A camp Elder is a prized title. I always go to them for info/knowledge. Becoming a Silver Wolf should be considered an accomplishment in life. Thanks for making life simpler using experiance and knowledge.
glad to do it
Have one I've used for years, just refill with 91% rubbing alcohol
Thanks for the pro tip ! Approximately how many ounces ( I have a bad habit of overfilling things)
@@neil2945 YW, it's the dollar tree version, label say 3.25oz, I just fill the reservoir and squeeze the sides until squeezing no longer make bubbles and the alcohol is sucked into the can
nice
Have you ever tried to remove the wick or add another hole, in order to refill the can with alcohol? I am struggling with the refills and I must be doing something wrong! Thanks in advance!
I have that same canteen set. The newer version has two more vent holes on each end. With water an inch from the top of the cup & using a gel fuel it was 25 - 30 minutes to a rolling boil. Also use a small grill grate on top of the stove to help with air flow, that might kill some of the heat getting at the cup but for now that’s my setup. I normally use a alcohol stove, Trangia or several different DIY.
i got like 4 trangias love them
I love my Trangia and now my new Kelly Kettle too but this is pretty handy ain’t it?
I'd throw that can in a freezer bag or two before chucking it in a haversack
good idea
Blackie, You are a piece of work my friend! This Sunday is my 62nd bday and I could not agree with you and Nessmuk more! When I was a teenage boy scout taking my Wilderness Survival merit badge "roughing it" was a laudible notion. Now? Not so much... I know I told you I just bought a brand new ILBE this week but that was basically so I could carry all the stuff that just wouldn't fit in my other packs. I live on a mountaintop in northern NJ a mile or so from upstate NYS. Would I rather park and huff it to wherever I choose to set up camp? Over hiking some ridiculous distance vs. parking and walking a reasonable distance. Your advice and knowledge are a constant source of inspiration to me. Thank you. Bill Doyle from Upr Grnwd Lk, NJ! Be well buddy!
Coffee doesn't cool me off. But, I am still going to drink it in the morning.
lol i hear
Question, if the liquid in the Sterno can is paraffin oil, could it be refilled with paraffin oil? Rather than lamp oil such as Tiki oil we use paraffin oil for our hurricane lanterns. Paraffin oil does not produce smoke, does not produce off-putting aroma as does lamp oil, and paraffin oil can safely be used indoors.
I use the Dollar Tree ones, that are the same.
Did a quick video on it, several years ago.
thanks for watching
Roofin in texas in july -sept my lunch was a can of vienna or potted meat and i barely could do that but it helped with salt in body , got home i d eat 2 chilled clausen pickles and shot glass of the brine
Roofing in Texas in that season should only be done at night... Would be my line of though LOL! Jesus! You must feel like a strip of bacon by mid day?...
@@Danceswithempties i use to look latino 🤣, the worst was foil faced powerfoam when we did vynil siding install....basically a solar oven 🤣😵🥵😵💫😭
@@Danceswithempties we got to where we would work 6am to 11 am by 11 u couldnt touch nothing , we would siesta till 430 pm is and work till 8 lather rinse repeat
Thanks Blackie anything that make things easier is a giant +
glad to do it
Thank you for the video Blackie. I've seen these cans at Walmart but never bought them. Big benifit that the can stays cold, typical sterno cans get hot and lid don't seal all that great.
Not really a silver wolf, only 38 with a shot back and back surgery, I feel like a silver wolf. Really enjoy your videos, as they always make life in the woods just a bit easier. Thank you for all you do, and I look forward to more videos like this!
When do we get the details on the silver wolf training in Oct?
first of next week
Have done the same with a folding leg grill over the can. Quieter than a butane stove and gives time to prepare other food. Also makes good temperature water for washing dishes.
Right on
That's a great idea Blackie. While looking for a canping stove, i found two models, one from Sterno themselves and one from Coghlan's, that are designed to use with Sterno fuel cans. I found them on Amazon' but they may be found at Walmart also.
👍👍👍 .. good idea. The long burn time is definately a bonus.
'Sterno' has a reputation for 'burning cold' .. as it is designed to be. Something similarly packaged with a higher heat output and with an extended burn time is definitely the way to go.
Here in Switzerland, the closest we have is the M71 Military Stove. It uses Gel with a reputed burn time of approximately 1 - 2 hours depending. Advantage is that it burns pretty hot and will bring water to a rolling boil. Refilling is simple (actually any suitable metal container will do as a Burner). 'Sicherheitbrennpaste', an Alcohol-based Gel Fuel, is widely available here in 850g / 30oz plastic squeeze bottles in Supermarkets .. Indoor Table-top Cheese and Meat Fondues being a Swiss National Sport 😁.
Safe to use in more 'Fire Sensitive' areas and extremely clean burning .. a handy option to have in one's Tool Box.
Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
Hi Blackie, thanks for the video. I've seen those Camping Sterno cans, but never gave it a second thought. I thought it was the same thing with a different name. I'll have to try that. Appreciate the info!👍👍
I had a catering business and never thought to include these in my preps or for camping. Will now. Have used both the gel and liquid Sterno fuel for many jobs, they were a main part of our business.
Which one, based on your experience, would be best for use in the woods? Like how Blackie demonstrated
@@BingWatcher I would say the one with the wick. Little more versatile, like an alcohol stove
The coffee thing works in lower humidity environments, not high humidity.
yep but here in high humidity alabama try telling everyone not to drink coffee lol
@@BLACKIETHOMAS Guilty of that one myself in NW Florida, but in the summer, the tea intake goes way up.
Blackie what kind of coffee do you recommend to use with this scenario? Maybe the single serve instant coffee packets?
I live in East Texas, I know about heat index . 105 temp in a couple days . Keep camp coffee this time of year , makes me hot . Does the bail of that canteen cup stabilize when over the fire ? And does a WW 2 canteen fit in it ? Thanks Blackie
a G.I canteen will fit and the bail will balance with water in pot
Slow Small Safe and doesn’t heat up the area.
Yep, there’s a place for this 😊
Good stuff! I’m gonna try this! Great idea for the small wood stove too!👍👍
I use chaffing fuel from Dollar Tree(Canada) in a DIY stove made from old coffee can. Can use the canned fuel, Trangia burner (& clones), or even twigs. Also have M40, M44, & trangia 27 clone [same as yours]. All are used with an insulating base to prevent heat loss /scorching of support surface.
Long ago, I started camping with a sterno stove, candle lantern (5" candles) and 2 man nylon tent.
So your ruffing days are about over?
Let me tell ya some'um young'n, wait untill ya passed 70. 😁
I watched your video on boots 👢 and staying warm...and I was wondering if pantyhose would be nice to hold heat and a thin sock for boots 👢 under the heavier socks..my boots are leather and gore-tex 10 inch
Smoothing’ it. You betcha! How would you compare that stove and canteen cup set to a traditional stainless canteen cup and USGI set? I realize that you can’t fit a stereo stove under a USGI stove, but overall, which set would be your overall choice?
One question I have is if you're not using the Boundless Voyage stove as a traditional twig stove where you would need to add wood for fuel why not just set the cup in place along the same lines as the stove to get better heat delivery? There is plenty of airflow IMLTHO. Thoughts? Bill Doyle from Upr Grnwd Lk, NJ
have one of the 1st gen. canteen stoves (43 years). used alumin foil as a lid for years, until i found a commercial one. usually use hexamine tablets. i carry to 1 qrt canteen sets with me. 1 for drinking, 1 for cooking. hate plain water, so i carry flavored water.
I like my DIY alcohol cat can stove. Heats quickly and no need for pot stand.
Those Sterno ones are very convenient though.
i have made those diy a few times they work well
Hey, Blackie, this was a great video! I've seen that stuff at Walmart but never tried it. I'm gonna grab some on my next trip to town. I love that the outside stays cool so you can "bag it up" while you're sipping your coffee. The speed kinda nullifies the twig stoves for just making a hot drink.
Blackie, That’s a winning combination, ty for sharing
glad to do
I drink coffee in the summer or winter doesn't matter I don't care if it's 100° I'll drink a cup of coffee
Just wondering if you could refill that can and with what?
Thank you for passing on more wisdom
Oh boy more kit those gas stoves and propane are crazy expensive like butane is now too… You could make a pot stand from an old can and use it like the old Pathfinders stove had . Have fun stay safe.
Most of these chafing heaters use ethylene glycol and di-ethylene glycol, which are related to alcohol. The stuff if pretty toxic and not for consumption, but the burn is pretty clean and very safe. It's safer than the alcohol gel cans. It won't burn without the wick, which is usually fiberglass.
I've got some in my emergency and camping stove supplies and my testing showed them slow to get water to boil. For some odd reason, I hadn't thought of using 2 of them in a canteen stove setting, which brings it up to acceptable performance. Also really minimal setup. Great test. Thanks for the demo!
if your wanting to boil quick use a trangia
Great video Blackie didn't know about those 😮thank you sir
Glad to help
Keep in a ziplock just in case 😅
good idea
Where did you get that pot? Should have watched whole video before I asked, LOL
yep on amazon
Thats 36 meals at 10min. Burn time. SpaghettiO or something like would heat up well enough too make a meal without burning. Hummm..worth tha try ..thanks Blackie
Good point!
That’s like a little over ten cents of fuel to warm lunch! Cheap
BT you need to come to Statesboro GA amongst these fine Georgia Pines and go camping with me.
lol sounds good
Yeah Blackie, we earned a little
s m o o t h ! Just south of Baton Rouge it was 88° and 44% humidity today and I was luvin' it !
take care
👍 Thank you for introducing me to this product.
glad to do it
DOOD!
DUDE!!!
Good to keep around , i keep gel sterno in truck and car cause ive had the liquid puncture and leak the gel dont make as much a mess
Gel, interesting. I'm thinking maybe diy jello (plain gelatin), I use the fluid one rn, gel sounds like alternative to spilling
thanks for watching
That's a great idea ill have to check that out that will last me whole hunting season
walmart has it in camping section near coleman stove
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Outstanding video sir..! I wonder if that would fit my sterno stove 🤔..? 🐻
Yes it will
Stay safe Blackie
Huh. Almost Like a disposable Trangia, would you say, Blackie? That's pretty good....thanks for the tip, Brother!
You bet
Thanks Blackie
Blackie, Great Video and Outstanding Information. Tip and Trick Thanks for sharing. Being a Silver Wolves I remember when I was in Boy Scouts early 70s-79 . There was a Purple Sterno that you could cook on it ,very high heat . Do you remember these? Thanks Again for sharing your Time and knowledge and wisdom and experience and passing on the Craft. Tim L.
i do remember those
Sam’s club has 6 hour chaffing fuel cans 12 cans for $19.34, or $1.62 per can. Members Mark. They work great. Only issue is you need pliers to get the lid off the fist time.
good to know thanks
I wasn't aware of the Sterno for camping, Will have to test compare with my Trangia. If the Sterno for camping comes close in heating times. I may have found my new go to burner. Thanks
trangia is far better but it gets hot and you have to carry fuel..trangia is a better choice to cook...but this is a good idea to heat up precooked chow or hot drinks
Thanks for the clarification. It also seems that the Stereo with the wick is safer in dry conditions because the can stays cold. Alcohol fueled stoves are banned in most Public Parks in my area. Stereo is allowed because it is self extinguishing if it spills
I bought a can of Fancy Heat like that from the dollar store for a buck, and I refill it with rubbing alcohol. I use the rubbing alcohol that is 90% or more alcohol.
good stuff
Just wondering, Have you ever tried to remove the wick or add another hole, in order to refill the can with alcohol?
I am struggling with the refills and I must be doing something wrong! Thanks in advance!
@@BingWatcher I used two self-taping screws to put holes in the top, one to let the air out and one to let the alcohol in and then after I fill the can I screw the screws in to plug the holes.
@@stevestumpy6873 Wow! That’s very clever. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am going to try this out tomorrow. Much appreciated!
let me know how it works for you.@@BingWatcher
The problem with STERNO is it won't boil water. Yeah it will warm up, but tha ist some thing I can do twigs and they will bring water to a HARD boil
trangia will boil it in 6 or so min
Thanks Blackie! Question: Any issue with that fuel in cold weather?
depends on how cold i have used in in 30F and it did well i will try it again this winter and report back to everyone
Good video Blackie, thanks for sharing , God bless !
Glad you enjoyed it
I just added a can to my shopping list Thanks for the information
Hope you like it!
good won
I work indoors in a 100+ degree building and I drink hot coffee while working in jeans haha
yep i have known several who drank no matter what the hotter the coffee the better
Guess I'm first
🏆
🥇 congratulations
congrats
I’m “smoothing it” in the woods from here on!
thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing Mr Thomas.
my pleasure
It reminds me of a prefilled Trangia Burner... Which makes me think, Is it reusable and refillable or a one and dump? 🤔
I purchased a similar one from Dollar Tree that has "up to 2 hours burn time". After using all of the fuel in one, I trickled citronella scented tiki torch fuel into the top reservoir (that holds the fiberglass wick) and patiently waited for the fuel to drip, drop-by-drop, into the fuel chamber. It works, but the tiki torch fuel burns smokey and I would not want to use it indoors. Maybe 91% alcohol would be better for that.
have not tried
I am working on trying it but have difficulty getting the alcohol into the empty can
@SleepyMann61 Yes, it's not a fast process (at least it wasn't for me). On mine (from the Dollar Tree store), there are two small vent holes in the indented reservoir near the wick. I trickled fuel into that reservoir and tipped the can ever so slightly to allow air to escape from the elevated vent while fuel slowly dripped in through the downhill vent. Took darned near an hour to get a couple of ounces in.
@@bretjohnson6188 Thank you for your reply. I guess I just don’t have the patience to do it myself. Good luck with your project!
Blackie. I am not a Silver Wolf, but have you ever heard of the 1/4 stick of butter in your coffee before you go to bed on a cold camp night trick?
I think l've heard mention of that & l can only think all the fat in the butter would stoke the inner furnace.
Of coarse the caffine would keep me up all nite but at least l'd be warm lol
yep i have heard of that and it taste pretty good
Great stuff as always. 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice item to have on hand!
It sure is!
Nice
Thanks
Thanks for doing this, I saw these the other day at Wally World and thought about picking up a couple to add to the Hurricane Stockpile. Based on your results, I'm gonna bite the bullet and grab some as our weather over here on the MS Gulf Coast is not that much different than that of LA (Lower Alabama).
dollar tree keeps one similar but it's only a 2-1/2 hour burn but it's a buck and quarter a can! those take 10 to 12 minutes to get to where you did and about 15 to 18 to a full rolling boil! most of these use dyetheleneglycol or a methanol mix! after the can is empty you can make a trangia out of them that center section is just press fit in and can be popped out get a travel size of barbasol shave cream or a travel size axe body spray for a chimney and piece of cotton cloth for a wick around the chimney and for less than 5 bucks and a half hour you've got a descent trangia burner!!
Have the aluminium version of this canteen set with the idea that aluminium heats quicker and hotter than titanium in less than ideal weather (have a round titanium set for the summer). Haven't seen these sternos for sale here but they must be somewhere. If I'm just boiling water I use the old boot polish tin with the fire rope and alcohol. It's surprisingly effective, light in your pack and the price is right.
really cool
thanks
Sterno also has chafing fuel cans with a two hour run time. I don’t know how much they cost but you can get them in a multi pack. I am definitely going to look into these products. Thank you for sharing this information.
glad to do it
@@BLACKIETHOMAS the chafing fuel cans are designed for keeping food warm. hence the name chafing dish heater. not good for camping.
Hello Blackie- I have a few of those little flame stoves and they work well, plus you can get many uses out of them before they go dry. Im not sure if these ones are re-fillable, but one could put some used cooking oil in, pop a hole on the lid and run a wick, which Ive done and it works good too. Simplicity is more convenient for us Silver Wolves. Be safe out there Blackie- Carry On-
hiram cook took one and drilled a hole by the wick to make it refillable years back! he used methanol for fuel!!
That is a fantastic idea, never seen one of those before & im 51.. great video Blackie ,Thank ya sir.👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
That is good information. I was surprised on how clean it burned. Itt seems to be a piece of equipment worth to look at. The boil time is not that much longer than with alcohol stoves. The "cool to the touch" property is an advantage. Around here it could be used when you cannot build a fire and with the liquid contained spills are unlikely. So there is minimal risk for starting a forrest fire.
i agree the cool to the touch is a plus
Thank you Blackie. I have also seen these at Walmart and wondered how they work. Looks like another good option as a heat source for warming or cooking.
dollar tree keeps one like it but those are 2-1/2 hours burn but at a buck and a quarter a piece!
Right on
