Case in point is the 2018 Draft Class of Ayton, Bagley, & Doncic. Why is Doncic an MVP candidate for several years now while the other 2 are running out of the league?

hmm To be great, you need both. But you can still play ten plus years in the league off raw talent. if you have no talent whatsoever, so can't shoot, cant pass cant defend, dribble, rebound nor score, but you have a high iq, you'll probably not make it into the league. and if you do you probably will not play....but the high iq can guarantee you a coaching job after a short career

Athleticism determines your floor, while IQ determines your ceiling. Also, IQ keeps you in the league longer(at a more productive level) think Westbrick(High Athleticism and low IQ) vs CP3(low Athleticism and High IQ) and Bron(someone with high Athleticism and high IQ)

    • @MugiwaraNoReemy
      @MugiwaraNoReemy 19 дней назад

Also, IQ is not only about being an elite passer and defenders(or understanding the game at high level). Its also about taking care of your body and developing your skill to the next level. Think Shaq vs Kobe, one has high Athleticism while the other has a high IQ. Probably why they worked so well together because Kobe was so elite at his IQ to develop his skill even tho he lack the Athleticism and physical gifts of Shaq. While Shaq was physically gifted that he literally didnt need a high IQ or to even develop his game much(even though he should have). Kobe lasted longer and won more rings. IQ keeps you in the game longer at a high level

westbrook has been in the league for ten plus years and has an mvp to his name, so i reckon he's done very well for himself. chris paul is very skilled and quite athletic. The problem with folks and these debates is, they narrow the subjects to one thing. High IQ is not just about passing the ball or knowing plays. Athleticism is not just limited to being able to jump high. CP3 has a good motor and strong endurance levels (that's part of being an athlete). he is also very agile, and doesn't get fatigued on the defensive end. That's all part of athleticism.
You need both, but you get in the door with raw talent. Player with raw talent and no iq vs a high iq player with no talent (can't shoot, can't dribble, can't guard, can't rebound, can't pass), it will be dumb to pick the high iq guy, because that can be trained. the high iq guy can always join the coaching staff. and the shaq and kobe take, i mean one could argue that when kobe was ball hogging at times he wasn't always using his iq.

If you're just a regular rotation guy, chances are you're not getting your play called a ton, you're not getting as many minutes, so your skill can help you get in games and get some minutes. Your iq may not help as much if you're always on the bench. It will help in how you work with your teammates , and if that's the case, then you should be planning a career as a coach after. To survive in any major sports league, you need a decent level of skill

So if I use Kobe and VC as player archetypes and have to pick one, Im taking a player like Kobe every time because a high IQ guy can utilize more tools to defeat a player who is equally or more athletic than him.

A high IQ player is far more valuable for a team than a highly skilled or highly athletic player
Your teammates can’t rely on your individual skill set or your athleticism
A high IQ translates to the game, the box score, the advanced stats, and your teammates in ways that simply being able to windmill dunk or hesi-hesi step back can’t
If you don’t have the ability to make anyone around better or help make the game easier for your teammates than you’re essentially going to be a one trick pony, especially if your entire game is predicated on athleticism
For example: if Russell Westbrook had half the IQ of LeBron or Joker he might have had a career few could rival because he has everything else

i look at it differently. IQ is valuable no doubt, especially for the great ones, the mikes the magic's brons, steph etc...Its an icing on the cake with the kind of skills they have. But your regular player who isn't an all star and is a rotational guy would need skill. You used Westbrook, Westbrook has played 10 plus years in the league and won an mvp off just skills alone. a player with no skills but a high IQ might not even get the chance to play in a game. you can't shoot, can't dribble, can't defend, can't score, can't pass, can't jump. You're not getting in the game.
And if you're good with plays, and know where your teammate should be on screens, no what to run when shot clock is winding down, you're better off just joining the coaching staff and helping to develop the guys. In every major sport, you need a decent level of skill. Even if you're just a very good spot up shooter, its a valuable skill to have. The great ones need both, its part of what helps their greatness, everyone else needs at least one or two transferable skills on the court

@@el84oro where did I say that it’s fine to have absolutely no relevant skills 🤣 like obviously ever basketball player in any professional league is going to have a base level skill set and some athleticism, like that is something that should be assumed based off the fact that we’re discussing players in the NBA
Russell Westbrook absolutely won an MVP and put together a multitude of historic seasons and performances throughout his long career
He has also never won on a big stage, historically he puts up absurd stats but his teams were mediocre and teams have found ways to exploit his liabilities time and time again…although he is a world class athlete, he is not that highly skilled and this is evident in his stats, you look at his career and you’re disappointed in the fact that he has never been able to translate his talents into winning basketball
Andre Igoudala was every bit the athlete or close to the athlete Westbrook is…he’s also a high IQ player and has won at the highest level, literally win finals MVP as the 3rd or 4th option 😂 and it’s not like he was particularly the most skilled offensive player, he isn’t a great shooter, but his IQ and understanding of what his teams needed from him game to game in order to win is what made him a future HOF
Melo is another guy who is extremely skilled and high level athleticism but he didn’t have the characteristics of a high IQ player, capable of helping his teammates play at a high level
The number one hallmark of a high IQ player is the ability to make those around you better; and there are different ways to do that but the effect is that you play winning basketball as a team and give yourself an opportunity to win every game
Again, damn near every single NBA player has some level of skills and athleticism; you can’t teach 6’9 🤣

Talent is a combination of skill and athleticism with skill being learned ability and athleticism being physical given ability. Some players talent is mostly athleticism and some others is mostly skill.
So the question then is would you rather have a player with high end talent/ability and little to no bb iq or a player with low to mid talent but very high iq?
I think what Antman was trying to get at that overall the talent level is higher now then back then as the skill required from every person on the court has increased and the athleticism overall has increased. Some can argue that the skill didn't increase just shifted. But the bb iq has definitely decreased over the decades and some skills like entry passes, posting up, in-between shotmaking, and off ball movement have drastically decreased as demand for other skills have increased.

Every great player who’s known for being athletic first also happens to be smart. MJ was smart, Kobe was smart, Lebron is smart, Wilt was smart. High IQ is a force multiplier. Even flatfooted, unathletic guys can go far with high IQ and a jump shot. No "bag" or handles, or dunks, just playbooks inside out, reading the floor offensively and defensively. That's why when you get a talented high IQ guy, it adds +/-20 wins to the team. I.e. Nash, Kidd, CP3, Lebron.
