It can be challenging moving and adjusting to life overseas so the little things can make that difference. As much as we enjoy seeing different apartments in Porto to get a feel, I understand it can get stressful for you guys. Heating/AC, washer/dryer, natural light coming in and location are important factors for me. The apartment in generally looks good. Cia's bedroom and the kitchen are of a good size. I love the pop art in the living room. Totally understand why that apartment is not your ideal choice especially when the first apartment had a lot of natural light coming in. Thanks for sharing guys! 👍🏻
NEW apartment!? Wow the place looks awesome, guys! Congrats! But based on Valencia's size, I'm assuming this is an apt you are no longer in? Lol. The terrace is definitely a nice little area to enjoy some coffee in the morning. As always, thank you for the tour! 🙌
Very nice love the outdoor terrace and the paintings on the wall. Only in Europe would you find the fridge inside a door/closet, harder for me to sneak late night snacks. Lol
Grateful! 🙏 That's a really kind comment. We weren't in love with the images we captured on the walkthrough but it's hard in the place with the natural lighting changing so much from room to room. Thanks for kindness. - Josh & Kalie
I’m exactly on the opposite end of your expat journey. :) I’m portuguese and I live in the Bay Area, close to San Francisco. I’ve been enjoying your videos and in a recent one, around how you spend your budget , I was recognizing the coffee shops and the churrascaria (I’m from Originally from Porto and have an apt close to yours ). I now formally feel like a stalker after completely recognizing the place location 😂 Keep up the great work and thanks for your vids
Wow! How long have you been in the Bay Area? As you've seen in this video, we've recently moved to this neighborhood. We had that churrascaria again this week. 😁 Thanks for the encouragement and we'll certainly keep working hard and trying to improve the quality of our videos. 🙏 - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere close to 14 years as an expat. 7 in Dublin (Ireland), 1 in Madrid and getting to 6 in the bay! I do go back to Pt a 2 or 3 times a year. Mostly to Porto but also to the Algarve (I spend a cple weeks there in the summer every year). And my kids (who never lived in Portugal) LOVE the frango no churrasco and white rice on that churrascaria... we ALWAYS pick up food from there a few times when we’re around :)
@@mailpedromorais wow, fantastic. We’ve got a little crossover with Madrid and being expats for over 10 years. Next time your back in Porto, let us know. Maybe we can meet up and swap stories. - Josh & Kalie
I've read many times that housing in Portugal tends to be poorly insulated. So cold in the winter. Hot in the summer. I'm surprised you guys moved again. That last place seemed great. But maybe the end of the video will reveal why you've moved again. Good tip about which radiator heaters are better.
Thanks. Yes, it's a commonly commented thing in forums and such. New houses have been built to a better code. Regarding the moving around, it isn't by choice or design. Apt 2 was a gap fill to place 3 where we can finish out our housing contract. - Josh & Kalie

@@ExpatsEverywhere enjoying binge watching your Portugal videos..I’m leaning towards Lisbon or Algarve (maybe Lagos?) for an extended stay and planning to cover the southern half of the country on my first visit. So excited!
Regarding heating/cooling, depending on solar exposure ( the front facing south, like you already realized), some places almost don’t need AC or Heating, remember we don’t have long winters (nor negative temperatures) and temperature above 30C in the summer - so cooling the house is not really an issue in this city of Porto. About the electrical heaters, they basically “suck” the same amount of energy: what goes IN -> goes OUT, the energetic efficiency between doesn’t differ, only the way the heat is sent outside.
How well do the windows act as sound insulation? I saw that the street is pretty close to your bedroom windows; so do you hear the traffic/pedestrians through them?
This winter was unusually cold for Portugal, although I still do not own a coat. What I think helps if you aren't living near the Southern areas is lighting a few candles during the evening, a few rugs and I also purchased a twin-size heating pad from Wortens, which helps take the chill out of the bed. We currently rent an apartment with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, full kitchen w/washer, Living room with fireplace, foyer area, 2 terraces, 2 Juliet terraces, fiber optic wifi, tennis court, pool, underground parking garage, playground area for children, grassy area, room for walking, skateboarding, gated complex for 750 euros a month. Our utilities (water, gas, electric) are under 150 euros a month. We are 1000 feet from the Atlantic, 10 minutes from the train station, bus station, shops, cafes, clinics, vet, post office, farmers market, there are too many shops to list! I think the further you get from the large cities the more affordable things are. We really didn't want a three-bedroom but we were counting on family and friends coming for a visit then this thing called Covid 19 happened. Great informative video! I love tours!
Gaybrielle, thank you so much for the rich detail in your post. €750 per month for all of that sounds like a bargain! Great stuff! We do love Porto and will most likely be where we spend the bulk of our time, but we will want to see these other interesting parts of the country to see what life is like there because, you never know, we might be taken away. Thanks again for the support. We look forward to showing more home tours. We have a fun one this weekend for the dreamer in us all. - Josh & Kalie
Thanks for showing us the new place. So happy you have laundry now. 😀 Love the tips for renting an apartment. Very important things to consider for sure. Are the "quirks" of the apartments (like the fridge behind a door and elevator starting from the 3rd floor) mostly in older buildings? Can't wait to see videos of the neighborhood when Covid restrictions lift. And OMG... your baby is adorable!
Thanks so much! 😊 We're looking forward to getting into the neighborhoods more too. We appreciate the love and we also think she's pretty cute. 🥰 - Josh & Kalie
So much good advice--and practical-- that we can follow when we begin considering apartments. We are very good with living in small spaces, so that will not be an adjustment for us; in fact, we prefer smaller space. We know that unlike in the USA, many people do live in more compact housing. Thanks for the tips. And loving the new verbal Cia!
Thanks for sharing, Caleb. It sounds like you're #teamjosh on this one. 😁 We're trying to get her to say "pastel de nata" but no luck yet. - Josh & Kalie
Beautiful apartment, I like how modern and quiet it is but seems choppy likely because they want to create zones for heating and cooling. Muito Obrigado!
Thank you. Definitely chopped up for sure. The one heater can keep the living room warm and Cia's room while she's sleeping stays warm. Thanks for the comment. - Josh & Kalie
How much are you paying for the new appartment and how long is the lease? I prefer the look of the temporary second appartment, but understand why you don't because of a baby! i have never lived in an appartment so this is going to be interesting when we move to Lisbon...Soon! I love your view about living with what you use and I look forward to dehoarding!!! Great informative video!
We're in a weird situation because we've actually finished out paying our 6 month contract and then got moved because of the mold and leak issue. We asked living and they said the advertised rate for this place is €900/month so we put that in the description section. We'll be in the place until the end of our lease in 1 month's time. We do have an option to extend until mid-June and then someone else is moving in. We're not sure what we're going to do. We need to see what happens with covid restrictions. Thank for the comment and compliment! 😁 - Josh & Kalie
11:20 You guys aren't selling me on the "Portugal weather is mild" thing. I want to move to a place where it is NEVER cold. The older I get, the more times 60 degrees Fahrenheit seems like an artic blast, and 98 degrees is like "that's what I'm talking about"
Every home is going to have it’s quirks...but one thing that I have noticed here is that fridges do not seem to be designed into kitchen spaces...which I find a little odd...especially in contemporary homes. The common use of balcony/logia spaces for laundry in apartments is really nice, I especially like these spaces off the kitchen. All of the spaces that you have been in are nice and contemporary, so it is nice that they are pretty.
I watch too many of your videos because I just saw this apartment re-listed again on Idealista and immediately thought - I recognize that terrace and artwork, that's Josh and Kalie's former apartment! Looks like the price has gone up quite a bit (unless they have a ton of wiggle room built in) as they're now asking €1600!
Hi Karen, that sounds about right! Our first apartment has gone from €900 then went to €1080 and now it's €1,400 I think. €1,600 for that apartment is super, super steep but there's a reason for it too. - Josh & Kalie
Boa Noite, from Maryland. Love the video. Very informative. I’m so glad you got that washer dryer. During your time there, have you all decided that Porto is your final destination? If so, is the City where you want to lay your head?
Maryland?! We're state neighbors, Sharon! Good to know that about you. Thanks for the love. That's a great question. We haven't discussed leaving Porto and living anywhere else. We do want to see more of Portugal and you never know that happens when you do that, but from what we've seen, we're Porto people. After experiencing a few different parts of Porto now, we know that the real downtown probably isn't right for us although it's perfect right now because there's less tourism and partying and such. This current neighborhood (Combatentes) and our favorite neighborhood here (Bonfim) are two good options for a more long term place to lay our heads. - Josh & Kalie
Hi guys, thank you for the apartment tour. But, I am wondering why you chose this particular place? 🤷♀️ 💭 It is clearly much colder and so many things you pointed out that are not ideal and most of all the bad heating situation...mmmh... May I ask please. How much you pay on rent for this apartment? Something I would have mentioned in the video as it is such an important part. How much rent in advance did you have to pay and did you find it through an online platform (idealista etc.) or via an agency? I’d be grateful if you’d send me an answer, obrigada 🙏 Thank you very much in advance 👋 p.s. sooo cuuute observing Pincho hopping over from one green rug to the next 😂 🥰
In short, we're in this situation due to a leak roof and mold that occurred just a few weeks ago. Liiiving (property management company) has been very professional and accommodating. We're at the end of our contract and thus already paid up. We started with deposit plus first and last month's rent so essential 3 months before you move in. So it's not by choice that we're moving around a lot. When life gives you lemons, make RUclips videos or however the saying goes. If you do use Liiiving, tell them that we sent you. 😊 You might get a little extra attention. We're lucky we caught Pincho doing something so cute. He acts like the floor is lava. - Josh & Kalie
T2.. what does that mean? well T stands for Typology and the number for the number of rooms, if it´s a villa or house then it´s a V2, V3, V4 .. and so on. T2+1 means that there's is an extra room or office upstairs Duplex means two store flat (usually with at least 3 or 4 rooms) and very big areas with terraces or verandas. Permutas (swap or exchange) can be done if both parties agree to swap houses and end up usually with one paying the other the difference in value. Might be forgetting something.. if I do please comment. EDIT: LOL no way, they installed the fridge on the food on the kitchen pantry? omg ;DDDDD (if you or anyone denounce them to the authorities would be a headache as it might be a hazard) is that an old building that suffered a vast rehabilitation? Cause that would explain to some extent. Btw I´m renting my flat which makes two of these for 900€ pm and is more modern and more brilliant constructed.. but it´s in the suburbs of the capital with a short walk of all services you might need with a children's park nearby.. maybe I should raise the rent ;D
Yes, there are several. The main thing is to stay centrally although, we'll admit that Porto is extremely walkable. Are you looking at staying in a hotel or short term rental? We can probably give you a better indication knowing that. - Josh & Kalie
Look at the bright side. You are a minute away from a freshly baked Pastel de Nata and other stuff, two minutes from the Metro, two minutes away from a grilled chiken.😂😂 And yes, there is a problem with insulation on older apartments. Cia is so cute.😂
That's exactly right. And those two minutes to the metro are basically stairs down from our apt and down into the metro 😁 Thanks for the compliment about Cia. 🙏🥰 - Josh & Kalie
How long did it take to figure it out? Hopefully not too long because right now in the winter it takes so long for clothes to air dry. Yup, washing machine/dryer + dishwasher = power out for us too. 😂- Josh & Kalie
It looks comfortable. Love the couch! Question: Did you have much trouble looking for a rental, with a dog? I’ll be looking for an apartment for me and my cat. Josh I really hope you learn to get used to it! How long will you be there?
It’s not easy per se. There are owners that rejected us because they didn’t want pets but there is enough inventory for us to find something that works. You know? Pincho doesn’t shed (Kalie and I do) and he doesn’t do any damage to floors or furniture. He’s too small. 😂 Well be here until the end of our contract and are considering extending. We would be able to extend to June 15 but we’re undecided. Hope that helps. Keep writing your questions. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere Ha, I know what you mean about the shedding. (I had a non-shedding small dog too). Pincho is soooo tiny, it's funny to see how big Cia is next to him now. It's great to know you have found enough inventory. Take care!!
@@JenShea So true. He doesn’t like that she just keeps getting bigger and moving more. As far as the inventory goes, we know that it won’t stay this good. The question is when will tourism really return. Have a good week as well. See you in the next one we hope. - Josh & Kalie
So this might be a boring suggestion, but have you ever considered making a segment on the actual moving process? In other words, where do you get boxes and where do you get rid of or return them? Do you hire a moving team or simply hire a truck to do it yourself? It's a little more of a practical video, but you just show yourselves magically in the new place without really talking about how you got there.
That's a really fair point, John. But to be honest, we do just magically appear in these places. 😂Seriously though, we don't have much stuff but clothes. We don't box stuff up. We only have 2 pieces of "furniture" that need to be moved. We have a crib and high chair. The rest of our stuff goes right back in our luggage. The apartments we've been in have been fully furnished and are stocked with linens and all. Moving into this place, we did 2 round trips in an Uber. We probably could have shot that stuff, but it was a little stressful trying to pack quickly while the Uber was waiting. 😅 - Josh & Kalie
Our permanent address here is still the first place because of the situation we're in. We're locked out of the the portal for some reason but we're going to get that dealt with this week. We do get stuff mailed to Liiiving's address and then they'll coordinate getting it to us. We hardly have any mail. It's not ideal but when you're in our situation, we're just rolling with the punches. - Josh & Kalie
Yes, we're basically finished with our rental contract, we had already paid so we actually had to ask them what the advertised price is. It's €900 per month. - Josh & Kalie
Just apartment (+Internet and TV). Utilities are billed separately. Saying that, Liiiving does have a variety of packages people can get that include bills and a cleaning service. - Josh & Kalie

I now formally feel like a stalker after completely recognizing the place location 😂
Keep up the great work and thanks for your vids

And my kids (who never lived in Portugal) LOVE the frango no churrasco and white rice on that churrascaria... we ALWAYS pick up food from there a few times when we’re around :)

@@sissysweetp3764 brilliant. Love a good binge session. 😃 Keep us updated on your progress.
Thanks for the info. - Josh & Kalie
How well do the windows act as sound insulation? I saw that the street is pretty close to your bedroom windows; so do you hear the traffic/pedestrians through them?
Surprisingly, it's not a problem at all. The neighborhood itself is quiet. The cars don't speed down the street either. - Josh & Kalie

The older I get, the more times 60 degrees Fahrenheit seems like an artic blast, and 98 degrees is like "that's what I'm talking about"
Head to the Algarve or Madeira or Azores and you'll be just fine. - Josh & Kalie
Good point! Thanks for this detailed comment and adding good value to the comment section. Where are you located again? - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere we are just outside Coimbra. Looking to settle nearer to Figueira.
@@suzh5789 Thanks for letting us know. We’re hoping to visit that area in the coming months.
The dog playing floor is lava 😹😹
T2.. what does that mean? well T stands for Typology and the number for the number of rooms, if it´s a villa or house then it´s a V2, V3, V4 .. and so on.
T2+1 means that there's is an extra room or office upstairs
Duplex means two store flat (usually with at least 3 or 4 rooms) and very big areas with terraces or verandas.
Thanks for the details. Feel free to post of a link of your place. - Josh & Kalie

I didn't know the washer in our Lisbon apartment was a washer AND a dryer - we can't run it at the same time as the dishwasher 😆
Since you've moved a couple times, what do you use as a "permanent address" for the bank and stuff -- and do you use a mail service for your mail..?
Our permanent address here is still the first place because of the situation we're in. We're locked out of the the portal for some reason but we're going to get that dealt with this week. We do get stuff mailed to Liiiving's address and then they'll coordinate getting it to us. We hardly have any mail. It's not ideal but when you're in our situation, we're just rolling with the punches. - Josh & Kalie
Cia at the end! 😍😍
🥰 It's legit now her first word. She will say Hi and Bye consistently now. - Josh & Kalie
Great tips for finding the right rental and having laundry facilities are key! Are you paying the same rent as your first apartment?
