    The more I read the books, the more I become convinced that Kvothe is an antihero and there are pointers all the way through the books that he is very much following in Lanre's footsteps. Maybe Elodin, is the modern Selitos?
    There is really a feel of history repeating itself, several times throughout the story🤔

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  2 года назад +19

      Yes I definitely get that feeling too! I feel like Kvothe is very much in the grey zone and the story could go either way, he could heroically redeems himself and save the world or... he could be revealed as a villain. We've seen some small moments where Kvothe becomes very dark and almost acts evil. I also noticed that It's almost like he is an embodiment of the Amyr, "For the greater good". He treats the stablemaster poorly so that he can hurry things along and chase after the Chandrian, for the greater good. He often acts on impulse, immediately trying to do what would be deemed the right thing (like giving his horse away in WMF to someone who needs it) yet then he'll do crazy things like try to burn someone alive because the guy beat him up and stole/broke his lute. He's a murderer. He's a thief, and stole from the Maer to further his own gains. Also he's often given imagery similar to an Amyr (who I definitely don't think are the good guys):
      - When he first meets Chonicler, "Both his shoulders and his left arm were dark and wet with blood." Which brings to mind the image of a bloody-handed Amyr.
      - Also in Tarbean: "I held out my hand and was frightened by how much it shook. It was smeared with blood from when I had touched the side of my face."
      - Auri says "“You look like an Amyr,” and calls him "my Ciridae".
      "I looked down at myself and with the next lightning flicker I saw what she meant. I had dried blood running down the back of my hands from when I’d been trying to stanch my wounds. It looked like the old tattoos the Amyr had used to mark their highest ranking members."
      - After being sliced by the sword tree: "I extended my left hand, bloody palm up, and closed it into a fist. The gesture meant willing. There was more blood than I’d expected, and it pressed between my fingers to run down the back of my hand."

    Here's a thinker for all KKC fans:
    Do you all think it's a coincidence that when Kvothe stops the narrative to signal the introduction of "The Woman" (Denna, most likely) who gives Kvothe the name Dulator , that end up we meeting first Devi, then Auri and then after those two are introduced we get to see Denna again, since she was introduced earlier in the story?
    Just to clarify, the vast majority of the signs in the story points towards Denna being Kvothe's love, but this fact kinda stares at the reader's face and I've seen some first time readers think that Devi is Kvothe's love, not Denna.

  • @leser1music
    @leser1music 2 года назад +3

    I always found it interesting how similar the name Denna is to denner, kind of hinting at how she is like an addictive drug

  • @shelbaelee
    @shelbaelee 2 года назад +42

    1) Thank you for this!
    2) I would absolutely love to hear more about WMF!
    3) I didn't really notice before, but did anyone else pick up on Denna saying 'it's her job' to notice things about him, and find it a little strange? I've always thought Denna was either Chandrian or even Amir so that statement really made an impression on me 🤔

    • @MinimalEffort24
      @MinimalEffort24 2 года назад +5

      Yup that was the biggest thing that stuck l to me as well. Could be that Cinder has her unknowingly studying him for nefarious purposes

    • @gregsquires6201
      @gregsquires6201 2 года назад +7

      Finally someone else thinking Denna might be a Chandrian! I thought Jay was going to point this out when describing the Mauthen farm, that the people had sword and knife wounds, and Denna fights with a knife (and Cinder uses a sword). When reciting the Chandrian song Rothfuss points out how pale Dena is, then it is Denna that recites "See a woman pale as snow, silent come and silent go". Sounds a lot like Denna to me.

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  2 года назад +19

      I'll definitely make some similar videos for WMF! :) Yesss I'm glad someone noticed that! I wanted to point that detail out in the video and see if anyone would comment about it, since I found it sort of an odd thing to say as well. I mean, yes, she could mean it in a way that she likes him so it's her job to check him out. But it just seems weird to say that. And since she happened to be high on denner resin at the tiome and her guard was dropped, I think it's possible that this is actually a hint that it's her job to spy on Kvothe.
      Honestly, I don't think I fall for the theory that her patron is a Chandrian. Like she said, blue fire is too sinister for her patron. Denna seems to be genuinely afraid of the possibility of the Chandrian being real after Kvothe mentions it. I feel like Rothfuss is setting it up for everyone (and Kvothe) to believe her patron is a Chandrian. But I think he's an Amyr, and possibly Denna is spying on Kvothe to keep tabs on him since Kvothe was in contact with the Chandrian and survived. Her patron is secretly tracking the Chandrian, which led him to the Mauthen farm.

    • @gregsquires6201
      @gregsquires6201 2 года назад

      @@CapturedInWords Yes, Rothfuss is a good enough author to not give away anything. The existence of Bredon makes it impossible to be sure that Cinder is Denna's patron, and yes, it is very possible that Bredon could be Amyr. But if that is the case, there needs to be a good explanation of why Kvothe, who obviously has a knack for naming, nearly guessed Ferule when guessing the name of Denna's patron, eventually settling on Ash even after Denna tries to dissuade him, saying she thought the leaf was a different kind of tree.

    • @sealsmarker
      @sealsmarker 2 года назад +2

      Hmmm, well yes, her patron being a chandrian would be slightly obvious, but i can't really imagine that an amyr would support Dennas song.
      I don't see how that would be of use for the amyr. They could probably do better if they actually wanted to bait the chandrian.
      But it also bothers me why the chandrian would have the song released now.
      I think it's quite safe to say the patron is either amyr or chandrian and just because of the song i'd stick with him being a chandrian.
      Also: this is a tragedy. We all know Kvothe really wants to kill the chandrian, so it would just make sense when Denna belonged to them.

    There is a mention near the end of the book of locks not holding him back to his own misfortune or something like that and it is repeated at the beginning of book 2 with regard to doors I think? He will probably open something that should have been left closed, whether that is the 4-plate door, a box, the Lackless door, something to do with doors into Fae? Not sure, just a passing thought :)

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  2 года назад +3

      Very interesting! I agree, that definitely sounds like some foreshadowing for him opening one of the (who knows which XD) doors that have been mentioned through out the story. I believe it was in my 'what's behind the four-plate door' video where I mentioned the possibility that the Lackless door and the four-plate door are one in the same.
      "I've heard that on the oldest parts of the Lackless lands, in the oldest part of their ancestral estate there is a secret door. A door without a handle or hinges."
      While the Lackless lands are currently in Vintas, they once ruled over parts of Modeg and even parts of the Aturan Empire. Lyra was the original lady Lackless, and her and Lanre defended the city of Belen. The University and Imre are located in the Belenay-Barren, indicating that the city of Belen may have once been near that part of the central Commonwealth. It's possible, then, that the Underthing may be the remnants of the ancient city and the four-plate door is the highest tower of this ancient city in The Underthing (The University was built atop the ruins). Perhaps this was even the same high tower that Taborlin was trapped in before escaping? I think it's interesting that the Lackless door could actually be the same door hidden in The Archives, but of course that theory could be wrong and it's possible they're different doors entirely. Either way, I hope we get to see Kvothe mess everything up by meddling with forces he shouldn't be meddling with and open one of these doors!

    I think that Auri went underground because Ambrose "took advantage" of her. Kvothe finds this out and in a rage kills Ambrose in Imre and shatters the cobblestones. He then goes into hiding underground with Auri, and learns how to open the 4 plate door. When the world goes to hell in a handbasket, he comes out of hiding, tries to help undo what he has done and in true Kvothe fashion, inadvertently kills Roderik Calanthis and starts a war for succession between Alveron and the Jackis family.

    Kvothe has a Knack. A Knack is what born magic talents are, but seem to be random. We know that a fellow of the Ruh, one of the men who traveled with Kvothe when he was young, had a Knack that make him roll 7 ALWAYS. He then says that all of the Ruh know when dices are tricked and what his friend has is a natural gift. Well, this could be the case of Kvothe with names, not his sleepong mind as you mentions, but a Knack who makes him to discover the true name of things and people without hil knowing it. Examples like you said: Auri, or Ash for Cinder, that could end being Dennas patron. (Sorry about my english, not my first lenguage).

I appreciate it is a near Herculean task but one that won't go unappreciated by myself or many others.

    I read this book a long time ago, and I remember to love it. However, it seams I haven't read it at all lol that's because u've gotten so deep and made all this connections in your mind! AMAZING!!! But, apparently I don't remember shit of it lol I've got to read it again 'cause the way that you say it it's just amazing and full of depth, information and sorrow. I loved it soooo much!! Honestly, amazing. I LOVE the long videos with all this content and amazing information. Thankyou so much

    It's been a few years since I've read the name of the wind and I finally want tos read the second book so I thought it was a good idea to listen to your in depth summary. No regrets there, but thanks to your passion in this video I realize just how much I missed reading it the first time. Now I am probably gonna reread it again. Because it's much more amazing than I originally thought and already thought it was amazing.
    So thank you for your hard work! This was an excellent summary and I really felt how much you love the book and appreciate the effort you put into these videos.

    Don't take this the wrong way, I really appreciate all your hard work in distilling this book, we both share an admiration for Rothfuss's work. But there is an error at 21:36 "We are going to have to kill it" is an 8 word sentence. Of course I'm just pointing this out for accuracy and still enjoyed the time and effort put into the video :)

    Can't wait to explore your theories on this series.
    I've read the two novels and the novella (which is one of my favorite books of all time - very Gaiman), and am wise enough to realize I have no clue to what's happening outside of the obvious. Didn't stop me from loving the journey and now, thanks to you, I can understand just how much I missed (feel sort of like the narrator in that regard).
