Generations and features
Audi labeled three devices (of which the first two look identical) as Navigation Plus.[1] Those units are technically known as RNS-C/RNS-D and RNS-E, where RNS stands for "Radio Navigation System".
RNS-C & RNS-D
Audi Navigation Plus (RNS-D) installed in Audi S6
The RNS-C and RNS-D devices look identical and are very similar to Volkswagen MFD[2] installed in some Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT and Ford Galaxy cars. Across brands, the devices share the same general features, internal electronics, tiltable LCD screen and some elements of user interface. However, there often are differences between individual hardware variants.
The RNS-C models (recognizable by a part number ending with 192A to 192E) use the 'non-DX' map system where map data is uncompressed and thus requires multiple CDs per country (i.e. for Germany, there's one for Germany North, one for Germany South, and one CD containing only major roads). The RNS-C doesn't use antenna diversity and the radio tuner only supports AM and FM.
RNS-D models which have a part number ending with 192F or later use the 'DX' map system which uses compressed data and thus requires less media changes. In addition, the hardware has been improved with a faster processor and more memory, and additional features (like a compass display) and options (like Bluetooth handsfree or voice control) were made available. The radio tuner also supports LW and uses antenna diversity with two antenna inputs.
Features include:
5-inch 4:3 ratio LCD screen, 2-axis tiltable
FM/AM radio (FM/AM/LW on RNS-D)
CD-based GPS navigation[3] with compass
Compass (RNS-D only)
Analog TV Tuner (option)
Audio and video aux-in (option)
CD changer (option) - later variants also supported MP3 CD playback
Voice control (only on later revisions of RNS-D)
Firmware updates available through update CD
Neither RNS-C nor RNS-D are still supported with map updates. Non-DX maps stopped after 2007, DX maps stopped after 2014.
RNS-D models are often called 'RNS-DX' with what appears to be a reference to the DX map format these units use (and to distinguish from the RNS-C which often is erroneously called 'RNS-D'), however this isn't an official designation.
RNS-E & RNS-E 2010
Audi Navigation Plus (RNS-E)
RNS-E system installed in Audi A6 C5
In 2004, RNS-D was replaced with the RNS-E unit, and later upgraded to RNS-E 2010.
Features of RNS-E
This device offered a wide range of navigation, convenience and entertainment features.[4][5][6]
6.5-inch 16:9 ratio color LCD screen with 400x240 resolution
FM/AM radio
2 SD card slots for MP3 storage (up to 4GB each) located behind the LCD screen
DVD-based GPS navigation[7][8] with traffic message channel support
Route guidance shown on DIS display
Multifunction steering wheel support
Controls and user interface very similar to Multi Media Interface
Rear view camera and parking sensors display (option)
Bluetooth handsfree system (option)
TV tuner (option)
Audio aux-in (option)[9]
Satellite radio (option)
CD changer (option)
Audi Music Interface (option)[10]
Firmware updates available through update CD or with maps DVD
User interface languages: English, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Spanish (other languages available with 3rd party updates)[11]
Features of RNS-E 2010
Higher resolution LCD screen (800x480)
Support for SDHC memory cards
Chrome control knobs instead of plastic ones
MEDIA button instead of CD/TV or CD/SD
Engineering mode functions
Audi RNS-E hidden menu gives access to few additional features and options.[12] This menu was most likely used when navigation system software and hardware was developed by Audi engineers.

Thank you so much mate! Nowhere did I find an explanation that the unit needs to be powered. A bit of a weird setup, but works. Bluetooth for the first time in 10 years…
Cheers!
Glad I could help
I got one of these but had horrendous ground noise from the usb charger. There must be a way of retrofitting one in the rear of the head unit as part of the OEM wiring
I have the same problem. I want to find an USB hub that charges up and holds power to supply power to the bluetooth device.
Hi I have same navigation plus and tune to air says doesn't work for navigation plus ? I was told to get this by the dealer im getting the car from ,is this because it's not for Bluetooth calls only music and will I still get calls through the nav plus Bluetooth sorry new car for me 2013 a3 .thanks
Hi, yes this is only for music
If you have an A3, what mods have you done?
Do you have a link for the hdmi adapter or similar please?
Just buy the Bluetooth lighter adapter, it works with the Bose systems to
Which one is this?
hello, from what year on do you have electricity on the adapter.
2010, the year after my vehicle
@@AMRZINE very strange, we have a rnse with pianoblack borders in a rs3 built in 2013. But it doesn’t give any electricity. Do you think the system was built in later?
@@mcyeet2902 Hi, what does the system version information show? it should be in the settings menu
@@AMRZINE actually I have a 2011 and it also needs power. Same version of the system as you…
@@mcyeet2902 I’ve got an RS3 8P on a 2012 and have the same issue. No power to AMI port… you ever find a fix?
Hi, have you figured out whether it it possible to change tracks using the steering wheel?
not with this one
i dont have the cable imput thingy in my glovebox
Just get an aux to bluetooth transmitter a lot easier i have one that doesn’t need a radio either
Where do you plug in the aux lead
Thanks! Could you perhaps tell me if it is possible to switch off Bluetooth completely somewhere in the settings menu?
I have not come across an option to do that, it may be available in the engineering menu
@@AMRZINE thanks for the information!
Hi my car must be similar to you. Where is it you find the Aux setting on the stereo?
Hi, if you press the Media button you can change the source to AUX if you already have an AUX port or if you use the USB Dongles as in the video
Mate got something similar.. the blue light works on mine on the device .. but still doesn’t let me stream music
Any suggestions?
you could try the one i got for my q7, its a line in based bluetooth streaming device (check the video on my channel)
So does the usb one work with streaming music or does it just charge your phone?
The USB is for power
Hi do know any led bulb for headlight i cant find any 1 that fit.
H7’s on my a3 mate just search in h7 led headlights, I took my LED ones out though because they had a canbus error even after I wired in resistors, so if you can live with that defo worth buying a pair, the big ones with the fan although better didn’t fit in my headlights so even though they’re not as good may have to go for the cheaper ones that look more like a traditional halogen bulb
I can't connect to Bluetooth to make or receive phone calls
With the device in the video, it is only for streaming audio
