- n this video, I’m going to show you how I upgraded my winter hammock camping kit with a new onewind outdoors 800 down topquilt. This topquilt is amazing: it’s only 2lbs, but it can keep me warm from 0 to -20°F. It’s also versatile: I can use it for hammock camping or ground camping. If you’re interested in this topquilt, you can check it out on the onewind outdoors website here.

thanks for watching..stay warm everyone
If it’s really cold, and I’m trying to keep a top quilt (or 2) from falling off or out of the hammock, I will use a hammock with a bug net to keep everything contained. In extreme cold you can really stack the insulation that way.
Onewind makes excellent products.
Thanks Blackie. Excellent product and vid. Can you talk a little about the straps to attach to the ground pad please in your next review. Do they come with the top quilt?
Regarding use as a sleeping bag, I think this has great possibilities. The way forward for all sleeping bags? Onewind could develop a line of bags with no underside specifically for attaching to ground pads.
Did I miss it or have you mentioned where the art for these video thumbnails comes from? Reminds me of the classic artists from a century ago. 👏👏✌️
An old mummy Bag rolled in a blanket inside a tarp.
Hi Blackie, tim from Florida,
I just weighed my pack . I dropped 6 pounds going from the USMC ILBE pack to a Lowe backpack. dropped 4 pounds additional with my new down sleeping bag. I will be about 30 pounds for a winter loadout for the Adirondacks
good job
Thanks for the gear review and the fact that we can trust it to be honest and complete. I always trust your content and have found it to be spot on in practice. Have a Merry Christmas and fantastic new year.
I appreciate that!
Blackie I would use something like this to carry in the car or use at home during power outtages non camping bushcraft people do not realize how practical it is to have gear just for emergencies
I can drop 6lbs in a good movement.
💩💩😁
lol
Fold the hood inside. I am continually amazed at the new generation of camping bags and outer wear and boots and camping gear. i was so happy with my first set of nylon insulated underwear i wore then hunting day and night. Dark Brown with knitted cuffs. Sleeping on the kitchen table of a i bed room Cabin with a screened in porch. i slept on the kitchen table a 6' round wooden table which shared the kitchen with a blue and white Cast iron Stove brought in by boat. No Road no electric. Left them for my brothers with my 2000 grm boots, tan Wal-Mart coverall and all when i returned to Fl.
Mt man here watching 👍👍 yes I have slept in the cold woods good job there blackie
The thumbnail looks very inviting.
I also love winter camping for pretty much the same reasons.
I’m allergic to down to feathers. I would love to see you review on alternative.
One wind is a great company good equipment relatively cheap for what you get
That’s one serious sleeping bag! I got me a good marmot sleeping bag about 15 years ago. Works well 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
Awesome job showing it! Did you think the price was high?
I just bought a premium underquilt from Hammock Gear and spent a lot of money on it. I'm thinking about buying one of these now considering its half the price
$300 bucks!!!
Too rich for my blood you can always get a king or queen size down blanket and make the same modifications yourself for a third of the price.
It looks like a wonderful little sleep system but it's just too ridiculously expensive for my blood.
And clearly it's not waterproof. And it's high maintenance too.
I bought some of those sleeping shoes that are down from China. They are wonderful they keep your feet about the right temperature without getting hot in a variety of temperatures. That is until your stupid cat gets on you and lays across your feet. Then it turns into a dang oven
Great video, sir!! I was leaning towards finding me something wool but you might have talked me into down
I just ordered both the top and underquilt from onewind last night Lol
Thank you for the review Blackie. That quilt looks like it really lofts.
I found a deal on a Ledge -20 mummy, ninety bucks, but one +10 nite in it left me sleepless, sweaty then cold. In the a.m. water was dripping out of it. So I sliced it and stitched up the ends-all it was was 2 layers of hollofill inside. Now it’s great so there is a use for a mummy bag just not as it was intended.
Blackie: Just wanted you to know i dropped your name when I recently bought an MSS bivvy bag from Kaufman's after watching your tour of the store. Like new (or perhaps new), and at a much better price I could find elsewhere. The lady at the store was very helpful and pleasant; it was like the old days shopping. Thanks for the info and advice. You are a prepper/camper national treasure.
glad to help and i hope you have many years of adventures with your new mss bivy
@@BLACKIETHOMAS Don't know how many of those I have left (71), but I'll make the most of them.
Kind of cool to see old school meets UL. Talk about a literal weight off your shoulders!
Very interested in where I can get the straps going around the sleeping pad and connecting to the topquilt.
There is nothing cheap about good down. Some people are couragious enough to make their own. This is an item you put in your vehicle when you travel in cold weather if you carry no other warm gear. Certainly you want hang it up or store it loose when you get home. That large foot box is great for keeping your feet warm.
It’s a shame that I’m allergic to down material. I do hope it works out for you.
Blackie, what hat are you wearing?
Blackie 14:08 is thst pad One Wind as well? 🧐
That has a lot of down inside it.. Have fun stay safe.
Blackie, Great Information Thanks for sharing. I remember how warm my M-49 Mountain Sleeping bag was in Germany 1980-1982 . One Wind system looks great , I trust your opinions on gear reviews. Keeping us in the woods and outdoors. Y'all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Years. God Bless.
Merry Christmas and Happy new year !!
👍 Excellent demonstration. One Wind needs to hire you as a Spokesperson.
You introduced me to this company some time ago, thus far I have been pleased with everything I have purchased from them.
Wow, thanks!
I've had an underquilt and Top quilt for a couple years . I love the TQ in the hammock , but prefer a top zip sleepingbag on the ground. Too many drafts occur rolling over in the ground and the straps make it way too hard to get in and out of to pee. If I could sleep thru the night it wouldn't be too bad I guess. Not sure if you've done a vid on R value of airpads. My 3.2 R pad is only warm to 40 degrees. Below that I go to my Xtherm 6.9 R. This is very important going from a thick heavy bag to a lightweight hiking bag. Great vid.
thanks for watching
Oh mah Lord, Blackie- you done did it now huh?
Have you tried a full night sleeping under that yet?
After freezing my what you would call Silver Wolf tushi off on two nights, I researched and got a lightweight down top quilt. I tried testing it out two nights at home when temperatures dropped to mid forties. My quilt goes nowhere near your temperature rating and the quilt was so hot, the first night I kicked it off my body in my sleep and the second night I had kicked it off completely … also in my sleep. I also discovers that the material sounds familiar when handled. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but then it hit me: it sounds just like a baby’s disposable diaper! Ha ha ha!
Yup- you’re in for some nice and toasty nights with your quilt!
I bought a Zenbivy sleep system and it too is light as a feather. I feel bad for getting one during these economic times. I used Christmas and birthday funds to get it awhile ago.
The one downside I discovered was that they are luxury items and therefore when you read the washing instructions, us menfolk find out what womenfolk have to do when they wash their delicates. No chucking these in the wash and and forgetting it. You have to use the most gentile cycle. Can’t hang dry these things unless you want the down to clump up on one end. Have to also put it in the lowest heat cycle in the dryer with tennis balls to redistribute the down.
So what I’m saying is that I inadvertently discovered that my pricy purchase is good if I have to run fer the hills for 3 days to maybe a week in a temporary SHTF regional event where the grid will eventually come back. BUT - for long term TEOTWAWKI event, it just ain’t gonna last 😕.
thanks for the comment i look forward to trying this one out soon
Hi Blackie
I’m not understanding the four straps that you put around the mattress? What is the purpose of this application?
Thanks Timothy
it allows the top quilt which is so light to stay close to your body this thing is so light it will float off you if not
in some way held in place
I’m not trying to be a fafrnugin person but how can a one or two inch sleeping mattress help with comfort? I’m sorry to put this way but this is the only way I can describe the mattress.
I’ve had one and it was extremely uncomfortable.
Hoping for a reply.
C. Pechacek
usually i add a thick layer of leaves or pine straw under it to add padding. in my youth i would sleep on a thin pad like your talking about but these old bones need a bit more these days
Hi Blackie, greeting from Australia 🇦🇺, thank you for your time to make these videos, wishing you and your family friends a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Thank you so much!
👍👍
those are so cool I’ve been wanting one for years. I’ll be watching your reviews. 😊
Nice! Is the compression sack "waterproof"?
it seems to have a coating inside to help with that
@@BLACKIETHOMAS cool, that's pretty typical. "Water resistant" Happy Holidays!
That's very nice, good that the ground pounders like myself could use it also. That should work great for you. Thanks for the video. Merry Christmas to you and yours. 👍🎅🎄
I like and use the snug pak cocoon when I hammock camp in the winter and MMSS sleep system. It has worked pretty good for temps in the single digits
I’ve used the Onewind underquilt from my hammock set many times when ground pounding, as a top quilt. Just throw it in the shelter and use it as a blanket, and it’s kept me comfy down to near freezing using it alone. I may have to invest in this down quilt.
That pocket at chest level is pretty neat. That would be a good place for a handwarmer.
true
Great information
That is a real beauty! I can’t wait to see the videos of you using it!
Very soon!
This reminds me of the nice down bag I got last spring that will be my top quilt this winter. It's Uber light and lofty. I look forward to using it for the first time.
Sounds great!
@@BLACKIETHOMASI really like the snaps and the color of yours. That's uber stealth. I just checked out the sight and surprised that its breathable waterproof too. Certainly looks like top shelf quality. Im a fabric geek and thia is the first time I've heard of graphine used for fabric.
Well Blackie
I watched your video and bought this product for my Amock hammock. I trust your opinion always. Looking forward to winter camping 🏕️
Hope you enjoy it!
