready. Same with your gear. Something has a tear or a seam coming undone fix it before you go. Same with the edges on your cutting tools. Does anything need a little oil to loosen up. Maybe zippers need some wax to lube them. It should a part of the fun of the trip.

Practice in the dark to set up your new tent and even to get particular things out of a new backpack, that's what I learned from stealth camping.

Getting to know the gear in a safe environment helps with practicing your skillsets. Having dirt time in the backyard has helped in the field more than once thanks to the bushcraft community.

Definitely a great idea to always test your gear and I would add only change very little at a time. It's nice to have an occasion to buy a whole lot of new gear but instead of making major changes, try out every new piece first at home and then in the field one by one or make it a real short trip just in case. Then again, there's nothing like being miserable yet safe enough... makes for great stories!

Good advice, Blackie. Since I'm a tent camper I always set up a new tent to see if it has good seam sealant on it or if I need to seal it. Also practicing at home setting it up before you go camping so your not struggling to put it up when you get to your campsite, especially if you have to set up in the dark. But I think that's common knowledge by now (hopefully). Happy New Year!

This is fantastic advice a few years ago when my boys and I got into bushcraft and survival. We practiced gear and techniques in the backyard all the time, and still do. Plus it's fun and easy to camp out in the backyard with the kids. We just did a couple camp outs in the backyard testing some new gear they got for Christmas. And honing skills camping in upper 20's temps.

This is solid advice, one time I bought a tarp and one of my loops wasn't stitched. Thankfully I realized this in my back yard and not on some mountain top, in the middle of the woods. Always inspect your gear before departure!

Teaching people how to use a fire rod, oh boy, that could really be a masterpiece. There are talented and untalented people and those who can get a fire only with a jet lighter. But you should also practice this at home before you go out.

I'm becoming a little set in my ways these days and have 90% of the kit for the more unpredictable environments. Much of the new kit gets tried out on day hikes. The canteen advice is good stuff, been caught out a couple of times and even a day hike is a long time with an unsuitable canteen.

I have been testing Coleman lanterns & stoves since Christmas and still have around 50 + more lanterns to go , so far I have found 4 lanterns that need attention from stuck or rusted ball check valves in the pump to "bad" clogged or stuck fuel pickup tubes , the stoves have all been fine . I went over each one as I bought them doing repairs and replacement of parts they all were fine when I put them up . I have been doing the same with my Army tents , right now we have 4 set up in the backyard , they all had their seams sealed last year when I had them set up but some of the seam tape has started to come off , they are not leaking but given time they will . I have been busy sealing the seams again and have 8 more to go , each night I sleep in a different one and it has been raining a lot the last week , if it takes me a month or more to go over each one I will , it sucks to be out in the woods hiking or just glamping to have your equipment take a shit when you need it the most . Good video , most people think all because your equipment is new or like new your going to be good only to find out after getting wet and staying wet in cold weather that you screwed dealing with hyperthermia or worse

    👍👍👍 .. wise advice.
Also, after feverishly ripping open the packaging to get at the goodies, take a deep breath, get a fresh cup of coffee or tea, sit down and then use the Product 'RFM Function' .. 'Read the Flipping Manual'. This, and using You Tube and other Forums beforehand for Reviews on the Product, can (and has for me) save one a heap of 'pain' 😫 out in the Field 😏.
    A good share .. thanks.

It never ceases to amaze me how someone can go out into the woods with a tent they've never even set up before or a sleeping mat or inflatable pad they've never even taken out of the stuff sack. That's just flat out dangerous. Everything made by man can, will, and eventually does fail at some point. Don't let YOURSELF be the weak link in your gear chain.

I just bought my first ultralight pack, so I have to pack it with my lightest gear and wear it around town to test for fit. It also has two open pockets on the side up high so I have to see how those work when it rains. Great advice Blackie.

Do a dry tun in your back yard. If sonething fails, fix it right there or order a better replacement, right there. If you need an item, stop and get it from the the house Walmart or order it online right there.
Rinse and repeat. Gear must be used, not stored.

LOL Yes I remember the old aluminum Boy Scouts cook set. Yes they would burn water. I went hungry on many Boy Scout outings because of this. This was before freeze dried existed and C rations was worse than dog food including the stale cigarettes.

11:28 Was it the Tom Brown Tracker knife that you didn't like? I own one and it's ok, just not great for what I need it to do for a camp. But for what it is, it'll do.
But granted, it's been 2 years since I last camped. Life sorta happens.

2 more options: try one new piece of gear per trip, but still bring what you are replacing as something to fall back on. Another option is to go camping with friends so if you wake up with your cheap hammock sideways and your butt hitting the ground you can hop in someone's tent... ask me how I know.

You should also practice fasting. Go a day or two without eating. Your body will actually improve. We eat too much anyway. But if you aren't worried about eating 3 meals a day you will be far better off. Strife is inevitable. Don't let it imperil you because of a short term situation. How many creatures go without eating every day? Most. Man is trained to be a pig. It actually harms you. Most live to eat, few eat to live. You can do this in the back yard too. Pemmican is for when you just can't acquire food in a few days.
Add this to Blackie's recommendations. Live a healthier life.

Yep. I first learned this after going to the flea market and getting that cheap "Rambo" knife as a 10 year old. Pappaw said "Boah, you learning now ain't you..." took it out there. Failed. And hey there was no YT baton testing, forged in fire thing😂 I didn't do anything like that. It sucked. Garbage stainless. I did however have my Buck 110 as a backup, which my grandfather also hated...that he was not exactly right about😂
