Great video. I made two major decisions since Tuesday’s election results. I applied for Social Security earlier than expected and I am placing my condo on the market. The sooner the better I plan to be in a foreign country thank you for your great videos.
I'm not surprised you 're considering moving from Dubai ... I lived there in Dubai for 3 years and it's like night and day !Portugal has my vote hands down plus more countries in Europe to visit 🎉
We're not interested in Dubai at all actually. We had jobs there at one point and we considered moving there sight unseen but we ended up in Saudi. After traveling to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we preferred Abu Dhabi! :-) - Josh & Kalie
What about the Expat taxes in Portugal? They were 10%, locked in for ten years. That died at the end of last year. Those who already had visas were grandfathered in, but new residents are not. Now, income is tax escalates pretty quickly to 47%, right? Also, most everyone wants to live along the coast, and those housing costs have escalated quite a lot, too. And the traffic in places like the east-west toll highway down south through the Algarve is really crowded in the tourist season. We were looking at the little town in the SE near the border, but then the tax change came up and we backed off. Can you tell me if I'm wrong? We are currently looking at Spain, instead.
The quarter flash song suits today perfect. "never in wildest dreams did I ever think I would leave but I am going to harden my heart swallow my tears and turn and leave you" I am Spain for years now and never go back.
If we just walk away, they’ll gladly take what we leave behind-our America isn’t something to be handed over. ATTN: America is at a crossroads. We must stand together and defend our values, our democracy, and our communities. This is not the time to step back or look away-our nation needs us here, standing up and speaking out. The future is ours to protect, and the time is now. Our vacations and celebrations can wait; right now, let’s focus on ensuring a just and strong America.
Agree. I also feel like you can run but you can't hide. The effects of this election will be felt around the globe as the US becomes more isolationist. Do you want to be an American in Europe if the US withdraws from NATO? Do you want to move to Mexico if there will be mass deportations of workers back to Mexico?
I love your audience! We just did a video about where to move if Trump wins and the comments were not so positive. We probably should have used your approach and did one video about where to move if your favorite candidate doesn´t win. Instead we were going to publish two separate videos, the next being, "where to move if Harris wins", but I am just exhausted.
Thank you. We're really not a political channel at all so we wanted to take this approach not to alienate anyone. We spoke with our friend Kristin from Traveling with Kristin and last week she put out both of her videos like what you wanted to do the the comments weren't positive either. Our goal is just to talk about places to move to and not choose sides. We like keeping with our regular upload schedule (except at around Christmas and NY when our impression rate is historically low). So this year we decided to do an election video since the Election is taking up a lot of impressions on YT right now. - Josh
Nice you didn't spoil the surprise by telling us who won after you travelled back in time to publish this video before election day. Happy Halloween Weekend! 🎃
Great video, as always, Josh. We watched your videos as we prepared to move to Portugal, 3 years ago, and we have continued to follow your story. We moved from the US as “seniors,” for the adventure and opportunity of living in Europe. We were not in any position to retire in the US, and in Portugal, we could. It has been a good move, and we definitely enjoy the history and culture of this place. We would caution those who move mainly for political reasons of any sort. If you are unable to just be; unable to live and love and learn and support others who speak your language on this international journey, you can blow apart great relationships and community like many have never experienced, with not allowing civil discourse or differing opinions. Very unfortunately, we are seeing it happen. Move wherever because you want to be there. Immigration is not an easy, or necessarily simple, experience. Leave anger, judgement and hatred behind. It’s never beneficial, and particularly not in close communities that depend upon each other for knowing how to work through the immigration process. Or find a mechanic. Or find a doctor or dentist or reliable contractor or buy a car or….. …or just be a friend.
Hi Bob and Viv! Thanks for continuing to follow our journey and content. You've added a lot of very wise words. Thanks for your contribution. - Josh & Kalie
People aren’t leaving because of who’s elected, what are they gonna do come back after they’re replaced in 4-8 years? That tells me it really is not about who is president. It’s about the country itself, or they use that as an excuse, even though they were planning on leaving anyway, for other reason.
I have always wondered this. I think for some people, it´s a mix of variables. perhaps they always wanted to move to a certain country because they loved it so much and U.S. politics is what pushes them over the edge to make the move as soon as they get the chance. It´s always better to run towards something rather than away from something. For me, it was a little bit of both. And the opportunity presented itself.
I think this administration is going work very hard to ensure Republicans only expand their hegemony. This is why everyone from Obama down said this election is literally about the future of democracy, whether or not your vote will count again. Trump and MAGA have no further interest in democracy, and they have bullied the moderates into a corner with death/retribution threats.
We have considered Irealnd (among many other countries), in large part because of the language. Would really be nice to go to an English speaking country, but there are so few and so many things to consider. There seems to be a housing crisis in Ireland, no? And a related anti-immigrant crisis, no? We looked into Dublin but it seems a bit dicey finding a safe, affordability neighbordhood. We're kind of focused on cities because we really want walkability but no car. That is not the most important criteria, though. There is a lot of charm to Ireland, but we would have to overlook the dreariness of the climate much of the year. Probably winter in Malta, or something.
This isn't a comment on this video, which was interesting, but rather a question about moving with a little one. How did you find others with similarly-aged children so your child makes new friends quickly.
Kalie got involved in a FB group for mom's in Porto. The very first expat friend we made was a British American lady with a kid that was about 6 months older than our daughter. She's been a dear friend ever since. We visit her often now as she's moved back to London for a bit. The kids love seeing each other and occasionally talking on FaceTime. Once Cia started school at 2 years old, friends and meeting new families took care of itself. Does that help answer it? - Josh

People are tired of the present liberal government because they have been in power for 10 years. Same thing happened with the Conservative Harper government after 10 years. These 10 year cycles are not out of the ordinary. I visit my brother and sister in law who live in the States often and despite Canada’s problems it is nothing close to the anger and tension I feel when I’m in America (and universal health care and gun control are a nice bonus but cost of living in Canada is high).
I’m not leaving bc of who is President, though that may be the nail in the coffin. We’re leaving bc we’re concerned our children will be a target. We feel our col means giving up or missing their childhood by working to barely make ends meet. We can’t afford necessities and our children won’t have the opportunities I had access to as a youth. I am also highly concerned about an international war & the economic situation of the US, which is a long term fix. Where we live crime and homelessness as a direct result of jail populations released during Covid and mental health/drug related homelessness is off the charts. Even if we switch states we’re stuck not being able to afford a COL. I can’t wait to “retire” (is that even possible anymore) to “live” bc I doubt I’ll ever be able to.
@@karlyw.b.4125 you are so correct. I was lucky and made it out of here. I don’t have any kids, but I still have my personal hopes and dreams also. Move into Colombia, which is not for everybody I was able to save over $2000 moving here. And I’m not living cheaply either. My rent went all expenses is $2000. That include groceries and going out to eat which is around $700 total split in half. But the groceries is for three people. I figure that $2000 every month in savings can create a European trip every two months, every three months or whatever. I totally understand. You still have to be retired or have some kind of remote work to be able to live abroad. Just keep pushing and maybe you’ll find a way to get there. Maybe you’ll realize you won’t need to work 10 more years, to be able to afford to live in the states. And maybe save those years by living abroad where you can afford a lifestyle.
No and to be honest, I'd literally have to stop and think about who was in office in 2009 when we moved. We moved for the adventure and desire to experience new cultures. We had a 5 year plan to live in 3 different countries. Year 5, we were going to move to Brazil and live there before the World Cup 2014. Watch the World Cup and then move back to the US. After Spain and South Korea year 1, we scrapped the 5 year plan and wanted to live abroad indefinitely. - Josh & Kalie
