    Just to elaborate on the Chaplain aspect, with the Crozius Arcanum and Skull Helm
    The Blood Angels Wardens (their Chaplain substitute around the Red Thirst) did wear black armour and have a skull faced helm. Unsure why or if it was specifically mentioned as I've not read where I've had it referenced from.
    Their Crozius wasn't limited to a power maul however, and could be anything else.

    On Chaplains; I just recently read the short story “Lost Sons,” which focuses on 20 Blood Angels left behind on Baal during the Heresy. Their resident chaplain sports full black armor and a skulled helm. The same story also has a very campy moment where the marines mark their armor in Death Company colors, so I’m not entirely sure I am personally sold on the story’s accuracy…

      Fear to tread has raldoron paint a dead bangel's armor black. And malevolence has an entire company of soot covered angels(from surviving their ship crashing). Seems the black armor is a funeral custom from baal's moons.

    • @TheRainman614

      In Fear to Tread, there were marines that fell to the Red Thirst. At that point in time, they weren't seeing their Primarch's death, they were just seeing images of impending doom and the Heresy unfolding. When this happened, Sanguinas personally executed his men as they could not be brought out of this stupor. Horus found out about this flaw and Sanguinas kept it hush-hush because he was worried the Emperor would sanction his legion and have them destroyed for this flaw. The chaplains had skull helms for several reasons. In 40K it represents the Emperor. In 30K, it represented the word of the Emperor and to challenge that word meant death. Chaplains in 30K had 2 purposes - morale of the men and delivering edicts to new worlds. When they delivered these edicts, they would arrive and tell the world their choice was either to become a part of the Imperium or resist and be destroyed. Many of these chaplains were killed delivering these edicts. The Word Bearers exclusively relied upon the Chaplain to greet new worlds while the Sons of Horus, Dark Angels, and Alpha Legion would send a Captain or Praetor or someone important to discuss terms. The Expeditions that relied on more crusader type hosts, they would utilize the chaplains whereas the forces that dealt more on data, information, etc. would rely on a high ranking officer to parlay.

      A lot of the fiction exists to explain the changes between the late Crusade era and 40k, with most of those changes occurring during the Heresy itself. By the Siege of Terra, expect a lot of things to look like 40k.
      But yeah, this one's a little weird because we know the Death Company's origins are tied to later events. I guess they're telling us that the color scheme was already in use and it would get repurposed after Sanguinius's death.

I've found a lot to love in the general artistic style, lore and appearance of the game relative to 40k, and as 9e has become more balanced and HH2.0 is on the horizon, I'm starting to take the leap into it now. I'm really pleased that you're doing these videos, because it brings across your love of the hobby in a really infectious way, and it makes me quite excited to give it a go. I've been theorycrafting lists in Battlescribe for the last few weeks and it's been great fun learning about different Legions, but also about cool-looking factions like Solar Aux. As things currently stand, I'm excited to maybe look at Sons of Horus or World Eaters.

      My understanding is that mixing armor types like that is a very Heresy appropriate thing to do. The Mechanicum of pre-Heresy has all their production facilities wired up to a giant computing cloud. So, when for example Mk. VI "goes into full production", that means it could start being produced anywhere. So, all armor types up to VI are available. When the Heresy really kicks off, and the traitor legions begin the first hostile actions of the civil war, the Imperium's interconnectedness breaks down very quickly. Links in supply lines fracture, logistical issues abound, and the once smooth and fully interconnected Imperium, splinters into contested war zones and pieces. Legions start to have to do more for themselves to stay effective. Anyone and everyone unable to efficiently resupply, after actions, is going to battlefield scavenge and bring out older gear to stay as combat ready as they can. (Small example: I've got some legion specific Mk. III shoulders, with emblem, I plan to squash onto some of the new Mk. VI armor when I get my hands on the new box set. The plan is to make a support squad with them. Why do that? Because producing newer shoulders with the markings is more niche, not as easy, so they are just adding their older Mk III bit to their kit. Most importantly though, I'm doing that because I think it will look great, and help visually separate that unit.)

    • @tunguskalumberjack9987
      @tunguskalumberjack9987 2 года назад

      I don’t know if the community at large would be okay with it, but the people I’m familiar with would be 100% fine with it, so I imagine they’d be fine. All armours from MKII-MKVI use interchangeable parts- newer models were designed to be “backwards compatible”, allowing the Marine to affect battlefield repairs by replacing a damaged part with a part from a fallen ally or foe. So if someone in MKVI armour gets a very damaged pauldron, essentially they can pick one up off of an opponent’s body, even if it’s a MKIV armour suit, and affix it to their own. That’s what I always thought, anyway, so if I’m wrong, please- anyone who knows for sure- let me know. One thing I hate more than being wrong is being wrong and no one tells me. I hope that helps, and welcome to the best of the Warhammer backgrounds- enjoy 30K!

    • @BazookaJRambo
      @BazookaJRambo 2 года назад +3

      Absolutely. A mix of armour marks makes your models more interesting and adds some back story to them. If you look at Forgeworld's own artwork for the Heresy era marines, you'll see depictions of them with mixed armour (even moreso if you choose to make a Blackshields army. Blackshields are marines who for their own reasons have turned their backs on their former legion and obscured their colours and heraldry to form into renegade forces. Cut off from their legions' supplies, they have to mix and match armour from whatever they find or take from their foes. They also have stripped down or modified armour and weapons of a type referred to as "Pariah", where it affords them freer movement and in game gives them particular rules. They are also armed with a choice of strange and interesting weapons as well as regular wargear. Blackshields are one to choose where you'd like to have your own mysterious army, and invent your own story and colour scheme and badge).
      I wouldn't seek the approval of others though - you're paying for your models and it's you that's going to enjoy them; you're not doing it for someone else. That said, I'd stick within the style of the game's setting so that things make sense.

    • @CarlosSempereChen
      @CarlosSempereChen 2 года назад +2

      According to the Forge World books, combining parts from the older armor types (Mk II and III) with the newer ones (Mk IV and VI) is difficult and rare. There's a color plate in book 6 saying something along the lines of, "Only the Iron Hands could pull this off." But they're talking about torsos and arms and legs and packpacks. Helmets should be simpler, and we've been using FW's head upgrade kits (there's one per legion) on whatever armor we happened to be using. Also, how Mk V fits into this is unclear. Personally, I'd be fine mixing Mk V parts into any armor type.

    I get that people don’t know everything about Heresy, whether they’ve been into it for years or are brand new to it. But one thing I don’t get- specifically, a lot of 40K players asking if they can use Primaris in their 30K Legion. I understand that as a 40K player, it’s possible that you don’t know the 30K lore. But don’t you know your own 40K lore? You should already know that you can’t use them for 30K, as they didn’t appear until late in 40K- and it was probably the most major plot point about 40K for years and years. I don’t know- it seems to me that they really DO know that they can’t, but are looking for someone to tell them what they want to hear. What I love about the Heresy- it’s a lot of work, but it’s so enjoyable and rewarding to create something very detailed and very unique. Just porting over an already finished army and removing all of that creative process seems boring and lazy to me. Just my 3 cents.

    I feel like the nuance in the upgrades from mkii-iii-iv could’ve been touched on in a better way; the mkiv was a little faster than mkiii, not sure about ii as iii is heavier mkii and scars in mkii seem to do well, but it is definitely smoother and quieter. Protection wise I’ve never seen a difference arise in the books. So mkii is a bit outdated but its not a huge shot in the foot and is still a well used and respected mark of armour up to and after the siege

    Definitely considering picking this up again. I'm at uni in Nottingham now so no better place in the world to be for it. I'd love to see some rules variation for each power armour mark.
    Been out of 40k doing scale modelling for a few years so my modeling skills have really developed since last I built 30k/40k stuff so I'll start over entirely.
    Not sure which legion I'll go with, definitely traitorous though. Death to the false emperor! Not world eaters; I did those when calth came out and ended up with them being chaos space marines because no one around me played heresy. The melee focus just limits a thematic army too much and it seems melee oriented units very sidelined a bit sometimes. Thousand Sons look great, good lore, I have the kit to paint them properly in airbrushed metallic dark red, plus in 40k I've always been a Tzeentch fan. They're a strong contender. The other option I like would be the Word Bearers. Lots of conversion access kit bashing opportunities, which is what I'm looking for really. Alpha Legion, wow. I love the colours and their lore is interesting. Definite option.
    Death guard are a no, iron warriors probably not, dark angels (we all know they're traitors!) also a no, sons of horus ehhhh maybe, and emperor's children are a no.

      They're plastic, so they'd be on GW's website. FW's arms are meant to be used with the GW kit.
      Their FW transport is actually quite good in-game. However, they don't have a full army list; they're meant to be combined with Custodes. By themselves, they don't have counters to everything. (This may change, now that the rules are getting revamped.) And FW never produced minis for at least one of the units they have in the rules, the one with hounds. You're expected to convert plastic Sisters into all the other unit types.

      They are definitely not purity seals. A lot of times they weren't even written down, but a pledge before others and for a very specific reason or to accomplish a certain deed during battle. There aren't any images of the practice involving the paper being bound to a marine's armor, but IIRC in some of the Horus Heresy novels it's described as small parchment rolled up and pinned/sealed to the armor, usually the shoulder pad.

    • @CarlosSempereChen
      @CarlosSempereChen 2 года назад

      @@mathewfitzpatrick5645 It's a lot of effort and I haven't personally seen anyone take the "Alpha Legionnaires are larger" thing seriously. If you want bigger Mk IV, I'd buy Tortuga Bay's "M4 Armour (True Scale)". They're in Ukraine and would probably appreciate the business. That said, Primaris proportions are probably fine. You don't even have to remove the aquilas; the Alpha Legion kept saying, "For the Emperor," and from the novels it may not have been entirely ironic. The stories are hard to make sense of, but some remained secretly loyal, others thought that their betrayal would further the Emperor's interests (they weren't *exactly* aligned with Horus), while others were more conventionally traitorous.
      The Alpha Legion mysteriously had access to large amounts of Mk 6 armor very early in the Heresy. Given that the more upright poses are practically as tall as Primaris marines, I'd strongly consider just getting the new box. It's got to be cheaper. In the lore, Mk 4 and Mk 6 components were relatively compatible (mixing them with Mk 2/3 would be iffy) so you could use, say, the Forge World Mk 4 Alpha Legion-specific heads on Mk 6.

    • @mathewfitzpatrick5645

      @@CarlosSempereChen like I said the basic idea was to see who I could piss off with half reason of using Primaris in HH. But you have given some idea on how to do it more legitly.
      Though from understanding Khan was the first to say "For the Emperor", and that was on in ran back to Terra. I don't know when that was in the timeline. Also wasn't the Aquila not really used until after the Scouring?
      I really don't know the HH, so sorry if I've got a lot of bad info here.
      And, to me, the Alpha Legion getting/liking Mk.6 armor makes sense for the same reason the Raven Guard liked it. They're both sneaky legions, that'd like extra sensors and what-not.
