Every pilot's schedule in unique, and in this video I'll explain why!
I dive a little deeper and explain some variables that come into play when creating an airline pilot's schedule. From FAA regulations, seniority, aircraft type, domicile, reserves and line holders, there are a lot of different factors that come together in the end to give us our schedule for the month.

@@SaramaikatHello dear Im 14 year old that wants to become a pilot 👩🏻✈️ that i really searched in the RUclips that i found youa and I’m watching all of ur vlog so happy to have you here❤😊
this was super informative. thanks, sara. i’m about 2 months into flight school. about to do my first solo long distance flight
You got this!!
How did it go
Absolutely love this Sara! The vlogs are great but this kind of insight is amazing for people who are avgeeks but don't know the ins and outs.
This video is extraordinary. So much information and beautifully presented. I was always curious about how much pilots work. Thanks so much!
You are very welcome! 😊
@@Saramaikat - I think probably one of the toughest jobs in the airline industry has got to be "crew scheduling!" Between aircraft types, route requirements, flight deck crew requirements, cabin crew requirements, layover accommodations and so forth, they're constantly juggling. Quite possibly only ATC controllers at busy airports (LAX, SFO, DFW, ATL, JFK, etc.) might have it tougher? Anyway, mad props to those who do work in crew scheduling, right? Cheers from GEG!
Thanks for the video, schedules is probably by far the thing I’m most worried about as I want to be a pilot, super useful. Amazing vid as usual!
I’m glad you enjoyed it! (:
I appreciate the amount of work you put into making this video.
I love your videos sara they just help me alot as I want to see myself as a pilot when I grow up.. Thanks again for your beautifully represented schedule of a pilot
I love your videos. They really motivate me to not get distracted from my goals.
Also you read my mind the moment I was doing research more in-depth about schedules of an airplane pilot I opened youtube and your video was there lol, love your videos and I honestly hope you continue your content because personally it helps me a lot even though I have no idea if i even can get into flight school because of the payments

Thank you so much! Flight programs such as Delta propel or united aviate might be worth looking into- I know they offer scholarships as well!
Wow that's great.Thanks alot!
Im 24 getting ready to attend flight school in florida. Schedules are definitely something that scares me in the airline industry. But a video about how your boyfriend feels about dating a pilot would be cool! Great video thanks for providing such great information as i motivate myself to achieve this. 🙏
It was very interesting! To me it was clearly understandable. 👏
Yay! I’m glad!
Thanks for the video 😊😊 !!
Yep great explanation! All the best in your career!
Its very helpfull and informative video, thanks!
I'm sri lankn 🇱🇰 l watch your all videos . Thanks giving video ❤
Great video! For future videos I love the vlog videos where you are flying and staying at hotels. Then you go out and see the city or town you're staying in. ;))
I love making those, too! Will try to do more (:
Very informative and interesting
Thanks again! This might be really specific for a video topic but I’m always curious how flight crew manages food while they’re working, particularly when they’re maintaining good nutrition. Would love to hear your thoughts.
I’d love to make a video on it and will keep your idea in mind! Thanks!
I am currently in ground school, getting ready to take my written exam. I’m so pumped for flight school and beyond. I hope I get my choice on regional airline.
Awesome info!👍🏽..Aloha 🤙🏽
Great video
Editions is getting better , I’ve seen this trend with pilots that are going to United 😅, they have a flexible video policy so I’m guessing you are going to United. Great content
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for all the info! Could you do a video about taking vacations? Do you get vacation days or how does that work?
Yes, we get vacation time as well! (:
Loved the deeper insight of the schedule of pilots! I had a question though about medical, is colour blindness a problem in becoming a commercial pilot?
Above all you are looking so beautiful and the way of your talking is awesome ❤❤❤
I love you so much from Egypt
Hey, I'm from 🇮🇳India, I want to be airline pilot in 🇺🇸usa,
You are too much inspiring to me, your videos do motivate me alot!
I do get positive vibes from u......
Love for aviation❤❤❤
I love your videos
Wow. Beautiful young woman making that cash with out following todays money making trends. Admirable I love it. Currently a trucker kinda want to try piloting. Wasn’t expecting someone like this doing it.
I love your videos! I’m 17 and currently in the process of getting my ppl! You are a huge inspiration for me🤍
Thank you so much! 🥹🥹 good luck getting your private! ❤️
I'm 18 and just started flight training. Its quite the grind, but I think it'll be worth it.
Hi Sara, I really enjoy your videos which are so informative about the work of a Pilot. I just have a question about the cost of a Pilot's layover: do you pay for the cost of accommodation and transportation to and from the hotels?
Your airline should be paying you to produce these videos as a recruitment tool. Great content.
I haven’t been able to find a video on sick days ! 😣.. calling out, how many vacation /pto days? How does a short notice emergency call out work … etc ..
You’re number 4 in your base after only 2 years!!??? What the… that’s amazing.
Ikr! My thoughts too!
Wow! That’s nuts. I remember hearing about guys getting stuck at a regional for 10 years with no upward mobility.
Hey Sara! Love you videos, watch them all, just thought I'd let ya know your links at the top of your bio are not working! Thanks for another good video!
Thank you so much for lmk! (:
And now i know why you looked so Familiar on Monday night, Welcome to the family 😅 you're going to LUV it here.
Southwest?
Hi Sara! I have a question. When you say flight time, does it mean you only log the time you took off and land? or does the flight time also include ground movement (pushback, taxi etc..) ?
Helpful
I want to become a captain and you are my role model😘
Hi Sara! Any advice for someone starting at a Part 141 Flight School? What preparation should I do before starting? Thank you!
Awesome video Sara! What if you are religious and need a Friday and Saturday off ? How does this work ? Once again thanks for this informative video ❤
I'd like to see you at KORD ✈✈✈
@saramaikat what about if a pilot falls ill before they are scheduled to leave out the next day. Where do they report an absence? Also, what if a pilot is late to work and do pilots clock in/out?
Do you try to get the same route every time or do you like to try routes that you never flew before?
Idk if you’re allowed to say but are you headed to a mainline in a few months? Or a different regional?
My wife is a senior flight attendant at a major airline. She usually purposely bids reserve because most of the time she doesn’t get called. At her airline they call by seniority. The Junior people get used first. She barely works. Some months she gets lucky and doesn’t work at all.
That’s awesome!
Do you find yourself constantly at your computer waiting to bid on flights for the following month then?
I’m assuming it’s first come first serve, after seniority is accounted for? Is it tricky to get ahead of the others when picking the flights you want?
Hi Sara. I spent 1968 to 1970 at Kaneohe Bay Air Station. I was woorking on F-4 Phantoms.I
loved the people, beaches.water falls and pineapples. You are very lucky to call that home. Oh Cooly How was great too. Stay safe and enjoy your trips.
Yes, I am so lucky to call Hawaii home! You ought to make a trip out there again!
@Saramaikat Hi Sara. I would love fly back to your home land, but I can't fly, i have had two blood clots in my right leg in 03 and 16. I work on anything pilot safety and comfort in the Marines for nine and a half years. I could go by boat I guess. No pressure changes to move v a clot. I had a back seat license for the F-4 Phantom,ànd made a few flights around the island chain. I did a 360° below the lip of a big volcano in a Marine Corp F-4. Don't tell anyone and have fun Sara. Your the Best!
Sara, really enjoyed the video. I didn’t know that pay or credits are connected to the trip. As a pilot is there a guaranteed minimum monthly pay?
When on reserve, yes! It is usually between 70-75 hours guaranteed monthly pay depending on your airline
I have some questions if you don't mind. When you were hired did you get to pick where you were based or did the airline assign you a base? And was it the same for the aircraft you fly? Did you get to pick or did they pick for you?
Have you had to commute at all or have you always lived in base?
Make the next video on how much does it cost to become a commercial pilot in USA and also tell us about the scholarship I shall be very thankful to you
I am a 14 year old girl, my dream is to become a pilot ur videos really inspire me and i love to watch your videos 💗💗
Thanks for the video, I’m also wondering how the aircraft is bidding. I thought large body aircraft usually have more seniority but it might not work like what I have thought.
It’s always changing since there is so much movement in the industry right now 😬 I would say for the most part, wide body usually requires more seniority however there are new hires getting them right out of training as well! It changes monthly!
@@Saramaikat Thank you so much for the comment!!!!!!!!!
If you want a really high percent change of going to Hawaii every flight for junior, is to fly for Hawaiian right? 😅 But for me is I’m planning to fly for Hawaiian and fly inter island for the B717s so no problem there
Hi lm 15 and l wanna be a pilot ur videos are very inspiring thank you
How do you know which trips the seniors will likely bid for so u don’t end up bidding for them. Also, how do u know which bases are more senior and which bases are more junior?
Great content! I was wondering can you work for and American airline and be based out of a different country as a U.S. pilot? Example I would like to be living/based in Brazil to make trips back to Miami, Dallas, Atlanta etc. I speak both languages
You can live wherever you want, just gotta get to work on time. There are no airlines in the US with foreign bases
Great video, except where you had 777 with a 787 graphic...the nerd in me can't let that slide lol
Then being on reserve is good if ur gonna get a Guranteed 75 hours is that correct ?
Can u do monthly Rosta reveals of where your flying please
Hi! Do you get to pick your airport base? Or can they essentially make you work anywhere when you first become a pilot? Love your vids btw!
That’s also based on seniority. If the airline has, say, a Miami base, that base is going to be super senior because who wouldn’t want to live in warm, vacation destination Florida? So if you’re a junior pilot you probably aren’t senior enough to be based there. Whereas a base like NYC is likely to be super junior because of the high cost of living there.
@@Southwest737 Thank you! After doing more research, I found this out and you have to commute to your base where you have to pay for your own flight to get there (I think). Do they pay for your hotel for the night? I was confused on other videos I watched from other RUclipsrs!
@@user-zz4iv1bs8f You don’t have to pay for a flight. You use your nonrev and jumpseat benefits to catch a free ride on a flight (if there are empty seats available). You do however have to pay for your hotel or crashpad as mentioned in the video.
Just a question how do you get your schedule
would you suggest some of the best flight schools across the world
So when one starts off in aviation u start off on reserve? Generally how long is one on reserve before being a line holder- guess that can depend on a lot of factors
Also, Everyone talks about hours worked, days off ect- no one seems to talk about the shifts- are you on days for 2 weeks, then nights, ect or is one always on a set shift ?
Thanks
How long did you stay (hours) or time at regional?
Do u ever flight to Sarawak Borneo...
what do you do if you want a whole month of?
Hello how many flight hours did you get while in university
Really random but did you fly to Norfolk this month lol
Question! I’m currently a flight attendant at AA mainline and I’m considering starting flight school. Flight attendants at my company gave a system where line holders can drop or trade trips with others. Do pilots have something similar? Or once you get your line it’s locked in and you have to fly the line you’re given?
You are able to trade, post, and drop trips as well! 💖
14 yo here,i would love to be a pilot and these videos are preventing me from exploding of anticipation
How many hrs do you work per work day typically
Will you ever move from the reigonals to the majors, if so how would you go about doing that?
Actually, she has already moved to a major airline.
I know this is a third comment and I'm sorry it's the last I swear i hope you read this and i have a question
I have a heart disease called Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) which basically prevents nothing for me to happen all I do is have a checkup every 2 years to see how it is and it's never off the regular but can I still pass the class 1 medical thing with that disease because I couldn't find any information about my "disease" in specific
You can understand what a pilot does for example: JFK-LHR
LHR-DWF
DWF-LHR
LHR-JFK
or is the return trip on the same route broken, so only JFK-LHR?
When do pilots begin payable hours. Is it only flight hours?
in your 16 days off how many of those days are you actually home?
is this system the same in the UK?
When on a flight captain and first Officer should eat different meals safety procedure.
Hello sara....im 14 yrs old....and i am wanting to become a pilot since i was 10...but my family is not so well to do to afford the fees...so
could you tell how much it costed for u to become a pilot....btw my name is dhiya it'll be an inspiration for me if you'll say hi
My daughter wants to be a pilot. Could you share what school you went to? She has been accepted to a few next year and we are trying to figure out the best way for her to get her commercial license. Thank you.
She told that she was in Bakersfield, California. It was obviously the California Aeronautical University (CAU) in Bakersfield.
