- This is my Stranger Things 4 Character Tier List, where I am ranking every character in Stranger Things Season 4. Who is your Best and Worst Character in this season? What is your Stranger Things Tier List?
It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time - and navigating the complexities of high school hasn't made things any easier. I have a new appreciation for Max thanks to this season. Sadie Sink did a phenomenal job portraying the character. Also Caleb had an equally great performance opposite her as Lucas. Tears.

The scene where Lucas is holding Max bawling as she's dying while Eleven is there also bawling has to be submitted for Emmy consideration. All 3 knocked that scene out of the park.
I feel like millie may have the spotlight over Sadie now, but her ego/ personality is gonna catch up to her. 5-10 years, the script will be flipped and Sadie will be a mega superstar. Im calling it. In a way, it’s already happening.
Character matters in the industry. You have to remain humble just like Sadie has. Can’t say the same for millie. Could be a case of becoming famous too early. Sadie has definitely been eased into it more. Nonetheless, fame is getting to millie and it’s showing. Why i think Sadie will be more successful in the long run

For me, One is on MVP level too. Never have I seen such a creepy character, Jamie Campbell Bower is phenomenal!

Jamie played beautifully, he had perform the role of a guard to the insanely twisted evil that doesn't just blame papa for what he has become. But rather who he has always been, is what most modern villain fail to deliver and trying to hard to justified them being bad like the joker movie.
Eleven should not have been MVP tier in my opinion is because she was repeating her previous arc where is is uncovering her power or potential with her sister. The plot was great, but she is just S and not really MVP since her performance was very same from previously season and the plot feels very drag out from being trauma alone.
I felt like this season should have kill steve to further push eddie as a character for the next season and get joe back to play the mental roles of vecna inflecting pain on the group that they have lost someone important and how eddie has to struggle to be what steve was for the group and not being able to put hims to regret not being able to be of more use to the team.
This way we can have the group lost of 2 main character, max and steve to feel the dramatic lost and danger vecna is and eleven blaming her self for not being strong enough or considering her papa wise words in regards to her not being strong enough.
let's see how season 5 would be, i can only hope it was worthy to kill of eddie and the ending lands and not end up like game of throne XD

Caleb McLaughlin crying in the final episode was probably the best high-stakes acting of the season. High emotional moments are where performances shine. Killed it.

Don't forget... Bob Newby died a hero, too. Without him, they couldn't have escaped Hawkins Lab. And he even says to Hopper, "Once I get that door open... don't wait for me. Get them out." He went out like a boss.
He really was a hero and it’s so sad he died so early in the show, sometimes I wonder how he would in season 3 or 4
@@valentinaa.e I could see him definitely helping Hop, Joyce, and Murray with closing the gate. Probably would have been helping Murray with shutting down everything, but more than likely would have scrambled to help Hop and Joyce once Grigori popped up and put everything in jeopardy. Unfortunately, I see him having his heroic death in an even more grisly fashion as he bravely saves Hopper when he's in danger by the machine. I would definitely give him the big moment of being the one to cause Grigori to go into the machine, but he would be pulled in by the Russian as well. Then they could still go with Joyce having to make that hard decision, but in complete shambles because of what she just witnessed and what she HAS to do to her best friend as Hop would be in the same position. Their relationship would most definitely be on the platonic level if Bob was around in this season, but could still lay the seeds of Hop realizing he's developing feelings for Joyce early on in the season. Just means things would have to go slightly different in season 4, no big kiss or anything like that between he and Joyce, but definitely could have planted seeds with Joyce's own developing feelings early on in season 4, which would ultimately lead to the season 5 payoff between the two of them.

The “Erica help” gives me shivers it’s so real and it was completely improvised Caleb is incredibly talented MVP 100%
dustin is EXTREMELY important to this season and the last season. honestly without him, most of our main characters would be dead. he has saved everyone's asses numerous times and his intelligence is to thank for it. he's really the brains of any group of characters he's teamed up with for the season, and he's good for teamwork because while he's just a kid who can't really do much, he knows what to do and has the other characters helping him execute his genius plans. all of dustin's observations are based in science and physics which is why he's always so pissed when the others second guess him. of course he's right, the laws of physics literally back him up every single time. sure he's a kid, but damn if he knows what he's talking about. and he's a bit egotistical about it, but if you were the one who was always doubted despite always being right every time while not having the energy to put up with everyone's bullshit, you'd have an ego too. he doesn't get enough credit for how many times he's saved hawkins.

I totally agree with the ranking, but Lucus needed to be on the mvp status. The first half of the series, he was on his own self discovery. Trying to fit in be a normal teenager. He wanted to be popular, and by doing that he ended up distancing himself from the team. However, everytime where it was time to show his true colors. He ended up siding with his friends and not the jocks he so Desperately wanted to be. (which is S tier material), but on the second half of the show he took it up a notched. He fully embraced who he was and had his heart truly broken when max died. Caleb performance had so many layers and he landed the ending!
as much as I respect your opinion I think Lucas was s-tier this season, he was great and played a big role which is why he should be s-tier but if anyone who had an important role was an mvp everyone on that list would be an mvp except Jasons friends(except the one that got Chrissy crumbled) Lucas was great but he was not an map in my opinion
When I saw the first episode of the show and met Eddie, I thought I was going to hate him. He seemed like such a corny character to me, but a little bit after Dustin and the crew found him in hiding, I felt him grow on me. By the end of Vol. 1 he was my favorite character, and I had the worst anxious feeling that Vol. 2 was not going to treat him very nicely. Was never more upset to be correct. I think the Duffer brothers made a big mistake by getting rid of Eddie, it felt like he could just be so much more if he made it to season 5. No one will ever compare. Rip to the Hawkins freak

The whole older ”kids” group in Hawkins were, together with Max, definitely the highlights for me this season. My only real disappointment with this season was that the group with Mike (except Eleven) didn’t get much to do and whenever they cut to their story I mostly wanted to get back to what was going on in Hawkins
Mike had a good moment in the last ep when he say he loves El, and help her beat Vecna

Agreed , max needs more air time . The Robin Character seems very forced and does not really work well . They kill off a much better character like eddy and ignore Max but force Robin character onto the audience .
I feel like since this show started with Will, it would be so satisfying if he stepped back into the spotlight for S5. He and El have the most history with the Upside down, so imagine how hype it would be if they worked together to take Vecna down. Will using his connections to spy on Vecna so they constantly have the upper hand. It also makes sense from a storytelling perspective because both Henry and Will have been described as very sensitive boys and they both seemingly have a lot of artistic talent. And you can also flesh out his confession to Mike and reveal that El didn't comission the painting or feel the way he said. That it was all Will. Hopefully his story ends in a satisfying way. Let Will Byers be happy.
how does el have history with the upside down? other than just opening the gate, I agree will and el should team up but I don't agree that el has some of the most experience with the upside-down, id say Nancy and will have the most experience, Nancy has been to the upside down 4 times for sure and I might be missing 1 or 2 times but I know its for sure at least 4 times
I really liked Jason in Volume 1. He had way too much influence over the town, but he was somewhat well intentioned. In Volume 2, however, I thought they were gonna redeem him and continue his arc in Season 5. They did not do that, and I was disappointed that he died, despite it being a creative way for him to go out.
Max was definitely my favorite this season.

Jason was the absolute PR'ICK of the show! I hate him, glad he got what he deserved. There were absolutely no redeeming properties about him.
I have a real loathing for people who jump to conclusions without all the facts and information.
He literally saw his teammate broken up in front of him...AND EDDIE! Yet this M0R0N still blames Eddie for a death that he actually witnessed happened.

Doesn't Max's full death mean the end of the world essentially? Like, the only reason the destruction stopped was because Eleven got her heart to start again. I feel like she, along with Will, is gonna be key to stopping the total destruction. Though I do wonder how a time jump fits in to all this.
this would be so good for wills character since he’ll have someone who understands his trauma better than the other characters
Will is gonna be the main focus of season 5 so i’m sure he’s gonna have a lot to do with stopping the destruction. Max is confirmed to be brain dead so I think El is gonna have to somehow enter Vecna’s mind. 001 has told El before that the people he kills still exist in his mind so i believe she’s gonna enter it to look for her. I’m honestly just scared that if Max does come back, she will have lost all of her memories and not know anyone.
Personally I like Erica’s character arc where in s3 she only helped Robyn, Dustin & Steve because she was getting something in return while in s4 she helps the team out the kindness of her heart and is willing to do anything for her brother and her new friends so hopefully in s5 she gets something good going for her.
Sadie’s character arc this season is the best thing I have ever seen in television, hands down, since she didn’t get that Emmy nomination this year, I hope she gets one next year for episode 9
Wouldn't say it's the best thing I've seen on television, but yeah, absolutely incredible. Honestly after this season she's definitely my favorite character.
Jason’s character is so well done, as much as you hate him, you have to admit that the actor who plays this man did the most wonderful job in the entire season imo, the second he finds out his girl was murdered he starts going insane, and when he sees Patrick die that was like the final nail in the coffin
Lumax is the MVP! Everybody talked about Max all season and deservedly so but Lucas gave a quietly phenomenal performance since episode 1 and in the finale knocked it out the park! They both should be everyone’s MVP

@@ev2155 Max, Vecna are the most popular characters of the 4th season cause those characters had the best scenes by far, Eddie was just phenomenal, Nancy and Steve did a lot too. S4 Lucas was nothing compared to any of the characters that just i mencioned.

In terms of acting, Joseph Quinn absolutely killed it. The guy is on another level.

i'm so glad to see someone appreciating joyce. she's my favourite character, has been since season 1 alongside hopper and will. needless to say i'm very happy about the jopper situation (i've been waiting 7 years!) i always see people praise david harbour (rightfully so) and hopper but they always put joyce/winona lower when hopper as a character is at his best with joyce. it just goes to show how david and winona's relationship translates on-screen - so thank you for recognising joyce within that as well.
I think u pretty much nailed this list,but I have to say Lucas was definitely an MVP candidate,his storyline and growth was huge this season,and his acting in the last episode was pretty damn epic!

I have to agree. In Volume 2 Caleb/Lucas turned up and delivered. His scenes with Sadie and Millie alone should be considered for Emmy nomination. All 3 of them knocked it out of the park. And not to mention Lucas as Vecna. Austin B should reconsider his ranking.

Caleb is the best male actor on the show, but ever since season 1 the character of Lucas has not been used to Caleb's talent. In S3 even Erica seemed to be more important to the plot than Lucas, Duffers have been doing him dirty lowkey.
Nancy Wheeler has always been a badass since season 1, great character arc and easy to be underestimated based on how she looks and her gender, but blows everyone and everything literally away 🥰

Brenner was a fantastic character because although what he was doing was evil, there were shreds of humanity in him that kept me from outright hating him.
I totally get that. In the beginning of the show he was a good villain that didn’t get too violent (unlike other villains in shows) but in the shock collar scene you could really see the pure evil and violence in the character and that in the comparison of his scenes with 10 was truly chilling
This list really cemented for how me how amazing the writing for this show truly is. The shear amount of likable and relatable characters they have developed is amazing. Even characters that literally JUST got introduced this season, you are written brilliantly. Stranger Things will go down as one of best pieces of media in the century.
Lucas was also in the MVP tier in my opinion his performance was top tier next to Max
I agree. Lucas is definitely MVP tier. He also shows his loyalty to his friends and never really turned his back on them.
I like your list after watching vol.2. However, I would move Jonathan, Will, and Mike to the B tier solely due to the lack of character development. These three had been sidelined, and even the little things they came into were not enough to elevate their status. Argyle and Eddie were new, yet they did more and were a great addition to the group. Erica has only grown since the last season, and this year, she became a significant player.
Mike just had a major development that has been boiling ever since he met El.
Mike is one of the worst characters in show hasn’t been good since season 1 if I’m honest

This has be my favorite session so far. I can’t wait to see session 5. I’m hoping for a session 6 with Erica and her friends playing DD.
Steve, Hopper, Robin, Eddie, Max, Nancy, Vecna, Eleven, Joyce and Dustin are my favorites as characters this season. My favorites overall though are still Steve and Hopper. Especially Steve, he’s my favorite character. He went from jerk to nice guy and I love it. I really hope he gets his 6 children. (Not with Nancy Though he can do better, no shade to her.) I’m so happy he didn’t die.

He cares so much for them all. U can see this especially in EP.4 when they were chilling in the car while Max was reading her letter to Billy and then he’s like alright we’ve waited Long Enough.
Love how Vickie is so similar to Robin, we just never got to see that side of her. When they’re making PB&J’s Vickie just has verbal diarrhoea like Robin.
Max definitely is the MVP of season 4. So well deserved, her acting was phenomenal.
I could relate so much to Argyle, not really his character perse but just the fact that I have the exact same hair as him lol. It's honestly a bit refreshing to see a fellow long haired dude having a role in such a huge mainstream show, besides being a metalhead or a knight in a fantasy show :') I'll give him props for that alone.
When Argyle says you need to be clean to enter the mind, that was one of the funniest delivered lines in the whole season.
I don’t really think Jason as a jerk, he became aggressive and angry only because he was heartbroken after Chrissy’s death. He did everything he did to get justice for his girlfriend, don’t get me wrong sometimes he was a bit over aggressive but other than that he wasn’t all that bad aside from the part where he tried to kill Lucas

I agree with your ranking all the cast acting has improved so much, I love this finale so much.
I've never agreed with everything on a tier list more lol. One thing I would probably change is bumping Steve and Lucas to mvp. This is one of those rare shows where I like and am invested in pretty much all of the characters in it though.
Agreed, in this show I love pretty much every single character dearly. I’ve yet to find myself doing the same for other shows. Stranger Things writes their characters phenomenally.
Yesss Eddie is my favorite newest character to the show but im glad Argyle is also getting his respect, I loved what his character brought to the table
Your tier list is actually the closest to mine!! :D The only changes I'd make are:
- Lucas, Nancy, and Murray at the MVP Tier.
- Robin at B Tier.
- Swap Jake and Jason.
- Callahan and Powell at C Tier.
Amazing list bro, loved the reason behind the rankings and where they ended up. It's just such a shame that Sadie Sink got robbed from the Emmys after she gave an amazing performance. I mean she nailed everything, she makes me cry of happiness when we see her good flashbacks then makes me cry for real when she "dies". I say that because I think she will come back, and I wish we had an answer to her coma now because if she was dead I could save myself the time and choose not to come back for next season lol. And I'm not just saying this because I'm biased and I have a major crush on her. It's ok I was born in 04 she's only like a year and a half older lol. But amazing job!

@@smallfwy3438 for all that sadly could be true , but with the kas theory going around , for all we know he could possibly have a chance on coming back , cause one the idea of him coming back but working for vecna for a few episodes is personally a really good idea ! plus , i believe that eddie has a LOT of potential and i doubt they’re gonna just let that potential go to waste .. of course i say that and know they’ve done it before with characters like bob and alexei , but !! who knows , we just gotta wait til 2024
While it sucks he died I think it's better to leave him dead as otherwise his arc would have quite a bit of impact taken from it, and seeing the others, especially Dustin, cope with his death could be interesting.
Steve deserves his own tier at the top. He's the caretaker for every major character in the show.
I agree with Eddie on MVP tier, liked his character since day one.
Max is THE MVP, each time she's in the scene everyone (Vecna, Lucas, Eleven) shine brighter. We kind of get that vibe a bit too with Eddie but not as much as with Max.
Jason I would have put him in another cuz his action do impact what is happening in the story. If the position of the murder teen is important to maximaxe the supergate then Jason is responsible for putting Patrick over Lovers Lake and is surely responsible for putting Max in a coma and opening the supergate since without him Lucas would have been able to put Kate Bush back on and prevent things for going too far with that part of the plan.
To me Jason is pratically Vecna's MVP and that's why he should be higher than just "jerk"

Lucas better be number 1. He and Gaten gave the performance of their life and they made this season.
Okay a lot of people disagree with me when I say this to them but hear me out, when first watching season 4 and seeing the flashbacks to the lab I honestly really liked 001 as a character, he was very kind to 011 with even helping her with her escape, but I honestly think apart from vecna and everything that happened in the lab he probably was on my top tier of characters before episode 7.

I get emotional whenever I think of Hopper. He's one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, so I'm very pleased you put him as MVP
Hopper is the best ST character and David Harbour’s performance is just phenomenal
I'm happy you put Argyle on A tier. That's where I would put him, but he seems to be really underrated by fans. I think he added a lot of depth to Jonathan's character. To see that depth, you need to read between the lines, but it's still very much there. And just the fact that he befriended Jonathan, who's never actually had a friend in the entire show, is reason enough to be an A tier for me.
And I'm happy about Lucas being S tier. He's also underrated, but so important to the show.
Murray, Robin and Eddie were my top three. Stuff with Eleven get slow at times but her arc is enormous in this season too.

Max was by far the best character in this season. I didn't really like her in season 2, but in season 4 she was outstanding.

Hopper has been my favorite character from the very beginning. He's a badass, he's pretty funny, his story is sad and easy to sympathize with, and I just love David Harbour as an actor.
My favourites are Joyce (Winona Ryder is always a win), Steve, Eddie, Dustin and Max

Honestly, my list is pretty dang similar. Eddie might be lower cause I think we missed an opportunity to get to know him better, but Max is on top for sure.
Oh, ok. Well, I watched the season with a lot of friends and have discussed it with a lot of people and we all agreed that Mike had some very poor character development, same with Will and Johnathan. Although I want to like the characters as much as I liked him in season 1 and 2, I feel like the characters have just been getting worse and worse sadly throughout the seasons. Certain characters have there highs and lows in each season, but if you though Mike was great this season that’s cool I guess.
I’m waiting for Season 5 in the Upside Down where they meet Vecna and then Eddie appears as “Kas the Bloody handed” and there’s a whole emotional montage of Dustin and Eddie’s memories and then they all fight 🔥
I’m excited to see new characters next season!

The tierlist is great, but I fell Jonathan, will and mike should have been in the S tier. I know they hadn’t play that much of a role in season 1, but if they hadn’t helped eleven with setting up the bath tub, max would be… you know.

Lucus is Goated, Nancy’s character was cool but her love life was rlly messing up my opinion, steve for sure Goated, survived getting his side eaten out and still whooped ass but that’s where I’ll stop, amazing show(also max Goated to)
Lucas should be MVP status. I have no clue why he’s always overlooked. I mean he proved his loyalty to his friends even though he wanted to be popular with the jocks. His acting was phenomenal when Max pretty much died in his arms. The emotions he had just came out so real and pure. Plus that fight with him and Jason was crazy. So much character growth for my man Lucas. Definitely one of the better characters. Also shout out to Max’s character. She really carried season 4 on her back.

Max went from a B or c tier character to at least in an A-S tier character this season.
I wanted more Vicky so bad, I started watching “Anne with an E” and I am loving life
I definitely would have liked to have seen more of Englund too! The audience would have loved it and honestly, I think it’s disrespectful to ask a legend to come on for a quick cameo. Though I’m sure he doesn’t think so. He’s well known for being a sweet, humble and very professional man. If possible, I’d love to see more of him in the last season but I don’t know how they’d work it in.

Overall, a great group of character actors. I think that there is not enough talk about Milly's great acting performance as we have taken for granted and now expect it each season from her. ST 4 (S) was another A performance for her. Max (Sadie) was an S , Lucas an A - his interaction with Sadie was great. Nancy - wow best performance of series for her. Noah did not have enough screen time but he gave an A performance in the poster scene with Finn Mike monologue was done well but again not enough of Finn in this season. Eddie and Jamie Bowers (VECNA) get A and S, respectively. Least liked Maya but only because she was casted as a space cadet.
Murray with a flamethrower would be a fun Funko Pop.
I’d say not seeing a over abundance of Vecna scenes gives every one of those scenes so much more weight and I don’t think 001 and vecnas characters should have been separated
Chrissy is clear S-tier. For what she was meant to do she is literally perfect. Amazing chemistry w/ Eddie, the ed, her mom, like they had SO much going on and she only existed for about 30 min. Then she died without any of it being resolved? That’s tragic. Absolute tragedy. Perfect character.
Fred was a really good character tbh, he may have had a very small amount of screen time, but his screen time was very very cool. He was kinda funny and very nerdy which made him funny. I like Chrissy a lot but I liked Fred a bit more
I put the hopper just above the eddie just because we saw him for about 70 minutes, they're both my favorite characters.

I think people misunderstand what the duffer brothers were trying to do with the jock characters. They aren't just "jocks" who are sociopathic people hunters. They are very much a mirror of the main gang itself. From their perspective, they saw a girl they cared for get absolutely disfigured and murdered, and the clear person to blame was Eddie. It was his trailer. He was part of a nerd club they didn't understand which had hellfire in their name. And he ran away. As soon as they got close to him the same thing happened to his dear friend. He was heartbroken. Confused. A literal teen. And angry. Nearly everything he did was justifiable from his point of view and much like the gang in every other season, they were just trying to protect their town and the people that lived within it from demonic forces.
Great list. The only thing I would have changed is putting Mike & Argyle on the B tier, because Mike; I wasn't as big of a fan of his character this season, the only thing I loved from him this season was the monologue in the finale, and Argyle; I just wasn't as big of a fan of his type of humor as some others, but in the final two episodes he was much better than before and I enjoyed his presence more (But I really don't want him to return to Season 5, that would be pushing it.

It’s funny how when he saw Karen wheeler the first thing he thought of is Nancy instead of mike
I feel like Will kind of took a back seat after they saved him from the mind control in season 2.
He is stepping up in season 5. I feel like after being in the limelight for 2 seasons, the Duffer brothers have reserved his character for something we arent expecting for the season finale.
I’m basic and really like Steve and Eddie, but Henry/One is easily my favorite. A lot of people who know me might think it’s name bias since my utmost favorite character of all time is Henry Emily from FNaF, but I genuinely really like One. He’s easily one of the most interesting characters to me from anything ever. I love analyzing his character and figuring out his motivations, and it’s interesting because you can almost relate to his motives and understand them. Super interesting character, good villain, I think he’s neat. I do believe a redemption arc could work out, too, which adds to the intriguing factor.

i'd put Dustin in the MVP tier and honestly maybe lucas thats debateable and that russian guy who helped joyce and hopper up to A or S but this is a really good list
Argyle had a purpose for the writing and tone but I found his character overly one note. Good luck having anything dramatic with him around.
