just hearing how passionate she is and her attention to detail (even if you can't see the little details, like she said) is so inspiring and is seriously making me think that I want to get into job for costuming shows and stuff, wow this is honestly my new favourite video ever
I love these comments because it's no accident. Jenna, I hope this ignited your passion and takes off like a rocket. You'll do great! The costuming can really make or break a show, movie or character. If you liked it, pursue it!
She seems a little regretful that Max's light blue outfit was "rushed" but I think it works perfectly for her and especially those intense scenes where she's wearing it. The brightness of the blue sweater is kind of an ironic counterpart to her dark mood and it's almost like her inner bright personality jumping out despite her mood. So when the song hits at the end of Episode 4, it all comes together. Also looks really great with her red hair
yeah and i feel like since her family doesn't have a lot of money, she would have to do with the clothes she had and might not have had that many dark clothes. so being sad in bright turquoise makes sense for me haha.
I feel like the whole episode where max escapes vecna, the drama and emotion, the kate bush song swelling with orchestra added, and the upside down crashing around her, that turquoise jacket with the yellow stripe and her red hair in the ponytail, walkman on her ears, is as iconic as Alice in Wonderland's blue dress
i did think it was odd she was wearing such bright colors while grieving but i think it really worked to make her stand out in episode 4 and introduce her as a more important character
Her and her team are VITAL in this show. I’m really glad she gets to explain what they do because it’s soooooo important and I think we usually take some of these details for granted.
the eleven point makes sense, so many people were saying her outfits were awful or messy but it makes perfect sense for her to be mismatched as she tries to mimic fashion and understand how to dress
I thought the same. When I watched it, I understood right away: Joyce was a typical 80s single mum, without much money and was very function over fashion. Without Max to help her with fashion, she was just wearing whatever Joyce handed down to her or picked out for her. Joyce famously has a relaxed functional look and wouldn’t know about fashion either. When I was a kid in the 90s I was so upset that my mum didn’t know how to help me with my make up etc…because she doesn’t wear any except lipstick on special occasions 😂 She was very like Joyce but now I’m an adult, I see how young my mum looks for her age 😂💖
The attention to detail is just extraordinary. Bravo to Amy and the entire costume department on curating looks that create a truly immersive experience!
The Eddie Munson outfit is incredibly accurate. My brother used to wear almost the exact same combo, he called it his 'armor' because the leather and denim fused together over highschool into one piece that could almost take a bullet. The only bit I'm usure about is the reeboks. I would have gone with Doc Martins, or converse I think. Reebok is too sporty.
I think Doc Martin 's would have suited his style and been authentic to the times but perhaps he couldn't afford them, seeing he's living in a trailer with his single father. I knew lots of ppl in highschool who mixed n matched items, especially after the Madonna article leaked that she shopped at a thrift store to get her look. I also had friends who were dressed by their parents and had to live up to those standards and still more that they wanted different clothing than their parents could afford too so had to make due.
If you look at pics of Metallica or Megadeth or other bands in the 80s they're often wearing sporty looking sneakers, especially hi-tops (pretty sure I've spotted some Reeboks and definitely some Nikes) so the Reeboks didn't seem out of place to me - I immediately thought of James Hetfield or Dave Mustaine when I saw them, though I can't account for whether they're accurate to what metalheads wore in the Midwest
My brother was a high schooler and a metal head in 86 and Eddie's look is spot on including the white sneakers, preferably high tops. All of the pictures of him and his friends and if you look back at group pictures of metal bands they mostly wear sporty white sneakers. I believe the docs back then were more of a thing for the punks
I appreciate the fact that the characters in this show actually dress like people who are living in a small town in the 80's. A lot of the shows and movies that are set in the 80's nowadays use a stylized, modern version of that era of fashion.
@@kiwiicy honestly for the rink-o-mania scene i understand why the outfits for a lot of the extras as well as angela and her friends were the latest, most glamorized clothes of the era. that scene in particular was meant to make eleven feel small and alienated, more than she had felt before and was the height of angela tormenting her. compared to eleven’s mismatched patterns and hand-me-downs it makes sense why everyone else would be wearing pristine, perfect 80’s fashion.

Can I say big props to the show for giving the costume department a good budget?? A lot of times producers don’t realise how much clothes can help to tell a story unless it’s like a fashion thing, with a show like this I wouldn’t have been surprised if they barely paid attention to the clothes (like make them look like they are in the 80s and that’s it) but they did and it’s really cool to see.
Great example of what you describe is The Goldbergs or Fresh Off The Boat. Neither of those shows feel like they take place in their respective time periods lol
I loved Vecna's look. So white and clean. And also kinda body fitting. So when his posture is so upright and straight, he really looked like a guy that couldn't even kill a fly. He seemed so unreal in the first scenes with him.
It's funny how different perceptions can be😂 I found his fair and pristine look to be unnerving, especially considering they were in secret facility, and the way they matched his clothes with bright blue eyes was almost sinister for me. I think maybe it's because a lot of media recently make light blue eyes look very intense and scary.
@@tameriz1280 I’m in the same boat. It was weird because I had read something about “a kind orderly” but the presentation of the character was setting off alarm bells for me. Funny she regretted Max's light blue outfit thinking it was too bright and I can't imagine her NOT having that outfit on now. The color and brightness made her stick out JUST enough in episode 4 and gave her a look that wasn't so bland and forgettable that it really makes an iconic look for her in that scene.
The attention to detail is insane! When my mum and I were watching season 2, she said that she had the exact same lunchbox as Will! Made her so happy to see it 😊
As a big fan of 80's metal/rock, Eddie's outfit was nothing short of awesome. Especially loved the patches and badges for bands like Dio, WASP, and Accept that many many people will never have heard of today but were popular in the 80's. Those were a very accurate and awesome little detail. The only thing I would've loved to have seen in the show is some Dokken!
I don't think Eddie would have been a Dokken fan....but no Anthrax???!! C'mon . if metal head boys didn't wear a MC jacket with a Levi vest...they wore a grey sweatshirt hoodie zip up with a Levi demon jacket with pins and maybe a custom painted back
I love how she’s making sure everything was authentic and perfectly detailed so no crazy fans have to point out any wrong things. She seems so good at her job!
She's brilliant at what she does. I'm not even into this aspect of how the shows made. But the intention to details are great in the show. An This woman deserves her flowers. 👏
This is one of the reasons why people love Stranger Things. Because every part of the crew goes extreme on details. Sometimes even big budget movies don't pay this much attention to detail.
I couldn’t literally watch Amy talk about every detail of every outfit for all 4 seasons on repeat!! her passion and dedication to make the characters come to life is truly admirable bravo to her whole team as well !!!
It's funny to hear that she thought the Max's sweatshirt was too bright. I thought it was absolutely perfect for the episode and an outfit I can see people recreating for cons and Halloween
as a stylist on much smaller budgets and shorter lead times Im eternally envious hearing these professionals just talk about customizations. I'd love to have the opportunity to do all these super detailed projects in my lifetime
her jobs seems so fun yet challenging at the same time cus i'm imagining the characters wearing something different and it would just shift the entire feel of the scenes
i love analyzing outfits in shows/movies and I love hearing the careful thought process of the actual costume designer(s). the scantron shirt for dustin is the most brilliant piece imo, I didn't notice it too much in the show but the way they're thinking about him coloring it in when he's bored and stuff.. soo cool!! in addition to what she says about mike buying part of his outfit at the airport- i also like the idea that it was coordinated to be in el's mentioned favorite colors - purple and yellow. intentional or unintentional it's sweet :)
It's so fun hearing which outfits were vintage and which were created by scratch, it's all blends in so well! Still trying to track down the green hat Argyle wears for my husband, he's been so jealous of it since it popped up on screen lol

It's really interesting to see how many tiny details are in these outfits to make them truly look like something a person owns, like how the zipper on Eddie's jacket broke, and he's too poor to get it fixed, so he just clumsily tried to fix it himself.
That’s adorable that crewmembers’ kids made Argyle’s bracelets. I would’ve been so proud as a kid if I could’ve made a bracelet for a hit show. 😄☺️ very sweet.
This is so impressive! I really like the introduction of the 80's dark metal look along with the preppie and pastel 80's. And I also love Murray's handknit and gold chain. Just perfect.
Thank goodness this interview is so long because I could easily listen to her talk about this topic for another hour! She's so passionate and creative and fun!
I'm glad you guys made an entire video about the costume designer for Stranger Things. I've always been curious about what that whole process looked like.
One of my fave things about the show is the attention to detail of the costumes. I was in 9th grade in 1986 and pretty much dressed exactly like Nancy Wheeler. The stripes, the boots, the belts. Really miss 80s fashion
While watching the season w/ my family, we were actually BLOWN AWAY with the outfits!! We kept saying how Mike and Robin had outfits that we’d wear ourselves 😅 robins yellow leaf oversized shirt and Mike in the desert w/ the white shirt and converse were outfits we kept talking about repeatedly !! the fashion definitely stood out to us ❤
The attention to detail is so accurate and pristine. I had no idea that so much thought goes into costuming and this video has got me really intrigued! Love this
I had no clue I needed this video! But this has been such an interesting new take on the characters and the story of the show! Wow i loved every minute of this! Thanks for doing this!
Yeah and her part for Mike was short too. Judging by the fact that she said she put triangles for Robin’s outfit to show off her lgbt side, it’s safe to say she did the same for Mike
They did such a great job! I even noticed the barrette that Susie is wearing were the same we used to wear and even make. They are dead on with the fashion that it made me so nostalgic and I think that is why I love this show so much!
Great to hear the costume designer cares about how cold the actors are on set!! You hear so many horror stories about actors suffering in those chilly filming locations.
I considered a costume design degree for a bit because I wanted to design for broadway, and musicians... ended up going the menswear and fashion business route but that's a passion I'd love to steer back to. the research and attention to detail look so fun!
Yesss do it! I just graduated as a theatre designer (set/costume/makeup design) and it’s been so much fun! This video especially makes me SO EXCITED omg.
Nope. I'm here because I just, having never watched the show before, binged seasons 1, 2, 3 and 4 in two weeks and don't know what to do with my life when I ran out. 😄
This is so interesting. The detail is amazing. Especially when it came to Eddie and the zippers and Dustin’s shirt. When watching the show you look over these details. Now when I rewatch the series I’ll be looking for all of this.
I was a sophomore in high school in 1986 and also in marching band. Can I just say kudos upon kudos to these talented teams who created all these 80s looks. Y’all totally nailed it.
I love that Elvi's outfit in the thumbnail shows her connection to Joyce. They respect and also stepdaughter relationship. As you can see in season 4 finale, when they met again, and they were holding hands when they noticed the clouds boiling up.
I love how they made Eddie's outfits like he did it himself and worn like she said, i love thinking about how he would've thought about asking Wayne for a Dio vest and then seeing stuff at the store for a few dollars and making it himself 🥹
This is what I call attention to detail! It is perfection. Blows my mind how attentive they are to the point of printing their own fabrics to have the correct material for costumes.
i love learning about these tiny little details that they have put so much thought into yet not many people appreciate. i hope we get another video like this for vol 2 or season 5 🙏
I like how El actually dresses the same as Will and Jonathan now that she's adopted. Good attention to detail
Will wears a lot of plaid in all seasons so seeing her now wearing plaid too it's giving siblings energy hahah
el’s outfit is same with joyce, long polos and sweats, her hairstyle is same with joyce too, shaggy hairstyle
Joyce is a single mom who’s just moved across the country who’s now got three teenage children - go out and buy a whole new gender specific wardrobe for El? Nah, give her Will and Johnathan’s hand me downs! It makes perfect sense!

She's brilliant at what she does. I'm not even into this aspect of how the shows made. But the intention to details are great in the show. An This woman deserves her flowers. 👏
I need 5 more hours of this please!! I LOVE learning about wardrobe and costume design! It's the most fascinating field ever!
This is one of the reasons why people love Stranger Things. Because every part of the crew goes extreme on details. Sometimes even big budget movies don't pay this much attention to detail.
I wish they made this after vol 2. I want to see her talk about their hawkins battle outfits
Picked up on the Ally Sheedy look immediately after I saw Eden. Very very cool attention to detail, this is why I love this show 👌
Yes and Molly Ringwald too!
@@purplepixie274 i knew vickie reminded me of someone! now i know lol
When st is over they need a museum w the props and costumes its too iconic
THATS SUCH A GOOD IDEA OMG
i was so impressed with Eddie's look in the show and loved the little details like the chain on the jacket cuff
as a stylist on much smaller budgets and shorter lead times Im eternally envious hearing these professionals just talk about customizations. I'd love to have the opportunity to do all these super detailed projects in my lifetime
I think it’s good the Max jacket was so bright because it was the most iconic scene of Vol. 1 so I suspect there will be many cosplays of it!
her jobs seems so fun yet challenging at the same time cus i'm imagining the characters wearing something different and it would just shift the entire feel of the scenes
i love analyzing outfits in shows/movies and I love hearing the careful thought process of the actual costume designer(s). the scantron shirt for dustin is the most brilliant piece imo, I didn't notice it too much in the show but the way they're thinking about him coloring it in when he's bored and stuff.. soo cool!!
in addition to what she says about mike buying part of his outfit at the airport- i also like the idea that it was coordinated to be in el's mentioned favorite colors - purple and yellow. intentional or unintentional it's sweet :)
11:23 He really is the perfect Eddie.
It's so fun hearing which outfits were vintage and which were created by scratch, it's all blends in so well! Still trying to track down the green hat Argyle wears for my husband, he's been so jealous of it since it popped up on screen lol
I'm currently sewing Eleven's milkshake dress and this video really helped me
Omg! How is it going? 😊
Where did you get the fabric and the pattern? I love that dress also
@@bertam.7726 Well the fabric is just a sheet i found and since I'm not a professional I'm just a beginner i got some fabric dye at a school supplie store for a cheap price. The dress is going great! Thanks for asking 🙂
Sorry to disappoint you if you needed the exact same fabric
@@SoakedInBleach6269x oh but you didn't disappoint at all! Thank you so much for your reply, it really inspired me to try to recreate her dress myself too ☺️ I had seen some replicas being sold but the fabric seemed horrible, using a sheet and dye is a brilliant idea!
Your clothes were awesome, so fit for the 80’s look. Love how Mike’s mom dressed in the show. She was all fun 80’s too. Her rock 80’s curly hair style was so on point. Enjoyed the seeing costumes brought me back to my time. Thank you.
I love how detailed this is. Like a really good long featurette on the 2nd disc of a DVD set used to be.
Imagine casually selling your shirt on Poshmark and it ends up being worn by Sadie Sink in Stranger Things
It's really interesting to see how many tiny details are in these outfits to make them truly look like something a person owns, like how the zipper on Eddie's jacket broke, and he's too poor to get it fixed, so he just clumsily tried to fix it himself.
The clothes made me super nostalgic esp El’s mall outfits when Max took her shopping. The bright colors and print made me think of when I was a kid
I love how creative all of the outfits were like they were all unique to the character & they didn't just pick an outfit
as a costume designer for theater myself, I'm always overjoyed to see videos like this! a costumer's job is never truly done.
That’s adorable that crewmembers’ kids made Argyle’s bracelets. I would’ve been so proud as a kid if I could’ve made a bracelet for a hit show. 😄☺️ very sweet.
Amy is just a great ambassador for her craft and the level of collaboration necessary to bring this level of media to our screens.
i love the fact that they have so much dedication to creating these here outfits! well done
I grew up in the 80s. The costume and set design is so good that it makes me feel and taste the 80s. That is the highest praise I can give.
This is so impressive! I really like the introduction of the 80's dark metal look along with the preppie and pastel 80's. And I also love Murray's handknit and gold chain. Just perfect.
I love how passionate she is about her job. This lady definitely contributes a lot to the show.
Thank goodness this interview is so long because I could easily listen to her talk about this topic for another hour! She's so passionate and creative and fun!
Thank you for showing us the artistry, dedication, and creativity that goes into the costume design. The single most underrated assignment.
I'm glad you guys made an entire video about the costume designer for Stranger Things. I've always been curious about what that whole process looked like.
Can we have whole show with Amy talking about costiums? Maybe she can also talk about the ones she hasn't made? I could be listening her for hours
We kept saying how Mike and Robin had outfits that we’d wear ourselves 😅 robins yellow leaf oversized shirt and Mike in the desert w/ the white shirt and converse were outfits we kept talking about repeatedly !! the fashion definitely stood out to us ❤
This is the most impressive part of the show for me, the fashion, and the graphics, places like the mall. they NAILED it.
Nancy's looks are always my favourite. Her purple dress is just stunning
The attention to detail is so accurate and pristine. I had no idea that so much thought goes into costuming and this video has got me really intrigued! Love this
As someone who grew up in the 80's, I love the attention to detail in this show.
I had no clue I needed this video! But this has been such an interesting new take on the characters and the story of the show! Wow i loved every minute of this! Thanks for doing this!
the level of detail for each character's fits is truly insane omg
This was EXCELLENT! She was so in-depth with each character.
22:30 sobbing and throwing up at how briefly she talked about will. Maybe she talked more about him but they cut it out for spoilers.
Bro you sobbed and threw up because of that. What are you??? 😭😭
Yeah and her part for Mike was short too. Judging by the fact that she said she put triangles for Robin’s outfit to show off her lgbt side, it’s safe to say she did the same for Mike
The detail in these scenes is amazing. Yes the acting, sets and what not are important but all the little details are incredible 👌🏻
I love that Max's outfit that she regrets ended up being one of the most iconic of the whole season.
They did such a great job! I even noticed the barrette that Susie is wearing were the same we used to wear and even make. They are dead on with the fashion that it made me so nostalgic and I think that is why I love this show so much!
Great to hear the costume designer cares about how cold the actors are on set!! You hear so many horror stories about actors suffering in those chilly filming locations.
i'm currently studying for my bachelor in costumedesign, videos like this fuel my dedication to end up working in this field🧘
I found this video absolutely fascinating! There is clearly genius behind every aspect of Stranger Things
Lets admit it. You're here because you've finished season 4 and are waiting for volume 2 to release 🤣 Great video btw!
Have to agree that he really is the perfect Eddie
The fact that they made the same pattern amazes me. Accurate in the little details, this series is beyond success
You all did an amazing job! I really felt like I was back in the 80’s.
This is so fascinating. I adored Eddie's looks this season especially. So cool to see the process!
The depth of detail & thought process going into every cast members wardrobe is insane🔥🔥🔥👍
This lady and her team are brilliant! All those incredible details! Bravo!
