You brought back fond memories of my grandmother who was born in 1899. On Saturday she would make her noodles and let them dry all day and overnight. Then on Sunday after church she would cook Sunday dinner. I could never forget how great they were and how that was all I wanted for dinner. I would compliment on then and she would say if you think mine are good, you should have eaten my mothers, instead of store bought eggs she used the eggs her chickens had freshly laid.

Rhonda -- My dear paternal grandmother was born in 1902 (died 1999). She was an Iowa farmwife her whole life and raised 6 children thru The Great Depression of the late 20s-30s. She made everything from scratch including homemade chicken n' noodles. Grandpa, Grandma, and my Uncle Junior would come over to our farm and Grandma would go to work in the kitchen baking and cooking and it was a great day when she made homemade chicken n' noodles. I learned to make them myself and every so often I will make them. They are definitely a comfort food. Regarding the bedding shortage, storing it might be a problem but perhaps you guys could buy a year's supply of sawdust in the late spring or early summer while supply is plentiful and prices are lower. Another thing is you might want to grow more oats so you can have a years supply of straw. Long range planning is the key here. Some dairies use sand for bedding and they say it reduces bacterial infections. I pray the best for you guys. Take care always!

A few years back, as part of the first COVID relief package, it included a provision for a tax rebate of 28% on biofuel stove's.
I immediately saw the significant increase in demand and higher prices.
I try to squeeze every BTU from my pellet stove as possible. I use it as a pre heater for the hot water tank and built a biogas scrubber to use the exhaust gas's for my gasifier powered shop generator.

My brother started making the corn stalk round bales last year trying to save some $$ they seem to absorb a lot of moisture. With fuel going up hopefully the sawdust does not become a long term problem for you. Some farmers are using more sand as well . I see you lost your snow hopefully you get some more for the hayfields since we are only in the middle of Jan.

Heifers are certainly necessary to any Dairy operation, but they can sure be troublesome!! Here in Ca., some guys just purchase “Springers”, as they need them!! Certainly eases-up on the work load, and the pressure on the facility!! The draw-back obviously is you don’t have the luxury of continuing on with your own Heifers!! Some guys use custom Heifer growers, they pick up your Calves, raise them thru Springers, then sell them back to you?!! Sometimes, you need to put a sharp pencil to raising them on your own opposed to farming them out!! Anyway, I thought I would add that!! Great video as always!! Take care for now, Vic!!

Luckily, we have a sand reclaiming system for our dairy barn. For our dry cows, youngstock, calves & steers - we use everything we got: corn fodder, soybean straw, winter wheat & oat straw and sawdust. We stockpile sawdust all late spring thru early fall because we always ran into shortages & cost changes in fall & winter over here in WI.

Sorry to hear about the sawdust shortage. Maybe Kevin and the boys can put their heads together, and build a machine that would chop/grind old trees and/or useless trees and/or old scrap lumber into wood shavings or sawdust. Or repurpose certain crops. This would probably be a winter job, because if you cut down the useless trees in fence rows or wherever, the green leaves would be off the trees and not get mixed in, if that is a problem. If you clean up enough fence rows or areas with trees, you may gain back some farm land.

People are turning to alternate heat sources to heat their homes regardless of type weather it's coal, wood, or wood pellets. I've been burning since mid October and I have burned $800 worth of pellets so far this year. The women across the street has received 2 fuel deliveries which combined is a little over $1900.
