      Being a former fellow Rust Belt victim? I feel your pain. All I can say is, car washes... Lots of car washes to get the salt back off. I learned the importance of undercarriage washes especially after blowing two brake lines when I needed them to stay un-blown up.
      And keep some rags in your car to dry your door seals afterwards if you do. Nothing as anticlimactic as getting the salt off, only to deal with doors that froze shut later.

    That was entertaining! I want to do that for my kids. The chemistry is pretty simple though. Salt being the electrolyte facilitates the faster exchange of ions. In the presence of two acids, H2O2 and CH3COOH, Iron oxidizes. Plus you have to consider that vinegar is 95% water, so more oxygen ions there for the iron to oxidize. That was awesome!

    • @PRonYouTube
      @PRonYouTube 3 года назад +5

      Would it have worked without the vinegar? What is the need for two acids?

    Nice! If you apply this process, and then heat the metal without exposure to oxygen (like in a hot water bath), you get a black oxide (magnetite) coating, AKA "bluing". You should do a video on that finish as well!

    Do you also know how to make rust disappear instantly? That's what I need, lol.
    Clear coat won't stick well to rust and will eventually, depending on humidity, peel off because the rusting process continues underneath.
    Use something that seals up the rust, like Owatrol oil, it has the same effect as rust converter but keeps the red-brownish color as it doesn't react with the rust, it just clogs up all it's pores.

  • @robertlombardo8437

    So, if I'm not mistaken, you can then convert the outer oxidized layer into black rust to keep non-stainless steel from rusting with exposure. By... boiling it, I believe?

    Hi , I'm doing quite similar, but I took hydrochloric acid (about 25%) and put a bunch of copper into it. After about 2 weeks I took the copper out and mix ca. 100ml with 3-4 l water. It starts to rust not so fast as yours but the copper will stop the rusting after some time and you don't have to finish with clear paint.

    I watched the video of using the rusting technique for the guitar sign. Have you come up with a way to rust the metal and protect it without causing it to darken or make it look wet?
    I need to make a smallish dining table in a beach / ocean themed setting. I've thought about cypress stumps, etc, but also using heavy anchor chain welded together organically so it looks like it draping down and piping up on the floor. I think I'd like to make it look rusted without the rust coming off on clothing, but don't want to make it look wet.
