Have listened to the Poulenc many times and this several times. Don't know much about the group or the conductor but in my book this orchestra is top notch. So is the conductor and of course the organist. I have been listening to this piece for 50 years and many different recordings..This is the best!

Auch an 'Surrogatparametern' (Instrumente oder *Text)* ist der realistischere Klang erkennbar. Warum, kann man am Graph der Funktion, die aus der *genauen* Regler-Position (kein preset; manuell *präzise* einrichten) resultiert und eine Crescendo-Verstärkung der hohen Frequenzanteile zeigt, diskutieren: Er erscheint im Display. Wiesehr hochwertige Lautsprecher klangverbessernd wirken, ist bekannt. Dass schon ein EQ das Ergebnis günstig beeinflussen kann, ist weniger geläufig.

De Verdi à Puccini. Quant à Puccini je peux en parler puisque mon arrière gd mère l'a connu en 1915. Vous vous doutez bien que je n'ai pas vingt ans. Rajoutez 48...amitiés et respect s.. 😢😢😥

Dear David, I don't have the honour of knowing you personally, but, as a fellow musician (clarinetist), I want to publicly congratulate you on this fantastic performance. I've watched and listened to all the RUclips videos I've been able to find of this piece, but none beats the performance delivered here by your (delightfully youthful) orchestra. I agree with some other reviewers that the organ should have stood out more in the piece's finale, but I understand that the recording probably doesn't (and could never) replicate what the organ must have sounded like in real life. Other reviewers have criticized your style of conducting. Personally, I love it. A particularly nice touch was the decision to have the timpanist use both sticks simultaneously at the climactic end of the piece; it's a delicious mix of (acceptable) theatrics, tongue-in-cheek, and added drama. Your own facial expression during the last seconds of the symphony says it all: this is an epic performance of a goosebumps-inducing work of art. My heartfelt respect and admiration. Félicitations!
Parfait c'est la meilleure version que j'ai entendu depuis celle de Georges Prêtre et de Duruflé à Saint-Étienne Dumont Michel Chapuis et Cochereau j'aurais aussi aimé car il monte enseigner l'année l'autre le le phrase est adapté à l'heure et là l'orchestre David et Thomas font une prestation du plus haut niveau 1000 fois bravo pour ce temps juste pour cet équilibre instrumental qui donne alors tout sa puissance émotionnel je suis très fier de cette nouvelle version française et profite de la musique française et en France encore bravo vraiment Philippe Dubois de Caen
It is truly inspiring to hear these young musicians playing so well in ensemble. I think Saint-Saëns would have cheered. These musicians don't just play; make love to the music and their instruments.
Funny story? I was watching/listening to this the first time (of 4 or 5). All went very well until the second movement. What's that? Oh, those poor musicians -- there's a cipher in the organ. There it is again! Soft but annoying, about a 2' reed I think. And again! Every organist's nightmare in a performance. --- Oh, wait. It's coming from my kitchen. It's just my oven timer. Dinner is done! True story.
Absolutely marvelous interpretation and recording. I especially appreciated the tempi throughout the symphony, but moreso in the final movement. I have heard so many recordings, from very famous conductors, who take it too slow for my liking. BRAVO!!!!!

This performance sits well with the Poulenc. The first symphonic movement is very tidy. Thomas' entry is very controlled and sympathetic; this is truly a wonderful organ, there are very few church/concert organs like this one! The sonority on the entry to the final movement ....most concert and cathedral organs are too heavy, not this one. A wonderful performance by all!
outstanding performance (and video recording too). the poco adagio is so moving... have a question: is it a choice to keep down the immense power of that organ in the final movement, or is just becouse the orchestra had better mics?
Thank you very much for your comment!! It is not a choice: actually in live the organ was quite enormous... Nevertheless it is very difficult to keep the "live" impression for such recording in a church like this and an organ like this ;) Anyway, the final result is perhaps more balanced between the orchestra and the organ, I think...

Après le Tutti n'est pas forcément la bonne idée sur un orgue de cette taille... Il est assez rarement utilisé finalement y'a moyen de faire plus subtil
Tous les orgues ne sont pas ST Eustache non plus avec ses 5 32" :-) là l'équilibre est parfait à mon gout .. Thomas n'aime pas trop charger; la musique avant tout

A very fine orchestra with excellent ensemble and intonation. The sound of the organ, however, was not featured as the equal of the orchestra - quel domage! As with most conductors they are afraid that the organ will be too loud or attract too much attention away from the orchestra. This is regrettable! And where was the sound of the organ during the next to the last measure when the tympani is fortissimo? The organ and the tympani should be a dramatic duo leading to the sound of the full orchestra on the last chord!
Dear Manuel. As I used to be an organist myself, I am far away afraid of organs being too loud. The issue here is due to the recording which was very difficult in such a church and with such a big instrument. During the concert, and especially during the last movement, the organ was often in full registration and I can assure you the audience had the opportunity to hear all the might of Thomas Ospital's instrument. Besides, I also decided to treat the organ in this symphony as an orchestral instrument and not as a soloist. After all, this is a symphony and definitely not a concerto.
En dépit d'une direction quelque peu théâtrale et peu agréable à la vue (fermons les yeux sur ce point), une belle énergie à tous les pupitres pour une interprétation saisissante. Un grand bravo au timbalier dont la prestation est impressionnante et laisse présager une très belle carrière. Avec orgue....oui, mais quel ennui pour l'organiste qui, selon l'expression de Cochereau, doit planter trois clous de ci de là. La prise de son ne rend pas, non plus, les extrêmes graves des 32 pieds et l'ampleur sonore du géant de Saint-Eustache. C'est bien dommage sur cet enregistrement. Mais gageons que le public a dû être absolument subjugué.
Muy buena interpretación… lamentablemente les falló en lo mas importante: el órgano no se escucha casi nada y se lo come la orquesta. El gran final solo se escuchan los timbales y el órgano para nada.
Hi j8u2! We have 2 answers for you: first, the audio recording is very difficult to make with such an organ and in such a church. Then the feeling during the concert was perhaps not quite the same as the youtube one; and for the audio mix we had to make hard choices to keep a general balance. Moreover, this video should be listened to with a very good audio system - I don't know what you tried? Secondly: it is not an organ concerto ;-) but a 'symphony with organ'. Saint-Saëns' writing puts a spotlight on the organ at many times (actually, often in smooth, piano moments) but the final chords are those of a symphony, not of a concerto. Our conductor used to be an organist and loves this instrument, but he wanted first to serve Saint-Saëns' symphonic spirit!
Malheureusement et c'est pratiquement chaque fois la même chose, je me suis souvent disputé avec le chef pour cela, l'on entend pratiquement pas l'Orgue alors qu'il a parfaitement le moyen de le faire. C'est flagrant dans le final. Comme le disait Franz Liszt: "si le violon est le Roi de l'orchestre, le Grand Orgue en est l'Empereur" Par conséquent le Grand Orgue dans les crescendo et le tutti final doit couvrir l'orchestre. The first symphonic movement is very tidy. Thomas' entry is very controlled and sympathetic; this is truly a wonderful organ, there are very few church/concert organs like this one! The sonority on the entry to the final movement ....most concert and cathedral organs are too heavy, not this one. A wonderful performance by all!

Thank you very much for your comment!! It is not a choice: actually in live the organ was quite enormous... Nevertheless it is very difficult to keep the "live" impression for such recording in a church like this and an organ like this ;) Anyway, the final result is perhaps more balanced between the orchestra and the organ, I think...

In my trip from the UK to Paris next week, I will be looking forward to visiting St Eustache again. I wish I could have been at the live performance of the St Saens though! Couperin le Grand : au contraire, ayant moi-même été organiste ! Cela vient du fait d’une captation audio forcément plus complexe dans une église et avec un orgue de cette taille.
J'ai le souvenir d'un très bon équilibre entre orchestre et orgue et d'un timbaliste très fougueux à la fin :-)
Après le Tutti n'est pas forcément la bonne idée sur un orgue de cette taille... Il est assez rarement utilisé finalement y'a moyen de faire plus subtil
Tous les organistes savent que l'orgue n'est jamais trop fort :) C'est les autres instruments / chanteurs qui sont trop doux.
Tous les orgues ne sont pas ST Eustache non plus avec ses 5 32" :-) là l'équilibre est parfait à mon gout .. Thomas n'aime pas trop charger; la musique avant tout

A very fine orchestra with excellent ensemble and intonation. The sound of the organ, however, was not featured as the equal of the orchestra - quel domage! As with most conductors they are afraid that the organ will be too loud or attract too much attention away from the orchestra. This is regrettable! And where was the sound of the organ during the next to the last measure when the tympani is fortissimo? The organ and the tympani should be a dramatic duo leading to the sound of the full orchestra on the last chord!
Dear Manuel. As I used to be an organist myself, I am far away afraid of organs being too loud. The issue here is due to the recording which was very difficult in such a church and with such a big instrument. During the concert, and especially during the last movement, the organ was often in full registration and I can assure you the audience had the opportunity to hear all the might of Thomas Ospital's instrument. Besides, I also decided to treat the organ in this symphony as an orchestral instrument and not as a soloist. After all, this is a symphony and definitely not a concerto.

En dépit d'une direction quelque peu théâtrale et peu agréable à la vue (fermons les yeux sur ce point), une belle énergie à tous les pupitres pour une interprétation saisissante.
Un grand bravo au timbalier dont la prestation est impressionnante et laisse présager une très belle carrière.
Avec orgue....oui, mais quel ennui pour l'organiste qui, selon l'expression de Cochereau, doit planter trois clous de ci de là. La prise de son ne rend pas, non plus, les extrêmes graves des 32 pieds et l'ampleur sonore du géant de Saint-Eustache. C'est bien dommage sur cet enregistrement. Mais gageons que le public a dû être absolument subjugué.

Muy buena interpretación… lamentablemente les falló en lo mas importante: el órgano no se escucha casi nada y se lo come la orquesta. El gran final solo se escuchan los timbales y el órgano para nada.

We have 2 answers for you: first, the audio recording is very difficult to make with such an organ and in such a church. Then the feeling during the concert was perhaps not quite the same as the youtube one; and for the audio mix we had to make hard choices to keep a general balance. Moreover, this video should be listened to with a very good audio system - I don't know what you tried?
Secondly: it is not an organ concerto ;-) but a 'symphony with organ'. Saint-Saëns' writing puts a spotlight on the organ at many times (actually, often in smooth, piano moments) but the final chords are those of a symphony, not of a concerto. Our conductor used to be an organist and loves this instrument, but he wanted first to serve Saint-Saëns' symphonic spirit!
I wonder what Saint-Saens would have thought about your sitting with your backs to the altar...

Malheureusement et c'est pratiquement chaque fois la même chose, je me suis souvent disputé avec le chef pour cela, l'on entend pratiquement pas l'Orgue alors qu'il a parfaitement le moyen de le faire. C'est flagrant dans le final. Comme le disait Franz Liszt: "si le violon est le Roi de l'orchestre, le Grand Orgue en est l'Empereur" Par conséquent le Grand Orgue dans les crescendo et le tutti final doit couvrir l'orchestre. i did! The performance of the orchestra was splendid, as was that of the organist. But the organ could have been miced to be more prominent!I do not doubt the difficulty of recordiong a live pipe organ that can span not only the entire audible range of pitches but at extreme volumes.@@garynilsson416
The organ only appears as a solo instrument in the final movement where it becomes the domininant instrument. In this the horns were too vibrant.
