    I would suggest doing a baking powder solution spray once your desired look is achieved. That will neutralize the acid and keep it from continuing to rust. Then clear coat.

      Baking soda isn't enough of a strong base to neutralize muriatic acid. A comparable solution would be to use lye (drain cleaner), and then rinse thoroughly with water because sodium hydroxide will leave behind salts once dried which will facilitate further oxidation over time

    Great video, some really good information provided here. I would also consider pump weed sprayer will hold up a lot better. Also for big jobs adding some food dye or weed spray dye helps visualise cover on larger applications and washes of fine. just do a small test first to make sure.

    You can just use vinegar, salt and hydrogen peroxide...you don't need to use acid.

      @@PatriotDIY The panels I did have a much more even coat of rust...really pretty. I'm not trying to give you grief, I just think there's a safer, cheaper, and better way that doesn't risk someone getting acid in their eyes.

    I wonder if once it dries doing a second go around to maybe rust the already etched top spots may give it a more rusty look.

    On the roughing up part could you use a wire wheel on a grinder or would that be to much

  • @marcusjames3035
    @marcusjames3035 Год назад +2

    Please use the guard on you grinder. When it wears down and breaks off it could stick in your neck. Easy death.

    Won't white vinegar do the same thing?

    • @LittleRayOfSnshine69
      @LittleRayOfSnshine69 11 месяцев назад +2

      Vinegar isn't as strong as muriatic acid and won't eat through the galvanizing. It will work on bare untreated steel.

    I’m struggling big time…. Galvanized turned black when I put acid on….. peroxide is not “rusting” fast…. Or at all for that matter

    • @PatriotDIY
      @PatriotDIY  7 месяцев назад

      What kind of metal is it? Did you sand the surface? How long did you leave the acid before adding the peroxide?

    • @andreabock6687

      @@PatriotDIY galvanized, corrugated roofing. Sand it down down wire wheel. Maratteck acid sat for 20 minutes.. lots of foaming and bubbles….

      I’m having the same issue and I got 700 sq feet worth. I got mine from metal mart and I’d bet the galvanizing is much better than that of Lowe’s or comparable. So there is a much greater reaction and the black is a result of that. I’m not sure what to do now..

      This video is part of an entire project series...so yes I spent a little time talking about how this metal is incorporated into the project......if you don't like it RUclips has this really nifty feature that allows you to skip ahead in the video......or spend that 3 minutes on finding yourself another video to watch 😉
