As a Brit most Hollywood WWII films stick in my throat. However, this whilst stupid was genuinely funny.

A comical look at the Army through Hal Roach with William Tracy leading the way with his photographic memory and his bumbling company of men. Good humor at the time. Joe S

The was the first of a series of "army comedies" co-starring Tracy and Sawyer that lasted through 1943 (when the Roach studio "commercially" shut down for the duration of World War II), was briefly revived in 1948, and finished with two more films in 1951 and '52.

Hal Roach Jr. produced the last two of the series, after he became more active in his father's studio operations (especially in TV productions).

I didn't know buglers still sounded "Officer's Call" in modern times. Lighthearted pre-war flicks like "Buck Private" and this were no longer being produced after the horrors of Pearl swept away our naive innocence. However this enjoyable little gem seems to be a children's show.

I have heard the explanation about "tinker's dam" many times but I think the term is really tinker's "damn" (aka "curse" or "cuss") because tinkers were not only craftspeople but a class of Irish itinerants known for cursing people. Since they did it all the time and probably never carried out half their threats before leaving town, their curses were worthless.

Incorrect description. Was never on the verge of being booted out of the army. His actions, although scorned by a sergeant and an officer, was seen to be genius by higher ranked officers.

I guess everybody's heard the Boy Scouts got in trouble. Shame! I got hired at one of their offices and quit the first day. Here's why. I was given nothing to do but answer the phone and keep my butt in the chair. I asked for work to do. Told not to ask questions. I was severely told that reading on my break was BAD. No reading! No customers. They really frowned on reading. Kinda didn't seem like a thing like reading should be so darn wrong since it's kind of educational?
