My List for Historical K-Drama 1. My Country : The New Age 2. Rebel : Thief who stole The People 3. Six Flying Dragon 4. Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo
That's pretty new released, but Jewel in the palace, Jumong and Empress K are one of the top historical drama I say. Scarlet heart and Kingdom are pretty good too.
10. Fengshui 9. The Fortress 8. KUNDO-Age of Rampant 7. The Great Battle 6. The Throne 5. War of the Arrow 4. The Face Reader 3. The King n the Clown 2. Masquerade 1. Roaring Current
Great selection of Korea's finest cinema. I truly love "The Admiral: Roaring Currents," and "The Great Battle." Both films depicted epic struggles between tiny elements of Korea's military (13 ships under Admiral Yi Sun Shin in the former and 5,000 men commanded by Yang Manchun in the latter) against not only juggernaut size forces (the 0ver 300 strong Japanese fleet and the 200,000 Tang Dynasty soldiers for each movie), but also facing obstacles from within their own country. And, the grand scale of both films, combined with the brilliant display of military/political strategy and tactics, really was a feast for the eyes. I also find that Korea's great masterpiece "Tae Guk Gi (Brotherhood of War)" (2001), is one of the greatest historical movies of all time, with its profound plot of two brothers thrust into the horrors of war who are equally shaped by it, being witnesses to some of the most important events of the Korean War.
In UK, these types of films are known as costume drama or period drama - interesting. I first fell in love with Korean period drama with the weekly instalments of 'The Jewel in the Palace' late on Sunday evenings on New Zealand television, broadcast on a private tv channel. Then I came across 'Masquerade', which I really enjoyed - great story and acting by lead character - thankfully, with English subtitles. I've subscribed.
Personnally I enjoyed Memories of the sword and Assassination the most. I have also a soft spot for Monstrum but it's a mix between historical and fantasy, but it was really entertaining and with a good cast.
Yi Sun-Sin is the Nimitz or Nelson of his time! My number one of this list is "War of the Arrows". I think Korea makes better movies than any other country at this time because of the real sincerity. When their heart breaks, your heart breaks.

The best thing in The Great Battle is how the camera panned in to each character fighting like in video games, really enjoy it. Bonus point for making the night battle viewable.
